…or to the career at least!

***************************

GUEST BLOGGER

***************************

written by Big Nate from Da Bluff

In this world where people often piss on the people that help them get on and shit on those who didn’t there are a few people in the entertainment business who are stepping outside the realm of fakeness and keeping it 100 with their original road dog. See, today’s world has become the type of world that rewards people for not riding w/ those who got helped get them there. I often wonder how many people told some of these new age lame rappers they shit tight. Case in point Gucci Mane and OJ Da Juice Man, now SURELY they had to be at each other like that shit stupid fruity tight. I’m almost convinced that they were each other’s biggest fan. I think it is cool and it speaks to how real they are to each other and how essential their friendship had to be to each others career. Imagine Gucci Mane telling OJ Da Juice Man what we think? He might have never blessed us w/ some of the dumbest lines in the rap game. Thank you Gucci for being a friend to his ignant ass and OJ, thank you for allowing your homeboy to set black folks back another 10 months. But I must admit, I admire how strong of a bond you two dummies have.

Sure there are several other relationships that we could speak on and say damn that’s some real ass shit but a few of my favorite have to be:

Now if you really know me then you know how much I respect Jay-Z not only as a rapper but as a man. He’s a real ass cat, now we all know that anyone of us would be Jay’s side man for almost nothing. Jay and Bleek been down since Marcy Projects and Jay even wrote some rhymes for him on his own album. Jay’s also been quoted as saying Bleek doesn’t have to ever rap or anything because he’s going to hold him down forever!! Now that’s real friendship!!!

(They gotta be patna’s to be all up on each other like that….men shouldn’t be that close)

Spliff Star (the little short dude who always screams after Busta Rhymes) you absolutely have to respect the fact that Spliff Star has memorized ALL of Busta’s rhymes and knows EXACTLY where to come in. He’s the ultimate hype man for Busta. You can’t do nothing but respect this friendship. What career path did he take to be a professional hype man? What was that conversation about? Yo Spliff your rhymes are weak but come on man…be my hype man!!!!

I almost feel like I shouldn’t have to say anything about this relationship however I know some can’t appreciate how real this friendship was. Pimp C got caught up in some mess and had to go to jail. Now Bun B could have took this time to establish himself and focus more on his career however EVERY song he done during that time included the slogan “FREE PIMP C.” He kept Pimp C’s career alive and UGK a float during this time. You have to respect the love he showed Pimp C while he was locked up. When Pimp C died you could see the pain in his eyes and could hear it some of his lyrics as well. Pimp C and Bun B not only were one the coldest rap groups but one of the realest friendships EVER in the rap game.

Bottom line is this, Friendship is essential to the soul so if you’re going to make it in life or any endeavor then consider being real to your friends. The bible speaks very highly of friendship. John 15:13 states Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends. So if you’ve gone all your life w/ no real group of friends OR can say that you’ve lost friends SEVERAL different times then maybe its you and YOUR friendship isn’t essential!!!

I would like to take this special time and say to W G C…..whats good!

ROOOOO TO THE QUESSSSSSS!!!

Puis après, direct, « Ante Up » ! Rien que ça. « Busta Rhymes now ! M.O.P. now !

Got You All In Check » a été joué.

Concernant B.O.M.B., seul « Hustler’s Anthem 09 » a suivi. Impossible !
Cinq minutes, bientôt six, toujours aucun retour.

So, we’re back here again, huh? Check it out. For those that don’t know, there are multiple avenues that should be covered when your intention is to put on a “good show”. First and foremost, while performing, the one thing you should have in mind is “how can I keep my audience interested?”. Well, there are a number of ways you can do this. Lets face it; people will retain more of your visual performance than your audio. Lets cover a few visual and audio concepts that are forgotten alot of times.

Busta and Spliff

Visually, noone wants to see 100,000,000,000 people on stage yelling out your lyrics. Also, if you have a “hype man”, please make sure he knows your lyrics. Not only does his energy help your performance, it also helps you keep your breath, and it helps you remember your material should you lose place during a bar. The chemistry between artist and hypeman comes over time. The two of you should practice your performance songs often. The best example of hype man/artist chemistry is Busta Rhymes/Spliff Star. As Spliff Star often demonstrates, your hype man should perform as though its “his show”. His energy and interaction on your songs will bring your performance energy to an entirely new level. Both hype man and artist should show that you enjoy doing what you’re doing. The crowd seriously does enjoy you enjoying your performance. Next, if you have a dance song, it does help to have dancers to come out for that performance. That’s pretty self explainitory though. Also, don’t be afraid to use props during your show (as long as its relevant).

Auditory performance. Well, where to start? First and foremost, similar to what was covered in the visual part of the blog, “noone wants to HEAR 100,000,000,000″ yelling out your lyrics. Even though you’ll be using your “performance voice” on your songs, it comes out as muffled garbage if too many people are saying the same thing. Vocally interact with your audience. Don’t think you’re too good to say “Let Me Hear You Say Hooooooooooo” or “When I say ______ You say ______”. You are the conductor of your entire performance. Feel free to stop your music, talk to the crowd, talk to your band/DJ, or even talk to your hype man. Doing any number of these things can turn what may have been just another “open mic performer” to a feature at the spot the open mic is held.

Please don’t get it twisted, you still have to have songs that the crowd can remember. You also should have a project, and/or something to give away at your show (e.g. stickers, t-shirts, lighters, pens, wristbands, etc.). We’ll elaborate on the “songs that the crowd can remember” on a later date.

With all that said, who here didn’t know you should “stay F.R.E.S.H. with what’s next” I. N.ever F.ail

05.16.09

Coming off of the most complete album of his career in 2006, Busta Rhymes has experienced plenty of label fuckery: Back on My B.S. has gone through 2 years worth of pushbacks, 2 different label deals, 3 different “lead” singles, and several name changes. Regardless of all of this, Busta has remained optimistic, and has consistantly been releasing new music to the internet as possible tastes of the new album. Unfortunately, the best of those tastes are nowhere near the finished product.

Songs like the original lead single ‘Don’t Touch Me Now (Throw the Water on ‘Em)’, Bangladesh-produced ‘I Got Bass’, or more recently ‘Cut From a Different Cloth‘ and ‘Death Wish’ featuring Raekwon are among some of the best tracks with Busta’s name attached since The Big Bang. I’m sure that they all were intended to make the cut, but why didn’t they? You can’t tell me that ‘Arab Money’, one of the more annoying club songs in recent memory (although still one of the least-annoying Ron Browz songs), was better suited for an official release than any of those I mentioned above.

Listening to the album front to back, it’s obvious that Busta was going for more of a club/party atmosphere this go-round. He’s always set himself apart from other rappers in his beat selections, and that’s still true for most songs on Back On My B.S., but ‘World Go Round’ featuring Estelle is a terrible attempt at trying to recreate that torturous Pussycat Dolls song he featured on a few years ago. Or I should say, it’s a pretty successful attempt to recreate a terrible song, because it’s just as bad.

Fortunately, not everything is ‘Arab Money’ and ‘World Go Round’-level awfulness. ‘Give Em What They Askin For’ is actually a pretty hype track, produced by Ron Browz, who’s much better suited to be behind the boards rather than behind the mic. ‘Don’t Believe ‘Em’ featuring T.I. and Akon has an anthemic Rocky-like feel, and would make a huge single release if Universal is looking for another summer hit. And recently released singles ‘Hustlers Anthem 2009‘ with T-Pain, and ‘Respect My Conglomerate‘ with Lil’ Wayne & Jadakiss are both nice enough to hold their weight with Busta’s best works. The rest of the album is not.

Mike Epps isn’t funny enough to make ‘I’mma Go & Get My…’ any good, although points to Busta & DJ Scratch for trying something unique by chopping up a piece of Epps’ standup routine and making it the hook. ‘We Want In’ isn’t as bad as it looks on paper (featuring Ron Browz, Spliff Star & Show Money), but that doesn’t make it very good. ‘Sugar’ is a weaker version of ‘What’s It Gonna Be?’, with Jelly Roll playing the Janet Jackson role – “Here’s the perfect place / for me to kiss and fuck you” isn’t exactly the most subtle, nor cleverly sung hook line they could have used but I suppose it gets right to the point of the song. And ‘Kill Dem’ is every Neptunes song you’ve ever heard from 2003 and earlier, only with Busta rapping in his best Sean Paul accent.

The last standout on the record is ‘Decision’, featuring Common, Mary J. Blige, John Legend & Jamie Foxx. On it, Busta reflects on the killing of his bodyguard, and friendships in general. Amongst all of the “bullshit” songs that the album was named after, ‘Decision’ is the one truely genuine song of the bunch. I’m willing to bet that it was the one cut that didn’t take under fifteen minutes to pen, because Busta gets as deep as he’s ever been:

See when it feels that the sun ain’t shining bright enough,
It’s like the devil’s finding work to give an idler.
And though I’m blessed, I still got a handle on things I go through,
it’s good to have a friend with another perspective to show you.
Someone you know that knows you, that gives you motivation.
Someone that you could go to, and vent your frustrations.
We always talk about our peeps, how we be everywhere.
When you need ‘em the most, are they really ever there?
See, everything be all good when we be havin’ fun.
The difference is really needing a friend than having one
It’s good when your peoples are there to help your problems ,
and help you smile about it while finding a way to solve it.

All of this over a silky Mr. Porter and Dr. Dre-laced piano track, with three of the best R&B singers in the world sharing the chorus duties, and Common back on his A-game. If there were more ‘Decision’-calibre songs on Back On My B.S. than ‘Arab Money’s, this could rival The Big Bang for Busta’s best. Regrettably though, the album travels in a different, much easier direction and doesn’t live up to over two years worth of expectations, but in the end still adds up to a decent summer album.

“You my man, fifty-grand and all, but listen up…” THE COOL KIDS KILLING ARE THE MIXTAPE GAME RIGHT NOW!! I’ve heard them before but never really became what you would call a fan BUT Gone Fishing is one of my favorite mixtapes in a lil while. You already know the beats are official (shouts to Don Connon) and the verses are where they need to be. Now do not get me wrong; there may not ever be an argument for Mikey Rocks and Chuck Inglish to be considered the best pure lyricist in the game BUT they are good at what they do. Story telling, talking fly shit, sneakers, clothes, and most importantly they make SONGS (not many people can write a song)… oh and they know their basketball. The last thing I’ll say before you proceed to download is… I damn near jumped out the window when I heard “Pennies.” DOWNLOAD GONE FISHING NOW!!!!

When Busta Rhymes came out with The Coming in 1996, the public was surprised by his cartoonish music videos, massive dreadlocks and unique wardrobe. However, years later he shocked and lost some fans when he shaved off his dreads and traded in his samurai robes for white-beaters and blue jeans. Some listeners were left wondering where the old Busta was and if he could keep ears on his music.

On March 24, 2009 Busta Rhymes is releasing his eighth album Back On My B.S.. The album has tracks produced by impressive names such as Timbaland, Justin Timberlake, Dr. Dre and the Neptunes. Busta also invited artists to give their voices. “If” features Nicole Scherzinger, ”G Stroll” features Pharrell, Ne-Yo and the remix “Don’t Touch Me (Throw Da Water On ’Em)” features Reek Da Villain, Spliff Star, Lil Wayne, Nas, The Game and Big Daddy Kane.

In an interview with MTV, Rhymes said of the new album, “It’s gonna be great — look forward to the new bang-out.” You listen and decide if he’s still got it!
