A real fireplace in the home is a wonderful feature, providing a very attractive talking point as well as a source of heat. But chopping the logs for the fire is much less attractive. Log splitters are a very handy piece of equipment designed to eliminate hours of backbreaking effort that chopping logs requires. Consisting of either a hydraulic or electric-powered rod and piston assembly, the logsplitter is normally rated by the tons of pressure generated. No matter how it is powered, the basic premise is that the logsplitter drives, via a piston, the log onto a stationary blade.

Log splitters are designed to be portable and easily moved. There are several types on the market depending on the size and/or amount of logs that require splitting. Most home log splitters range in pressure from 4 to 6 tonnes, which should prove more than adequate for most purposes here in the UK.

Good log splitters require two handed operation. This reduces the possibility of operator accidents, as when both hands are occupied in running the logsplitter, nothing is going to get caught between the log and splitting blade. Also, the behaviour of the log being split cannot be entirely predicted, so log splitters should require the operator to be at the opposite end to the log being split. If you have people helping to collect the split wood, they should stand clear of the log splitter whilst it is in use.

Maintaining your logsplitter as per the manufacturer’s instructions is important in prolonging the life of your purchase. While the price of logsplitters has fallen, they are still quite an expensive purchase. Cleaning and oiling after use is usually recommended. Accessories are also available for logsplitters; a log splitter table is a good investment as it raises the splitter to waist height to eliminate any further bending.

Laughter indicates that something has been found funny.  Often it is the reflexive and involuntary result of having genuinely found something amusing.  At other times, it is forced out to create the facade of amusement; often a form of kissing up.  We will call this pseudo-laughter.  The former, reflexive, sort is of greater interest to us.

Within the former kind, there is an entire rainbow of variety.  There is the chuckle.  Creases form at the corners of the eyes.  Little sound escapes but the diaphragm gives enough of a punch for the sentiment to be heard.

There is the hoot.  This is comprised of a single salient breath found amongst the laugher’s higher register.  Eyebrows are often raised during the procedure since this variety of laughter is more often the result of surprise and only glossed with amusement.  Hence, it lasts but a moment, but consumes the entire moment in which it lived.

Next there is the side splitter.  This is the antithesis of the hoot.  At its root is pure, unbridled amusement, it’s only time frame is “long”, and also requires more breath than the laugher has at his/her disposal.  The side splitter begins its life as a chuckle or a higher pitched laughter.  Once it has reached its adolescence, the recognizable sounds of laughter begins to fade.  The laughter begins to consume its host, doubling it over.  The laugher’s eyes squeeze tightly shut.  Arms cross over the abdomen and clutch at the sides in an attempt to keep breath in.  Coming to full maturity, laughter has reduced the host to a fetal figure, shaking uncontrollably on the ground, with tears of pain mingling in the tears of joy that stream down their face.

Lastly we have the ever popular snort.  This, laugh is mistaken for any other regular laugh until it reveals itself with an all but surreptitious snort.  At this point the laughter comes to a momentary hiatus, and then is resumed in a glorious chorus by all those present.

Laughter is really a very strange reflex.  It serves much less purpose than catching ourselves when we fall.  It is never as subtle as a smile.  It is probably the most enjoyed and “sought after” of reflexes.  In a way, it is one of the most genuine signs of ones feelings.  Laughter is a release.  It is bold.  It has no apologies.

Wie der eine oder andere weiß, bin ich schwer begeistert von den ersten drei Büchern von Sebastian Fitzek „Das Amokspiel“, „Die Therapie“ und „Der Seelenbrecher“. Im Juni kam nun das vierte Buch „Splitter“ in den Handel. Zu meinem Leidwesen als Hardcover, weswegen ich erst einmal vom Kauf abgesehen hatte. Letzten Monat dann habe ich mich doch hinreißen lassen aus lauter Neugier und Vorfreude.

Es beginnt mit einer Szene in der ein Paar beschließt, dass sollte einer von beiden sterben, der Gestorbene dem Hinterbliebenen ein Zeichen gibt indem er die unglaublich hässliche Delphinlampe anschaltet.

Marc Lucas arbeitet als Streetworker nachdem er sein Jurastudium abgeschlossen hat und hilft Kindern vom Berliner Kiez eine Perspektive in ihrem Leben zu finden. Gleichwohl ist er selber nicht in der Lage eine Perspektive in seinem Leben zu finden, nachdem drei Wochen zuvor seine Frau und ihr ungeborenes Kind bei einem Autounfall ums Leben gekommen sind bei dem er auch noch am Steuer gesessen hat. Zu allem Überfluss wird er tagtäglich an den Unfall erinnert durch den Splitter, den er im Nacken als „Souvenir“ mit sich führt. Am liebsten möchte er diese schmerzlichen Erinnerungen einfach nur vergessen. Weshalb er sich in der Bleibtreu-Klinik für ein Programm anmeldet in dem seine komplette Erinnerung gelöscht werden soll. Als er jedoch in der Klinik sitzt, ist er sich nicht mehr sicher, ob er wirklich noch an dem Programm teilnehmen will, dennoch lässt er die Voruntersuchungen über sich ergehen und kehrt anschließend ziemlich erschlagen Heim in seine chaotische Wohnung. Dessen Tür seine verstorbene Frau öffnet und die ihn überhaupt nicht wieder erkennt. Als er so nun vor seiner Wohnung steht und nicht mehr hineinkommt entscheidet er nochmals in der Klinik vorbeizuschauen, aber auch diese ist urplötzlich verschwunden und Marc findet nur noch eine große Baugrube vor.

Zusammen mit Emma einer weiteren Patientin der Bleibtreu-Klinik und Programmteilnehmerin macht er sich auf die Suche nach der Bleibtreu-Klinik und seinem Leben. Offensichtlich führt ein anderer nun sein Leben oder war er nie Streetworker und hat vielleicht auch nie in der Wohnung gewohnt von der er glaubte, sie wäre die seine. Als Marc keinen anderen Ausweg mehr weiß, wendet er sich an seinen psychisch kranken Bruder Benny, den er Jahre nicht gesehen und für dessen langfristige Einweisung in eine psychologische Klink er einst verantwortlich war. Benny hat eigentlich andere Probleme, muss aus Berlin verschwinden. Es kommt, wie es kommen muss, zu Dritt kommen sie augenscheinlich seiner toten Frau immer mehr auf die Schliche. Als Dr. Bleibtreu ihm plötzlich die Hand schüttelt, Marc aber einen ganz anderen Dr. Bleibtreu am Vortag kennen gelernt hat, weiß er zum wiederholten Male nicht, was echt ist oder ob sein Kopf ihm erneut einen Streich spielt. Irgendwie finden sie den Weg in die Klinik von Marcs Schwiegervater und Marc hoffen sich hier eine Lösung aller Probleme und einer Erklärung. Doch soll es dazu kommen? Ist Marc vielleicht mit dem falschen gar unterwegs? Wie die ersten Bücher von Sebastian Fitzek bedient sich auch dieses Buch der Macht der geistigen Täuschung mit mehreren Handlungssträngen, die hier und da zusammenführen, vieler Personen und Orte. Allerdings ist es Fitzek mit diesem Buch nicht gelungen, was er mit den drei vorherigen Büchern ohne jede Frage geschafft hat, mich einen kompletten Tag zu fesseln, dem Zwang zu unterliegen das Buch nicht mehr weglegen zu können. Ehrlich gesagt habe ich mich etwas schwer getan. Eine gute Woche habe ich gebraucht. Der Showdown ist ihm sicherlich gut gelungen, aber wer die ersten Bücher von Fitzek kennt wird vergeblich nach fesselnden Moment suchen in denen man sich wünscht, man könnte schneller weiterlesen, als man es eigentlich kann. Ich persönlich finde es ein Weichspülerbuch. Nette, spannende Geschichte, vor allem als sich rausstellt worum es eigentlich geht, aber kein Thriller wie man ihn von „Das Amokspiel“, „Die Therapie“ und „Der Seelenbrecher“ gewöhnt ist. Für mich ist das Buch eine herbe Enttäuschung und kommt nicht über die Bewertung von NETT hinaus.

Hoffen wir, dass Sebastian Fitzek sich mehr Zeit für sein nächstes Buch nimmt und nicht zu einer Patricia Cornwall oder einem John Grisham mutiert. P.S.: Ein kleiner Fehler hat sich übrigens auch eingeschlichen auf Seite 77 wohnt der Hauptdarsteler im 3 OG, auf Seite 167 im 4 OG, dies dient nicht zur Täuschung, wie sich im Verlauf des Buchs herausstellt.

Die FDP möchte eine neue Wirtschaftspolitik vorantreiben – das finde ich gut. Die CDU mauert dagegen – das war zu erwarten.

Interessanterweise warnen auch schon Wirtschaftsexperten vor den Folgen eben dieser Politik … das sind die Gleichen, deren Prognosen in den letzten Jahren nicht gerade mit der Wirklichkeit übereingestimmt hatten.

Dann kann ja nichts schiefgehen, wenn sich die FDP durchsetzt.
