I’ve been itching to write again for the past couple of days but not really known what to talk

I’ve been itching to write again for the past couple of days but not really known what to talk about. I guess that while work life is extremely good right now, I’ve been failing in more personal areas. I have realised, yet again, that it’s always the ones we love who seem to bear the full brunt of our crappiness. That brings me back to understanding that the opposite of love is not hate, but indifference.

This week I finished reading Jane Wharam’s book, “Emotional Intelligence: Journey to the Centre of Your Self“. It’s certainly not the first book I’ve read on the subject, but it brought me back to the personal application of the psychological knowledge that our society has come to accept. For most of us, it seems to me, the psychologists are wasting their time: we just can’t be bothered to learn from them and practice what they recommend. Jane’s book sets out to engage us on a personal and real-life level, daring us to learn and practice what we learn. That, of course, is fine until you find yourself confronted by your partner saying something which you completely misunderstand and can feel the inferno of rage burning up your throat. Can you really remain in control of yourself and tackle the conversation with a balance of rationality and calmer emotion? I believe that you can - if you commit yourself to learning how.

I used to suppress my emotion. Spock-like, my wife tells me, and probably quite scary. I could quite happily “flick the switch” and go from angry or upset to calm. It was something I was quite proud of for many years too. It wasn’t that great a feat, actually, because pushing your feelings aside and learning to focus your rational mind on the moment is easier than it sounds, but I felt in control. The real problem, however, is that the feeling – in my case the anger, for the most part – doesn’t get dealt with. What used to happen is that the anger would get stored and, like the ghost containment system in the movie “Ghostbusters”, it needed a laser energy field to hold it in. Sooner or later, usually when I least expected it and least desired it, some inner part of me would flick another switch, bringing the defenses down and letting the rage flow free. In those moments I would lose control and feel as though some demon had possessed my very being. It wouldn’t last long, but it would hurt other people profoundly… and leave me with a sense of shame. Spock was a myth, after all.

I am learning to allow my feelings to flow. I tend to agree with Jung that until you have felt the full force of an emotion, you cannot master it. Yet, the emotion must be channelled and understood. When it is not appropriate, you need to reflect on what is triggering the reaction and start to work through digging out the cause. You also need to have the courage and honesty to admit that, sometimes, anger and other so-called “negative” emotions are actually the appropriate response. The trick is to refrain from turning into a crazed 3-year-old child when you feel the anger. There are other ways to express the emotion. As for me, I am still learning… in fact, I hope that I never stop learning, because to believe otherwise would be an illusion. The bottom line, however, is to explore your motivation for change. I want to stop hurting the people I love. What about you?

So I’m a little late on the uptake for this one. I tried my damnedest to find some way to watch it on the TGDoR, but nothing really wanted to work out for me on that day, period, and I wound up stranded at my trans-non-sympathetic friend’s house. He accepts me well enough, but he doesn’t really see that there’s a tragedy going on with these people, thinks the surgery is “cosmetic” and didn’t do more than shrug when I told him what day it was, or the Statistics. I started thinking, sometimes the ones that don’t care are worse than the ones who damn us.

But then I watched Boys Don’t Cry.

Don’t get me wrong, I know the story front to back, watched the documentary on Youtube, read the blogs and news journals, but they don’t take you into the experience of the story like the movie does. And I tend to relate very heavily to a given character when I watch a movie, whether I’ve got much in common with him or not. Brandon was Me in too many ways for me to even feel comfortable with, before we even got to the bad part of the movie. (Well, except in the juvenile delinquent sort of way.)

Anyway, I got to sit down properly with my boyfriend last night and watch it (until his mom got home, at which point I got to sit down awkwardly and stiffly and watch it. I don’t think she likes me and she’d like me even less if she knew I was a guy.) But as awful as it was, it was worth watching. He gripped my hand tight through the worst of it. The rape scene WAS the hardest part to watch, but I think most of the horror of it all washed over my head until the end of the movie. I think I sat there staring blankly at the screen for about five minutes. And then his mom told us dinner was on the stove and she left the room, and then I got my plate and sat with it and I couldn’t eat, and then I noticed there were tears dripping onto my plate, and I just sat there like a statue until reality snapped back and I had to go to the bathroom to blow my nose.

I’m trying to think of the only other movie that made me cry. I can’t remember.

(Might have been Wrath of Khan.)

So on one hand it kinda left me feeling scarred for life, and on the other hand it brought home how dangerous it is out there, really sort of made the danger and hurt mine to own and internalize, really sparked a spirit to do something about this in me. I’m not sure what yet, but it’s brewing. After all, I’m only 20.

…

And that brings home another point. Last night I stared at my boyfriend’s calendar and started shaking when I realized I have no more than three weeks to come out to my dad if I want him to know about this before my 21st birthday.

I don’t know how to cope.

I’m just scared of how things are going to change around here when he knows. We’re really tight these days; he’s slowly been turning me into a Trekkie by ordering the first season of Star Trek through Netflix. Whenever we go out to do yardwork or something together, I call him Captain and he calls me Mr. Spock. It’s really dorky but it’s something we share, and I think he’s somehow slowly coming to understand me by it. I don’t want it to end, but in that same way, I don’t want our relationship, as good as it is, to be fake in any way. I don’t want to be whatever he wants me to be just to preserve our friendship. I have more respect for him than that.

…

On a happier note, I came up with a name for my… upper region that’s better than “tumors” or even “moobs”. They are my chestnuts.

I was a fan of the Star Trek series once upon a time. Infact, I vividly remember waiting for 9PM on

I was a fan of the Star Trek series once upon a time. Infact, I vividly remember waiting for 9PM on saturdays just to watch this series. So I chose to watch this film because….Chris Pine, new technology and a fresh new look to the show.

Star Trek: The Future Begins features Chris Pine as James Kirk and Zachary Quinto as Spock, and seems to focus more on how their destinies are shaped by the outcome of events beyond their control. The story revolves around Earth, Vulcan and Romulus. The starting scene is like a nuclear bomb that sets off a chain of events…a USS Enterprise ship – Kelvin is destroyed by the Romulan rogue ship, Narada whose captain Nero wants to exact revenge on Spock. Then we are shown the childhood days of Spock, the human/vulcan hybrid and James Kirk, the son of the deceased captain Kirk who commands the ship Kelvin. Both are highly intelligent beings with IQs off the charts but both try to rebel against the established order.

Spock and Kirk meet during one of Kirk’s simulation trainings where Kirk is accused of cheating in the test and is under probation. But then news of an attack on Vulcan reaches the Starfleet which immediately dispatches a fleet of ships on rescue mission. All but the one on which Kirk is smuggled in by his friend are destroyed in a trap laid out by the Romulans. Kirk who remembers the pattern that precedes the attack by Narada warns Captain Pike who hatches a plan to destroy Narada’s jammers. Kirk and the ship’s pilot, Hikaru successfully destroy the jammer only to see Narada drop the red matter into Vulcan’s core to create a black hole through implosion. Spock tries to save the elders but loses his mother seconds before the planet is consumed by the black hole.

Meanwhile Captain Pike is tortured by Nero. Spock being Spock decides to reconvene with the Starfleet for further instructions and maroons Kirk on a nearby cold planet for mutiny. Kirk meets an aged and wizened Spock there who tells him that Kirk is the one to stop Nero in his scheme to destroy Earth. Kirk acting on Spock’s plan enrages Spock to the point he gives up his Captainship and then orders a full attack on Narada. Kirk and Spock then join forces in destroying the red matter within Narada and rescuing Pike. The Narada is destroyed successfully and so is Nero.

Back on Earth, Kirk is promoted as Captain of the Enterprise while Spock encounters his future self in the hangar and the two have a brief chat about the events before Ambassador Spock leaves for the new colony. The younger Spock and Kirk try to establish a friendship aboard the Enterprise. And this is just the high level overview of the story. There are more deeper concepts and backgrounds behind each character which is explored a little in the film.

Star Trek as a series was certainly very interesting but as the series progressed it failed to retain my attention. I thought the movie was well made what will all the 3D technology at disposal and certainly hope to see more films under Star Trek saga. This movie falls into a class of its own where you can’t comment on the actors per se but more on the storyline. But Pine does have the charisma to re-enact the original Captain Kirk’s role for sure. Its a must-watch for all Scifi fans out there.

excerpted from May 31, 2009

This goes back to the good old days when William Shatner didn’t wear a wig and was played by another actor. Christopher Pine played William Shatner and that guy from Heroes played Leonard Nimoy. (Anybody watch Heroes anymore? Man, that show used to be so good. Now it sucks.)

Thanks to some time travel shenanigans, things are a little different this time around. You know how in the original series we always thought that Kirk slept around but never saw any proof? In this film he actually gets some stank on his hang low from a green chick. Sure, the green chick was hot, but when I say “stank” I literally mean “stank” as her scent glands secreted an alien pheromone that made Kirk’s gonads smell like rancid beef stew. Seriously, watch that film- from that scene on, no one stands within ten feet of him.

Other differences include Uhura actually having lines and good special effects. Aside from that Vulcan gets destroyed and everything you knew about Star Trek over the last 40 years goes right out the window.

Some bad guy named Zero had a total mad on for Spock. It seems that sometime in the future he blames Spock for the death of his wife- I think they were having an affair or something, and while they were together in Paris they got into a car accident and the wife died while Spock sustained only minor injuries. (On second thought, that may have been the plot of a Harrison Ford film.) Anyway, in an extreme over-reaction, Zero vowed to travel to the past, trap Spock on an ice world, and force him to watch as he blew up Spock’s home planet of Vulcan, changing the time stream so that Kirk becomes an unlikable jerk and Scotty has some weird little alien life-partner.

And would you believe it? Zero managed to do just that. It just goes to show you what a goal-oriented person can accomplish.

The original cast was totally, er, recast, and only Leonard Nimoy got a cameo. William Shatner wanted a part but his demands were too high. He wanted his face in EVERY FRAME of the film. Wisely, the producers turned his generous offer down.

I’m not sure where they’ll go from here, but the next film better have Klingons, Khaaaaaan, and something else starting with K. Kryptonite or something.

Before Star Trek, I saw the trailer for Up, the new animated (formerly cartoon) movie from Pixar. In it, a cranky old guy hooks up his house to a zillion balloons and flies away. I hope I am that cool when I’m old. I already know I’ll be that cranky.

When I was a baby my parents apparently read a child-rearing book by an expert. The results were pretty clear. According to all accounts I was a skinny, under-fed, annoying, pain to be around. (I am not sure much has changed except for the skinny and under-fed part!) So we have sort of all come to the conclusion that hard-core child-rearing techniques are not where it´s at. But I have to confess that sometimes that stuff just slips out. This morning it happened with my own daughter. She has been “under the weather” lately with something I was unable to identify. So today at breakfast when she started fighting with her brother about whose spoon was better – I snapped, literally. I got right up in her face, started snapping and proceeded to say: “That’s it. Snap out of it. It’s over.” Maybe that would have been considered acceptable, but then I topped it off with a zinger: “Start being HUMAN again.”

Yup!

I had planned to write about Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian because I just saw it yesterday and thought it was pretty good…. AND then I watched STAR TREK again.

J.J. Abrams has taken over my TV. My girlfriend is obsessed with LOST, and quite frankly I’m obsessed with this movie. I’m going to wear out the little bits of data on this DVD before I send it back to Netflix. Let me also describe my pre-J.J. Abrams Star Trek relationship: hate. I am and will always be loyal to the greatest trilogy of all time: Star Wars. I am NOT a Trekkie; I do not approve of Trekkie behavior; and yes, Han Solo could beat the shit out of Capt. Kirk. Onward.

Zachary Quinto- a.k.a Sylar. Yes, I was hoping that at some point during the movie he would cut off someone’s head using his finger, but unfortunately, Abrams kept Sylar at bay. Quinto plays a perfect Spock to Chris Pine’s Kirk. His deadpan delivery makes everything he says sound perfectly logical, while also getting the most out of the script’s humor.

Chris Pine- Captain Kirk. Pine channels the cockiness of Shatner into the newest incarnation of the legendary captain of the Enterprise. (The character as a whole was just awesome in this movie- even the younger Kirk who steals that car was cocky and awesome.) But Pine does the brunt of the work, and oh boy is he good. He plays the hero perfectly and deserves every bit of credit that he can get for his portrayal.

The entire ensemble cast needs to be back for the sequel. While Quinto and Kirk are the main characters, John Cho (Harold and Kumar, American Pie), Simon Pegg (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz), and Karl Urban (Lord of the Rings) are just a few of the supporting actors who helped make this movie great. They provided much of the movie’s humor and kept the Spock and Kirk characters fresh.

A+ This movie was the BEST of the summer. It bettered a number of strong contenders coming into the summer, including the powerhouse Harry Potter. It made almost $385 million and Paramount can’t wait for the release of the sequel. I can’t wait to see where Abrams takes the sequel, hopefully to where no one has gone before.

The “Star Trek” DVD/Blu-ray release party was at the Griffith Observatory in LA. The sequel is still being written by Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman so nothing is known regarding plot and what characters will be in it. J J Abrams still isn’t sure if he will direct it.

Fans seem to want Khan to be in it, but I’m not sure if I do. I think they should go with an all new story with new villains. However, if Khan is in it then Nestor Carbonell (the awesome Bat Manuel in The Tick, the mayor in The Dark Knight and Richard Alpert in Lost) appears to be the favourite to play him.

Most of the cast attended the Blu-Ray launch party and MovieWeb managed to speak to Nimoy (Spock) and Bruce Greenwood (Captain Pike).

First up was Leonard Nimoy:

“I am very happy with the direction J.J. took this particular film. He has a great cast, and he’s in great shape. I was fortunate enough to work with an exceptional group of actors, and the fans really seemed to enjoy the film.” Nimoy went on to say, “I don’t think there is room for me to return in a sequel. I don’t think they need me. I am happy to see Zachary continue on with the role. I don’t believe a second film would benefit from me being a part of it. If J.J. asked me to come back, I would consider it. But I don’t think it is necessary, nor do I think that is part of J.J.’s plan.”

“I know they’re writing the film right now, but I’m not sure if we’ll see Pike or not,” Greenwood said. “He was mainly there to bring Kirk aboard the Enterprise and it’s hard to say if he’ll be popping up in the sequel.”

Greenwood also spoke about his history with the series and what he learned from his predecessors who played Captain Pike in the past.

“I did go back and look at Jeffrey Hunter’s performance in the original series,” Greenwood said about his preperation for the role. “This is obviously a very different kind of Star Trek, but it was nice to see the history of the character unfold.”

Would you want to see Captain Pike or Spock return in the sequel? How about Khan?

What story or characters do you want to see?

AVISO: Este texto contém leves spoilers do filme Star Trek

Pois é J. J., você me pegou.
