It’s Food Waste Friday once again. Time to document the food I wasted this week, so that I can

It’s Food Waste Friday once again. Time to document the food I wasted this week, so that I can work to reduce my food waste.

Why do such a silly thing? Because I like silliness. And because what you focus on improves, and I’m interested in reducing my food waste.

Food wasted this week:

This week I wasted some leftover Indian takeout, some broccoli and some wilted chard. I’m currently trying to perk up some chard using a revival technique I found on Farm Fresh to You.

Submerge the wilted greens in cold water by placing them in a dish, filling it with water, and putting it in the refrigerator overnight. The next day the greens will be revived.

Greens revival? Sounds good to me.

To avoid broccoli waste in the future, I can blanch the broccoli and freeze the results for stir-fries. Blanching is great for vegetables like asparagus, green beans, spinach, cauliflower and broccoli. All too often I forget about using my friend Mr. Freezer when I have too much produce.

What are your strategies for reducing food waste?

You walk by it 30 times a day or more. Occasionally, you even open it and get something out or put

You walk by it 30 times a day or more. Occasionally, you even open it and get something out or put something in. When you get to my age you open it and stand there for a few seconds trying to remember if you were putting something in or taking something out. It is your refrigerator. The refrigerator is really a modern luxury. The concept of the refrigerator came about in the mid 1800’s but was not really perfected until around 1930. So, although the earth is around 7,000 years old, humans have only been able to enjoy the benefits of refrigeration for around 90 years.

Because I have too much time on my hands and because my mind often works in weird ways, I have been considering if we can learn anything from that big box in our kitchen that keeps stuff fresh. And that is really what it does. It makes stuff cold to be sure…but it was invented so that we could keep food fresh for longer periods of time. I wonder if the Christian can make any application to his or her life from examining what a refrigerator does.

If you are a Christian then you have a “storehouse” of God’s Word in your heart. This “storehouse” of God’s Word is not supposed to stay there. It is supposed to be taken out and used. If you put fresh food in a refrigerator and never take it out and use it, it will mold and spoil. So it is with the word of God. God’s Word is meant to be used and applied, and not just for our own benefit. The freshness of God’s Word can only be enjoyed when taken out and used frequently. Just as food from the refrigerator can be taken out and shared among several individuals, God’s Word should be used in the same way.

And further, it is important what kind of “food” is originally put in the refrigerator. If you put spoiled food in the refrigerator, the refrigeration process cannot “unspoil” the food. If the Christian puts the spoiled “food of the world” into his heart, that is exactly what will come back out of it.

And, going back to the frequency of the use of the food stored, we all have probably had the unenviable task of cleaning out the fridge…right? We begin to find containers that have food on which a rainbow of colored mold is thriving. The colors are pretty, but the smell isn’t. Have you ever said to yourself as you opened one of these delightful little surprises “Wow, I forgot I even put this in here!” That’s how it is with the word of God if it goes unused for long periods of time. We begin to forget those little nuggets of truth we learned long ago. And worse, we have forgotten to apply them to our inner man’s spiritual hunger.

See you tomorrow…I have to go get something from the fridge!

Kristen from The Frugal Girl is back from vacation and Food Waste Friday is back on again. Game on!

Kristen from The Frugal Girl is back from vacation and Food Waste Friday is back on again. Game on! (Wayne’s World voices) It’s time for me to see what I wasted this week.

Extreme Close-up

I wasted a bounty of broccoli and a red pepper that looks alright, but tasted mold-like (bleech - you know ‘that grossed out feeling, like you have slugs in your mouth’).

Why account for food waste? Americans typically waste 25% to 35% of the food they purchase, and I’m trying to be atypical (I’m a classic middle child). Documenting my weekly food waste, helps with my tendency to overbuy and forget about food at the back of my fridge.

While writing about slimy cucumbers this week I pondered the temperature of my fridge. My fridge was set to 38 degrees, which most web sites say is safe and appropriate. However, most sites suggest you can go as high as 40 or 41.

Setting your refrigerator between 37°F and 40°F will keep your food stored at a safe temperature without wasting energy. The optimal temperature for your freezer is 0-5°F.

So I changed my fridge temperature to 41. My freezer which was set to -4°, is now set to 2°F.

These small changes may not deter food waste, but should have an impact on my energy consumption.

Have a food waste reduction (FWR) tip? Leave your wisdom in a comment.

Moses was called to lead a bunch of Elder Brother Types across the wilderness desert into the Promised Land. All the pictures of Moses show him with a full head of hair, but I know he must have pulled it all out by the time he passed away. Elder Brother Types do not take leadership easily. Even after being slaves for hundreds of years, they expressed their opinions quite readily. Murmur was their middle name.

God provided them manna from heaven. They murmured about this after awhile. I imagine most people would. After all, we love variety. How many ways can you prepare manna? I love to read the account of the people’s first discovery of manna:

And when the dew had gone up, there was on the face of the wilderness a fine, flake-like thing, fine as frost on the ground. When the people of Israel saw it, they said to one another, “What is it?” For they did not know what it was. And Moses said to them, “It is the bread that the Lord has given you to eat. This is what the Lord has commanded: ‘Gather of it, each one of you, as much as he can eat. You shall each take an omer, according to the number of the persons that each of you has in his tent.’ ” And the people of Israel did so. They gathered, some more, some less. But when they measured it with an omer, whoever gathered much had nothing left over, and whoever gathered little had no lack. Each of them gathered as much as he could eat. Exodus 16:14-18

The Bible reveals something about Elder Brother’s here. Do you know how to spot Elder Brother Types? By how much manna they gathered. All the EBT’s (Elderly Brother Types) gathered extra. They were the ones racing around to gather as much as they could. It was almost a contest to them.

Something unusual happened with the manna, however. The ones who gathered more had nothing left over. The people who gathered little never ran out. Paul even refers to this phenomena in 2 Corinthians 8:14, here in the context of equality and providing for others.

What does this reveal about EBT’s?

First, if they gathered too much, whatever they did not eat was spoiled with worms. It was no good the next day. EBT’s must learn to be content with what they have on a DAILY basis. We are to depend upon our Father EACH DAY for our daily bread!

Second, to avoid the stench of rotting manna, you gave away any left over manna to those who (for whatever reason) were not able to gather enough.

This lesson is important for Elder Brother’s. Don’t be so selfish that you hoard only for yourself. If you must gather a lot because of your competitive nature, do so for the purpose of GIVING TO OTHERS. This will get you closer to your younger brothers as well as your Father, because each day you come to Him for your basic needs.

Elder Brother Types tend to depend upon themselves and what they can provide for themselves. God wants EBT’s to see that all self effort is stinking worm food. If you only gather for yourself it will end up rotten, and you will barely have enough. But if you gather for the needs of others, you will never lack, you will know God’s Provision.

Elder Brothers get angry when the work of their hands is destroyed or wasted. If we learn to depend upon our Father, we will never be angry, for we will have plenty to give to others. God’s Chief Delight is to Give!

Father: Forgive me for selfishly hoarding your gifts. Teach me to depend daily upon your provisions. Teach me the importance of giving to the needs of others, that my heart might be drawn to my younger brothers.

Is there a word that describes my toy addiction? Every time I go into a pet store or even a store that sells pet supplies, I can’t resist looking, and often buying, a new toy. I even search for new toys online. How do you describe that?

Oh yeah. It’s called spoiling your kids cats.

When we first brought the kitties home, we purchased a small arsenal of toys — balls, mice, feathers, various stuffed animals. The cats were interested at first, but soon abandoned the toys. Over the next few days, I bought more toys, hoping that new ones would catch their attention. Not true. The new toys weren’t necessarily more interesting. In fact, each cat seemed to gravitate toward a few types of toys.

Here are my guidelines about toys:

Toys should not be expensive. Cats don’t care if you buy the $10 or the $2 mouse.

Colors, sounds, bells and lights are good. Anything that will catch a cat’s attention is a good thing.

If it moves on its own, it’s less work for you.

Don’t underestimate the power of string.

Try everything (the cheap version) at least once. Find out what your cat likes to play with.

Inspect the toys. Just make sure they’re not falling apart and your cats aren’t getting injured from them.

A box is a toy. So is a shoe string and sheet of paper. These are not long-term toys, and you should always watch the cats to make sure they’re not going to swallow anything or hurt themselves. Whenever my cat goes crazy with string or a box, it’s amusing for her and me.

Some toys should be “special.” If you reserve a few special toys for just you and your cat, those toys will be more interesting. I have a mouse on a string and a couple of stuffed animals that I occasionally pull out. No matter what the cats are doing, they’ll always want to play with the special toys.

Sometimes, you have to be the toy. A simple mouse lying on the ground isn’t interesting. But if you pick it up and entice your cat with it, they’ll think it’s irresistible.

Your choice or ingredients, e.g. cheese, ham, sausage, dried peppers, onion flakes, herbs, pepper and salt

Note: Eggs can go bad quickly, so only use eggs on the beginning of your trip.

At home: crack eggs into quart size freezer zip lock bag. Add all other ingredients. Mix well and seal.

In camp: bring half a pot of water to boil. When it boils turn it down to a simmer. Set the sealed bag inside the pot and let it simmer in the water, flipping over carefully every once in awhile. You will want to take the bag out of the water periodically and carefully squish the contents so that uncooked egg inside gets to the outside. After a few minutes the eggs should be cooked and you are ready to eat!
Makes 1 serving

I love to swim. For just about as long as I can remember, water and I have been inseparable, and it

I love to swim. For just about as long as I can remember, water and I have been inseparable, and it seems as though the older I get the more I yearn for it. I was spoilt from a young age, of course. We grew up just on a hill above a creek, then moved to a hill between a creek and a river, and when I was older I spent ten glorious years at the ocean’s edge. As I said, spoilt.

We went camping recently to one of our favorite spots replete with rocky bluffs and clear water … and gorgeous swimming holes. All natural, these holes change depth and breadth and flow as quickly as the stream that feeds them. Last year, a freak flash flood scooped out the creekbed to solid rock, leaving the swimming holes an average of seven feet on the deep side. Lined with rocky outcrops perfect for cannonballs and shallow dives, it’s near paradise for a water-lover.

So while camping I spent as much time in the water as possible, skipping meals and cutting sleep short to lounge in the medium I feel I was made for. We even went for a few night dips when the heat and humidity drove us from our beds. Day by day my tan reddened to full-fledged burn but I stayed and splashed and swam and dove like a frog perfectly content in its pond. Until it came time to leave.

Leaving is always the hardest part. The last swim, the endmost dive, the irretrievable closing of blue-green water as you step out and begin that final climb up the gravel bar of the shallow side toward camp, and vehicle, and civilization. How I hate to leave.

There is a part of me always fearful that “this will be the last time,” that our next visit will find locked gates, barricaded roads, large warnings posted on trees and signposts that the area is closed henceforth. It’s happened before. As kids, the land trust surrounding our best swimming hole was purchased and access closed off without forewarning. We drove up one sweltering summer morning to find padlocked iron gates across the road and to this day it has not re-opened. Two years ago there was an E. coli scare on our now-favorite creek and accessible portions were closed to all water activities for most of the summer. It was an aberration, state employees said, a weird combination of low rainfall, limited water sources, and large watersheds. But they almost closed it again this year after a long dry spell.

Civilization creeps in. Wilderness recedes. But I am grateful for the times I am privileged to visit and enjoy, unrestrainedly, these watery wonders. I look forward to the next time I can brace my feet, aim my hands, and erupt into a liquid world full of silver bubbles and cold sunbeams, gravity-defying weightlessness and dusk-blue infinities.

For our earthen world today, good water is a miracle in itself.

It’s been a month, and finally, the stars we bought Christopher from Ikea’s up. I marked to holes to where the screws are supposed to go. He trusted me. with great skeptisim of course… and… now there’s a hole in the wall, an extra screw, and an empty screw hole. He laughed at my inability to do simple markings. Mr. Carpenter Marc did the next one… opps he forgot to check for studs… so we have another empty hole, and another extra screw. The third one worked. Third one’s a charm right?

I love the view from my bed on a nice day~ see that tall glass building? It’s the Scoitabank building, it makes London look city-ish. I love how it reflects the clouds and the sky. AWWW… I am so easily amused.

I got these cutiest at Walmart yesterday! I thought they were so cute and cheap! Only $9.95. So Christopher chose the doggy and I chose the cow. (I tried to sway him to pick the cow cuz I wanted it, but he insisted on doggy, so I got both) Everyone watched him with an “awwww” as he walked around the store trying to juggle these two softies. Then on our way out, a lady asked who they’re for, so Christopher said, “they’re mine.” Then the lady made a snarly comment of how mommy spoils him.. blah blah blah… Whatever, find out the facts before you judge! One’s mine! In fact, I swayed him to get them when secretly I wanted them!…. maybe it’s because he also has a race car set in his hand.

They’re huge, soft and cute… Loves them! Yes, Christopher has claimed them both to be his.. but that’s fine with me, as long as I get to cuddle with them when I watch TV. He took this pic btw.. what a cutie. I really don’t mind spoiling him. Marc saids I should stop. But I was spoiled growing up. And look! I’m just fine.

Everyone is complaining about men not wanting to be responsible and get married these days, but no o

Everyone is complaining about men not wanting to be responsible and get married these days, but no one is paying attention to the incentives that cause men to stay clear of a relationship that is completely regulated by the state. Men don’t want to be coerced to do things.

The problem with the political left is that they never understand what incentives they are creating when they start controlling private interactions between individuals. Take a look at the stories below and ask yourself: is this going to make men and women want to marry and have children?

In Canada:

A Quebec youngster has used the courts to avoid parental discipline in a “landmark” case. The 12-year-old girl, who is too young to be named, went to court to force her father to overturn his decision not to allow her to go on a school trip. Her father had decided to ground her after he found out she had posted photos of herself on a dating website against his wishes.

The sixth grader then took her father to court, arguing that his punishments were too severe.

Madam Justice Suzanne Tessier of the Quebec Superior Court ruled today that denying the girl permission to go on the school trip was an excessive punishment. The girl’s lawyer, Lucie Fortin, said, “She’s becoming a big girl” and described the school trip as “a unique event in her life”, the Globe and Mail reported.

In Germany:

A homeschooling family in Southern Germany spent six hours in a grueling German Family Court session this week with the hopes of regaining custody of their six homeschooled children, who have been held in state custody since January. After the long and confusing session, the Gorbers regained custody of their 3-year-old son. The judge, meanwhile, retained custody of five other Gorber children now being kept in foster care and youth homes pending a court-ordered psychological evaluation of the parents. The court did allow increased visitation for some of the children up from one hour every two weeks that had been permitted since the children were seized in a surprise raid by the youth welfare office (“Jugendamt”) and police.

In New Zealand:

Green MP Sue Bradford’s controversial child discipline bill was tonight passed by Parliament, with only seven MPs voting against it.

The bill removes from the Crimes Act the statutory defence of “reasonable force” to correct a child, meaning there will be no justification for the use of force for that purpose.

But it doesn’t even work because it targets law-abiding people only! (Just like gun control!)

It’s very much like the Democrat party’s complaints about outsourcing. The left caused outsourcing with their interventionist war on “the rich” and “greedy corporations”. We need to move away from noble-sounding intentions fueled by the need to feel superior, and talk about actual incentives and actual effects of policies.

Sex education and taxes

Laura posted on the state interfering with parents’ right to educate their own children about sex: (CP link)

No, we generally are not in favor of sex ed at school. If “comprehensive” sex education included what it did when I took it in the early 80s – basic human anatomy, puberty, tab A fits into slot B, birth control methods include the following… even in the conservative evangelical circles I run in, few would object. That’s all stuff we tell kids at home after we opt them out of sex ed at school- along with the main message of “Don’t do this; it’s not time in your life yet for this.” What we object to is the attitude that teen sex is normal and inevitable and we should quit squawking about it. We object to schools teaching bizarre sex practices like fisting. We object to the theory that teenagers are mindless bags of hormones who can’t be expected to control themselves.

…Our teens are political pawns for the left. They’re helpless victims of our [= parents'] prudery, children that the government needs to provide for at every turn with health insurance and free college tuition (but don’t deserve an adequate secondary education except when it’s time to raise taxes), socially and technologically savvy enough to make their own entertainment and political choices free from our censorship, mature and wise enough to choose abortion (but not give birth), and 18 year old babies who need to be protected from sneaky military recruiters and beer. The rallying cry may be “it’s for the children!” but the only really consistent position I see in the left is that parents do not know best; government does.

Laura also posted on how socialism takes money away from the family:

When we charge people more to earn money via income taxes, regulations, and similar means, history has proved time and again that people earn less money. Whether that’s by choice, where people like me purposely throttle back our income in order to pay fewer taxes, or by government fiat, where government takes more money from businesses, the bottom line is that productivity goes down and everybody, including the government, gets less money out of the system.

By the way, I notice that Laura has a new post up at Hot Air’s Green Room, (CP link), on how families can send the socialists a message by cutting off their supply of money, legally. She runs a business, so she knows what she is talking about.

And about how the feminist state’s discrimination against male teachers is negatively impacting young men. And there is my series on how Democrat policies discourage marriage: Part 1 is here and Part 2 is here and Part 3 is here.

Okay, so we all have that “boy problem.” We expect the boys to know everything about us

Okay, so we all have that “boy problem.” We expect the boys to know everything about us girls and get mad when they don’t, but is that really right? No it’s not.

Us girls have high standards and “need” too be treated like princesses.. have everything go our way or get daddy with the shot gun to make the guys give us what we want. The reality is that daddy isn’t going too be around for ever and one day just maybe you pout a little too much and the guy leaves you for some one a little less whinny. Do you want that? I sure don’t

My short life i have wondered what it would be like to have some one (particularly a guy) treat me so good and spoil me without question. But just wait! Why can’t us girls spoil our men? Have we ever thought that the men in our lives will get tired of spoiling us but they get nothing in return. We girls have the capacity too treat our men better then we treat ourselves. Our physical body’s take over and want what everyone else has, but face it if we don’t treat our men with the tiniest bit respect how do we expect to get any in return.

Lets use this story for instance. (the names have been modified)

My friend Ashely went to eat with her boyfriend Paul, they went to a really really nice restaurant for HIS birthday not hers his, ( guess who paid) They went in and got seated and the waiter took their drink orders Ashley ordered the most expensive drink she could find, and Paul ordered a water. They were talking for awhile and Paul asked Ashley what she liked in a relationship. Ashley replied and told him ” A man that will spoil me without me saying anything, a man that will pick up the tab when i “accidentally lost my wallet” and a man that will love me when I tell him too”. You wanna know what happened next. Paul got up took the drink right outta her hand took a swig and threw the rest on her head, gave her the bill and walked out. She screamed after him and said “BUT I “FORGOT MY WALLET!” PAUL COME BACK I’M DRENCHED” he quickly came back and got right in here face and said ” well maybe you should find someone else that can take up with you “forgetting your wallet” oh yea don’t forget silk stains”.

Remember the boys can walk and leave you too.. It takes two too tango, and one too walk out the restaurant.

Original Photo: ctstalin (EDMW)

Northbound train services from Ang Mo Kio to Khatib MRT stations were disrupted for about 50 minutes when a train developed a fault and stalled around 7pm on Wednesday.

According to an SMRT spokesperson, the train had to be pushed to Yio Chu Kang station by another train travelling from Ang Mo Kio station.

Some 1,800 passengers onboard both trains subsequently alighted at Yio Chu Kang station at about 7:30pm.

In a statement last night, SMRT said that while it is uncommon for trains to break down between stations and be rendered immobile, such incidents have occurred in the past.

As a result of the breakdown yesterday, the track between the Ang Mo Kio and Khatib stations was shut down, resulting in a disruption to train services.

More than 6,000 people were forced to find alternative ways to get to their destinations.

SMRT said commuters were kept informed about the service disruption through announcements in the trains and at affected stations.

The public was also informed through MediaCorp Radio’s Traffic Watch service.

SMRT said it did not deploy additional buses to ferry passengers as this is done only in cases where delays last for over an hour.

SMRT apologised for the inconvenience caused and said northbound train services resumed at around 7.50pm.

This video is pure comedy. I can’t believe someone has actually been saving McDonalds burgers since the 80’s. What else could you leave out for that amount of time without spoiling or decomposing? Twinkies? Maybe a pizza pocket? Wow…this just goes to show that your body must have absolutely no idea what to do with all the chemical insults from such a super processed foreign species of “food”. Here’s a rule of thumb: If it doesn’t spoil, don’t eat it. What happens when you bite an apple and leave it out for a half an hour? It browns right? This is a process called oxidation. It happens to organic foods when the stressors of the environment are able to spoil them. The same thing happens to the cells in your body when chemicals and stress are introduced like those in a big mac. The difference is that good food choices like fruit and vegetable have antioxidant behaviors in the body. In other words they protect your cells from damage and aging. Own the consequences of your choices! Choosing a big mac is just like choosing to smoke a cigarette or sit on your arse all day. These are suicidal behaviors that our body has no genetic defense against. Feed your cells some life today!
