Ford Powerstrokes with a 6.0L engine have one of the worst reputations in the diesel world. Ford has been frequently asked, “Why didn’t you just keep the 7.3L engine?” But really the question is unfair given the circumstances at the time of creation of the 6.0L engine.

After January 1st, 2003, the federal government set tougher diesel emission standards. All the top diesel application manufactures had to restructure and invest a substantial amount of money to abide these new standards. Ford was one to do the same. Some say Ford should of added an exhaust gas recirculation system, a variable geometry turbo, and a high pressure injection system to the 7.3L engine. But others say nay, a clean burning 7.3L engine would have a horsepower disadvantage compared to the GM Duramax and the Dodge Cummins applications at the time. Also with Dodge Cummins Bosch’s latest Common Rail Injection, Ford 7.3L engines were much too loud.

So the 6.0L was created with four goals in mind:

Meet Emission Standards

Have More Horsepower than the competition

Have Better Fuel Economy

Make a quieter engine

When 2003.5 came to be, the Ford Powerstrokes 6.0L were out on the market. In stock form this was a consumer dream. The 6.0L engine met all emission standards and passed all testing performed during research and development. Obviously stock vehicles have been factory tested, so they are thought to be more reliable, which is mostly true for 6.0L engines. 6.0L engines rarely experience failures when operating at stock power levels. But let’s be honest, why own a Diesel if you can’t MAX IT OUT! This seems to be the area where 6.0L engines are having trouble, because now with aftermarket modifications your now turning more rpm, fueling heavier, and creating more heat and higher cylinder pressures. But Orange County Diesel feels that aftermarket modifications aren’t bad for 6.0L engines, they just have to be the RIGHT aftermarket product!

Here is a list of common problems of the Ford Powerstroke 6.0L 2003.5-2007

Variable Geometry Turbo Vanes Sticking

I am now on my brief sabbatical, of undetermined length, between jobs. So my time is designated for resting, being healthy, and naturally doing creative things. I saw an awesome baby card yesterday with an octopus on the front knitting socks with a few different sets of legs and finished socks hanging out on a few of it’s other legs. The inside of the card said something about getting ready to be busy with baby. I’m trying not to be like the octopus right now, even though there are so many things that I want to sew and knit with my “free” time right now. I have told myself to enjoy this time and that there is nothing that must get done before the baby arrives. Which is true since the only this the baby really needs are the parents not cute mobiles and burp clothes (however I plan to finish both eventually).

One thing that I did feel like I needed to finish before the arrival were the goodbye gifts for my co-workers. I made a bird (above) for each of my colleagues with a tag that reads:

“It is a fact that in the right formation, the lifting power of many wings can achieve twice the distance of any bird alone.”

It’s a fitting quote since the team works closely together and is truly a wonderful group because of all of the qualities that everyone brings to it. Leaving my co-workers was the hardest part of leaving work and I was happy to make a little something to give showing my appreciation for all of their support over the years. And to be honest, giving gifts is often more about the person giving them than the recipient, and these gave me closure from the team and the job as best it could.

The pattern is a hybrid that I made up based on the Spool bird pattern and the bird pattern from Last Minute patchwork Gifts by Joelle Hoverson.

Well first off the processing list is an image I guess we have all seen a million times, trouble was I never really had one for the portfolio. I have been asked a few times over the last 12 month if I had any images of this Australian Icon, well now I guess I can answer yes, as I at least have 1 processed with several more to come …

On this morning I could not believe my luck with the light. What started with 4.30am wake up down the far end of Pitt St in complete darkness ended with 3 sets of amazing light changes and one large coffee and sensational toasted egg bacon and cheese from a food stop on circular key nearly 4 hours later with a big ass smile on my face …

What started out as a deep blue morning sky with wispy white clouds lit by an almost full moon turned a sensational light pink color before turning a subtle orange and white. Needless to say being my first morning in Sydney I shot as fast as i could and tried to cover as much ground as well. I must make more cuts and breaks left and right shooting from as many angles as I can think off than Jordan with his tongue out making his way to the hole … it must look very strange to the suits in the morning making there drone ways to work heads hung low coffee in hand dreading their upcoming day, all while watching a semi madman throughly enjoying the chase and rush I get from photography …

Here is a 4 image stitch/blend from the second set of light that morning …

No problem, there are loads of CSV export tools out there. But it then transpired that the CSV’s that I was generating were using quote (”) marks to identify fields e.g. “field1″,”field2″ and so on…

The Brammo Sound Contest is approaching, and it needs a new name. Badly.

“Spool Up” just isn’t going to cut it. It doesn’t say anything about the purpose of this sound. The sound Brammo’s will make when traveling under 10 mph will function as a safety feature. An alert. A personal greeting to those around it.

We know. They aren’t all brilliant. But there happen to be more than a handfull that sound (no pun intended) pretty damn cool.

Anyone with other ideas about what to name the Brammo Sound Contest, shoot them my way. And, as always, feel free to tell us what you like. I’m sure we’ll hear about the names you don’t.

Ok, so strictly speaking, I haven’t actually developed my first roll of film yet, although I did insert my first roll of Tri-X into the AE-1 this morning.

But about an hour ago, I decided to have a break from revision and practise at loading film into the reel for development. I immediately hit a snag; I couldn’t open the damn canister.

It took me ten minutes to pry it off, after finding a better way of gripping it with a bottle-top opener. When I got the spool out, the entire roll just unravelled! It didnt spin off completely, but it was a pain nonetheless. Trying to spool it onto the reel was also another matter. I had practised before, but only on little strips of wasted film (I was using a crappy roll of Superia that had about ten shots on it that I couldn’t be bothered to use).

It took me about 10, maybe 15 minutes to get it all on, and it was a hassle and a half. It kept jamming as I did it, randomly sticking so I couldnt spool it. It also crumpled a few times at the end as I tried to get the last few inches on. The hardest part was feeding it in; I had to have two hands on the reel, but when there wasnt enough tension on the film it wouldn’t wind up!

Urgh, pain in the neck. Got to get accustomed to doing it though, and in the dark nonetheless.

Before I do though, I need to acquire a new jug (can’t use the one we have for generic uses around the house (gravy making etc etc) so I need one for the chemicals only) and a measuring cylinder too.

Sigh*, back to some RE revision I guess.

I’m so excited. Today, in an antique store, I found an old spinning wheel. I thought it looked pretty good and it looked pretty sturdy. I was just so excited. When I took it home, I looked it over and I need a few things besides hooks, screws and bolts. I need a leeder from the wheel to the foot pedal. I also need the flyer and bobbin, which will be the hardest part to find. I’ll need a band from the wheel to the flyer. I still have a lot to learn and hope that I can get some good advice. I’ve sent some e-mails out and am hoping for responses soon.

Until I have it up and running, I will be learning how to spin with a drop spindle. I’ve made a basic one out of a dowel and a wooden toy car wheel. I ordered an ounce of wool on ebay and can’t wait. I must be crazy. The more I learn, the more expensive my hobbies become.

Birds do seem to be everywhere in the crafty world. Even though I think of someone that doesn’t like to follow trends (I learned the viola instead of the violin in 5th grade because it seemed unique and unconventional) I really like the birds. Eventually the birds will fall out of hipsterdome, but for now I can’t get over their cuteness.

I happened upon the Spool bird mobile at ohdeedoh. It’s freaking amazing and I really want to make a bird mobile now. I think the bird softies would look good as a bird wreath too. I’ve always been fascinated by mobiles, so this is an amazing combination of mobile, softie, and natural texture (the sticks) all in one.

We are currently without a camera since our little POS (“point and shoot” or other words you could think of) digital camera hit the dust. Actually it hit the cement in the processes of saving Martha Stewart Living from a mud puddle. We may get another similar camera while we’re saving for a nice camera. Hopefully I will be able to take pictures of some of the projects soon and post about them.
