I had an 8gb iPod touch for christmas and have downloaded and played a lot of the games from the Apps section. Below are screenshots of some of my favourites. Incidentally i only learned how to take screenshots on an ipod touch the other day. Simply wait until the desired image is on your screen and press and hold the on/off button at the top and the round button at the bottom both together. So simple and i never knew it was there.

Var jau pārpublicēt kādu no ārzemju rakstiem, taču es labprāt padalīšos ar savu pieredzi iPhone spēļu iegādē un lietošanā…. te būs mans 2008. gada TOP 5 iPhone spēles:

1. SimCity.

Starp citu, šī ir Here and Now World edition, līdz ar to Rīga gozējas kā otrs dārgākais lauciņš. Nu kas ir Monopols, domāju, nav jāstāsta. Kas ir interesanti (es gan vēl nenotestēju) ir pieejama tīkla spēle caur WiFi… līdz ar to vairāki draugi var spēlēt tīklā savā starpā no saviem iPhone telefoniem. Spēles cena 7,99 USD.

4. Spore Origins.

5.Crash Bandicoot Nitro Cart 3D.

Overview:

Here is a game from the Application Store on the iPhone that caught my eye. I haven’t been too impressed with most of the games that have came out on the application store so far but this one isn’t bad. As most of you know Spore has been one of the most anticipated computer games from Will Wrights’ library for almost 8 years now and it’s finally out. Well for the iPhone they did kind of a dumbed down version which only includes a small stage of the game where you evolve as a cell. But what more could we ask for from an iPhone.

Story:

I guess you could call it a story. The game focuses around the character that you create and you guide it through the levels. The levels are divided into locations such as muddy water or primordial ooze and you make your way through them by eating smaller cells.

Gameplay:

The game play is decent on the game. You control your character via the accelerometer and tilt it in the direction you want him to move. The main fundamental of the game is that you eat cells that are smaller than you and once you eat three, you gain a heart and grow. But it would be nice if your creature looked bigger. The game actually makes all the other cells smaller so it feels less rewarding. As you progress through the levels you randomly collect evolution points which can be used to upgrade your character with new evolutionary advances such as small wings that help you turn better, or a spike which can pop bubbles and stun enemies. For the purposes of the game it does everything it sets out to do well.

Graphics:

The graphics of the game are quite stunning for an iPhone game. The cute little creatures make the game a little bit more impressive when compared to its big brother Spore. The developers made the games graphics good enough to be called a spore game.

Customization:

You can customize your creatures a lot in this little game. Although there are some downsides. Your creature has a sort of skeletal structure that it can’t deviate too far away from. You can make either side or the middle bigger. That is about the length of it when it comes to shape. The creatures have a main color and a secondary color and you can change the design and the color of them. Now with evolution points, as I mentioned earlier, you can improve your characters looks and performance with upgrades, or more specifically evolve your character with an array of different attachments. For each category there are three parts that you can evolve once you buy one, you can add as many of them onto your creature that you want. For example a flagella or tail, for simplicity, costs 1 evolution point and once you add it you can add 10 of them onto it if you want. The creature customization can add to the depth, but it is still quite limited and will only give you so much enjoyment.

Final Words:

The game delivers as an iPhone game but that’s about it. It is fun for a while, but even with the character customization and so on once you play through it you have seen it all. But for that play through, it was fun while it lasted.

Pros:

Cute little creatures with nice graphics

Creature customization

Decent sized campaign for a mobile game

Cons:

Can get very repetitive

Pretty easy to blow through

Creature customization is limited

Score:

Overall: 7.5/10
Gameplay: 7.0/10
Graphics: 8.0/10
Features: 7.5/10

It’s been a week since Google and T-Mobile unveiled the first Android phone, the G1, and already companies such as Namco have announced games for the phone. But since the Android Market only allows free downloads right now, those games will have to be free.

EA, the company behind Spore, has confirmed that they will support Android, but only when users can pay to download games. So that means Android owners cannot enjoy Spore Origins or The Sims until EA can make some money from the downloads.

Ok, ok… I understand a company wanting to make money from their hard work that goes into making these games, but how much will their company lose if a couple thousand (maybe more) people download their games for free for a short time? It seems to me that EA would be used to losing money after the huge backlash against the recent Spore PC game that was pirated weeks before its official release.

Right now iPhone and iPod Touch owners can download and play Spore Origins for $9.99, which has 735 reviews on iTunes. So that means at least 735 have paid for the game, and doing the math you can see EA has received $7,350 from iTunes downloads alone. Now I don’t know how much money it cost EA to create that game, but I can’t imagine it would have cost them much considering it’s just a dumbed-down version of the full PC game.

So as a consumer, do you think it is reasonable for a company like EA to hold off on creating games for the Android platform until payed downloads are allowed, or do you think they should suck it up and release games for free? They could even release just a lite version of the game which wouldn’t include all the features that a paid version would have.

I bought Spore origins on iPhone 2 weeks ago, a few days after it came out. I finished the game in a few hours so I want to write a little about the game.

The game was ported to the iPhone in 2 weeks so I guess they did not necessarily have time to put many features into the iPhone. For anyone who doesn’t know, Spore is a EA/Maxis game.

If anyone knows about the full version for PC, the iPhone version covers only the “cell” stage where you’re this little tadpole like creature swimming around eating worms to grow bigger. As you eat more things you can “evolve” by adding parts to your creature to increase 4 attributes – speed, perception, armour and attack.

There are 3 different parts for each attribute and use up an evolution point when you add them to your creature. Once you have one of these on, it doesn’t matter how many more you add it will not use evolution points and will not add more to your attributes. Meaning, in the end your creature will have the bonuses of the 12 parts and nothing more, which kind if sucks if you want more attack or defence, you can’t.

Every 5th level, you go through a maze rather than the usual eating things to grow. You must get to the end alive as there are creatures that can hurt you along the way.

There are a total of 30 levels. Once complete, you can no longer edit your creature. Once a level us complete there is no going back and replaying any levels to get a higher score. The only replay value it has is you get to create a new creature. Or you can play the endless game, but seriously it is just a fancier version of Snake.

In terms of controls, it is quite good but you do end up moving around with the phone as you cannot see the screen if you tilt it away. (so you end up moving up and down and look overall very silly on the train or bus)

For a $12.99AUD game, I think it rates a 3. Higher of the game was cheaper. Honestly I am disappointed about the lack of replay value and for this price I expect more.

Here are some screenshots: (sorry game is played sideways hence the non rotated images)

If you’ve been reading any of the news surrounding Apple’s newest refresh of their iPod

If you’ve been reading any of the news surrounding Apple’s newest refresh of their iPod product line, you may have noticed that they’re beginning to take this gaming thing seriously. In fact, since as far back as their App Store launch in late June, Apple has been pushing their two touchscreen devices as more powerful than the competitors’, hoping to become somehow relevant in the shadow of two portable gaming behemoths, Nintendo and Sony.

But it wasn’t until last Tuesday’s “Let’s Rock” media event – in which Apple refreshed their entire line of iPod hardware, right on schedule – that they really threw down the gauntlet. Along with the introduction of the new iPod Touch hardware, Steve Jobs went so far as to say that the iPhone and iPod Touch are “the best portable [devices] for playing games.” And to back it up, Jobs spent most of the event playing with demos of Spore Origins, Real Soccer 2009, and Need for Speed, all in front of an audience that was eating it all up.

But – all PR spin and corporate jockeying aside – it begs the question: does Apple have what it takes to make a successful gaming device?

From a hardware perspective, the iPhone is no slouch. Boasting a powerful graphics processor and Apple’s popular multi-touch screen, there’s no question that the iPhone has what it takes to run games well. But if there’s one thing that we’ve learned from the current console generation, it’s that system power isn’t everything. If it were, PC gaming wouldn’t be in its current swoon, and the PlayStation 3 and PSP – not the technically inferior Nintendo Wii and DS – would be topping the sales charts every month.

But what about software? One of the largest hindrances of any system’s growth is the ease with which developers can create games for it. It seems simple, but I think the concept is underrated – if a team has to spend twice as many resources developing a game for one system versus another, there needs to be an equally large financial incentive for them to do so, or it wouldn’t be worth it.

And, according to Spore’s Will Wright, there is no such barrier to entry with the iPhone. In a recent interview with PocketGamer.co.uk, Wright criticized other phones for their limited bandwidth and poor interfaces. With the iPhone, however, you “start to see the power. With the CPU power, you can do some really cool stuff.”

Even further, one of the iPhone’s great advantages over their competition in the software area is the ease with which developers can distribute their games. That is, there’s no hassle with packaging and shipping to retail outlets in the distribution of their games. They build them, they upload them to the App Store, and they sell them. Done.

What I perceive to be the iPhone’s largest challenge in entering the gaming area could also be their largest advantage – the control scheme. Deep down, the traditionalist inside of me is still having a hard time understanding how developers are going to be able to develop an intuitive control scheme using nothing but a touch screen and an accelerometer.

And I realize that people had the same concerns for both the Wii and the Nintendo DS, even though now they’re the two most popular consoles in the world. But still – how in the hell are you supposed to see what you’re doing if you’re too busy poking and jiggling the screen?

When it comes to their reputation, Apple may not be a traditional player in the gaming market but there’s no question that they have established their legacy as a producer of high quality hardware with mass market appeal. Much like the way that Sony smashed into the gaming market 15 years ago with the PlayStation, it seems almost inevitable that Apple will force their way into this market or spend a lot of money trying. And I think that this established appeal will be a huge boon to Apple in the coming months. Because, contrary to other multi-purpose devices like the N-Gage or Gizmondo, the iPod brand is an almost necessary part of any person’s gadget lineup.

But can Apple do it all with the iPhone? The cynic in me still says no. I think that there are simply too many variables in play for Apple to be able to successfully integrate gaming into their already saturated multimedia devices. Instead, I think we’ll see Apple get their feet wet with the iPod Touch and iPhone, and follow those up with a legitimate gaming device in late 2009 or early 2010.

It's just a little awkward to reach.

(Originally posted 10 September, updated 14 September)
Spore Origins isn’t the only EA game that appeared on the UK’s App Store this week. Tetris is there, but you won’t find it through the search box.

Search for Electronic Arts and the only application returned is Spore Origins. Try Tetris and you’ll get Spore and a few other puzzle games, but not the one that you want.

I found it by fluke. Visit the Spore page and click the link to see all apps from Electronic Arts — I know, you’ll be expecting to only see Spore, but Tetris will mysteriously appear as well. Alternatively, here’s a shortcut.

Bizarre. What the hell causes this? I wonder what else has slipped under the radar.

Anyway, one less reason to carry my DS around. Bring on SimCity. Hopefully someone will release a game in the style of Advance Wars, too.

Update
This affects other content too. Search for Star Trigon. using the search box or a Power Search and there are no results. Search for Namco in the search box and you get Pac-man and Ms. Pac-man.

Do a Power Search for the same and the right group shows the same two games even if you click to see all results. In the left pane that lists matching publishers, click Namco and you’ll see Star Trigon in addition to them.

A direct search for Tetris reveals it in the US store, but the issue with finding Namco’s game is present there. Good luck finding Laminar’s X-Plane, too.

All is not well.

According to Gizmodo (do I really have to link to it?) an Apple Event is rumored to be happening on Sept. 9th, 2008. Probably Kevin Rose’s new iPods?

Spore Origins, the Spore minigame

On another note, MacRumors has released information about a companion game for the long anticipated evolution game Spore. The game, known as Spore Origins consists of the life of a cell. It is a “spinoff” of Spore and can be used in the real Spore game. It is said to only be $4.99 in Apple’s App store, but is NOT I repeat, NOT compatible with the iPhone or iPod Touch. The official version of Spore is available September 7th for Mac, PC and Nintendo DS…..probably iPhone.

Tucked away behind beautiful booth babes, flashy lights, big-rig computers, and jamming speaker syst

Tucked away behind beautiful booth babes, flashy lights, big-rig computers, and jamming speaker systems I found the mobile gaming booth on the vendor floor of Quakecon. Here they had several mobile phones set up running various games such as Orcs&Elves, and I think even Wolfenstein RPG. What caught my eye, though, were the Spore: Origins logos posted alongside logos for these other in-development games. I inquired with the representatives at the booth, and they gave me some interesting info that the Spore: Origins game for the iPhone and iPod Touch will be released on September 7th, 2008.

Here’s a quick video of the statement:

They went on to say that there were actually several iPod Touches with the Spore: Origins game installed and ready for demo! I couldn’t wait to get my hands on one to start playing, and I must say I’m really excited for the final product to reach the AppStore. I only played 3 levels, but the idea pretty straightforward at first: eat or be eaten. You first start off as highest in the food chain, chasing smaller organisms and getting stronger and more evolved with each one you eat. As you progress, however, organisms that will eat YOU come into play and you must avoid them while using the accelerometers to steer your creature into eating the smaller organisms. One really neat attention to detail I noticed was the fact that, in the lower levels, the background of the primordial ooze showed fuzzy images of larger organisms swimming around, giving a sense of realization of how small your start off as.

The customization aspect of it is pretty interesting. Aside from choosing what colors, designs, and even textures your creature can have on its body, it looks like players will be able to add their own personal photos as an option for the creature’s look. While browsing through the customization options, I found an icon of a polaroid picture of palm trees, which led me to this assumption. As the levels progress, more customization options are unlocked. You’ll be able to change the bone structure of your creature, what types of defenses and probes it has (like horns or thicker, tougher skin), etc, etc.

At the end of this post is a video of me giving a hands-on video demo of Spore: Origins. It’s only of level one, and I can upload the others if there’s a large demand for the rest. Keep in mind, however, the video of the demo is very blurry (I can’t control the focus on my Flip video camera), so here’s your warning. Yes, it is also very loud seeing as how I’m on the show floor at Quakecon…and the booth where they featured Spore: Origins was dimly lit.

I did have to go out and get this app, I just had to with all that it was supposed to be. Spore™ Ori

I did have to go out and get this app, I just had to with all that it was supposed to be. Spore™ Origins, $9.99, created by EA, is a game of eat, or be eaten.

If your not familiar with the mac, or pc version (like me) then you won’t even know that it’s not the full game. The object of the game is to evolve to the creature at the top of the food chain. at first you can only eat little worm things, but as the game goes on you can eat squid, things with beaks, spike things, and caterpillar type things(don’t you just love the names I give the things?). You move your lil’ guy with the accelerometer, meaning you tilt to move, there is a setting to set the standard for where the creature doesn’t move.

There are also different levels that you play on, I personally am on level 20, and I’ve had this since it came out(yes I know some people might call me a newb, yet some might call me God(I think of myself as God)). Onto the game!

So the gameplay is pretty easy to use. There are help screens on how to play if that’s really necessary. There are two types of gameplay, evolution, and survival. Evolution is the game that I will be explaining. But, survival is where your a standard creature that hasn’t evolved and you try to dodge little balls of fury, that’s what I call them, and try to eat food pellets. You try to fill up your DNA bar, and once filled, you go onto the next level. I’ll now explain evolution, a lot of more complicated than survival. In evolution, you start out as an un-evolved, I guess you’d call it uh isopod maybe, I don’t, but that doesn’t matter.

You beat the first level and then your able to make how long and wide it is with a simple flick, or pinch. Also, you’re able to change the primary and secondary color, and the design on your creature. Then you beat a couple of levels, and then you can evolve. Now there are a few choices to evolve with: you can evolve your offense, defense, speed, or sight.
