In our local minor hockey association, picture day has come and gone. Those days are always filled with such chaos and commotion. One thing that has always haunted me is the question of why any parent would want a sports photograph of their child when they are still and not participating in the sport itself? My biggest question is why then would someone want a hockey card, baseball card, etc… of their chid standing lifeless infront of someones lens? That doesn’t capture the essence of the sport.

I have been trying for the last little while to think of some way to give parents an option to these lifeless photographs. One way would be to have an action photo day, or have a few days in which a photographer would go out to a few games and take action photographs of the players actually playing. This way parents can actually get sports cards of their children that look more like the sports cards the professionals have.

I would love to get some feedback as to your opinion. Would this be something that you as a parent are interested in, or it just another silly idea?

In the final game before regular season play the Mules took on Livin’ The Dream, a Kansas City based exhibition team. UCM won the game 101 to 72.

Last night my friend John invited me at attend the Sunday night football game in Philadelphia. I’ve been going to Eagles games with John since 1993. The atmosphere is always electric and prime time games are absolutely full of energy. Last night was a perfect example. The Cowboys and Eagles both came into the game with 5-2 records so this game was to determine who the sole leader of the NFC East would be now. Can you feel the energy?

Now a professional football game is chock full of dazzling sights and sounds. Fireworks, energetic cheerleaders, crazy fans, and superhuman football players just to name a few. But as I took my seat in the stands and looked down onto the field my attention was drawn to something different right away–the photographers on the sideline.

Yeah, I know, not your usual sight of interest for most guys my age, but I can’t help it. I just couldn’t resist studying the sideline photographers to see how they captured the game with their cameras. The first thing I noticed is that they all were wearing red vests. Not photographer’s vests either. These vests must have served either as a red badge of courage that these men and women totally deserved to be where they were or to help make them more obvious so they couldn’t hide from their environment. No camouflage here!

I also noticed that the photographers stayed pretty much in the same location. If they were on the visitor’s side of the field at the beginning of the game, that is where they stayed. If they were to the right of the player’s bench, that seemed to be their assigned location.

I did notice that they all some big glass and I mean big. This was no place to carry a point and shoot camera. Many of them also carried one or two additional cameras on their shoulders in addition to the camera mounted on their monopod. I am sure this was so they could capture the sports action in a moment’s notice.

Some photographers stood behind their camera while others kneeled behind theirs. But each and every one of them had a much better location from which to photograph the action on the field! I was jealous, too. I know I am now too old to dream of making it into the NFL. Besides, my time in the 40-yard dash is not up to what it used to be just a few short years ago. However, I do dream of making it to the big leagues with my camera.

Does anyone know where to get one of those nifty red vests and press passes so I can have the opportunity to join my heroes on the sidelines?

Dawn, Francine & I attended “BillStock” , a seminar at the great Bill Penberthy’s Studio located near Zelienople, PA. The day was extremely fun & informative. The class picture shown below is how most of us dress normally. Very Hip!  ~ Bob

This photo was taken by Dawn & I. This was one of our class assignments. Each of us had 10 minutes to try to get our models in unique poses while the other photographers watched. Just a little pressure. I call this one “Love Bites”. This picture was taken in a graveyard behind Bill’s studio.

Last weekend I took of with my ultimate frisbee team, The Natural 20s, for an ultimate frisbee tournament, the Hanford Howl, in Richland, WA. While we didn’t win any games it proved to be just as fun as all the tournaments we’ve been to in the past. For the tournament I rented the Canon 2x extender so it made my 70-200mm f/2.8 IS L lens into a 140-400mm f/5.6 lens which allowed me to get much closer to the action. The big 20 sided die in the photos was made by the awesome David Kurushima.

We have been covering the Durham County Golf Partnership Junior Tour this summer and both our on-site printing and on-line sales of our photographs have been a big hit with the kids and parents.  

As it is the last of the tour dates at the Cocken Lodge Golf Club this Sunday we decided that it would be great to offer the kids a chance to star on the cover of ”Golf Magazine”.

The cover is customisable with your choice of photographs and text, so in the above example the red circle would have the child’s name and perhaps their ranking.  We could even use your own photographs to produce a similar cover as a birthday gift for example.  We offer these magazine covers as a glossy A4 print, with or without a simple silver or black frame.  We think that this will be a great souvenir for the kids to hang on their wall and show off to their friends.  Hopefully it will encourage them to continue playing and enter again next season!

We had a great day with my daughter Mikayla & 4 of her friends, Kellee, Ashley, Jill and Layne. We went to the Southside of Pittsburgh and near PNC Park where there is such a variety of backgrounds to shoot 5 beautiful young ladies.  All of you did a fantastic job! What a day! Mallory & I finally got together for her Senior Portraits. Bob & I decided on going to Pittsburgh. It turned out we went all over the ‘bugh. First on the South Side, then to the Strip District and finally over to the North Side, in front of PNC Park. We finished just before the rains came. Whew!! Special thanks to Mallory for her patience with all the travel.  ~Dawn

Jared is a Senior at Moon Area High School and he is also the twin brother of Jordan. I  photographed Jared in my studio and  Bob photographed him at the Montour Golf Course, where he works. I have known Erin for several years. I have had the privilege of watching her grow from a young girl to a beautiful young lady. We had a beautiful day and  alot of fun photographing her Senior Portraits. Erin you have grown to be such a wonderful person inside and out. I really enjoyed the time we spent together. Mikayla had her graduation party today, Sunday June 21st. A few of her family & friends showed up, around 200. It turned out better than Dawn & I expected. We had it at the Elks Club in Coraopolis, Pa. Lori Gutt was our caterer. The food was fantastic! Lori took care of everything for us. If anyone needs a caterer, I would recommend using Lori (412-916-9060).

Nick was our DJ & kept the music pumping. We had a little issue with our bartender but got it straightened out. Below are pictures of some of the fun. Yes, that is a REAL Superbowl ring! Barb Snyder owns it. She works for the Steelers. Rumor has it she’s giving it to me!   –Bob
