In the last post I’ve analyze the situation of the main European Football Leagues; today I would like to go more in depth with the analysis of Serie A, the Italian Football League. The current situation and the outlook for the Serie A is not encouraging. After many years of great sports results for the Italian teams in the European Competition, lately teams such as Milan or Juventus are struggling to compete with other top teams. Thanks to these poor results, Italy has been overtaken by Germany in the Uefa ranking; for this reason Italy lost one team in the Champions League. This will produce very negative consequences, since Uefa gives large financial contributions for the participation in the Champions League. Just to have an idea, each team at the beginning of the competition receives around €10 million. Other prizes in money are related to the results; if a team qualifies for the knock-down round can get around €25 million and even around €50 million reaching the finals.

Moreover, another big issue is that Italian football is facing a corruption scandal; many players and teams of Serie A and Serie B are involved, being suspected to have fixed some matches. Even if top teams are not involved, this scandal will have serious consequences and probably many teams will be penalized in the next season.

According to a survey made this year by Price Cooper Waterhouse and commissioned by the Italian Football Federation, Serie A revenues amounted for around €1.6 billion during the 2010/2011 season; this makes Serie A the 90th Italian richest industrial sector. However, the costs of Italian teams are out of control and the total debt of Serie A teams amounts for €2.6 billion, increasing by 14%; 35% are financial debts, 16% are commercial debts, 21% are debts in specific sectors and the remaining 18% are other debts. Moreover, Serie A teams had an overall loss around €300 million. Only 8 teams out of 20 have been profitable the last year and if we take a look to all professional Italian clubs the situation is even worser; in fact, only 10 teams out of 109 have been profitable. For example, Juventus experienced last year the worst financial result ever; Juventus was in red for €95 million and with a huge debt level (around €250 million). However, its outlook is encouraging and probably the financial result for the current season will be better than the past season. In fact, Juventus has just moved in the new fully owned stadium and the ticketing sales boomed, increasing by 190%. Moreover Juventus has just sign a sponsorship deal with Fiat and it will receive €35 million for the next three seasons. Juventus is also trying to cut some personnel cost and it was been able to slightly reduce its players’ payroll from €71 million to €66 million. Finally Juventus has just won the Italian Championship and it will participate to the next European Champion’s League; thanks to this Juventus will be able to increase its commercial and ticketing revenues.
