I’ve added a new category that will spotlight individuals and agencies that help others in need. The American Red Cross is my first selection, the one that stood out from the crowd. This agency has helped thousands of individuals and families in crisis.

The American Red Cross has begun it’s annual Holiday Giving Campaign with a brand new Holiday Giving Catalog. Catalog donations will provide food, shelter and comfort for a disaster victim, vaccinate a child in a remote village, or connect the family of a military service member with their loved one overseas.

Visit www.atlantaredcross.org to find gifts for everyone on your list! You’ll receive free gift cards with every order to let your recipient know the gift that has been given in their name, or you can send a personalized e-card. Each gift is tax-deductible.

You can also support the work of the Red Cross by making an online donation at www.atlantaredcross.org or by mailing a check to American Red Cross, 1955 Monroe Drive, NE , Atlanta , GA 30324 or by calling 1-800-REDCROSS (1-800-733-2767).

[It's pretty obvious that the average CollegeCandy reader has some very strong opinions. Opinions th

[It's pretty obvious that the average CollegeCandy reader has some very strong opinions. Opinions that she likes to share with everyone on the site. We love a strong woman, so we thought we'd give her a real forum to discuss her thoughts, feelings, and perspectives. Every Friday I'll be featuring a hot topic (like whether Miley's a bad influence!) and leaving it up to you, the readers, to duke it out. So, read it and get your debate on in the comments section below!]

A while back we had some qualms about the big Rihanna interview and it’s timing. Wherever you came down on that argument, it got me to thinking: is it really any of our business? Celeb watching has existed for basically as long as celebrities have, but in the info-age things have been cranked up to 11 (197,000,000 hits on the search “celebrity gossip”!).

Have we gone too far?

On one side, celebs put themselves out there to be seen. You don’t become a movie or pop star today without knowing that paparazzi will be following you around. And not only do they need that kind of rabid attention to draw people to their work, but a lot of them use it to their advantage. I’m sure it’s annoying not to have any privacy, but it’s kinda hypocritical to complain about how no one will leave you alone in the magazine article promoting your new TV show. Being a celeb now is a package deal, and everybody who’s trying to break into it knows that – maybe it’s time to just suck it up and deal. Or totally embrace it.

But still, celebs are just people like the rest of us, with private lives – the fact that more people see the work they do doesn’t mean we should have the right to see the minute details of their lives. Is it really our business that Tiger Woods is cheating on his wife? That Adam Lambert and his BF broke up? Does that information affect who they are in their professional lives?

And there are a lot of things we’ll ignore in real life that we watch obsessively with celebs. Like practically all of us know someone who’s divorced, but people don’t walk up to them at parties and bombard them with questions about their ex. With celebs, that kind of behavior is fair game. Maybe more importantly though, thinking about real life, is what it reflects on us to be so celeb obsessed. I have lunch with the same girl everyday and I couldn’t tell you with certainty the name of her bf or her roommates – and yet I know Katy Perry’s cat’s name (Kitty Purry) and I’m not even a Katy Perry fan! Are we really so shallow that “knowing” celebs trumps knowing real people?

So, am I totally over-reacting? Is celeb watching just another harmless pastime for the tech generation? Do celebs really have a right to complain? Or have we seen the line in the sand and taken a flying leap over it? Duke. It. Out.

I am all geared up for the Rodarte for Target release, which will include a pop-up sale in NYC, SF,

I am all geared up for the Rodarte for Target release, which will include a pop-up sale in NYC, SF, and DC a week early from the store release, December 11-13th from 10am-8pm. I hear that only five items from the collection will be at these pop ups, but we’ll see, check out Target To Go to see addresses and such.

Since the look book and prices were just released (seen at the cut) I thought I’d plan my possible attack. Overall, it’s not exactly my personal style, but adding new fun pieces can always be great and can influence me in the future. I was worried with the Anna Sui for Target line that so many people would be wearing it I wouldn’t feel original enough. But truly, I barely see the pieces around and I feel the Rodarte line can be interpreted much more widely than some of the previous lines could.

The following pictures are pieces I’m interested in, although, I will say, the model (Jamie Bouchert- also seen at Marc Jacobs’ show s/s 09) kind of freaks me out, so watch out…

Leopard Dress: $49.99, Lace Tights: $12.99, Sequin Dress in gray leopard: $44.99, Lace Cardigan in black: $29.99, Bow belts: $12.99, Blue Dress: $39.99, Knee Highs: $9.99, Striped Tee: $16.99, Sequin Rib Cage Dress: $49.99

My main want is the sequin dress in gray leopard- ah-mazing! Also, the lace tights (cheap!), striped tee (hello, alexander wang-ish), and possibly a bow belt (bows are my weakness).

As a former themed-party-obsessed college student, I mean, who doesn’t love an opportunity to dress crazy, I feel like the leopard dress is a must-have, especially after seeing how cute it was on Dakota Fanning in Teen Vogue. Since the sequin rib cage dress has been one of the most publicized looks of the collection, I think that most people will grab that, so we’ll see. I can just see myself loving it for Halloween in fifteen years.

I will definitely be checking it out for myself, will you?!

I been watching clips of The Wonder Years and i never realized how much she messed with my dude Kevin Arnold, she played my boy out bad. I saw this clip where she straight up cheated on him…damn Winnie Cooper. You’re fine as hell though, not gonna front on that shit. I think the part that bugged everyone out the most, was how much finer she got you know? Everyone has their Winnie Cooper and once you do, she’ll FuQs with your mentals for the rest of your life.

It’s Me, Margaret. I seriously can’t think of another book that captures the insecurities of not-quite-children so very well.

I already placed holds on the next two.

The last time I was so excited about the way someone was portrayed in a book, it was Sloppy Firsts. Unfortunately, see how far that one fell. : /

It isn’t December yet, but since several Hallmark ornaments have already sold out, candy canes have replaced miniature Snickers bars, and the Best Buy® Twelpforce™ carol about the joys of getting an HP desktop, monitor, laptop, netbook and wireless router all installed by Geek Squad® has become a YouTube hit… (whew)…

The Holiday Season has started!

And with it comes the annual announcement for:

The Giving of the Toys
December 10
11 am Common Hour

For the last 13 years, this event became one of BCC’s way of getting ready for the Holidays: more than 50 offices, departments, clubs, athletic teams and campus organizations presented toys to Santa at the Student Center. The gifts were then forwarded to the local Toys for Tots campaign. One of the best aspects of the event was that in past years each group brought toys appropriate to their organization: the Finance Office donated toy cash registers and calculators; the soccer teams gave soccer balls; the International Student Organization contributed toys from all over the world; the Administration brought superheroes (really!), etc.

Student Activities is asking you to give again – each year the need grows and gets even more local with many of our students in need.

If your office or other group wishes to participate, contact the Student Activities Office at x 5033 so that we can recognize your group on the 10th. Of course, we will have hot chocolate or cider and donuts and holiday music. The Focus and additional e-mails will carry more information on the event as the time draws closer.

‘Tis the season…Let’s do it once again!

One evening, while my four-year-old little angel, Alicea, was finishing up her bath, she came out of the bathtub and yelled for her dad and I to come see her. She showed us a region on her abdomen which was protruding but complained of no pain at the time. Although we had just recently been told by her doctor’s office she was simply retaining gas, hence the swollen abdomen, we took her back to the doctor for another examination.

Upon viewing Alicea’s x-rays during the follow-up visit, the nurse practitioner immediately referred her to a radiologist for more testing. On March 27, 2009, our precious baby girl visited Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston in Atlanta for a C-T scan. When the results of the test were read to us, we were floored. We were told that she had a large “Wilms” tumor on her left kidney, which had essentially taken over the kidney and would have to be surgically removed. In disbelief, we asked the radiologist whether this tumor was malignant or benign. The radiologist said he was 99% sure the tumor was malignant. As tears flowed from my eyes, I still remained confident my baby would be just fine by God’s grace, but the incredulity was still difficult to overcome. After all, this precious little angel had just been bouncing around the house, at preschool, at church and everywhere else with no signs of any sickness or pain.

After leaving the hospital, I went home and began researching this disease online only to find out more disturbing and alarming information, most of which I could not discern. Finally, later that evening, we received a telephone call from Alicea’s surgeon. The surgeon’s voice was calm and reassuring, his words full of CORRECT information and hopefulness. After hanging up the telephone, I ran to find my daughter in another room and held her tighter than I ever had before with a renewed confidence regarding her prognosis.

On Wednesday, April 1, 2009, our courageous little soldier went under the knife to have the tumor and her left kidney removed. The surgery was a tremendous success! Our family received so much love and support from our family, friends, church family, and colleagues from school and work. For the next six days, Alicea got stronger and stronger with each visit from loved ones, and finally, she was released from the hospital. Following the surgery, she underwent 20 weeks of chemotherapy. She lost her hair but definitely not her spirit and her spunk.

On August 17, 2009, Alicea completed her chemo treatments and received a clean bill of health – she was CANCER-FREE!!! Shortly thereafter, she had her port-o-cath removed. Periodic check-ups over the next few months and in years to come are still required as follow-up to treatment, but as far we are concerned, the fight is OVER and the battle has been WON!!!

Much to our surprise initially, this story is all too familiar to so many families just like us. Like many others, until we were directly impacted by this deadly disease, we did not take notice and become involved in the fight. However, this is not something of which we are proud. There were plenty of times we could have donated money, our time or our talents to this cause and various others, but it hadn’t happened to us so it wasn’t a “priority.” In the spirit of our little survivor, Alicea, it is my prayer that our story will soften a hardened heart or open a closed mind so all we may see is LOVE for one another, so much so that no matter what circumstances we may be faced with at any given moment in our lives, we can and will weather the storm TOGETHER as we work to make life worth living to the fullest for someone who may have lost hope due to their current situation. Our only hope is that this precious gift from God – our beautiful daughter Alicea, touches the lives of all of those with whom she comes in contact through her incredible story of survival, as she has touched ours.

For those of you out there not lucky enough to know Barry first hand, he is a freelance Cinematog

For those of you out there not lucky enough to know Barry first hand, he is a freelance Cinematographer working mainly in the Toronto area, and was one of the first names I had heard reference to when looking to crew a short film. He is the go to guy in the city for top notch gear and quality camera work for the independent production. We were lucky enough to have him take some time out of his busy life to answer a few questions about working in the industry, how to prep for the future, and what motivates him to keep pushing forward.

Barry first started out working on set as an assistant producer and shooting low – no budget work with his trusty Panasonic DVX100. From there he decided to gain formal training at Humber’s Film and Television production program which honed many of the skills he had already learned in previous years in the industry. From there the next natural step was freelancing.

“I do enjoy the freelance thing a lot, the turnaround is generally always really quick so it keeps everything fresh and you’re always encountering new faces and challenges. The downside is you don’t know where the next job is coming from; but I’ve been really lucky and not much time ever passes before I get the next call.”

Currently working between Doc/lifestyle work and narrative, Barry has been able to benefit from working with a multitude of genres; often times incorporating ideas from one to enhance the other.
However, with the changes in how people watch their TV, and Movies being more and more relevant ; filmmakers have to be sure they can adapt to the future.

With his zest for the newest gear and desire to keep up to date with the pulse of all aspects of production Barry has been able to keep afloat amidst an industry in troubled waters.

“I think it’s going to be important for all filmmakers to be tech savvy as we go forward, Be able to understand the newer developments in camera gear and to make the right decisions for any given project. Understanding (and recognizing) the importance of the post-production workflow is also exceptionally important – even more so as there are that many more delivery options now ie: mobile, internet, blue-ray, etc…

Barry working with his custom Canon 7D package, photo courtesy Ryan Hughes

It definitely is changing and evolving out there. With the internet and mobile devices becoming more prevalent and traditional TV/cinema becoming less so, I think the need for more content suited to the before mentioned delivery chain is going to be demanded.“
But what keeps Barry going through these diffucult times? “Moments like going to work at 1am in the morning and knowing when everyone else is sleeping you’re off to make a movie, peering down that viewfinder and knowing you’re seeing the project unfold firsthand in front of you, and probably most enjoyably, working with the crew (specifically my tech crew – large or small) and seeing them hustle to help you get (through) the day…”

When asked about his gear, what was new and what stood out, Barry couldn’t help but mention his new on set monitor: “I recently purchased a Panasonic 8.4″ HD monitor from you guys and having a real high quality monitor that I can rely on has been great for making all the decisions I need to make regarding exposure and color. Again, having it battery op’d so I can use it anywhere without having to worry about AC power is really great.”

Thanks again Barry for your time!

SOME OF THE MOST HILARIOUS TRENDING TOPICS IVE SEEN IN A MINUTE. IN LIGHT OF THE WHOLE TIGER WOODS I

SOME OF THE MOST HILARIOUS TRENDING TOPICS IVE SEEN IN A MINUTE. IN LIGHT OF THE WHOLE TIGER WOODS INCIDENT, THESE ARE THE TOP #TTs TODAY. I LOVE READING THESE, NOT ONLY BC OF THEY WERE HILARIOUS, BUT IT ALLOWED FOR ME TO GO INTO THE MINDS OF TRIFLING NIKKAS AND BISHES WORLDWIDE. BY THE TIME I STOPPED READING, I WONDERED IF ANYONE IS EVER TRULY FAITHFUL IN RELATIONSHIPS THESE DAYS. WELL TRUTH BE TOLD, I BEEN WONDERING THAT ALL ALONG. BUT READING THESE REALLY LEFT ME CURIOUS. NOW PERSONALLY, I’VE NEVER CHEATED ON ANYONE. EVER. BUT WITH EACH RELATIONSHIP (OR TALKINTO-SHIP) I GET CLOSER AND CLOSER TO DOING SO. WHY? BECAUSE I HAVE YET. YET. TO MEET SOMEONE WHO IS FAITHFUL. MMmmmk. THAT’S A LIE. REPHRASE-I HAVE YET TO TALK TO SOMEONE,T HAT IM ACTUALLY INTERESTED IN THAT WAS FAITHFUL.

I HAVE TWO CLOSE FRIENDS, I CALL ONE OF THEM MY ANGEL AND ONE MY NON-ANGEL( I DON’T THINK IT’S WISE FOR ME TO HAVE FRIENDS I CALL THE DEVIL AROUND ME. LOL) LIKE YOU KNOW THE IMAGE OF A PERSON WITH AN ANGEL AND DEVIL ON THEIR SHOULDER? WELL THAT’S HOW I SEE THEM. MY ANGEL FRIENDS TELLS ME TO TREAT THESE MEN HOW YOU WANT TO BE TREATED, EVEN WHEN THEY TREAT YOU WRONG. SHE SAYS IF I DO THAT, ONE DAY GOD WILL REWARD ME WITH SOMEONE WHO WILL TREAT ME JUST AS WELL AS I TREAT HIM. I AGREE WITH HER. TO AN EXTENT. I MEAN I’M NOT GONNA LIE. I’VE BEEN IN A TALK-SHIP WITH SOMEONE I KNEW WAS DOING ME WRONG. I CUSSED THEM OUT. CALLED THEM EVERY IMPURE NAME I COULD THINK OF. BUT AT THE END OF THE DAY, I WENT THROUGH A PERIOD WHERE I WOULD STILL “CHECK ON THEM” TO MAKE SURE THEY WERE OK, BC THEY HAD SHARED THEIR SOB STORIES WITH ME AND I STILL FELT BAD FOR THEM. I ACTUALLY STILL DO THAT. I MAY DEAL WITH A NIKKA I KNOW IS THE DIRTIEST KIND OF DIRTY IN THE WORLD, AND I’LL CALL HIM EVERYTHING BUT THE CHILD OF GOD. I CURRENTLY HAVE SOMEONE SAVED IN MY PHONE AS “DICKHEADASSNIGGA”. BUT AT THE END OF THE DAY, WHEN I SENSE SOMETHING MAY BE WRONG, I STILL TEXT AND ASK IF EVERYTHING IS OK AND ENCOURAGE HIMTO BE CAREFUL, BE SAFE. BECAUSE I CANT HELP IT. WHEN I CARE FOR SOMEBODY, I GENUINELY CARE FOR THEM. DO I GET THE SAME IN RETURN? NO. BUT THERE’S NOTHING I CAN DO ABOUT THAT BUT TELL GOD TO KEEP THOSE KIND OF TRIFLING QUALITIES OUT OF MY HUSBAND. I MEAN I LITERALLY TELL GOD ABOUT THESE DUDES, AND I JUST ASK THAT WHOEVER MY HUSBAND IS, PLEASE DON’T LET HIM BE LIKE THIS. AND I KNOW GOD HEARS ME AND WILL REWARD ME FOR STILL GENUINELY BEING CONCERNED FOR THESE TRIFE ASS NIKKAS, DESPITE HOW THEY ACT. BUT THEN I HAVE MY ‘NON-ANGEL’ FRIEND, WHOSE PHILOSOPHY IS COMPLETELY DIFFERENT. HER THING IS: FUCK THESE NIKKAS. THEY GONNA DO IT TO YOU SO YOU MIGHT AS WELL JOIN IN ON THE GAME. DON’T GIVE UR HEART TO DEEZ DUDES, BC THEY GONNA RUN OVER YOU, ETC., ETC. SHE HATES TO HEAR ME TALK ABOUT ONE, EXCLUSIVE DUDE. SHE BELIEVES IN HAVING A ‘BACKUP PLAN’. I AGREE WITH HER TOO TO AN EXTENT. AND WITH EVERY NEGATIVE EXPERIENCE, I AGREE WITH HER MORE AND MORE. I THINK OF KANYE’S “HEARTLESS” WHEN I THINK ABOUT THAT IDEA. WHY NOT BE HEARTLESS? IF I DON’T GIVE YOU MY HEART, THEN YOU HAVE NOTHING TO BREAK. NOTHING TO HURT. NOTHING TO DISAPPOINT. I’LL HAVE NOTHING TO CRY OVER.

I WAS LOVIN MELANIE FIONA’S “AND IT KILLS ME” FOR A WHILE, UNTIL THE LYRICS STARTED HITTIN ME TOO HARD. LANGSTON HUGHES, HAS A POEM CALLED “A DREAM DEFERRED” AND IT TALKS ABOUT WHAT HAPPENS TO A PERSON’S SOUL WHEN THEY CANT ACCOMPLISH THEIR DREAM, HOW IT AFFECT THEIR LIFE. I’LL POST IT ONE DAY. BUT NEWAYS, I WAS THINKIN OF HOW “ A LOVE DEFERRED” CAN KILL A SOUL TOO. KEEP BEING THE ONE GIVING YOUR THOUGHTS, FEELINGS, BODY, AND EMOTIONS TO SOMEBODY WHILE THEY REGARD YOU AS SHYT AND SEE HOW THAT AFFECTS YOUR HEALTH. YOUR LIFE. AS HUMANS, I DON’T THINK ITS NATURAL FOR US TO NOT BE SO INSINCERE WHEN IT COMES TO LOVE. I DON’T THINK IT WAS MEANT FOR US TO HAVE #SIDECHICK AND #SIDENIKKAS. BUT WHEN YOU LIVE IN A SOCIETY, WHERE NIKKAS “TELLIN HER SHE’S THE ONE FOR ME” AND THEY NOT EVEN PLANNIN TO CALL, THEN MAKE MATTERS WORSE THEY “WANT THIS SHYT FOREVER MAYYNE”…WHEN YOU LIVE IN A SOCIETY WHERE THAT’S ACCEPTED AND RESPECTED. THEN WHAT CAN YOU DO? WHAT DO YOU DO? HOW DO YOU SURVIVE? HOW DO YOU KEEP LOVE FROM KILLING YOU?

From Donna Flora, one of SL’s most talented and beloved designers of haute couture fashion, comes Chiara, a stunning semi-formal dress with a uniquely designed, sculpted prim skirt. Take a look:)

The variety of designs you can see at the Donna Flora main store is almost overwhelming, and it takes quite a bit of time to get a good look at everything! Given the high quality and the rich detail in every design, this is no surprise indeed. Chiara comes with a classically cut shoulderless bodice in a beautiful cream colour and a glittering golden trim along the upper edge, and sports a lovely arrangement of flowers and leaves in white, cream, and bronze, which sits atop the real eye-catcher of this dress: the multi-layered skirt. Each layer features the same golden trim which just seems to shine and sparkle with every move you make, and the skirt bottoms out toward the back in a gorgeous pattern of black and bronze, with even more sparkles of gold:)

For those occasions when a full evening gown is just a little bit too formal, Chiara is the perfect choice for being elegant, sexy, and absolutely stunning to boot. With this and other designs from Donna Flora, you really cannot go wrong – visit the store today and see for yourself:)

Kathleen Iverson, PhD, and George Vukotich, PhD, both Assistant Professors for RU’s TRDV program, worked together on the headlining article of this month’s issue. Titled, “Performance Mapping: A Visual Approach to Performance Improvement,” the article outlines the value of creating concept maps to plan and organize learning and performance interventions.

Take a look at the article here. While you are there take a few minutes to review some other great content including:

“The 5 As: Framework for Business Results” by Stephen J. Gill and Sean P. Murray

“The Three Challenges of Selling Human Performance Technology…” by Paul D. Swan, PhD, and Darryl L. Sink & Associates

“Tales from the Field: Three Types of Systems Necessary in a Systems View” by Donald Winiecki, EdD, PhD

Foreignity Entertainment and Miami based hip hop trio, The Holliwoodz, are proud to announce the debut of their new single, “Naked.” A blend of thumping party beats, tight rhymes, and huge hooks, “Naked” is an uncompromisingly powerful track, and it serves as a glimpse of their as of yet untitled album, due out in 2010. The track is quickly gaining traction at urban radio in Florida, Texas, Georgia, and other key markets across the south and east coast.

Taking Miami by storm, The Holliwoodz (Egy, G-Live, and Izaiah), are a fixture in the Miami party scene and dominate the south Florida festival circuit. With scheduled appearances at Orlando’s 11th Annual Riding Big Car Show and Concert (which boasts an attendance of 10,000), Miami’s Winter Boat Show, and the Roxy NightClub in Orlando, the group has a hectic end of the year schedule. With plans for an equally busy 2010, The Holliwoodz have no intention of slowing down. If their success at radio is any indication, the public wouldn’t let them anyway.
