inspired life-sized art, as we posed like trees and got to stretch our limbs as we drew and painted on large paper posted on the wall.  Working large, on a vertical surface, makes the act of drawing and painting very much a gross motor (rather than fine motor) activity.  The arms move from the shoulder down to the hand, and the entire trunk is engaged for balance as children paint in a standing or squatting position.

Have you seen trees?  High trees, wide trees, reaching-to-the-sky trees….

An ambitious five year old got busy with scissors to create his own chipmunk from construction paper and flower petals (for eyes) to live in his nest.

I just love these nests, and look forward to seeing them emerge each spring!

Washington Parent: The Art of Springtime

There is still time to register for Spring classes that start NEXT WEEK in Alexandria and Falls Church.  Space is limited!  Registration for Summer classes is also currently underway in the City of Alexandria and those are filling very quickly as well.

Herndon friends, remember that a second Spring Session at the Herndon Community Center will begin at the end of April, and regitsration for these classes is currently underway as well.  Hope you’ll join us.

• Sping classes at the Herndon Community Center start THIS FRIDAY, March 9.  It’s not too late to register if you haven’t done so already.   Note:  prices listed in the brochure are incorrect, but prices listed in the on-line system are correct.
• Registration for the Spring session at the Falls Church Community Center is also under way.  Those classes begin the week of April 9.
• Registration for Spring AND Summer classes at the Durant Center in Old Town Alexandria begins March 28 for residents of the City of Alexandria, and March 30 for non-residents.  These classes fill quickly, so I recommend registering early to get your desired time slot!

Whether it is shopping on eBay, Social Networking on any one of the multitude of sites available for that option, or working with photos that they just want to enjoy in a mobile format, every one of you have gleamed with pride, at one time or another, at having learned a new “Trick” or unknown feature of your iPad.

I want to thank each and every one of you for allowing me the opportunity to enlighten you in whatever way possible about the seemingly endless possibilities of 21st Century technology in general.

For those of you interested, there has been interest expressed in a continuation of the “Getting To Know Your iPad” class.  There is a very good possibility that an “iPad 2″ class may be offered in April so, for those of you interested, I would encourage you to keep an eye open for OLLI Newsletter announcements in those regards and I look forward to seeing you then.

For the rest of my students, I’ve appreciated our time together and hope you go on to get maximum fulfillment from the accomplishments you can enjoy with your iPad’s and iPad 2′s.

With winter weather slowly sneaking up on us, it seems like a perfect time to add a little excitement into our routine. What kind of excitement? New art classes, obviously! Registration is open for our spring art classes that start later this month and we’ve really got something for everyone! This spring we are adding open studio time where you can drop in (no registration required), have access to a variety of supplies and an art instructor will be available for one on one assistance. MONDAYS

Arts for the Classroom – CEU Credit Available

5:30 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. from February 20 – April 2 (7 weeks)

$75 for Non-GAC Members, $65 for GAC Members

Teachers, this is for you! A rotation of art forms will be taught for use in the classroom, including paper mache, puppet making, painting, and drawing. Cost includes all supplies. Limited to 10 students. This class offers an option for 1 CEU credit for an additional $15.

TUESDAYS

Adult Pottery Class

10:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. from February 21 – March 20 (5 weeks)

$75 for Non-GAC Members, $65 for GAC Members

Back by popular demand! Acclaimed local potter, Mr. Richard Dattel, will teach participants how to throw a variety of pieces on the ceramics wheel. Cost includes all supplies. Limited to 5 students.

Painting for Beginners – CEU Credit Available

5:00 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. from February 21 – April 3 (7 weeks)

$75 for Non-GAC Members, $65 for GAC Members

Learn the basics of painting, from drawing a base to the finished product. Local art teacher, Ms. Tracy Norell, will guide you step-by-step to make your painting a success. Cost includes all supplies. Limited to 10 students. This class offers an option for 1 CEU credit for an additional $15.

Sing a Tune!

5:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. from February 21 – April 3 (7 weeks)

$60 for Non-GAC Members, $50 for GAC Members

Have a youngster that loves to sing? Local music teacher, Ms. Leanna Salley, will teach the basics of music, singing, and vocal techniques to 5 – 8 year olds in this weekly class. The last week will be a performance. Limited to 10 students.

THURSDAYS

Open Studio Drop–In Sessions

5:00 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. from February 23 – March 22 (5 weeks)

$5 per session, no registration required

Looking for a break in the week to be creative? The Greenville Arts Council is offering open studio drop-in sessions this spring where you can make any kind of art your interested in. Local art teacher, Ms. Alana Burman, will be on site to provide lessons or assist with projects.

Monday marked the start of the traditional Spring term, but the college offers additional opportunities in the coming weeks. Express classes start Feb. 6 and the second session of Modmester classes begins March 12.

Express classes are 12 weeks, while Modmesters offer eight-week classes.

For example, internal newsletters are often delegated to the admin staff, and they fumble around, assembling it as a word document. Often the content is applicable, but the writing quality and the design lacks professionalism (to say the least).

Face-to-face communication is another underestimated and under-used form of communication. It’s like people are afraid to leave their offices and talk to one another. I receive many emails from co-workers that could be dealt with by a short conversation. This lack of face-to-face communication creates distance between co-workers and less cohesive/team mentality.

Internal communications should not be overlooked as an extracurricular task, but should be a priority of the PR personnel to ensure productivity, informed staff, good moral, create a sense of belonging, give a oportunity for input and overall success of a company.

Last Spring, I took the Events Management course and it was the best class I have ever taken. Everyone in the class got more one-on-one interaction with the instructor and I had the time to focus in depth on the course material. Also, I was able to bond better with my classmates, because I was able to devote more time and energy to our group assignments.

Even though I may have initially preferred to spend this time under the sun, I realize now exactly how much more I got from taking this one class. So, not that this will surprise anyone, but I will definitely be taking the Internal Communications and Organizational Dynamics course this Spring.

The first is that taking courses during Spring and Summer gives students the opportunity to earn credits ahead of schedule.

Secondly, because Spring and Summer courses are typically six to eight weeks long this allows students to spend all their focus on the specific course(s) they are taking. This can be a huge help with challenging courses that are tough to take with a full course load. In short, taking courses in Spring and Summer semesters gives students the opportunity to learn more.

Another advantage is that in Spring and Summer courses class sizes are usually smaller which means that there is greater interaction between students and instructors. This leads to a more interactive and nurturing learning environment.

Although there are many advantages with taking Spring and Summer courses, there are a few minor drawbacks. For example, you may miss out on fun summer activities with friends and families, or the accelerated pace of the course may be a little overwhelming. However in the grand scheme of things, Spring and Summer are excellent times for students to pursue their education and  it can be a worthwhile investment. So, if you or someone you know is interested in taking Spring and Summer courses at Grant MacEwan University remember to register as soon as possible as Spring classes start May 3, 2010 and Summer classes start July 2, 2010.

Students examine Christianity, Islam, Santeria, and voodoo within the African-American community from the colonial era through the twentieth century. No prerequisites required – this is a great class for upper-division elective credit or toward the new African American Studies minor.
