inspired life-sized art, as we posed like trees and got to stretch our limbs as we drew and painted on large paper posted on the wall. Working large, on a vertical surface, makes the act of drawing and painting very much a gross motor (rather than fine motor) activity. The arms move from the shoulder down to the hand, and the entire trunk is engaged for balance as children paint in a standing or squatting position.

Have you seen trees? High trees, wide trees, reaching-to-the-sky trees….

Nothing like baby animals to bring out the nurturing side in us humans, and toddlers and preschoolers are no exception. The essence of that nurturing spirit is captured literally and symbolically in the concept of the nest. And the act of nesting itself, creating a warm, protective environment in which a new life can grow and emerge enveloped by its parents and the safe haven they so carefully crafted, is truly captivating for young children, as they identify with the babies in the scenario and also get to try the parental role on for size.

Toddlers and preschoolers are natural collectors…

As the final iPad class date approaches I’ve enjoyed, more and more, watching student’s faces as they learn to master their devices. As they have learned, throughout the course, I’ve wabtched as they think of and enjoy more creative ways to utilize these wondrous tablets.

Whether it is shopping on eBay, Social Networking on any one of the multitude of sites available for that option, or working with photos that they just want to enjoy in a mobile format, every one of you have gleamed with pride, at one time or another, at having learned a new “Trick” or unknown feature of your iPad.

I want to thank each and every one of you for allowing me the opportunity to enlighten you in whatever way possible about the seemingly endless possibilities of 21st Century technology in general.

For those of you interested, there has been interest expressed in a continuation of the “Getting To Know Your iPad” class. There is a very good possibility that an “iPad 2″ class may be offered in April so, for those of you interested, I would encourage you to keep an eye open for OLLI Newsletter announcements in those regards and I look forward to seeing you then.

For the rest of my students, I’ve appreciated our time together and hope you go on to get maximum fulfillment from the accomplishments you can enjoy with your iPad’s and iPad 2′s.

The Holidays have quickly come and gone and a new semester is upon us. In the coming weeks, classes will again be in full swing. Many of us acquired new high tech gadgets for Christmas and others of us have resolved to gain more knowledge of our devices in the New Year.

In this vein, some of you may have signed up for a web design course, an iPad class, or any other of the tech courses being offered at OLLI this coming Spring Semester. For those of you planning on attending one or more of these classes, I tip my hat to you. You are embarking on a truly remarkable, challenging, and enjoyable journey.

At the rapid pace at which technology is advancing and evolving, the topics dealing with this subject can’t help but fascinate all who participate with even the slightest interest.

To all of you, prospective students or not, I hope you had the happiest of Holidays and wish you a bright and healthy New Year. I look forward to seeing some of you during free week and hope to see more of you during the coming semester.

Has anyone else realized that the more they know about public relations, the more they realize that

Has anyone else realized that the more they know about public relations, the more they realize that most people just fudge it? After I took the Internal Communications Course (one of the 2 spring classes offered), I realized that companys often underestimate the importance of internal communications and usually fudge it.

For example, internal newsletters are often delegated to the admin staff, and they fumble around, assembling it as a word document. Often the content is applicable, but the writing quality and the design lacks professionalism (to say the least).

Face-to-face communication is another underestimated and under-used form of communication. It’s like people are afraid to leave their offices and talk to one another. I receive many emails from co-workers that could be dealt with by a short conversation. This lack of face-to-face communication creates distance between co-workers and less cohesive/team mentality.

Internal communications should not be overlooked as an extracurricular task, but should be a priority of the PR personnel to ensure productivity, informed staff, good moral, create a sense of belonging, give a oportunity for input and overall success of a company.

I totally wish that more than Internal Communications and Event Management classes were offered in the spring. It is such a quick and (relatively) painless way to get a class complete. What I love about spring classes is that it is a quiet time of year (at the school anyway) and you meet twice a week so you feel really engaged with the information. The best thing about them is that they are done before you know it. So, like Torie mentioned in her spring class Blog Entry, she will hardly miss any summer sun at all. Just remember to keep focused so you don’t miss a thing. Check out the GMU website for more info and get yourself registered.

Okay, so it is that time again when you start thinking about Spring classes. I know it is a heart-wrenching decision to make when you are deciding between taking a class or going to the beach in your bikini and flip flops. To make the decision a little more bearable, and perhaps more enjoyable, MacEwan University is offering two exciting Public Relations courses this Spring: Internal Communications and Organizational Dynamics and Events Management.

Last Spring, I took the Events Management course and it was the best class I have ever taken. Everyone in the class got more one-on-one interaction with the instructor and I had the time to focus in depth on the course material. Also, I was able to bond better with my classmates, because I was able to devote more time and energy to our group assignments.

Even though I may have initially preferred to spend this time under the sun, I realize now exactly how much more I got from taking this one class. So, not that this will surprise anyone, but I will definitely be taking the Internal Communications and Organizational Dynamics course this Spring.

As you already know the 2010 Winter semester is coming up to a wrap. This is the time that the MacEwan School of Business starts to get ready for its Spring and Summer 2010 semesters. What many MacEwan School of Business students may not know is that Spring/Summer can be a great time to take classes. There are many advantages to signing up for courses between May and September.

The first is that taking courses during Spring and Summer gives students the opportunity to earn credits ahead of schedule.

Secondly, because Spring and Summer courses are typically six to eight weeks long this allows students to spend all their focus on the specific course(s) they are taking. This can be a huge help with challenging courses that are tough to take with a full course load. In short, taking courses in Spring and Summer semesters gives students the opportunity to learn more.

Another advantage is that in Spring and Summer courses class sizes are usually smaller which means that there is greater interaction between students and instructors. This leads to a more interactive and nurturing learning environment.

Although there are many advantages with taking Spring and Summer courses, there are a few minor drawbacks. For example, you may miss out on fun summer activities with friends and families, or the accelerated pace of the course may be a little overwhelming. However in the grand scheme of things, Spring and Summer are excellent times for students to pursue their education and it can be a worthwhile investment. So, if you or someone you know is interested in taking Spring and Summer courses at Grant MacEwan University remember to register as soon as possible as Spring classes start May 3, 2010 and Summer classes start July 2, 2010.

No prerequisites required – this is a great class for upper-division elective credit or toward the new African American Studies minor.
