Dr. Charles Chapel of Chapel Podiatry discusses the symptoms, causes and treatments for Ingrown Toenails.

Ingrown toenails, also known as onychocryptosis, is usually caused by trimming toenails too short, particularly on the sides of the big toes. They may also be caused by shoe pressure (from shoes that are too tight or short), injury, fungus infection, heredity, or poor foot structure. Ingrown toenails occur when the corners or sides of the toenail dig into the skin, often causing infection. A common ailment, ingrown toenails can be painful. Ingrown toenails start out hard, swollen, and tender. Left untreated, they may become sore, red, and infected and the skin may start to grow over the ingrown toenail.

In most cases, treating ingrown toenails is simple: soak the foot in warm, soapy water several times each day. Avoid wearing tight shoes or socks. Antibiotics are sometimes prescribed if an infection is present. Note: Please consult your physician before taking any medications. In severe cases, if an acute infection occurs, surgical removal of part of the ingrown toenail may be needed. Known as partial nail plate avulsion, the procedure involves injecting the toe with an anesthetic and cutting out the ingrown part of the toenail.

Ingrown toenails can be prevented by:

Trimming toenails straight across with no rounded corners.

Ensuring that shoes and socks are not too tight.

Keeping feet clean at all times.

Podiatrist Dr. Charles Chapel of Chapel Podiatry discusses Foot Surgery and Ankle Surgery.

http://www.chapelpodiatry.com

Surgery on the foot, ankle, or lower leg is usually performed by podiatric surgeons and orthopedic surgeons specializing in the foot and ankle.

Foot and ankle surgeries address a wide variety of foot problems, including:

• Sprains and fractures.

• Arthritis and joint disease.

• Benign and malignant tumors.

• Birth deformities.

• Bunions.

• Calluses and warts.

• Corns and hammertoes.

• Flatfeet.

• Heel or toe spurs.

• Neuromas (nerve tumors).

Many foot and ankle surgeries today can be performed in the doctor’s office or a surgical center on an outpatient basis. They frequently can be performed using local anesthesia, in some cases combined with sedation. Most foot surgeries require a period of immobilization after the procedures with protective devices, such as a bandages, splints, surgical shoes, casts, or open sandals. Limited weight bearing, elevating and icing the foot, and keeping the area dry are commonly required for the first two weeks following surgery until sutures are removed. Most surgeons will encourage post-operative exercise of the foot and legs to speed recovery. In addition, many patients need additional therapy or treatments after surgery in order to aid in the healing and recovery process. These may include physiotherapy, orthotic devices, and special footwear. After sufficient healing time, which varies from procedure to procedure, most patients can resume wearing their usual footwear.

In Philadelphia and elsewhere an “urban renaissance” of sorts may well have begun in the

In Philadelphia and elsewhere an “urban renaissance” of sorts may well have begun in the 1950s and 1960s, but it was not fueled by any significant return of the middle class from the suburbs. Even at the height of the 1980s gentrification, suburban expansion proceeded apace. This would seem to cast doubt on the traditional cultural and economic explanations of gentrification as the result of altered consumer choices amid economic constraints.

…

If a dimension of consumer choice certainly remains, consumer sovereignty is more difficult to defend as a definitive explanation for gentrification. The problem is that gentrification is not simply a North American phenomenon but also emerged in the 1950s and 1960s in Europe and Australia, where the extent and experience of prior middle-class (an indeed working-class) suburbanization and the relation between suburb and inner city are substantially different.

…

If cultural choice and consumer preference really explain gentrification, this amounts either to the hypothesis that individual preferences change in unison not only nationally but internationally — a bleak view of human nature and cultural individuality — or that the overriding constraints are strong enough to obliterate the individuality implied in consumer preference. If the latter is the case, the concept of consumer preference is at best contradictory: a process first conceived in terms of individual consumption preference has now to be explained as resulting from cultural unidimensionality in the middle class — still rather bleak.

…

[T]he gentrifier as consumer is only one of many actors participating in the process. To explain gentrification according to the gentrifier’s preferences alone, while ignoring the role of builders, developers, landlords, mortgage lenders, government agencies, real estate agents — gentrifiers as producers — is excessively narrow. A broader theory of gentrification must take the role of the producers as well as the consumers into account, and when this is done it appears that the needs of production — in particular the need to earn profit — are a more decisive initiative behind gentrification than consumer preference. … [T]he relationship between production and consumption is symbiotic, but it is a symbiosis in which the movement of capital in search of profit predominates.

…

Consumer sovereignty explanations have taken for granted the availability of areas ripe for gentrification when this was precisely what had to be explained.

Gretchen Molannen in a gas mask prior to committing suicide after being denied Social Security disab

Gretchen Molannen in a gas mask prior to committing suicide after being denied Social Security disability

This is a photograph of Gretchen Molannen taken shortly before her death. Gretchen Molannen was twice denied disability for her condition by the Social Security Administration in the Tampa Bay area. The Office of Disability Adjudication and Review for her case, apparently is none other than the office at Saint Petersburg, Florida. She would have filed at the Spring Hill DO located at New Port Richey, Florida.

Ms. Molannen suffered from Persistent Genital Arousal Disorder (PGAD), yet the Social Security Administration doesn’t think it was a problem serious enough to award disability. According to a press account of Molannen’s last days, “…she’d been contemplating suicide after being repeatedly denied federal disability benefits.”

Some critics may say PGAD is not “recognized” as a disability by the Social Security Administration, so they needed to follow the “law,” or follow “regulations.” As I will show you in a later post, it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see the immense range in favorable decisions rendered by Administrative Law Judges (ALJs) at the Office of Disability Adjudication and Review at Saint Petersburg, Florida. Based on the factual statistics, an Administrative Law Judge appears to have a wide range of “discretion” when deciding disability cases.

Hell! The ALJs at the Office of Disability Adjudication and Review in Saint Petersburg apparently don’t require an active case to “deny” your disability or “dismiss” a case. They’ll proceed with a “non-case” that is withdrawn and without any authorization to proceed–the bureaucrats just plow on without reading anything you send them. They could care less–

What happened to Molannen is absolutely immoral and reprehensible. The amount of sleep likely lost by anyone at the Social Security Administration who was involved in denying her disability: 0

If anyone who is reading this post is considering suicide, please don’t do it over the abuse you receive at the hands of the Social Security Administration. Call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255 (if you are a veteran press “1″). A support group for Persistent Genital Arousal Disorder can be found at: PSAS Support Group The abusers at the Social Security Administration are just that: ABUSERS.

I wonder how many people have applied for Social Security disability benefits for physical or mental conditions and committed suicide after they were denied benefits from uncaring bureaucrats? To the Social Security Administration she’s just someone else they won’t have to pay to save the government money.

[ooyala code="I0Y2s1OTrNVOkUvYasP1N5mapmhuwSJw"] SPRING HILL, Kan. – Marvin Green drives to Pa

[ooyala code="I0Y2s1OTrNVOkUvYasP1N5mapmhuwSJw"]

SPRING HILL, Kan. – Marvin Green drives to Paola, Kan., twice a week with a pocket full of quarters. The 79-year old uses the change to pay for 700 gallons of water at a self-serve water pump at Paola’s Public Works Department.

“No, I don’t believe it, but I’m doing it,” laughs Green.

He hauls the water on his flat-bed truck to his son’s house in nearby Spring Hill because his son’s family has no access to running water.

The underground spring they relied on for decades went dry about two years ago. “I would love rain, lots of rain,” says Elisha Ball.

Instead, the mother of two relies on her father-in-law Marvin Green to show up with fresh water to replenish the underground spring adding, “We don’t get the luxury of having constant water whenever we want. It’s difficult and it’s stressful.”

When the spring went dry in 2011, she assumed it would fill itself back up in a month. Two years later she’s become a believer in climate change saying, “Growing up, I thought it was just a bunch of hoopla not so much now.”

Craig Browning is the director of Public Works for Paola. He says the city sold a little more than two million gallons of water from it’s self-serve pump in 2011 and adds, “In 2012 we gave out over 2.5 million gallons and I expect that to grow…..I think people that are on well water, springs, they’re dry and we need rain.”

Browning gueses there may be a hundred households in Miami County that are not on city water and have to truck their water home to supply their basic needs.

He says it’s a good thing Paola and Louisburg jointly built a new water plant three years ago. Otherwise he says Lake Miola, which used to supply both cities with their water needs, would now be dry.

By Lou Mallory, Chairperson of the Wood County Historical Commission When residents of Wood County,

By Lou Mallory, Chairperson of the Wood County Historical Commission

When residents of Wood County, after a hard day’s work, retired to their beds on the night of Tuesday, April 8, 1919, little did they know that by early Wednesday morning April 9, 1919 many lives would be lost or changed forever.

The cyclone on that morning took the lives of many of them and many others were injured. It should be noted that many of the farmers and others had white and black tenants who lived in small “shotgun” houses and were not built to withstand high wind or a storm as deadly as this one.

This cyclone (tornado) was the greatest catastrophe to ever hit Wood County. In a small rural county whose population was slightly less then 2,300 in the 1920 census the loss of life and injuries plus the destruction of many houses, schoolhouses and outbuildings this storm” had a profound effect. The damages and loss was estimated at nearly a half million dollars but worst yet was the 23 county residents whose lives were lost, and the 56 others who were injured. The damages covered the 71 homes completely wrecked and the 55 others damaged along with two schoolhouses.

The lives lost in this catastrophe were more than the county lost in the First World War just ended.

As bad as the storm and the deaths, injuries and property damages that occurred If not for the residents who heard the wind and rain and went to their storm cellars from the reports gathered about 50 residents had escaped physical harm while their dwelling places were completely destroyed.

The storm entered Wood County about a mile and a half southeast of Mineola and was said to have cut a path a mile wide through the entire county.

Some of the areas documented to have sustained heavy damage were Mineola, the Lake Fork area, and the communities of Oak Grove, Stout, Vernon, Westbrook, Musgrove and Spring Hill. After the devastation caused in these small communities, they began to decline and are today gone and virtually forgotten.

Based on both oral and written reports, the storm is believed to have first hit Canton this morning and that is documented by a Dallas Morning News article dated April 10, 1919. Other Dallas Morning News reports of April 10 described the damage done in the Winnsboro area, and another tells of the storm that hit Bonham the same morning.

The storm in the Bonham area causes extensive damages, and it was reported that the storm first struck near Trenton and extended in spots to the Red River.

The citizens of Wood County weathered this catastrophe and through the years have worked hard to bring back the beauty and splendor or this beautiful area of East Texas.

Definition: A mulligan, most simply put, is a “do-over.”

So over last summer I refinished a matched set of chairs. One sold right off the bat

The other one sat waiting….When I say waiting, I mean waiting for me to come up with a better idea for its new life.

So that’s when I thought Mulligan!!! What better color for a mulligan chair than green. I got the idea for the foam flowers from this great website http://thelittlebrownhouse.us/2012/03/25/whimsical-chair-with-ce-ce-caldwell-chalk-paint/. Added some fun fabric and here it is!

The chair was originally painted with spray paint in Dover white, I gave it a light sanding heavier in certain areas to distress it.

Then I added the foam flowers and painted over the entire chair with 2 coats of CeCe Caldwells in Spring Hill Green. I then sanded the chair again to let some white peek through. Added a coat of wax.

I added some fun fabric and its ready for its new life

This was a fun and easy project loved the idea of the foam stickers and as always CeCe Caldwells paint is a pleasure to work with.

Summary - In Isle of Joy Franklin Daugherty skewers “Old Mobile” – the blue bloods in Mobile, Alabama, who control social life in “The Port City.” The novel centers on a young woman named Margaret Constance McCorquodale who aims to transform sleepy Mobile into the world center of post-modern thought. But Daugherty’s real aim is to caricature Mobile – and at that he is very successful.

Review - Way back in the 1980s, Mobile author and University of South Alabama faculty member Franklin Daugherty began publishing a serial in The Azalea City News. The serial was a wicked satire of Mobile’s upper crust. In 1988, Daugherty published the serial as a novel titled Postmodern Times. Still later, Daugherty rewrote the serial and published it as the novel Isle of Joy.

(The title Isle of Joy is a reference to Mobile’s Mardi Gras. During the final days of each Mardi Gras, King Felix supposedly comes to Mobile to rule over the celebration. The rest of the year, he lives on the mythical Isle of Joy).

Three Threads

In a relatively-short book, Daugherty manages to weave together three main plots (and several subplots). First, the center of the story is McCorquodale’s attempts to turn Mobile into the center of postmodernism. Second, her campaign brings her into contact with Mobile’s business community, which is busy trying to raze Mobile’s historic district so that it can construct a giant theme park called “Six Flags Over Jesus.” Last is McCorquodale’s aunt’s attempt to prove the her family members are the true heirs to the founders of Mobile’s Mardi Gras.

The first two threads are fantastic, as Daugherty uses them for comedic effect. The genealogy thread is good, but it drags a bit, as the reader can anticipate its ending.

Dry Wit

As with most satire, Isle of Joy’s journey is every bit as important as is its destination. The true joy of reading this book is Daugherty’s barbed wit. At its best, Isle of Joy will make you laugh out loud (as my wife can attest). The jokes are dry and often slipped in between the lines. Consider the following -

- When one character walks beside a highway -
“Motorists gawked at the extraordinary sight of someone walking, and speculated about her morality. A policeman on a motorcycle stopped to ask if something was wrong” (p. 17).

- The McCorquodales are…
“…one of the ‘premier families,’… of Chunchula” [Alabama] (p. 18).

- On Mobile’s government -
“Some people liked to compare local political life with that of a small banana republic, but a more apt parallel could be drawn to the court of a senile Turkish emir in a remote malarial province specializing in the cultivation of opium poppies during the twilight days of the Ottoman Empire” (p. 139).

Isle of Joy has dozens of other witticisms that one could cite as well. (The garbled newspaper editorial (on page 135) is too long to quote here, but it’s one of the funniest things that I have ever read).

Local References

Daugherty uses Mobile as a “character” in the story; he does not just set the story in Mobile, the city’s people and places are integral to the story. Those who are familiar with Mobile will love the local color. Among many other notables, Daugherty mentions -

- The neighborhoods, including Oakleigh, DeTonti Square, Spring Hill, and West Mobile.
- The Mardi Gras societies, including the Order of the Myths, the Infant Mystics, and the Strikers.
- The private clubs, including the Athelstan Club and the Country Club of Mobile.

Nitpicking

While I really enjoyed Isle of Joy, I can nitpick any book. As mentioned, the genealogy thread starts well, but gets a little old once you get the joke. Another issue is that Daugherty attempts to capture the Mobile accent. To do so, he uses phonetic spellings (such as “icek” for “ask” and “inet” for “aunt”). While I know that he wanted to capture the area through the rhythms of its speech, in my opinion, these spellings make the reader work too hard for little reward.

The Great Mobile Novel

To many, Eugene Walter’s The Untidy Pilgrim (1954) is the ultimate Mobile novel. While I like Pilgrim, it’s a conventional story that doesn’t pack much of a punch.

What John Kennedy Toole did for New Orleans in A Confederacy of Dunces, Daugherty does for Mobile with Isle of Joy, as he satirizes Mobile and it’s various “types.” Any literate Mobilian ought to read this one; people from outside the region will enjoy this novel as well.

COOPER Vuna, the Melbourne Rebels’ leading try scorer last season, will remain at the fledgling club for at least another two seasons. Financial Planner Brisbane He has performed very well on the track and the club is very pleased with him.
” Vuna’s strong form last season helped him claim a berth midyear in the Wallabies squad, making his debut against Wales in Brisbane. The Rebels are hoping for a strong season from Wallabies star James O’Connor, who played just eight matches last season because of a lacerated liver and later a hamstring strain. Rebels coach Damien Hill must decide whether to play him at full-back, inside centre or five-eighth next season.

“ROBERTO Mancini admits Manchester City’s bid to catch English Premier League leader Manchester United might prove a heartstopping affair after the champion’s dramatic 1-0 win against Reading.
