I love spring but also love summer too. I love everything in this video and I like how it easy and fun but only one thing is why I post this because it all about spring!! I really like how the makeup is easy to do and the makeup will not coming off and it water poof too. I like the hairstyle because it simple and cute also easy to do. well i think it’s safe to say that spring is here. however, i haven’t just realized this because of the weather, but by how i am dressing. i find myself reaching for fringe, hats, colorful pieces, and have started stacking on the rings. this is all resulting in outfits that i feel are great for festival season. although i’ve stuck to small concerts rather than Coachella, these outfits have been the perfect compliment to extra daylight and warm sun (that i’m soaking in as i blog from my porch).

although this outfit isn’t red, white, and blue, i think it’s laid back vibe says americana which is why i chose today’s outfit track to be “American Girl” by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. just listen along here and you’ll understand.

p.s. kinda freaking out that tomorrow will be my 100th outfit post…!

Tip: Mix something Springy with something Wintery

I’ve been working on incorporating more of my dresses into day-to-day looks for the office. This bright green dress that my mom made for me years ago works well from 9 to 5 when layered under a white button-up and mulberry sweater.

Oh yeah, it’s March.

Today was a nice, warm(ish) day and the speck of spring is right on the horizon. Coats are being switched for jackets. Lance is on spring break already! Regardless,  I’ll be in boots and gloves when I leave for work in the morning, if for no other reason than the fact that I love boots but probably also because it’ll be cold.

Can you believe it’s almost springtime? And that springtime comes right before summertime? And that before we know it, it’ll be time to wear, well, this…

When the weather is warm, I stick to a pretty strict dress code during my freetime: cuffed denim shorts (loose, and not too short), muted tees (also loose), long necklaces, plastic sunglasses, tinted lip balms and tall, tall wedges. It is a uniform. It feels effortless and doesn’t cling when that sticky-humid feeling kicks in. It is one of my favorite parts about spring. If I were spring-breaking, you can bet your ass I’d be in this.

See? This was taken on the Fourth of July (note the red and white top, blue wedges– awesome) when it was something crazy like 113 here with 90% humidity and no wind at all. Loose top + loose-ish shorts keeps you comfortable, and the wedges keep it from looking sloppy.

On a side note, can someone please notice how adorable our dogs are? 

It will get warm. It’ll get warm and then hot and then unbearable in that special Midwestern way and we’ll all raise hell about it, like always, and talk about how it’s hotter than last year, like always, and I’ll miss boot weather to pieces, like I do for those two months a year it’s too hot for boots. (I really, really like boots.) For the time being, I try to enjoy this pre-spring weather and try to wear all the pieces I’ll miss come July. Chunky cardigans with thick skirts, perhaps? There’ll be plenty of time for tees and shorts when it’s 97 degrees. Bring me those layers for now.

What are you most excited to wear when it gets warm? 

PS: And if you say a swimsuit, I’m calling bullshit. Buuullllllsshhiiittttt. I love my body, but I refuse to believe swimsuits ever comfortable. Pretty, but not comfortable. The fabric, the fit… No.

I have another school outfit for you today. Spring just felt like it was here today. The sun is beaming down from the sky, all the snow is melting, and it is getting warmer outside. And next week we will probably have another blizzard. Not the point right now. The nice weather today inspired a fun spring outfit with lots of color.

I started with my floral print jeans from Urban Outfitters, and my black booties. I want to wear them as much as possible before it gets too warm and I have to put them away for the summer season. Looking through my closet I decided to shy away from black tops I would normally grab, and instead chose a pretty vintage cream-colored blouse. It felt very spring to me. Then to give it an extra pop of color, I played with the pink from the pants, and opted for my pink blazer. This blazer is like 3 years old, and I’ve worn it less than once, but I super love it now and will be wearing it lots this Spring.

Are you liking this out? I am loving it. I wore it shopping this week, which is basically all I’ve done this week since we got our annual bonus at work and I’ve been off work all week. I didn’t stick to my budget this month because of our bonus but I worked 50 – 60 hour weeks all year to earn this bonus, so I think I deserve to splurge. =-) I will be getting right back on track with my budget starting March.

Mae’s Emporium (or Heirlooms – it’s listed as both on various outlets) is unlike any store I’ve ever been in. It holds the stuff of dreams. The vintage/antique bauble boutique is housed in a room the size of a tin can. It’s very small but packed to the literal brim with sparklers and trifles from almost every era. Jessica Graham, the lady of the shop, opened Mae’s nearly five years ago after a stint of successful trunk shoes. The shop has since become an institution for avid collectors and date-party-bound sorority girls alike. She, along with the two close friends that convinced her to set up shop, is and has always been a vintage jewelry enthusiast. They saw the opportunity to translate their zeal into a completely individual offering for our area. The shop has a short week {w-s 11 to 4ish} but it’s not for a lack of merchandise. At any time, there are pieces from the 1860s to the 1980s and almost every time in between.  Jess loves the history behind each shiny thing and that inspires her to travel far and wide in search of pretties. She tries to stay close to home for most searches, though. She (like most of us) attempts to keep her money in NWA when she can, plus she has two adorable young sons.

In my opinion, what’s extraordinary about Mae’s isn’t just its distinct place our community; it’s the range of items available, the multiple price points (multiple options for $8 to $800, most in the bottom half of that array), and quality wares. A rival just doesn’t really exist anywhere else. Take a gander at the gorgeous, expertly-styled snaps on the store’s instagram, maintained by Jess, of course.

I feel like this picture is a perfect representation for what happens each time I stop in Mae’s. I’m like, “I’m here! Make me sparkle!” I feel like I’m bursting in, bull-in-a-china-cabinet style, every time I walk into the teeny shop. Blink and you’ll miss it from the outside, the small space is a veritable treasure trove past the front door. Personally, I have always preferred pretty over practical in a gift, especially from a man. Every holiday that implies gift-giving, I tell Ro (my hubby) that I want something sparkly. He usually delivers. But, I have no qualms buying jewelry for myself. I could complete any ensemble with something fabulous from Mae’s.  I’ve worn my finds all over the place, to my rehearsal dinner, to Razorback games, to events, to work, to everything. Each piece is one of a kind and reminds me of a special time in my life.

Jess, on the origin of her store’s name:

Seven years ago (while I was still doing independent trunk shows) I bought a locket to chop for parts from a dealer in Texas. I unpacked the box of estate spoils to find a handwritten note that warranted a change of heart…the note read;

“I hope that you enjoy this necklace. I have owned it myself for over 25 years and it’s time to pass it on. It belonged to one Ella Mae Prothrow- a gift from her husband, Samuel “Boss” Cain, for her birthday. That would have been in May of 1885- give or take a year or two. Her beloved husband died in a mill accident the very day he gave her this. She wore it every day until she died at the age of 92 and never remarried. Theirs was a great love story I have cherished and I hope you will too. It should be worn and shown- enjoy!”-Fanny B

After such a tale how could I do anything to it but preserve it? Not only does that piece hang in Mae’s under glass, but we took her name as well- and MAE’S it was :)

Mae’s is partnering with Lola on the runway Friday night of NWAFW 2013 (3/15). I know I can’t wait…

I love looking through catalogs simply for inspiration on how to reuse my current wardrobe though, I will admit, I do tend to add a few pieces upon browsing catalogs. I’m a shopaholic, so what?

With a new job just around the corner, I love thinking of new outfit ideas perfect for work and catalogs are always helpful for me.

Where do you find your fashion inspiration?

I wore this out on a hot summer’s day because wearing tights was not an option This dress only cost me $15 from Ally Fashion on sale. The great thing about the Perth City store is that the downstairs section has every item on sale so you can always grab a bargain. This dress would have normally cost $40.

I wore this with a white belt, white headband, white ballet flats and a cupcake necklace. I attempted to create a nice day dress look that could be worn to high tea or a family lunch. It’s very simple and didn’t take many accessories to create.

The belt I bought in Singapore which if I remember was 3 for $10.

It has been so nice to have a little bit of a “break” from winter here for the past few days. Now don’t get me wrong- I love snow and winter and sweaters, but sometimes it’s nice to be reminded of what spring is like. Over the weekend, it was much warmer than the usual January temperature and was very sunny, I even needed to pull out my sunglasses! Today was sunny again, even though it was back to cold.

These were taken Saturday, when it was warm enough to wear capris! It’s funny to think that if it was that temperature in the summer, we would all be bundled up in oversized sweaters, long pants and winter coats!
