Today the new 1 Night 2 Days special “Foreigners’ tour” had been shortly unveiled. In the “Foreigners’ tour” the six members; Kang Ho Dong, Kim C, Lee Suguen, Eun Jiwon, MC Mong, Lee Seung Gi have been assigned to one foreigner for the new special. Today’s broadcast has shown the members pairing up and contacting their partner for the first time through the phone.

The partners were chosen through a game of “Bokbulbok” The members chooses a number each which represents the country that their partner is from. Kang Ho Dong chose India, Lee Seung Gi chose Japan, MC Mong chose America, Lee Suguen chose Romania, Kim C chose Ivory Coast and Eun Jiwon chose England.

Including Lee Seung Gi who is fluent in Japanese and the members who are fluent in Korean, Kim C is paired with a foreigner who cannot speak Korean or English at all, thus feeling troubled. MC Mong’s partner who speaks intermediate Korean makes MC Mong nervous with the words and action he had learnt elsewhere.

Kang Hodong who understands the new special, the “foreigners’ tour” expresses his great concern. “Isn’t this embarrassing our country? We haven’t even completely mastered Korean!”

PD Na Youngsuk says “It’s prepared for foreigners who may be in Korea but may not speak Korean fluently and knows little about Korea. Thus introducing them to beautiful places”

On the other hand, regarding this special, a staff says“The partners were chosen through a game of Bokbulbok” “Spending an enjoyable time together with the foreigners.” “There are times when they can understand what they are saying but there are times when they needed to use body language”

1 Night 2 Days have prepared this special since 2 months back. The foreigners will be filming at the filming location of movie “Seo Peonje” and drama “Spring’s Waltz”

Just like the Park Chanho special, the Audience tour special, the road home special that have received great interest, the interest for this special grows.

A staff of 1 Night 2 Days has said on the 6th, “We have completed the foreigners special” “Introducing new places in Korea to the foreigners who live in Korea” “ The 6 member had an interesting time during the trip without the help of translators”.

episode one ~~ ^^

review

for a first episode, it surely didn’t dissapoint. you know how sometimes when you start a new drama you go “do i really want to watch the rest of this?” well Spring Waltz is nothing like that. The providentiality of the plot line is kind of out there, so you have to have some faith in it’s believability.

summary

Eun-Young: If you love and miss that person, then love can come again when you meet again. Just like playing hide and seek, no matter where it hides or even if you can’t see it…it must be waiting at someplace for me. Amid the countless chaos, just like the sincere prayers of love. The people in love will surely meet again.

in summary, eun-young meets this girl song lee-na when she sits next to her on the airplane, and lee-na tells her all about this childhood friend jae-ha whom she’s visiting and that she made wedding “promises” to..ya da ya da. anyway, they get off the plane and phillip, jae-ha’s assistant goes up to eun-young thinking she’s jae-ha and they have a funny scene where eun-young thinks he’s a theif. >< anyway, lee-na comes just in time, and phillip takes her to jae-ha who is kind of cold and unfriendly.

later, phillip drives jae-ha and lee-na and then he sees eun-young and gets out of the car to go say hello (which believe me, is totally wierd because they don’t even know each other) and then he and eun-young go hang out, which was cute because of their language barrier. ^^ phillip invites her to jae-ha’s concert, and she accepts.

the next day lee-na is picked up by phillip and they go to where jae-ha’s next concert is at, while jae-ha gets “alone time” on the train. however, he meets eun-young who he doesn’t know is eun-young. eventually they exchange names only because eun-young spilled some red sauce on his shirt so she lets him borrow this really cheesy/cute red sweater with a teddy bear on it. anyway, she gave him his own concert ticket as “compensation” for the laundry fee. when she asks him his name he says “Chris Y.” (that’s what it said on the ticket, to his show.) eun-young thinks he’s kidding, so she said “Alice in Wonderland.” she eventually gets bored and starts drawing on the glass, and it reminds jae-ha of the eun-young of his childhood.

at the concert later, eun young saves a seat for the “Chris Y” that she thought would show up, except she doesn’t realize that the guy on the stage and the guy on the train are the same people. eun-young gets fed-up with waiting so she storms out. as an encore, he plays a song that reminded him of his childhood, and eun-young hears it and stops in her tracks.

Spring Waltz is beautifully shot, carefully arranged, filmed in stunning locations around the world

Spring Waltz is beautifully shot, carefully arranged, filmed in stunning locations around the world and set to hauntingly lovely classical and indie music(Loveholic’s “One Love” is the main theme). It is so sophisticated and restrained, in fact, that I am sick to death of it. Spring Waltz is so consumed with how it looks and feels that it forgets about the part where it’s supposed to draw viewers into the plot and lives of the characters portrayed. You get the feeling that Yoon Suk-Ho, the drama PD, was so focused on the surface aspects of this film, on painstakingly creating a beautiful look and sound – which he succeeds at so well(filming locations include picturesque, snow-drenched Salzburg and Hallstat in Austria) – that he forgot to put emotional heat and heart into the film, with the result that it feels like a still canvas, a painting – beautiful to look at, but not alive. His characters seem almost like puppets, wandering on and off screen without any clear idea where they are or why they’re here. There’s a deep sense of disorientation in the drama’s first few episodes, springing partially from the fact that all the characters are in Austria, a place not native to them – but instead of being a symbolic echo of the characters’ sense of dislocation, as other works such as Lost in Translation have done succesfully, the disorientation feels at once overt and unintentional. It’s as if, in trying to tell us that his characters are lonely and emotionally locked away, Yoon Suk-Ho instead makes us also feel the chill of that winter, so that instead of feeling sympathy or empathy with his characters we just get gradually depressed. Such at least was my impression after watching the first 5 episodes.

And who could blame him? you say. Yoon Suk-Ho, who almost single-handedly launched the Korean wave with Winter Sonata and Autumn Fairy Tale, famed drama PD, of immeasurable renown…and that I think is exactly the problem. He got complacent – became so fixated on bringing out certain facets and aspects of this fourth drama in his Seasons quartet – especially the theme of winter versus spring – that it was some time before he got around to realizing that he should be bringing his characters, not just their setting, to life. If I could meet him, I would tell him in one sentence what he needs to do: Stop being so clever and get on with the story. It doesn’t help that all the actors, with the exception of Daniel Henney(and don’t even get me started on his acting ability/screen presence) are relative newbies and clearly didn’t quite know what they were doing(I’m watching Han Hyo-Joo in the currently-airing Brilliant Legacy as well and I assure you, the difference is incredible, and lies not just in the difference in her roles – she grew a lot as an actress). It’s not that any of the actors are terrible – in fact Han Hyo-Joo seems just fine so far -but Seo Do-Young as lead Jae Ha/Su Ho possesses all the expressionless reserve and icy calm of the traditional emotionally cut-off hero(who will be opened up by heroine) without any of the saving graces of charisma or extreme good looks(he’s pretty, but in an extremely boyish way, and not exceptionally so). While Daniel Henney…well, I said I wouldn’t talk about him, so I won’t. Let me just say that I personally find him annoying as both an actor and a character, and I cringe whenever he comes onscreen.

However, I think I’ve talked myself into sounding like I dislike Spring Waltz more than I do. I don’t hate Spring Waltz. I don’t even really dislike it so far. It’s more that I’m disappointed in it – I am disappointed in its pace, its lack of forward plot movement and chemistry and fire between the leads. But Spring Waltz isn’t all bad – I really really like the set-up: an icy genius pianist who finds his childhood love again and falls for her outgoing, warm personality – and I’m interested enough in all the great possibilites of that set-up, as well as a few hints of future things the drama has dropped – to keep going, even after 5 episodes of boredom. Which must say something. And it’s not that the beautiful setting and soundtrack detract from it, on the contrary they’re one of the few things keeping me going. I just wish I didn’t have to fall back on them. For now, the verdict is still out.

And no, I won’t be doing episode summaries of episodes 4 and 5 – they were too boring and honestly nothing happened in them. Daniel Henney is nice to Eun-Young and starting to fall for her. Eun-Young is artsy and crafty and loves beautiful things(and looks beautiful while staring at beautiful things). Jae Ha is emotionally closed off and kind of a jerk, especially to Eun-Young, but is perpetually trying to decide whether he’s actually a bad guy or a good guy at heart(or so his actions impy, anyway). Lee Na is still being idiotic and chasing after Jae Ha(I’m sorry, but I have little patience for her character. Who fixates that much and for that long on someone she obviously knew in what, elementary school? Middle at most? It’s childish and immature in the extreme). The only thing of note which happened is that at the end of episode 4 Jae-Ha realizes that Eun-Young is his childhood friend, and in episode 5 he pursues her and finds out where she lives, but the two still don’t meet(see what I mean? 5 episodes! and no significant interaction between the main leads!)

I’ll get around to re-capping Shining Inheritance episode 22 eventually, but for now, I started watching Spring Waltz as a way to assuage my Shining Inheritance withdrawal until next weekend comes around. Spring Waltz bears no similarity to Shining Inheritance whatsoever except that it stars Han Hyo Joo, but I need me a fix of something Brilliant-Legacy-related and it comes highly recommended from friends. It’s the last of the Four Seasons series by director Yoon Suk-Ho(the others being Winter Sonata, Autumn Fairy Tale, and Summer Scent), and stars Han Hyo Joo and Seo Do-Young, who is currently playing in Hyun Bin’s Friend, Our Legend.

Episode 1 recap:

Eun Young(Han Hyo Joo) is a poor Korean with designer dreams who arrives in Vienna, Austria to take a look around the museums. On her flight there she strikes up a conversation with her seatmate, Yi Na, who tells her that she’s going to Vienna to see a friend whom she hasn’t seen in 15 years but whose memory she has always cherished. She shows Eun Young an article on her friend, Jae Ha, in a magazine and boasts that he will quickly become famous. In Vienna, Yi Na goes to see Jae Ha, a cold, brilliant concert pianist, but he doesn’t even remember her. The only childhood memory he cherishes is that of Eun Young, whom he knew for a brief, poignant period in middle school but afterward lost track of. Jae Ha’s manager(Daniel Henney), befriends Eun Young when he finds her wandering around Vienna rather at a loss, and gives her a ticket to come to Jae Ha’s concert in Salzburg the next day. Jae Ha and Eun Young end up sharing the same train booth on their way from Salzburg to Vienna, and Jae Ha, to his surprise, finds himself drawn to her when she reminds him of his childhood friend. At the concert, Eun Young is shocked to the find that the man she traveled with is actually the pianist she’s come to see perform, and quietly leaves, feeling embarrassed over having been rude to him. Jae Ha tells the audience that because of a childhood memory that came back to him today, he’ll play a special encore piece. Eun Young hears it as she goes down the stairs outside, and quietly sits down as the music takes her back into her memories.

______________________________________

Episodes 2 and 3 are mostly dreadfully boring childhood flashbacks, so I won’t go into that(I’m glad someone told me this was good, because I think otherwise I would have given up on this by now). However, I expect it to pick up once the present-day romance starts, and at least it’s highlighted by exquisite cinematography – the colors remind me of nothing so much as the classic French film Amelie, all gold and green and vivid shades.

This is my ALL TIME FAVourite serial. I watched this 3 times. Every episode. Well, the male lead plays the character of a musician!!! How can you not watch this? He plays the piano with his endless fingers and doesn’t smile. What more can I ask for? Bestie will probably like the ang-mo lead more. They are, after all from the same category. By the way, if you are from the land of the rising sun, Bestie will very much like to be your friend. Bestie’s past and future relationships can only be linked to sumos, somehow. Bestie is also a musician. But Bestie doesn’t have endless fingers, Bestie has korean-rice cake like fingers if you don’t mind… (image by Henry Chan):

The weekend drama “Brilliant Legacy,” starring actress Han Hyo-joo, has gained enormous popularity among viewers, recording viewer ratings of 30 percent on May 31. The main character, Ko Eun-sung, who is played by Han, is a woman in her early 20s who stands up against injustice and is determined to get back on her feet against all odds. “Good people like Ko Eun-sung deserve to be happy,” said Han, 22, smiling.

We met with Han on June 2 on a rainy day in a cafe in Apgujeong-dong. Han said, “Ko Eun-sung is kindhearted, but not as kindhearted as people think. She is frank but she doesn’t hold a grudge against anyone. I hope viewers will receive encouragement from my character, who overcomes all the hardships and gets back on her feet.”

Ko Eun-sung came from a once well-off family and studied in the United States, but one day she lost her parents, her autistic brother and all her money. At one point, she wanted to take her life, but thanks to her irrepressible energy she came to her senses and started things anew by delivering milk. Her strong personality was noticed by the CEO of a food company, Ms. Chang (played by Ban Hyo-jung), who announced one day that she would leave all her fortune to Eun-sung to teach her self-indulgent children and grandchildren. But in return, she asked Eun-sung to display her talent at quelling opposition from everyone around.

Han said, “In real life, few people get a chance to inherit a fortune only because of their kindhearted personality. But there’s no doubt that there are kindhearted people like Eun-sung in real life. I’m sure there are many of them. That’s why I don’t think this drama is purely fiction.”

Han says she was surprised to learn that her character would receive a fortune from Mr. Chang. “I was surprised to read in the script that Eun-sung agreed to receive the old woman’s wealth. I was confused. I asked myself if it’s okay to receive so much money like this,” said Han, laughing. After agreeing to inherit the wealth, Eun-sung launches a goodwill competition with Ms. Chang’s grandson, Hwan (played by Lee Seung-ki), over a restaurant that is on the verge of bankruptcy. But she, Hwan and Jun-se (played by Bae Su-bin) end up in a love triangle. Han says shyly she is excited and nervous to play the upcoming romantic scenes.

Thanks to Ko Eun-sung’s popularity, Han has received a chance to gain popularity after a long slump. She debuted in the 2004 MBC TV sitcom “Nonstop 5” and played a leading role in the 2006 KBS TV2 series “Spring Waltz.” She also appeared in “Iljimae” and “Heaven and Earth,” honing her acting skills. But her presence had remained largely unnoticed over the past five years.

Han said, “To be honest, I’ve been working hard since my debut but I wanted to make my presence more palpable, and I’ve been thinking hard about that these days. So far, I never had a chance to rest for more than two months and have had my hands full, but I failed to receive recognition for my acting or rise to stardom for my looks. I was very frustrated for a while and felt the need to set the right course for my life. Right then, I received the script of ‘Brilliant Legacy.’ I have no doubt that my character in this drama will help me change my image. So far, I have played quiet characters who had to be patient and suppress their feelings. But Eun-sung is a character who cried her heart out over her loss in episode one. I saw in her an opportunity to make my wishes come true and mature as an actress.”

Han says that in real life she tends to suppress her feelings and anger because she cares about other people’s feelings a great deal. She says she used to be very sensitive even in trivial things but since meeting Eun-sung she has become more upbeat. She said, “I want to be healthy both physically and mentally, like Eun-sung is.”

Her character has also earned Han popularity from middle-aged women, who regard her as an ideal daughter-in-law. “I’m happy to know that Eun-sung makes viewers cry and laugh,” said Han, whose makeup-free appearance in the drama has also revealed the hidden side of her beauty.

Han said, “I think viewers find me pretty because I try hard to show them the most candid side of myself. Before, I acted under the pretense of being someone else, because I lacked confidence. But even a small change can make a person beautiful. I have come to love myself and I am confident in my skills, and that apparently shows.”

The South Korean film industry has faced a downturn over the past few years, leading more Korean celebrities to pursue parts in mainstream Hollywood films. Rain was in “Speed-racer,” Lee Byung Hun is in the new “G.I. Joe” movie, and Daniel Henney is in “X-Men Origins: Wolverine,” which was released nationally on May 1.

Henney, born in 1979 to a British father and a Korean-American mother, works in South Korea as a model and actor. After finding success in TV commercials and print ads, Henney turned to acting, launching his career with the series “My Name is Kim Sam Soon,” a hit that sparked a trend of including Korean-American actors in Korean shows. He has also appeared in “Spring Waltz,” (the last of the “season” series: “Autumn Story,” “Winter Sonata” and “Summer Scent”). From there he moved to film, and was in the Korean films “My Father” and “Seducing Mr. Perfect.” Many of these roles required him to speak English and limited his Korean-language lines. Not only are his bilingual skills useful in Korea, as a native English speaker, Henney’s fluency gives him an advantage over many Korean celebrities who are just now attempting to master English to be considered for Hollywood films.

Henney plays David North, aka Agent Zero, in “X-Men Origins: Wolverine,” alongside Hugh Jackman (Wolverine, aka Logan) and Liev Schreiber (Victor Creed, Sabertooth). Agent Zero, part of a CIA special-ops team, is an expert marksman and has uncanny tracking skills. Henney and Jackman were in South Korea last month to make appearances for fans.

Henney was a potential guest at HIFF several years ago, but due to schedule conflicts, he was not able to attend.

Actress Han Ji Hye is known for her sweet, innocent image, but did you know that this beauty actually started out as a supermodel?

She gained popularity after starring in “Scent of Summer”, the third installment in the “Endless Love” series (others being “Autumn Fairy Tale”, “Winter Sonata” and “Spring Waltz”), but her status as the ’sweet leady lady’ was established with her role in the movie that cemented stereotypes about blood types.

In the movie “My Boyfriend has Blood Type B” with her then-boyfriend Lee Dong Gun. She went on to star in the #1 daily KBS drama, “I Hate You, but It’s Fine”, once again portraying a fresh, girl-next-door image.

Han Ji Hye showed a darker side in the recent drama “East of Eden”, and in her latest photoshoot for Numero magazine, she reminds us of her supermodel origins. The director for the photoshoot complimented her, saying, “She has a perfect body and expressive eyes, which make her an almost perfect model.”

The lilac flowers of summer…

Happy April Fool’s Day everyone! It’s the second month of summer here in the Philippines, and it’s getting hotter each day. Anyway, I just happened to peek my blog stats, and I was surprised to see the most viewed posts, none other than “Spring Waltz” and “Summer Scent”, my two favorite Korean dramas. Even in the past weeks, these two k-drama are consistent as the most viewed post.

The yellow flowers of spring…

I’m glad the people are still interested in these two k-dramas considering that they were shown years ago. Maybe because their love stories transcend beyond time, and can touch the heart of people, regardless of race and culture. They make us believe in the concepts of “destiny”, “sparks”, and “forever”. I admit, I still believe on these things, being a hopeless romantic myself

______________________________________________________________

Song of the Day:

CLAIR DE LUNE by Claude Debussy, a prominent 19th century French musican. Actually, “clair de lune” is French for “moonlight”. I find this classic piano piece very romantic. Whenever I listen to this, I imagine a couple dancing under the moonlight. If you watched the movie or read the book “Twilight”, this is the piece which Edward listens to.
