The most stressful non-academic activity that I had this semester was the Public Relations Societ

The most stressful non-academic activity that I had this semester was the Public Relations Society of the Philippines Grand Prix. In this kind of competition we were tasked to create a PR campaign regarding encouraging people to register and vote, and voter’s education. This is a response to the upcoming elections next year. In thinking of a nationwide campaign for the upcoming elections, one has to utilize both traditional and new social media, depending on whatever is more applicable.

Since this is a nationwide campaign we’re talking about, I thought there wasn’t that much reason for us to go into new social media yet, since people in the provinces are not heavy Internet users, if ever they do have the access. Shoot. But apparently, Web 2.0 was not going to make an appearance in the campaign itself, but in our conception of the campaign.

We have a lot of things to do in order to create a good and solid campaign that will cater to our audience. Research, brainstorming of ideas, writing the actual paper, the collaterals, and that is just for this extra project that will not even be included in our grade for the semester, since it’s a competition by the PRSP. Thus, in this project, we rely heavily on computers and the Internet for us to be able to keep up with each other and still be able to do our different tasks. The question is, how did we do it? And where on earth is the Web 2.0 appearance that I mentioned earlier?

The answer to both questions is a wiki. Yes, it’s a four-letter word that spelled a lot of difference in our group. We used Springnote for our platform. How exactly did we use it? Well, I mentioned that we needed to do research, and of course since we are a group of seven members, we have to share and explain what we find with the rest of the group. This is where the wiki was useful, because we just post the links or whatever information we have in the wiki, share the gist of the information with the group, and just direct them to the wiki so they can refer to it during the discussion or get back to it in the future.

It was very useful because it also served as data storage for our group. When we got to writing the paper, we just look for the relevant research or notes that were posted in the wiki and so we don’t have to spend unnecessary time looking for it again or asking another groupmate who is assigned to a different task, thus making our work more efficient.

There is, of course a disadvantage to our use of the wiki, or in our case, Springnote. Springnote is an online notebook, like your online version of Microsoft OneNote, that you can access using your account. Therefore, one of the basic prerequisites in using Springnote is having an internet connection. Thus, our work is greatly hindered whenever the internet connection becomes problematic, or whenever we want to go somewhere to work on our entry, we have to consider internet access, which greatly narrows down our choices. And boo for us if there is no available table in the place that we finally decide to go to.

At the end of the day, Springnote is simply a tool. Springnote in itself is not the reason that we won in our internal competition for the PRSP. The way we utilized Springnote is the reason why we were able to get results out of it. But there’s a lesson: Don’t be afraid to try new things, especially if you think it would help you. That’s very old, but it still applies.

Interests related to OpenID has been increased in Korea. After myID.net, the first Korean OpenID pro

Interests related to OpenID has been increased in Korea. After myID.net, the first Korean OpenID provider, two providers were opened personal-driven identity service. One of them is IDpia.com by Initech that is very famous of the PKI based security company. The IDpia want to differentiate itself from other services with relationship between OpenID and real-world authentication such as mobile one-time password, personal certification with consumer credit information companies and national PKI system.

The other is IDtail.com by Ahnlab that is also famous of Internet vaccine software company. Mr. Chulsoo Ahn, the founder of Anhlab has studied about venture investment in Silicon Valley after retirement. It seems for him to give a spirit to his company to make Web 2.0 start-up services. In fact, Ahnlab built a new team for start-up services, and made Pumfit.com, a digg.com style news site.

Another guys made OpenDaumID.net that converts Daum AuthAPI to OpenID. Using this, you can have own OpenID with Daum’s ID system. It’s an one example of mashup with OpenAPI and OpenID.

Also some of start-up services let user to use only OpenID such as Me2day, for micro-blogging and SpringNote, a personal WIKI and Lifepod, Ajax-based calendar. You can find more web sites to support OpenID.

Early IT movers in Korea are surely interested in a concept of Identity 2.0, but major change will be done if it is supported by big players such as Daum and Naver. I think some people think that OpenID will be another platform service in future. Yes, it is, but users cannot help choosing more trustable providers, and the best thing among them is roaming possible desktop identity system such as Microsoft CardSpace and Firefox OpenID.

With so many new innovated Internet websites along with web applications, it would only seem logical

With so many new innovated Internet websites along with web applications, it would only seem logical that we would make adjustments to these new advancements on the Internet. However, in reality we are left with the sad truth that people that do not change… easily at least. If I was to tell someone about a new interesting site, the person would probably try it out for a small duration of their free time… and that would be it. Let’s get into more specific examples…

Who would have thought that YouTube would be as successful at it is today? I mean, online video definitely existed before YouTube came into the picture. However, YouTube took the concept of video along with the right timing (video recording features on cellular phones among many other devices that had video recording functionality). During this time, people thought that video available on the computer would be slowly upgraded only in terms of quality (and possibly file size). Yet, YouTube had its own philosophy on a video sharing community while making video uploading and sharing easy and simple. Those who wanted to contribute would contribute by uploading their videos while those who wanted to just search for video and watch them had the ability to do so.
These types of innovations are also happening with practically everything. Take Springnote (http://www.springnote.com/) for example, Springnote is basically an only version of WordPad (or for those not familiar with WordPad, Notepad). By logging in to http://username.springnote.com you can sign on to your account and start jotting down things. Pages that you can make can be easily shared. With detailed privacy settings and a ton of text formatting features, having an application like this online could really our approach on taking notes – having it accessible from anywhere.
While many of the applications available today aren’t huge hits like YouTube or Flickr, I believe that the leading part to a web application’s success would be the community that generates the content viewed. People are looking to find information (and multimedia) that is relevant to them. People that have been using the Internet don’t have the same attention span as before. What developers and marketers should think first is the scale. After doing some reading and research on Web 2.0 and the Internet as a market, I’ve realized that many companies must first decide on their market scale. Success may lie more towards in terms of how relevant goals are in meeting the set scale as with Engadget. Engadget isn’t going to take over the world in technology news, but it has a few hundred thousand viewers and it works for them.

If you’re still waiting for Google to get in gear and open up JotSpot registrations again, it might

If you’re still waiting for Google to get in gear and open up JotSpot registrations again, it might be time to stop waiting. Springnote, a collaborative wiki service from Korea, has launched their English version with a good set of features. Though there are still a few rough edges, it’s worth a look if you’re after a shareable-but-secure wiki with an accessible API.

Getting started with Springnote is simple; if you have an OpenID identity, you can sign right in. If you don’t already have one, they make it easy to create one through their own OpenID provider. Once in, a few clicks will put you into your first Springnote page, presented as a lined piece of notebook paper inside a WYSIWYG Javascript editor (the editor itself has been spun off as an open source project). You can do all the expected formatting and linking and creating new pages and so on from toolbar buttons.

Sharing and security is a matter of adding other OpenID accounts, with either read or write privileges to your pages; you can also create a public RSS feed. Springnote saves everything as XHTML, and you can easily open a page as XHTML or download all of your notes together as a zipped archive, so there’s no data lock-in.

Springnote is also designed to encourage connecting its data to the world in other ways. You can use it to draft blog posts (with WordPress and Movable Type among the supported interfaces), or import Word, HTML, or OpenDocument formats directly. They also have their own open API for extension and integration, with a handful of mashups already built, including one that gives you MSN Messenger integration and another that hooks Springnote up to Flickr.

There are still a few rough edges here. I had some issues with getting the MSN Messenger integration working, and if you go too far into the mashup pieces you’ll find yourself in pages that haven’t been translated from Korean yet. There’s also not the business-application angle that JotSpot offers, so if that’s what you’re waiting for, you need to keep waiting. But for a fast way to get a shared, authenticated wiki running, it doesn’t get much easier than this.
