Karen Armstrong, winner of the 2008 TED prize, along with religious leaders from around the world, gathered on November 12th 2009 at the National Press Club to unveil the Charter for Compassion. The Charter is a single document, endorsed by HH the Dalai Lama and Archbishop Desmond Tutu among others. It was crafted by people from all walks of life, nationalities, beliefs and backgrounds with the intent to unify, inspire and bring compassion back into the heart of society. Compassion is the principled determination to put ourselves in the shoes of the other, and is often referred to as the Golden Rule – a tenet that is central to all major religions. At the unveiling, Ms. Armstrong, and religious leaders, called upon the world to make a commitment to living a life of compassion. Over 60 Charter for Compassion Plaques, designed by Yves Behar and his team at fuseproject, will be hung in significant religious and world, in cities such as New York, Cairo, London, Ramallah, Melbourne, and Buenos Aires. The design focuses on the power and meaning of the Charter’s words rather than purely the form. Consisting of sustainable maple, simple construction and laser-engraving, the plaques have a unique and iconic design reflective of the key messaging of Karen Armstrong. The text can be viewed at www.charterofcompassion.org. As Ms. Armstrong explains, “Compassion is not the feeling of good will or pity. Instead it is the principled determination to put ourselves into the place of the other [that] lies at the heart of all truly religious and ethical systems.”

The Charter of Compassion’s Call to Action

The final text of The Charter, unveiled on November 12th 2009, calls upon all men and women

to restore compassion to the center of morality and religion.

to return to the ancient principle that any interpretation of scripture that breeds violence,

hatred or disdain is illegitimate

to ensure that youth are given accurate and respectful information about other traditions, religions and cultures

to encourage a positive appreciation of cultural and religious diversity

to cultivate an informed empathy with the suffering of all human beings ~ even those regarded as enemies

Celebrating The Golden Rule

Events to commemorate the launch of the Charter are taking place across the globe from Australia and South Africa to Argentina and Thailand with more than 100 partner organizations today and in the following week. They include everything from art exhibits and film screenings to small lectures and large conferences. Religious leaders will be giving services on compassion and the Charter in houses of worship this following weekend, November 13-15.

Affirmers from All Walks of Life

Affirmers of the Charter hail from near and far including luminaries such as Queen Noor of Jordan, Sheikh Ali Gomaa, Candido Mendes, Jody Williams, Deepak Chopra and Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche as well as cultural icons Meg Ryan, Vusi Mahlasela, and Salman Ahmad.

Origin of the Charter for Compassion

A 2008 winner of the TED Prize and renowned author, Ms. Armstrong has been working with the TED community to create, launch and propagate a Charter for Compassion—a document that would bring attention back to the principles of universal justice and respect that are central to all the world’s great religions. During the Charter-writing period, people of all faiths, from around the world, contributed their ideas, suggestions and stories. “I was excited to join so many different individuals contributing to the Charter’s development. I believe that this Charter will help bring people together to recognize our interdependence, commit to furthering our mutual wellbeing, and act with compassion for all, not just one’s own group” said contributor Vincent Cheng. A Council of Conscience, made up of eighteen renowned religious thinkers and leaders, then wrote the final version. “TED is committed to ideas worth spreading, and you can make the case that the Golden Rule is the best idea humanity has ever had,” said Chris Anderson, Curator of TED. “It is an idea that builds on our fragile biological instincts to care for those close to us and extends it to all. Without it, we might already have blown ourselves out of existence. In a world where all of the big problems are global in nature, we need it more than ever. It can act as a lightning rod to foster collaboration instead of conflict between the great religions and also provide a common moral cause with the secular world.”

Karen Armstrong had a desire to impact the violence attributed to religion around the world and wanted to remind people of the core similarity that lies at the heart of all religions – the Golden Rule. Karen won the TED Prize in 2008 and the Charter for Compassion was her wish. Global participation in an open writing process was the critical starting point for the creation of the Charter for Compassion was launched in the fall of 2008 to allow people of all nations, all backgrounds, and all faiths to contribute. People from all over the world have contributed to this Charter; it transcends religious, ideological and national difference; it has been composed by leading thinkers from many traditions with passion, insight, intellectual conviction and hope.

TED is a non profit devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. TED stands for Technology, Entertainment, Design. It is an annual conference which brings together the world’s most fascinating thinkers and doers, who are challenged to give the talk of their lives (in 18 minutes). TED.com makes the best talks and performances, the ideas worth spreading, from TED available to the public, for free. The TED Prize is designed to leverage the TED Community’s exceptional array of talent and resources. It is awarded annually to three exceptional individuals who each receive $100,000 and, much more important, the granting of “One Wish to Change the World.”

Made Possible by the Fetzer Institute

A private operating foundation based in Kalamazoo, Michigan, the Fetzer Institute engages with people and projects around the world to help bring the power of love, forgiveness and compassion to the center of individual and community life. Founded by broadcast pioneer John E. Fetzer, the institute carries out its mission in a number of ways: by supporting scientific research to understand how to increase the human capacity for love and forgiveness; by convening conversations that help community leaders explore the practical application of love and compassion in their work; and by sharing compelling stories of love and forgiveness at work in the world. While the Fetzer Institute is not a religious organization, it honors and learns from a variety of spiritual traditions.

Sri Chinmoy often encouraged us to write – write about the spiritual life, write about our experiences with Guru. On one occasion Guru said to us: “Can disciples not write for one hour every day?” Later Guru, modified this to: “Can disciples not write for half an hour every day?” Perhaps Guru said this in the hope we might write for perhaps half an hour every week or even half an hour every month….

When I think about what brought me to the spiritual life, a large part was reading accounts by disciples of great Masters – disciples of Ramana Maharshi, Sri Ramakrishna and Yogananda. They all inspired me to practice meditation and the spiritual life. Now, I am also fortunate to read so many accounts by disciples of our own Guru. – Like Gunagriha’s book, the many miracle stories, Arpan’s function reports and even just short reminiscences from Joy weekends.

There can be something intimidating about writing that first sentence; the mind is adept at finding a 100 excuses / reasons / justifications to delay. But, once we clear some space and devote it to writing, we can often be surprised at how beneficial writing is. I feel it is somewhat like talking to new disciples. As Guru says, when we talk to new seekers, it brings to the fore our good qualities, and reminds our forgetful mind of all the many good experiences we have had in the spiritual life. It is the same with writing, it helps to relive profound experiences and strengthen our aspiration.

Perfection and Speed

Both perfection and speed are aspects of Sri Chinmoy’s path. Guru, of course embodied both; with tremendous dynamism he could also work with great perfection. However, if we start with an idealised model of perfection, our

clever mind may just use this as an excuse never to start. “I’m not a writer, other people can do it better e.t.c.” But, we need to start where we are. It’s best just to write and allow the words to flow; it can always be improved later. (and thanks to all those who send me corrections for my second grade grammar standards… )

I remember one experience as a new disciple. It was my first family Christmas after becoming a disciple. I found the party atmosphere difficult; I just couldn’t enjoy the same things I used to before being a disciple. I remember becoming somewhat wistful and unhappy, but, then I just started writing on a spiritual topic. I don’t think the article was any good, but, it did my consciousness alot of good! The mild unhappiness left and, for the first time, I realised the power of writing as an aspect of spiritual sadhana.

I think next time its not just wise to do pre-entry on races actually. Well unless if you know that you are going to be injury free for the whole race series, then yes it is wise and you save money. I never did think about that when i pre-entered the whole long races of Sri Chinmoy. I missed 2 races, and this November 22, I downgraded from half marathon to 7 KMs.

Why? Because i know I am not fully recovered from injuries and I havent been training enough. I emailed the organizer and it was not difficult and I was moved from half marathon to 7Kms instead.

Using public transportation this time as John went to race at SMC for 10KM at Smithfield, it was a mission but we made it with lots of time to stretch, warm up, go to the toilets and drink water. It was a forecast of 40 degrees everywhere in NSW and glad we were starting bit early like 8, not.

Start was few minutes later and the temperature was rising. I feel sorry for the half marathon runners. Now I was glad I downgraded my race distance. The Half marathon runners started and 7Kms and the 4Kms. All Woodies, Tez,Me,Peta,Thalia and Mark are all doing 7Kms. Kerry is on the sidelines supporting Peta and the Woodies. And oh, i was approached by a girl who is a reader of my blog, her name is Kris.

It was a slow start, having have ran this course once for a 12KM distance which is not that great, I know it is not a PB course for me. Its a cross country course of mostly grass, root thumps, and sand! Oh don’t forget the palm fringes on a single lane zigzaggy path. On the loop back to 2Kms, I missed the water station. It wasn’t 41 degrees yet that time, however I can feel that it was hot and it was tiring me easily.

I tried not to think about missing the water. The grass was not easy to run compared to a tarmac, and I can feel the piriformis acting up again and wanting to walk but I just did not. I did not because I kept on reminding myself my uniform says Woodstock Runners, not walker! I was puffing, something is really wrong lately on my breathing, I wasn’t this bad last year or few months ago. It could be my asthma coming back. Injuries and now asthma. I wonder what’s next?? I am very frustrated with this. Anyway, moving on …

Tez was running with me for the first 3 Ks and left, we were behind Mark and Thalia who caught up on the 2nd KM and Tez speeded in front and left, I was behind Thalia and I told myself if i just kep on tailing her I will be alright, I will try to keep up with her and I will be encouraged not to walk. Although they were not racing as they just got back from Holidays.

2nd attempt, I overtook Thalia, somewhere a small hillish mound and saw Mark ahead, same thing, If i keep on keeping up with Mark I will be alright, no walking, and harden up. suddenly Mark, somewhere back at the palm “village”,, he just slowed down, I thought he might have waited for Thalia. I can’t wait till I cross the finish line. It was hot and dry. I stopped in water station if i can and drink and splashed myself with water.

I kept looking on kilometer markers, saw the 6Km at last, 1 more kilometer means more than just 5 minutes and no walking, keep on running i kept telling myself. There’s the finish line. Just run, puking moments twice before the finish line oh well, I’ve made it.

As usual the gool ol pancake and fruits after the race is good. We waited till the awarding for the 7Kms was done. Organizers did well for the 7Kms and 4Kms I guess, and their were enough water station and markers. I could not speak for the half marathon markers but I’ve heard that there are lack of direction from marshals for turnaround for the half marathon runners under that big tree.

In your outer life

If you can feel

consciously and soulfully happy

Even while doing

Ordinary, mundane things,

God will consider this

Your real meditation

~Sri Chinmoy

We all go through rough patches. Life gets busy and stressful, and that can affect our ability/desire to meditate. Worrying about work or school, trying to stave off a cold, and trying to plan life in general, does not exactly create a Zen mood that is conducive to meditation. So maybe you tell yourself that you’ll meditate when you “have more time.” Go ahead…raise your hand if you’ve done that. *raises hand!* Well, like me, you’ve probably found that this can lead to loooong periods of not meditating at all because you keep thinking you’ll be able to find time the next day.

What would really help, is if you do something simple every day (or every other day) to keep your spiritual life healthy. So, the next time you get stuck, try using some of the methods discussed below to help maintain your meditation practice.

Work with something that you connect with easily and that you enjoy using. For me it’s usually crystals and tarot. Even when I have trouble meditating, I just lay down with a crystal (or several) and let them do their thing! When you are stressed, try not to do too many actual tarot readings because it’s hard to stay objective; and you might just end up confusing yourself more. Instead, you can pull a card each morning and meditate on that card. It helps give you some focus and guidance during the day. (If you aren’t comfortable using the Tarot, you can purchase Oracle cards. Some of them have messages written on them are especially good for daily guidance.)

Light candles instead of turning on the lights.(But make sure you don’t end up straining your eyes. Go ahead and use a lamp if you’re going to read!) Candlelight is always so soothing, and it puts you into a relaxed and receptive state. So even if you don’t meditate, your consciousness is still being brought into a state of openness and creativity. Just think of the Goddess Brigid’s flames of inspiration.

Write in your journal, or write a letter to God/dess or your Angels. It’s a wonderful way to sort through your thoughts. Write what you are grateful for, what you are nervous or fearful about, what you need guidance about. Write about the big things and the little things. Just let it all out. It’s between you and your Spiritual Team (and they love you and want to help you! Just ask!)

Listen to music and dance. Sound is such a powerful tool. Ohm: the sound of creation. So listen to music that soothes, uplifts and empowers you. Listen to songs that you connect with good memories that’ll make you laugh! And dance! Your entire being (including your body) is a manifestation of Spirit’s creative force. So using your body as a way to connect with the Divine through dance is not wrong. Dance like a god/dess. Dance like you are the wind soaring over plains. Dance like you are a thunderstorm. Dance by yourself, with your partner, with friend…just dance! (And of course playing an instrument falls under this category!!!!!!)

Pray. Say the prayers or invocations that make you feel reassured. Say the Rosary, recite mantras, read the Charge of the God/dess, state affirmations, read from Sacred Texts. Write your own prayers

Make sure you bless your food and water. It really helps. Appreciate and be aware of the food you are putting into your body. I personally find tea to be incredibly comforting. Plus I love the blend of water and earth! The way the herbs infuse the water and transform it into something else entirely is a magickal process – alchemy.

These methods don’t require a lot of time, and they can help you regain and maintain your spiritual, emotional and mental balance. Give it a try!

What other methods do you use to maintain your meditation practice? Comment below!

A frenzy of record-breaking took place at the 16th Impossibility Challenger, with 11 Guinness and 7 world records broken. The event was held on 14 November 2009 in Auckland’s Trusts Stadium in New Zealand, the first time it has ever occurred outside of Europe. Swiss weightlifter Albert Walter, who already participated in various editions of the Impossibility Challenger Games in Switzerland and Germany, set two Guinness world records for ripping a 1440 page phone book in 6:83 sec and breaking a 30cm long and 9.5 mm wide carpenter’s nail in 3:24 min, both with his bare hands. He especially traveled to New Zealand for this event. Alastair Galpin, one of the most prolific Guinness record breakers in the world, set nine new Guinness records in the same day, including the most high-fives in a minute and the furthest distance spitting a ping pong ball. Four employees of New Zealand tyre company Frank Allen Tyres smashed the world record for the fastest 4 wheel tyre change on a car, reducing it from 2 min 30 sec to 1 min 25 sec. 20 people constructed a 270.3 metre balloon chain in one hour, beating the previous world record of 216 metres. Plenty of new world records were set including the fastest mile pushing someone in a supermarket trolley (8 min 14 sec), the furthest distance traveled by a balloon powered car, the tallest hat made from balloons (3 metres 20 centimetres) and the world’s largest dot to dot drawing.

The Impossibility Challenger was founded in 1982 by the accomplished weightlifter and runner Sri Chinmoy (1931-2007) to promote self-transcendence, the ideal of challenging limits and going beyond previous accomplishments. More news on the NZ event on the website: www.impossibilitychallenger.org.nz

This is the cover of the original edition. The poems can also be read online on srichinmoylibrary.com.

Let me quote 2 of the poems:

HE IS PLEASED WITH EVERYTHING

He was pleased with nothing;
Therefore God was not pleased with him

He is now pleased with everything;
Therefore God has given him two things:
Satisfaction-throne,
Perfection-crown.

I LIVE IN THE HOPE

I live in the hope of meeting Him.
I live in the hope of loving Him.
I live in the hope of pleasing Him.
I live in the hope of fulfilling and manifesting Him.
I live, I live.
