Perfekt musikk for min krakilske hjernemasse.

“Yessss!“

======================================== New York, Madison Square Garden, July 27, 2009 I knew from

========================================
New York, Madison Square Garden, July 27, 2009
I knew from the moment I exited the Times Union Center that I would not experience the full impact of Green Day’s music at this concert. You see, I had seats… high into the dead zone of MSG. So very sad. Nonetheless, the crowd around me (except for the three people next to me who kept getting out of their seats) were pretty great. There were four young men in crazy hats (Kings for a Day?) who very politely let us know that if their giant sombrero hats got in the way of viewing to say something. And I did. But, my friend who went with me is a only a nominal Green Day fan and while I love her, I don’t think she enjoyed the show very much. I have sworn never to again attend a Green Day show with someone who is a nominal fan. It’s all or nothing for a Green Day show.

Green Day concert seats - MSG1

I’ve seen a few concerts at Madison Square Garden and for most of them, I’ve been in the 300 sections, high up under the skyboxes. I hate sitting there. U2 sounded like they were underwater when I saw them there years ago. I noticed the sound difference most specifically during this show when I went down toward the front of the stadium after Billie Joe frightened the MSG security guards by urging fans to (slowly) come down and fill out the pit. Looking from up above, I had a feeling he would do this since the pit on stage right had a slight void of bodies in it. Of course, as usual, I didn’t get down there in time (yes, I left my friend in the dust), and of course, as usual, I chose the wrong aisle to go down because Billie came up to the stadium on the aisle next to me. I’m pretty sure they were clearing that area anyway so that he wouldn’t trip and fall. And he didn’t! Yay! I marched back up to my seat and longed for that pit. My goodness.

High Five

Other highlights of this show for me where Billie telling the story of fighting with Adrienne over the phone when he was out with friends, while some guy drove by and said, “Fuck you Billie Joe! Green Day sucks!” Billie Joe then went on to relate how he beat the crap out of the guy, goes back into the bar, does some shots and forgets that Adrienne is still on the phone. Apparently this all took place during the tough final record-mixing time. Those days are over now, it’s all good.

I love storytime!

Green Day at Madison Square Garden 1

I think the thing that I missed most in this show was the chance to dance, play and interact more directly with the band. Billie, Tré and Mike work the crowd like you wouldn’t believe. They draw you into playtime, even if seeing them at great distances. Take it from me, the closer the better. Even if it’s only been three times so far (tomorrow’s MSG fill will make four, all this year) seeing them, I completely regret not taking the opportunity a long time ago. Oh. Well. After only a few shows, I kinda feel addicted now. Is this how all those old Deadheads felt, too? Hmm.

Liz and me at the Green Day show, MSG1

From an audience participation point of view, this show had some great moments. I can’t remember exactly when but at one point a construction hat pops out of the pit, and Billie puts it on. He throws it back to the pit a few seconds later. The construction hat will be back.

Billie in the epic-failed stage dive guy's construction hat - GDA

“East Jesus Nowhere.” What can I say about this song except for ‘thank you.’ From the very moment when the screeching, metallic quality of the chords start, a powerful moment begins which does not disappoint. The band finds a young, preferably innocent, child upon which to perform a ritual known as “saving the soul.” Sometimes the kids are scared shitless, and sometimes you get a kid like Elijah… with a Biblical name no less… at Madison Square Garden. Good times. Elijah played his part perfectly and deserved the chant that his name got. Billie was pretty good, too.

“Longview” was surreal. I don’t remember the first verse singer, but for the second verse singer, we come back to the construction hat. From what I understand, some kids from Oakland traveled from California to see the band. The guy with the construction hat being one of them. Well, he got on stage and in a heavy metal sorta Gwar-like voice started the lyrics. Which was kinda cool for a word or two. And then he stopped in the middle of the verse and made Billie sing the song. A bit of a bummer, I’d say, particularly since the second verse is the best verse in “Longview.” In recompense, Billie had him stage dive, which he gladly did. He ran down the cat walk at high speed down and…. he jumps and… nobody catches him. Oops. This clip has the scene, which ends around the 3:37 mark. LOL funny. Luckily, the last dude totally redeems the moment with a great performance and a even better stage dive. As a bonus, the clip also has Basket Case, always a winner. (Hurry before it’s too late!)

Green Day at Madison Square Garden, July 27, 2009

I think this night was the first time that they played “When I Come Around,” which may have been a request from the floor. Lots of fun signs pop up with requests, but alas, I can’t think of any right now. I was made happy by it being played. Yay! Disappearing Boy made its second appearance on the concert tour (it was also played in Albany), but on this night it was dedicated to Billie’s oldest son, Joey.

Besides the fact that Green Day played, which is the greatest thing in the world, an even greater thing happened during the 40-hour song, “Jesus of Suburbia.” On this tour the song, or portions of it, have been given over to aspiring musicians from the audience in a sort of crap-shoot way (see Construction Hat Guy). Usually it works out well. Occasionally, it works out really fabulously.

Billie began to ask the audience if they could play “Jesus of Suburbia” and was about to settle on a guy with a sign when the guy said two words he never should have uttered, “What song?” Billie looked at him said, “What song? What did I just say, dumbass?” and moved on to a girl with a sign standing next to him. What happened next was magical, and it was a good thing a professional bootlegger… uh… caught it on tape.

Stephanie debuts with Green Day, Madison Square Garden, July 27, 2009

“I fucking love you!”*

Stephanie, from the GDC, is pretty ecstatic, as you may well believe. She got a mention in the Arts Blog of the New York Times, a bunch of other blogs, and most importantly, Larry Livermore mentioned her on his blog. You go, girl!

Tonight’s show held a beautiful “Drama Queen” (my first time hearing it live), and a soulful “Last Night on Earth.”

I think the saddest part… and mind you, I had a super time… was not being in the pit and missing the chance to meet Adrienne Armstrong. Apparently she was asking folks in the pit to help with the natural resources project that the band is involved with, the Natural Resources Defense Council or NRDC. You know, some nature crackpots that keep talking about saving the planet or something like that. Good people. It would have been nice to say hello.

Nonetheless, I still had one more show to go. The second night of two shows is always better.*

With the unpredictable British weather and high-ticket prices, it comes as no surprise that the Brit

With the unpredictable British weather and high-ticket prices, it comes as no surprise that the Brits have caught onto the idea of coming to Spanish music festivals, or that Spanish promoters have started marketing directly to the UK. You can certainly see the attraction of a festival by the sea to British festival-goers who are still airing out their tent after last years Glastonbury. OK, so Primavera Sound or Sonar may not have the same charm or mythical status as Glasto and the food and toilets are no better, but you don’t get much mud on concrete and here you’re almost guaranteed good weather. This British invasion however, doesn’t necessarily sit well with the locals.

Jostling for position down the front for a festival last summer, I learnt a surprising fact. Catalans don’t jostle. At gigs, they find a spot and stay there. Should you endeavour to squeeze in front of them, they’ll look at you like a horrified six year old who’s just had his first bike nicked by the big kid at school. Time and again over that weekend, I realised that the only people pushing to the front were Brits. Each time they did, local fans threw their hands up in outrage and pulled a face like someone had just been sick on their shoes. We seemed…rude.

What was going on? As a Brit who’s lived here for four years, I know our reputation. I know it’s not good. We’re obnoxious, only English-speaking, drunken, badly-dressed, sunburnt egoists who go for dinner at 6pm; but we’re polite. Aren’t we? We say please. We say thank you. We leave decent tips in restaurants. And yet there we were, taking no prisoners in a bid to get down the front. Have I been out of the country for too long? Have all those collective years of alcopops abuse rotted our brains and destroyed one of our saving graces? We’re British. We make excellent music and television, we pay our taxes and we have impeccable manners. Don’t we?

But I got to thinking. Maybe it’s not a question of manners. Maybe it’s a question of expectations. I remember one of my first concerts. It was New Model Army at Rock City in Nottingham, a band whose fans include punks, goths and clog-wearing vegans. I was only 14 and naively thought how cool it was that my friend and me had snagged a place right at the front. Then the band came on. I nearly got clogged to death and my friend lost a shoe. Bucks Fizz at Skegness Embassy Centre when I was 8 had not prepared me for that. A year later at Milton Keynes Bowl, I got the festival experience in full Technicolor. The weight of responsibility my brother must have felt, charged with looking after his little sister, must have been huge. Down the front there were legs and arms everywhere, fights broke out, men pissed where they stood so as not to lose their hard-fought for spot, all of a sudden you’d get a foot in your face as yet another sweaty body crowd-surfed to the front and bottles flew (not all of them full of beer..). It was brutal. It was carnage. It was brilliant.

Going down the front at a gig is a rite of passage and there’s nothing quite like the first time. Queuing up for hours to be first in the venue. The smell of the crowd. The anticipation. The moment the band first steps out onto the stage. It’s magical. At a rock gig, if you’re down the front and you don’t get your teeth knocked out, drink knocked over or covered in beer and bodily fluids, it just isn’t a good show. It’s that simple.

Live music is big business in the UK. Gig-goers are generally experienced and know their place. If you’re a die-hard fan, hard, new to the game or very young, you’ll be down the front. If you’re a techie, you’ll be standing next to the sound-desk because you know that’s where the best sound will be. If you’re getting on a bit, only quite like the band or are wearing something you don’t want to get stained, you’ll be standing at the side. If you’re exceptionally tall you’ll be standing in front of me and if you’re just there because your mate bought you a ticket, you’ll be in the bar.

At the festival, those pushy Brits looked just as surprised to be challenged as their Catalan peers did to be pushed in front of. They wore expressions that said, ‘what’s your problem? This is a gig’. Maybe we are rude, but maybe, just maybe, we’re simply more rock and roll than they are. When a friend of mine saw The Horrors at Razzmatazz, she got knocked to the floor when the singer flung himself off the front of the stage. Brilliant! That’s what happens at gigs and we should love them for that. Rock and roll is supposed to be slightly dangerous. It’s not just about the music, it’s about the experience too. It’s about being part of the crowd. You shouldn’t expect to be able to lay out a picnic and have reserved seats.

So, I’m terribly sorry to ask, but if you don’t mind, I’ll see you next year down the front?

Rapper Coolio was injured during a concert in Stoke-on-Trent last Wednesday, after attempting to do a stage dive into the audience.

The 90s rap superstar was performing at Staffordshire University’s Students’ Union last Wednesday night, when he decided to jumped into the crowd.

The bad mind (lol) audience parted, sending Coolio crashing to the floor. The students them reportedly mobbed the rapper, stealing his bandana, jewellery and shoes before the star was rescued by the venue’s security team.

…………………………………………………………..

Didn’t stage diving die out in the mid 90s?

Anyway I don’t know which is sadder. Coolio crashing to the floor after attempting to stage dive in to the audience at his time of life, or him being reduced to performing at Staffordshire University’s Students’ Union in Stoke On Trent.

Totaly SPELLBOUND!

in quick news – looking through the Puscifer website i noticed that there are 7″ singles

in quick news – looking through the Puscifer website i noticed that there are 7″ singles coming out for DoZo and Queen B, both featuring reimxes by Lustmord

also, Aaron Turner of Isis reports that he recently turned a remix of Trekka into Maynard for some future EP.

————————

and now for some personal thoughts…
now maybe it’s because i’ve been in college for too long now, or maybe it’s been my desire to establish some sort of culture identicifcaion for myself that moves beyond the color of my skin, but mosh pits are something i’ve started to analyze a lot in the past year or so…maybe more

my friends and i were all sitting around one night drinking copious amounts of wine when i posed the question – does anyone have any idea what compelled us all right around the end of 8th grade to need to go to shows and throw ourselves into pits? i mean, i know i love it, but honestly, what the hell compelled us to do that?

jamie, ethertrace, delivered my favorite answer. though i don’t remember his exact words, the idea was that we all started to realize that there was something wrong with the world and the way things had been taught to us. that something was seriously fucked up even if we didn’t know exactly what it was.

now, i’m a heavy body modification enthusiast. with this comes a lot of interest in body ritual, such as suspension, play piercing, and many other things. i remember being a young child and learning about suspensions that native american tribes participated in, such as the O-Kee-Pa Suspension. i also remember thinking how happy i was because i wasn’t part of a culture that had such painful rites of passage and wondering what would possess someone to do such a thing.

…i like to examine my own culture and life as if it was being examined by people in the future, putting it back together. or just by cultures that are completely different than ours, and quite possibly completely ignorant of ours. i like to think that people might one day view the mosh pits all of my friends and i creat as our reaction to the muzik of our culture similar to dances other cultures have done to bring rain or good weather for this years crops. they are dance of hope. the dances we do i feel are of hope, as well as purging our anger and hate. it’s our way of creating a space where pain and violence (to some extent) are acceptable for at least a moment because that space doesn’t exist any open public sphere of our society today. i think the violence is needed in someway because in our culture violence is so fetishized and we are completely removed from it by law.

my fascination with pits continues with the history of pits, and how different styles of music, as well as different geographical locations have developed different styles of pitting. though pits are often pure chaos, anyone who denies that there is an extreme amount of order to them needs to reexamine what they think a pit is. circle pits always have the group of enforcers hanging around the edge to protect the rest of the crowd from the chaos. when someone crowd surfs there are always people holding them up and pushing them around. when someone stages dives the crowd knows to catch them. when someone falls down everyone knows to pick them up. and when the crowd starts to part down the middle, everyone but those into real pain know to get the hell out of the way of the wall of death.

i think i’ll end here before i ramble on too much, but here are some videos

And then there was silence”. Só podia ser sacanagem divina.

Dream Theater

Heaven and Hell

Talvez fosse melhor visitar o San Siro…

Tigertailz

Dada a irrelevância do grupo, reproduzimos aqui fielmente um diálogo entre duas pessoas durante o show.
- Que banda é essa?
- Tigertailz!
- Tiger o quê?
- Tailz.
- Nossa!

White Lion

Thin Lizzy

Feelgood”. Haja refrãos manjados do nível de “Same Ol’ Situation” e “Don’t Go Away Mad”.

Apenas ao final do show, com clássicos do porte de “Sweet Emotion”, “Draw the Line” e “Walk this Way”, a performance parecia entrar num ritmo alucinante.

No Brasil, o Asia tem apenas duas músicas “conhecidas”, “Heat of the Moment” e “Only Time Will Tell”, e isso explica as menos de mil pessoas no esvaziado e gélido Credicard Hall.

Decepcionante. Para ouvir piada, ia no show do Ari Toledo.

Acabou a graça desses alemães.(MH)

After Forever

(JZ)

Visão geral

A Arena Skol é horrorosa. (JZ)
