“Sindoor” (1947) was produced by Filmistan studio. Kishore Sahu was its director. He himself was the hero of this movie. This movie had Kishore Sahu, Paro, Shamim, Gulab, Rajendra, Mehmood, Pratima Devi, Sushil Sahu etc in it.

Most names in the above list ring no bells. I can only guess that Sushir Sahu was the brother of Kishore Sahu. THe Mehmood in the credit may or may not be the person who became a leading comedian in 1950s.

I have discussed two songs from this movie in the past. Here is a light hearted song from this movie. Only the audio is available, but I can guess that this song is a stage performance where Paro and Sushir Sahu enact the roles of Husband and wife. In this song, Paro asks Sushil sahu and get a silk salwar stitched for her. The requirements of the women of those days was quite basic, I would think. Just the other day we discussed a song where a woman was asking her tailor to stitch a choli for her (Meri choli ko seena sambhaal ke (Chakradhaari) ) and here we find a lady asking her husband to get a silk salwaar stitched for her.

Seeing that both Paro and Sushir Kumar figure in the starcast, one can safely assume that the song is picturised on them as well. The fun lyrics are written by someone called <del datetime="2011-08-28T02:22:10+00:00">Ambikesh</del> Abhishek <del datetime="2011-08-28T02:22:10+00:00">Kuntal</del> Kulwant. It is a new name for me.
PS-All sites on internet (who copy from each other) mention the name of the lyricist as Ambikesh Kuntal, but own own walikng encyclopeadia Mr Arunkumar Deshmukh has information about this lyricist which is not available anywher else. He informs us that the lyricist was called Abhishek Kulwant and not Ambikesh Kuntal and that he has written lyrics for a few other movies too, viz. He has written lyrics for some other movies too, like Jaishankar-51,Shararat-44,Veer Kunal-45,Matrubhoomi-48 etc.

Khemchand Prakash is the music director.

There are a few milestones in this blog that I eagerly look forward to. One of them is the obvious milestone of century songs. Every song that marks the completion of a century is a special song for this blog and we celebrate it by discussing a special song on that occasion. There have been 44 such occasions for this blog.

Then there are the occasions when individual artists complete their own centuries of songs. Getting the artists to reach their centuries is easy if they are as prolific as Lata or Rafi, but that is not the case for all artists. I consciously try and discuss songs of those artists who are short of their individual centuries so that they may be able to reach the coveted three figure mark.

One hundred or more songs of a artist in this blog is an indication that the concerned artist had a long and fruitful innings in Hindi movies and that he made significant contributions in enriching his chosen field of activity. I am very happy and proud of the fact that as many as 45 individual centuries have been notched up in this blog. It included 18 music directors, 14 singers and 13 lyricists. The fact that so many of their songs figure in this blog is an affirmation of the fact that all these artists have been the major contributors in enriching the Hindi movie music world during its golden era and in some cases, even before that era.

There are still some artists whose representation in this blog has yet to reach three figure marks and it is my font hope to see them reach the figure as soon as possible. And every time an artist reaches the mark, it is a time for pure joy as far as I am concerned.

And it gives me great joy to announce that Kavi Pradeep also joins the list of centurions with this post. All those who have heard songs penned by Pradeep will agree that he has been a major pillar of Hindi movie music. His contributions in fact go far beyond writing songs for Hindi movies. His influence has extended far beyond.

Kavi Pradeep, whose actual name was Ramchandra Baryanji Dwivedi, was born on 6th february 1915 and he began writing lyrics for Hindi movie songs in late1930s, when he was barely in his twenties. His first movie as a lyricist was “Kangan” (1939). He wrote four songs in it and he sang three of them himself. which was followed by “Bandhan” (1940). If the songs of “Kangan” (1939) were popular, then the songs of “Bandhan” (1940) became all time classics. The song “Chal Chal Re naujawan” from this song became a war cry for freedom fighters who were fighting British rule in India. This movie also had the timeless classic song for chana zor garam vendors called Chane jor garam babu . This song became so popular among roadside chana zor vendors that they would sing this song while vending their wares for decades. I have personally heard this song being sung by roadside vendors in 1970s ! And this song inspires a few more Chana Zor garam songs in Hindi movies in later decades.

In the 1940s, Pradeep figured as lyricist in movies that made history in more ways than one. “Kismat” (1943), which was the biggest hit movie of all times till then (and whose record was broker only in 1975 by Sholay ) had some timeless classic songs in it. One of these songs was a patriotic song called Door hato ae duniya waalon Hindustan hamaara hai (Kismat) . This song was purportedly meant to be a song addressed at Japanese who were at war with Britain and other allied forces, and the British controlled censors also bought this fact. But as this song became well known, no one was left in any doubt that this song was actually meant to rally Indians against their British rulers. The Briotish government sprng into action and the censor board top official was removed, and action was initiated to get this song banned. An arrest warrant was issued against Pradeep, who went underground. But the public mood was so much swayed by this song that the British had no option but to climb down from their hard line. The song stayed un banned and the arrest warrant against Pradeep was also quitely withdrawn.

After independence, Pradeep wrote songs on relevant themes like aftermath of partition, nation building, patriotic songs, songs on social evils etc. And his lyrics, in all these songs, hit home with the audience. Who can forget songs like Dekh tere sansaar ki haalat.. Kitna badal gaya insaan(Nastik)(1954), Aao bachchon tumhe dikhaayen jhanki Hindustan ki(Jaagriti)(1954), De di hamen aazaadi bina khadg bina dhaal(Jaagriti)(1954), Ham laaye hain toofaan se kishti nikaal ke (Jaagriti) and the non movie patriotic song par excellence Ae mere watan ke logon zaraa aankh mein bhar lo paani

Pradeep also sang songs, and these songs had a pied piper like effect on the listeners. In fact, his voice holds that magical sway over the listeners even today.

It is wrong to assume that Pradeep was only into writing songs on serious issues of national importance. He has also written songs in religious movies, romantic movies, fun movies etc. And his lyrics are just as impressive in these songs as they are in case of his serious songs.

Kavi Pradeep was active in Hindi movies from late 1930s till early 1970s. If his first few movies made waves, then his last few movies, coming at the fag end of his career, were no less impressive. Take the songs of “Sambandh” (1969) for example. This movie had O P Nayyar as the music director, and he himself was towards the end of his career and he was finding himself with very few friends in the industry.O P Nayyar and Kavi Pradeep were working together for the first time in their careers. And this movie saw O P Nayyar working with singers whom he did not regard high vis a vis his usual singers. This movie had singers like Mukesh, Hemant Kumar and Mahendra Kapoor.

Despite all this, the songs of this movie turned out to be great hits with music lovers. Who can forget songs like andhere mein jo baithhe hain , Apni maata ke dulaare bachche and last but not the least Chal akela chal akela chal akela tera mela chhoota raahi chal akela !

Enough of serious stuff. I have mentioned that Kavi Pradeep could write light hearted stuff with equal ease. Here is just the song to illustrate this fact. This song is from “Jhoola” (1941), which to my mind was a path breaking movie, which continued to inspire movie makers for decades. In fact, this movie was certainly the inspiration for ‘Padosan” (1968). You do not believe me ? You will believe me, when I tell you that the first few lines of the padosan song Ek chatur naar(Padosan)(1968) were taken from the comedy song Ek chatur naar karkar singaar (Jhoola) , which was sung by Ashok Kumar and it was picturised on Ashok Kumar as well.

Mehmood (Producer of Padosan) and Kishore Kumar (singer of Padosan songs) were well aware of “Jhoola” (1942) seeing that Ashok Kumar (Kishore Kumar’s brother and Mehmood’s father (Mumtaz Ali) had acted in “Jhoola” (1942).

This great fun song is in fact picturised on Mumtaz Ali and a lady as a stage song. This lady, who plays his partner in his stageshows is someone I am unable to identify. I request our knowledgeable readers to help identify her. She in fact is visible in another song of this movie namely Aaj mausam salona salona re (Jhoola).

This great song, which remains popular to this day, is sung by Arun Kumar and Rehmat Bano. Saraswati Devi is the music director.

So here is this 100th song of Kavi Pradeep as a lyricist. And I am happy to see Kavi Pradeep become the 46th artist and 14th lyricist to reach his century of songs in this blog.

There have been at least two movies called “Khaandaan”. One of them was released in 1965 and it had Sunil Dutt and Nutan in lead roles. But there was another movie of the same name that was released as far back as 1942.

This 1942 movie was directed by Shaukat Hussain Rizvi. This movie had actors like Noor Jehan, Pran, Ghulam Mohammed, Manorama, M. Ajmal and others in it. It was in this movie that Noorjahaan acted as the heroine for the first time in her career.

“Khandaan” (1942) was a musical blockbuster and its music had enthralled the music lovers of those days.

Here is a song from this movie. This song is a stage song, where a few ladies, holding earthen pot (matka) on their heads, sing about going to the local panghat (water hole) to fill up water. The ladies are dressed up like they are going to a party, and not to a panghat, but then that is how it is in Hindi movies and now adays in Indian TV soap operas too, where they are shown dressed up in their jewellery even when they are sleeping.

The song is sung by Shamshad Begam and Naseem Akhtar. D N Madok is the lyricist. Music is composed by Ghulam Haider. Ghulam Haider in fact came to limelight as a music director with this movie.

And who is the leading lady in the picturisation, who is seen lip syncing in Shamshad Begam’s voice ? Take a closer look. The lady, who looks like Poonam Dhillon (albeit four decades earlier) is none other than Manorama, who later on became well known for playing scheming aunt / brothel owner etc. She was pretty in her younger days, and how quickly she lost her good looks. Of course that is another matter altogether.

Here is this forgotten gem from “Khandaan” (1942). Listening to this song and watching the picturisation is like going back in time and watch our past as it was seven decades ago. What a nice and wonderful song !

Here is a duet from this movie, which is sung by the most prolific duet singing duo among playback singers, viz Rafi and Lata. This song qualifies to be called a duet because Rafi sings the first few lines of this song. After that, it is entirely a Lata song.

The picturisation shows Waheeda Rehman, who plays a successful dancer, performing a dance on this song in a packed hall. Her partner, who lip syns the first few lines of the song is Chandrashekhar.

I became aware of this wonderful song only just now, when I received the lyrics of this song from nahm. This is a fantastic song to listen to as well as watch.

Majrooh Sultanpuri is the lyricist and the lilting music is composed by S D Burman. In fact, one can notice the influence of R D Burman too in this song in the later part of the song.

Mehmood had given R D Burman his first break as an independent music director in “Chhote Nawaab” (1962). Ironically, R D Burman was unable to get any other assignment as an independent music director after that. He continued to work as an assistant to his father. Others may not have cared to look at R D Burman, but Mehmood once again reposed his faith on R D Burman as the music director for his movie called “Bhoot Bangla” (1965). Not just that, he gave R D Burman an important acting role too in this movie !
I have discussed a couple of songs from this movie and that includes the then radically new kind of a song, viz Aao twist karen jaag uthaa mausam .

This movie in fact may have acted as the trigger to launch R D Burman into the big league. Soon thereafter, R D Burman managed to land the assignment of Shammi Kapoor’s “Teesri Manzil” (1966) instead of the usual Shankar Jaikishan, and the rest, as the chiche goes, was history.

Here is a song from “Bhhoot Bangla” (1965). It is a stage song which is sung by Lata and it is picturised on Tanuja. She is a participant in a cultural competition, and the competion is being competeed by Ammen Sayani. Yes, Ammen Sayani , the famous radio presenter of Binaca geetmala played this role in this movie.

This song is written by Hasrat Jaipuri.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Prakashchandra.

I have mentioned this fact about Hindi movie songs that most of them are about human feelings viz lo

I have mentioned this fact about Hindi movie songs that most of them are about human feelings viz love, sadness, happiness and not about commerce/business. In fact there are very few songs that are about selling some products. I have discussed a few songs where chanajor or similar stuff is being sold. In one such write up, readers came up with the list of a few other songs where some item was being sold.

Just now, I have come across a forgotten song where flower is being sold. two lady flower vendors are waiting for a customer. One customer finally appears and both flower vendors welcome him and begin to dance with him while singing about their flowers.

Now, when one goes to buy items in normal shops, one is lucky to get a salesperson to pay attention to you, let alone start singing and dancing with you. But it is a good idea no doubt. I hope big shopping malls will arrange for salesgirls who would sing and dance with their customers. I am sure this innovative marketing idea will attract customers. While doing that, do not fail to credit me for the idea.

The two lady flower sellers try the buyer to buy from her, and they begin to fight among themselves. The buyer, seeing the two busy in fighting eac other, silenly decamps with the flowers of both of them.

This nice light hearted song is picturised as a stage song, with the stage set like a wild west location and the buyer dressed in a cowboy hat. It is just that he comes not in a horse, but in a donkey. And the music has a nice western music feel about it.

This lovely song is sung by Shamshad Begam, Zohrabai Ambalewaali and Rafi. Shakeel Badayuni is the lyricist and music is composed by Naushad.

I am unable to identify the actors on whom this song is picturised. I request our knowledgeable readers to help identify them.

I discovered this song just now and listened to this many a times in order to get its lyrics right. It is a great fun son and one that deserves to be much better known among music lovers. It is a forgotten gem for sure.

When a cricketer hits a fast paced century (in any form of the game), that is stuff for headlines. Newspapers will carry that item on front page. (Btw fastest century record is held by Shahid Afridi, scoring an ODI century in 37 balls; for test cricket Vivian Richards with a century in 56 balls.)

We have stuff for a similar headline news on this blog. We have a new record for the fastest century of songs. Welcome to the 4200th offering of what is increasingly becoming a misnomer, Song-A-Day blog. With an average of over 7 songs posted per day, the musical journey from 4101 to 4200 has been covered in 14 days flat. This beats the previous record of 16 days. Congratulations ALL.
For this milestone song, I am today writing about Sajjan, the well known character actor in Hindi cinema, who has spent a better part of 6 decades performing on the silver screen. And a special on screen performance of a solo song, done superbly.

The name Sajjan evokes images in the mind of the supporting actor who has played many a positive and negative roles on the Hindi film screen. He started out in films as a contemporary of Prithvi Raj Kapoor in the 1940s, and one can trace his filmography right up to 1996. In a career that spans almost six decades, one remembers him from many movies, although almost always playing unobtrusive roles. In his earlier years, he played the lead character in some movies, but then quickly transitioned into supporting and character roles. He never allowed himself to become a stereotype, and played a mix of positive, negative, young, aged, sad, comic, villain, all kinds of roles in the screen. And that, I believe is due to the consummate actor in him. I have seen him play act on stage, a rare and a truly unique theatrical performance. (I will come to that.)

Sajjan is first and foremost a theatre artist, and that is where he started before coming to films. He is a contemporary of Prithvi Raj Kapoor, and was associated with him as an assistant director in the Prithvi Theaters. If one watches his performance closely in the character roles in cinema, one can get a glimpse of the acting genius in him. The performance that I refer to, took place in 1998 at the India International Center in Delhi, and I must say I have been most fortunate to be present on the occasion. It was not a play or a performance, but a book release function. A book that had been in the making for 30 years. The title of the book is Rasa Bhaava Darshan, and it is a compilation of 200 plus black and white photo graphs in which Sajjan has presented the eight Rasa’s and 49 Bhaava’s, based purely on facial expressions. It is truly a remarkable book, and a remarkable achievement. Sajjan, working with the famous photographer, Mr OP Sharma, spent almost three decades to research each element of the rasa’s and bhaava’s, enact it, capture still black and white photos, then review them and do re takes, till each rasa and each bhaava is perfectly presented.

This remarkable book is based on the ancient Indian text, ‘Naatya Shaastra’, by Bharat Muni. In this text, Bharat Muni has described each of the rasa and bhaav in great detail. Sajjan spent a lots of time researching each rasa and bhaav. He referred many other texts, and visited many ancient temples in India and Nepal, to study the various statues related to the rasa’s and bhaav’s, to get a deeper understanding for depicting them to perfection. The book, published by Clarion Books, is a very prized possession, and the original hardcover edition is now selling for a premium of a few thousand rupees.

The bonus item of the evening was the actual on stage rendition of the rasa’s and bhaava’s by Sajjan. I have no words to describe the superlative experience. Sajjan used just the first four letters of the English alphabet, ‘ABCD’. He spoke them out, just these four letter, repeatedly, but differently, for each of the eight rasa’s and each of the forty nine bhava’s depicted in the book. He was an old man by that time. He had a white scarf covering his head, and a well trimmed white beard. He was wearing a loose fitting white kaftaan and looked every inch like a sufi saint. The performance lasted barely half an hour or thereabout, but oh what an experience it was.

This song from the 1966 film Tasweer, is once again one of those prized remembrances from my early years, and I had no other information about it, having just heard it on the radio. I have the audio of this song, but was searching for the video clip, not knowing what to look for. I finally discovered it last week on YouTube, recently posted. That is time I found out about the movie, Tasweer, and then searching on the web, also found a detailed description of the movie on Memsaab’s blog. (Please see Review of Tasweer-1966 at Memsaab’s blog).

The song is actually a very simple poem, a nazm, that is simply presented without too much of instrumental accompaniment. The bearded person in blue shirt who is rendering this poem on screen is Sajjan. The situation is a party, with a lot of guests for whom Sajjan is performing. Other folks one can identify in the clip are Feroze Khan, and Raj Mehra. In the movie, Sajjan and Feroze Khan are childhood friends, who, unknown to each other thus far in the movie, desire the same lady, Kalpana. At the end of the clip, one sees Kalpana join the gathering, accompanied by Indira Bansal (one her left), and another lady on her right that I cannot identify.

The lyrics are by DN Madhok, and the composition is set by C Ramchandra. The poem is so softly sung by Mahendra Kapoor. The beauty of this scene is the presentation of the poem by Sajjan. In a very theatrical manner, he is interpreting and presenting each and every line of the poem. The manner in which he uses his cap to represent the moon and its phases, is just superb. I was truly amazed on seeing this performance, and that is when I remembered his on stage performance at the book launch ceremony.

It is such a treat to watch. Enjoy this unique performance by Sajjan.

Here is an absolute gem of a song that has been lying hidden all these decades.

This song is from “Nayi Kahaani” (1943). I am not only surprised that music lovers have forgotten this song, I am even more surprised at the fact that the print of this movie is still available and that too in a reasonably pristine condition, going by the print quality of this picturisation. So kudos to the people who have preserved the print of this movie in such a good condition.

The picturisation shows a gathering of people seated in a hall and Jairaj singing this song. This song is obviouslty addressed to Rose sitting in the front row and looking pretty. Little is known about her. I guess that she was an Anglo Indian lady who acted in Hindi movies. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw more light on her as well as on this movie.

The song is sung by G M Durrani. after two stanzas of the song, we are treated to a delightful sargam by a young performer called Balak Ram whose mamapadhanisa… is sung at such rapidfire speed that I have been unable to get them properly. I request our readers with keener ears to help us with the proper words uttered by Balak Ram.The young kid certainly steals the show before once again allowing G M Durrani and Jairaj to resume.

This movie may not be remembered much today, but what lovely songs this movie had! I am surprised to find that I have so far discussed only two songs from this movie. I thought I had discussed more songs from this movie.

Here is a lovely song from this movie. This song is sung by Rafi and it is picturised as a stage song on Manoj Kumar. Kaifi Azmi is the lyricist. Babul is the music director.

What a superb song it is ! The musical team of Babul,Kaifi Azmi and Rafi deserve kudos for this gem of a song. And I thank nahm for sending me the lyrics of this song.

Here is a lovely song from “Jhanak Jhanak Paayal Baaje” (1955) where the above mentioned ingredients are in place. This is a stage cum dance song, where Sandhya performs. The song is sung by Lata. Hasrat Jaipuri is the lyricist and Vasant Desai is the music director. And the result of all this heady concoction of quality ingredients is an unforgettable musical feast for the senses.

As far as I know, Sasural (1962) was a pretty big hit. Produced by Prasad Productions and directed by LV Prasad, it starred Rajendra Kumar and B Saroja Devi.

I have known many of the songs of this film from my childhood days. While the most famous song of the film is without doubt “teri pyari pyari soorat ko”, it has other fairly popular songs like “kya mil gaya, kya kho gaya”, “ek sawaal main karoon” and two popular Mukesh numbers “apni ulfat pe zamaane ka na pehra hota” and “jaana tumhaare pyar mein”.

For years I’ve been wanting to see this movie but somehow it never happened. And then, a couple of years ago, I got to see Beti Bete (1964). What’s the connection? The lead actress, Saroja Devi.

I fell totally in love with her after seeing that movie. And after that it was only a matter of time. I just HAD to see Sasural and I managed to see it soon after. I liked the film, it had a reasonable storyline but the highlight to me, apart from the lovely songs of course, was still Saroja Devi. She looked absolutely stunning in the movie, even better than she looked in Beti Bete. Ok, so her acting had touches of South Indian OTT in it but she still carried it off gracefully and I’ve seen far worse acting.

I read up on Saroja Devi later and found that she has won the Padmi Shri and the Padma Bhushan. Am happy for her – I, for sure, am a fan. She was a well-known South Indian name in the industry when I was a little boy (actually she was before my time) but I’d never got to see a film of hers till I saw Beti Bete. Anyway, better late than never. And now I need to make sure I see other movies of hers too. She has not acted in many Hindi movies but I wouldn’t mind seeing a regional language movie (that I may not even understand) as long as she is in it. Such is the impression she has made on me.

Naturally I want you to be able to see for yourself what Saroja Devi is all about. So here’s a song from Sasural “ek sawaal main karoon”. It is a college quiz competition between Rajendra Kumar and Saroja Devi. They are supposed to ask each other a question but the answer is also required to be in question form. They manage three rounds of this but Saroja Devi stumbles on the fourth one and is unable to answer it. So Rajendra Kumar ends up winning the competition. (That’s something that I am, of course, not happy about. If I’d been the writer, there’s no way my beautiful Saroja Devi would have lost to Rajendra Kumar) .

Anyway the song itself is quite creative and a lot of fun. It is written by Shailendra and composed by Shankar Jaikishen.

I hope you enjoy it too. It is lovely to listen to – although if you just lose yourself, staring at Saroja Devi’s face and looking into those eyes, you wouldn’t be the first person to do so.

When India became independent in 1947, the nationalistic fervour among the newly independant Indians

When India became independent in 1947, the nationalistic fervour among the newly independant Indians was naturally at its peak. People wanted to forge their own identity and one of the battle cries that was frequently heard those days was to give up wearing Western clothings and wear native clothings. Dressing up western style, applying make up etc was regarded as western and was mocked.

Hindi movies too reflected this fact in a few of their songs created those year. I have already discussed the iconic song Aana meri jaan meri jaan sunday ke sunday (Shehnaayi)(1947) in this blog.

Here is another song of the same genre. This song, and for that matter, the entire movie was on the topic of nation building, which was a hot topic for the Indian leaders as well as movie makers those days.

Here is this song, which is a stage song, where peope are exhorted to be Indians and behave like Indians (read dress and behave like native Indians instead of apeing the goras).

This song is picturised on Suraiyya and others, with the audience consisting of Madan Puri etc. There are several singers in this song. Suraiyya is obviously the main singer, but there is one more female singer, which sounds like Meena Kapoor to me. There is a male singer too, but I am unable to identify that voice. I request my knowledgeable readers to help identify him.

Prem Dhawan is the lyricist. Though Anil Biswas was the music director of other songs of this movie, Shyam Babu Pathak is credited as the music director of this song. I have no information about the circumstances that led to there being two music directors in this movie. I request my knowledgeable readers to throw light on this matter.

This post is written by Raja, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie songs and a regular contributor of write ups to this blog

In many of my posts I have talked about Rafi saab. And that is because I just love his voice. It goes straight to my heart. Apparently, from all accounts, he was also a simple, generous human being – and this only adds to the reason why I have extremely high regard for him.

Having said that, my respect for Rafi saab is certainly not at the cost of my respect or admiration for other singers. I have a lot of respect for all those singers who have given us all those timeless treasures that we enjoy on a daily basis. I would never pull down a particular singer in trying to prop up another singer. They have all given us many lovely songs and we should be thankful to them for that.

One of the singers I am very fond of is Kishore Kumar. Now he was THE biggest name when I was growing up in the early 70s – he dominated that decade like a colossus. Till his death, he reigned supreme. There are a lot of Kishore songs I absolutely love. Whether fast, fun songs or sad songs, Kishore had his own appeal and unique style.

Kishore was supposed to be a total masti person, as many who worked with him in the industry have said. Lata Mangeshkar often said that Kishore was always playing some prank or the other all the time.

Kishore is easily one of the most talented all-rounder performers in the Hindi film industry, if not THE most talented one. He could not just sing, he could compose, act, he even produced/directed movies.

I love Kishore as an actor too. He was a laugh riot and his movies were usually zany comedies. Over the last few days, I’ve seen a couple of them – Naughty Boy (1962) and Baap re Baap (1955). Total timepass movies with lovely songs too. I especially liked Naughty Boy, it was really cute and the chemistry between Kishore and Kalpana is lovely.

Anyway coming to the song here, it is from a Kishore movie that I’ve not seen yet but hope to see sometime. The movie is Rangoli, starring Kishore and Vyjanthimala. This movie has a fair number of well-known songs and this song is also quite well-known.

I like this song a lot, it is vibrant and very hummable – and that is something you can actually say for most Kishore songs of the 50s and 60s. Just a delight to listen to.

I hope you enjoy this song too.

Song-Ek nazar kisi ne dekhaa aur dil huaa deewaanaa (Rangoli) (1961) Singer-Kishore Kumar, Lata, Lyrics-Hasrat Jaipuri, MD-Shankar Jaikishan

Lyrics

Ek nazar kisi ne dekha aur dil hua deewaana
hai baat bas itni si, aur ban gaya afsaana
ek nazar kisi ne dekha aur dil hua deewaana
hai baat bas itni si, aur ban gaya afsaana

chori chori bagiya mein aayi jo bahaar
kaliyon ki ankhiyon se chhalka khumaar
chori chori bagiya mein aayi jo bahaar
kaliyon ki ankhiyon se chhalka khumaar
chhup chhup kisi se nazar huyi chaar
koi dil jeet gaya koi gaya haar
man mere jhoom, taaron ko choom
aaya tera zamaana
ek nazar kisi ne dekha aur dil hua deewaana
hai baat bas itni si, aur ban gaya afsaana

baaje mora bichhua to mat chaloon chaal
dhak dhak dil mera deta jaaye taal
baaje mora bichhua to mat chaloon chaal
dhak dhak dil mera deta jaaye taal
udey hai chunar jaise shaayar ka khayaal
jaane kaisa jaadu leke aaya hai ye saal
aankhen churaaun, chhup chhup ke gaaun
main ek naya taraana
ek nazar kisi ne dekha aur dil hua deewaana
hai baat bas itni si, aur ban gaya afsaana

nayi nayi duniya hai main hoon anjaan
abhi abhi kisi se huyi hai pehchaan
nayi nayi duniya hai main hoon anjaan
abhi abhi kisi se huyi hai pehchaan
soch soch haar gayaa main hoon hairaan
tumhen kis naam se pukaaroon mehmaan
sapna kahoon, ki apna kahoon
ki rangeen ek fasaana
ek nazar kisi ne dekha aur dil hua deewaana
hai baat bas itni si, aur ban gaya afsaana
ek nazar kisi ne dekha aur dil huaa deewaana
hai baat bas itni si, aur ban gaya afsaana

This song is a stage song which is performed to a full house by several performers. I can identify Kishore Kumar and Mala Sinha. There are others too, and I request my knowledgeable readers to help identify them.

The song is sung by Kishore Kumar (for himself), Asha Bhonsle (for Mala Sinha), Lata (for an actress unfamilar to me) and Rafi (for an actor wearing Kishore Kumar’s facemask).

This very very long song is written by Majrooh Sultanpuri. Anil Biswas is the music director.

This song from “Munimji” (1955) was a long pending farmaish of the readers. This song is a different kind of song. It is a stage song that describes the wedding of Lord Shiva with Parvati.

The song is sung by Hemant Kumar and chorus and it is performed by several artists on the stage. One can see Nalini Jaiwant and Pran among the spectators of the performance. The actress playing Parvati on stage is also Nalini Jaiwant (I hope my eyes are not deceiving me). I request my knowledgeable readers to throw light on the actors in he picturisation.
PS-The actress playing Parvati is Ameeta. I thank Mr Arunkumar Deshmukh for helping me identify her.

The lyrics are written by Shailendra and music is composed by S D Burman. I do not think most Hindi movie lovers will be able to understand many words because these words are spoken only in Bihar and eastern UP. They are in effect “Bihari” words, though experts like Santosh Ojha will tell us that there is no Bihari language as such.

Most people involved in the creation of this song had no connection with “Bihari” lingo, but they have done a great job in creating this masterpiece. I have tried to get the lyrics as accurately as I can, but there may be errors and I request “Bihari” language experts to point out the errors in the lyrics. One needs to be an expert in the lingo as well as in Bihari weddings to be able to fathom several words of this song.

Of course, one can enjoy this song even without fully understanding the lyrics. So here is this song from “Munimji” (1954) for the enjoyment of the readers of this blog.

Here is a long (over eight minutes long) stage song from “Paayal” (1957). This song is picturised on a group of dancers. I am only familiar with Padmini. I request my knowledgeable readers to help identify others as well.

The song is sung by Lata, Manna Dey and chorus.

Rajinder Krishan is the lyricist and Hemant Kumar composed the music.

Getting the lyrics right took me considerable time. I have not included the portion sung by the chorus in two places mainly because I was unable to get the words right. Nevertheless, I have got the lyrics sung by Lata and Manna Dey right.

Here is this forgotten gem from a forgotten movie called “Paayal” (1957).

“Basant” (1942) is a very important movie in the annals of Hindi movies. In this movie Ulhas and Mumtaz Shanti play stage performers. Naturally this movie has several songs picturised on them. Later on, their daughter (baby Mumtaz, who was none other than Madhubala) also starts performing on stage.

I have in fact already discussed the song picturised on baby Madhubala which is Mere chhote man mein chhoti si duniyaa re (Basant) . I have already discussed two other stage performance songs from this movie.

Here is another song from this movie. Here Mumtaz Shanti performs alone. This song is sung by Parul Ghosh. Lyrics are written by P L Santoshi. Music is composed by Pannalal Ghosh, who was the husband of Parul Ghosh and who later made his mark as a legendary flute exponent. It is widely believed that the actual music director of this movie was Anil Biswas, but for some reason, he cdecided to give the credit of music direction to Pannalal Ghosh, who was hi brother in law. Yes, Parul Ghosh was Anil Biswas’ sister.

She has sung this song superbly. The lyrics by P L Santoshi are wonderful. And despite this song being so old, the audio quality is surprisingly good.

Here is this wonderful song from “Basant” (1942).

Here is a lovely stage song from this movie. The song is sung by Shamshad Begam and G M Durrani. I have no clue about the actors on whom this song is picturised. So I request my knowledgeable readers to fill in the missing information.

The words of the songs are lovely to listen to. The lyricist is someone with a very impressive pen name viz Shatir Ghaznavi. Music is composed by Ghulam Haider.

Here is a stage song from this movie, where Nimmi and others sing and dance on the stage. The song, which was hugely popular ( every song of this movie was hugely popular for that matter) is sung by Lata and chorus. Shakeel Badayuni is the lyricist and music is composed by Naushad.

It is nice to see Nimmi in a happy song for a change.

Here is a stunning song from a forgotten movie.

This song is from “Bambai Raat Ki Baahon Mein” (1968) which was an off beat movie made by K A Abbas with new and unnown actors. The heroine of this movie was one Persis Khambata, who was Miss India 1965 and who was trying her hands in Hindi movie industry. She failed to get a foothold in Hindi movies and she vanished from the scene. A few years later, she re-appeared, not in Hindi movies, but in American TV serials where she played an alien in the TV series Star Trek. For this role, she had to get her head shaved.

In this movie ” Bambai Raat Ki Baahon Mein” (1968), which few people watched, Persis Khambata plays an un conventional role that was perhaps far too advanced for the movie goers who were used to seeing leading ladies in Bhartiya Naari roles.

Now, with the benefit of hindsight, we may well wonder how Persis Khambata failed to make it big in Hindi movie industry. The reason for her failure was that she had appeared in Hindi movies one decade too early. Later, actresses like Zeenat Aman and Parveen Babi succeeded in Hindi movies while playing similar roles.

In “Bambai Raat ki Baahon Mein” (1968), Persis Khambata gets to sing several songs. But this particular song in question is not lip syced by her. Still this song is picturised on her. The picturisation is one again far ahead of the times. Persis Khambata is doing a catwalk here, showing off garments from different parts of India. This was something that was never shown before in a Hindi movies, not that too many people bothered to watch.

An announcer announces that a fashion parade of Indian dresses is going to be presented. Then he starts singing this song. Persis Khambata appears on stage, displaying various garments, accompanied by this song.

The song, plus Persis Khambata’s presence on the stage creates sheer magic. Those who have not seen this song have certainly missed something.

I think this is the best way of catwalk. Let a song like this be played while models sashay onto the stage. A model exhibiting garments with a song like this playing in the background- it cannot get any better tha that. I wonder why this has not been tried. Perhaps it is because people are not awrae of this song.

Make no mistake. The song (written by Hasan Kamaal and sung by Mahendra Kapoor) is a highly sensuous song. Music is composed by J P Kaushik. Unlike Persis Khambata (who made it big in US), J P Kaushik went back to oblivion despite creating some great songs in this movie. Such is life.

I have no idea if chana jor, moongphali etc are still sold today on street by vendors. Personally I have not seen such vendors for the past few decades, so chances are, such vendors are on the verge of extinction, if not already extinct.

When I was a kid, chana jor vendors were as ubiquitous as common sparrow. Common sparows could be seen in front of households in large numbers in those days. Now a days, you are lucky to find a few of them, and for that you need to go to small sleepy towns. They have all but vanished from cities.

For the uninitiated, chana jor was a mixture of chana (gram) and namkeen, which the chana jor vendor used to sell. The vendor was not stationary at one place, rather he was constatntly on the move. His main customers were children. The chana jor vendor had his stuff hanging from one shoulder in a box, and his portable stand held on his head. As he got customers, he would put this stand down, and keep his box on the stand and sell his stuff.

The stuff sold by him was not really very hygienic and many health conscious mothers would forbit their kids to buy stuff from him, but I am not sure if kids paid much heed to this warning.

Since the vendor was always on the move, he needed a means to advertise his presence. The vendors would either call or even sing a song that would have the word chana jor garam in it.

A chana jor garam song was first created in Hindi movies as way back as in 1938 in the movie “Bandhan”. With this chana jor sellers got a song of their own with which to attract their customers. This song(Chane jor garam babu (Bandhan)(1938) ) became the anthem of all chana jor sellers of India. This song was sung by Arun Kumar. It was written by Pradeep and music was by Saraswati Devi.

Two decades later, another fantastic chana jor song was created. and this song is the topic of discussion here. This song is a stage song, sung by Kishore Kumar and Shamshad Begam. This fantastic comedy song is picturised on Kishore Kumar and Meena Kumari.

This song is written by Jaan Nissar Akhtar and its music is composed by O P Nayyar. Listening to this song (and watching the picturisation) will make your day.

This song makes my day too, and for another reason. This song is a landmark song for this blog. It is the 3300th song of this blog. And I am happy to post this
delightful song to mark this occasion.

As always, I thank all my well wishers who have continued to encourage me through various means, viz by their visits, votes, farmaishes, suggestions etc. This century took me 25 days, which is nearly one week more than I would have liked, but then this period was an important festival cum holiday season in India where one has to devote time to one’s family, relatives etc.

With this land mark behind us, we can look forward to discussing many more great songs in the coming days. I request you all to keep showering your blessings and well widshes, because we have many more great songs yet to be discussed. I take this occassion to one again thank you all.
