(Season 5, Episode 3)

Francine, Hayley and Roger spent the entire episode trapped on a plane, alternately because of a military drone plane flying by and Roger switching costumes. Stan was supposed to be with them, but he left to get a Grisham novel, and got tased trying to reboard.

Steve blew his parents’ trust by commandeering a drone via what he thought was a flight simulator. If you follow that logically, you are inevitably led to a dramatic face-off with the Chinese mafia on a parade float where the drone has been turned into a Chinese dragon. Wow, these shows have weird plots.

(Season 5, Episode 2)

Another strong outing from the folks at American Dad, with nary a cutaway in sight. Both storylines worked for me this week, because they spotlighted two of the strongest ensembles on the show.

Roger is almost always hilarious, and he works brilliantly off of Stan’s straight-laced egocentric world view. On the B-side, we had Steve and his friends, who always manage to bring the funny. This week, they went to rather outrageous lengths to get there.

It was another exploration of how much Roger looks up to Stan and how much Stan exploits that for his own personal gain. This week, that personal gain was a helicopter (the pad looked great on the roof of his house).

Stan pulled Roger into his world after accidentally killing the dictator of Isla Island, a small country south of Cuba, in a hilariously bizarre up escalator corndog choking incident. Good luck writing that headline!

From there, we wound up with Roger standing in as the dictator, without even realizing he was doing it at first, and then slowly remaking Isla in his own image. Unfortunately, his image is inconsistent at best and involves things like painting the entire island a single color … and then changing it.

I did like Stan’s horror at the beginning, before Roger realized what was going on, when Roger was suggesting they kill the servants at this resort, only to have it actually done because everyone thought he was their dictator. Wow was that along sentence.

Of course, in the end everyone kissed and made up, so all’s well that ends well, right? Except for Isla Island. Roger’s replacement, while a mean dancer, was the most brutal dictator yet. Oh well, you can’t win them all.

Oh yeah, Steve and his friends? Well, it started with Francine inadvertently hugging Snot to her breasts in a bikini when she thought she was saving him from drowning. This lead to Steve getting his nuts brushed by Snot’s mother and then an inseam measurement attempt. Ultimately, by the time we got to Steve holding Snot’s scrotum through a doorknob hole both the boys (and I) realized this had gone too far. I mean, really. Gross!

This is the first time we’ve had any suede Stan Smiths. This one is the “Vintage” in cardinal red suede.

(Season 5, Episode 1)

I’ve watched a lot of episodes of American Dad this past week, and this was by far the funniest one I’ve seen. Admittedly, I haven’t seen them all, but I was blown away by the fact that they could take one goofy concept and flesh it out into the most ridiculously hilarious sequence of events I’ve seen in a long time

The premise was simple enough. Steve’s been given an opportunity to sing the national anthem, but Stan doesn’t think he’ll be able to give it the emotional impact it deserves. The reason: Steve’s never been to war.

Well, Stan can’t exactly ship him out to Iraq, though he’d  probably consider it if he could, but he can do the next best thing. Re-enactment.

Like Steve, I was thinking Civil War, which is quaint and charming. Instead, these people had turned a country club golf course into Vietnam, re-enacting one of the most brutal wars of the modern era.

Equipped with a red marker, for slitting throats (drawing lines on them), Steve found himself fully immersed in the experience. Just like those Civil War soldiers, these participants were 100% committed to their characters. to the point of fault.

I can’t even go into all the ridiculous things they did to mimic helicopter pick-ups, limbs getting blown off and grenades, but it was comic genius. Pure comic genius.

Even better, when Steve finally got his chance to sing, the fireworks pushed him into post-traumatic stress disorder as if he were a real Vietnam vet. American Dad is off to a great start on their new season.

Dope. For about $85 you can cop your very own pair. I just might…

One of the best occurred many years ago when Arthur Ashe and Stan Smith competed against each other in the final match of the men’s singles championship at the U.S. Open at lily-white Forest Hills Tennis Club. At that time, players were required to wear all-white, also. (Ashe was the only Afro-American in the entire tournament.) They were tied at two sets and 4 games each in the fifth and final set. Smith was serving to hold serve. He lost the game on a highly-controversial call and the court was immediately engulfed by shrill whistling for several minutes by the enraged fans. Finally, play resumed, Ashe held serve and won the match. During the awarding of trophies later, announcer Bud Collins asked Smith about the call. Was it the turning point? “Yeh, probably.” Collins then noted how unpopular the call was. What did Smith think? “Arthur said my shot was out. That’s good enough for me.”

Here’s another. Decades apart, golfers Bob Jones and Tom Kite both called penalties on themselves for violations that no one else saw while playing the final hole of a major tournament. They lost the tournament by one stroke. When each was later asked why he called a penalty on himself for a violation no one else saw, each replied, “I saw it.”

It is also worth noting that in Maine, folks have a unique way of expressing themselves.  Here’s one of my favorites. “Lived here all your life?” “Not yet.” As for commenting on those with dubious credibility: “Won’t say he’s dishonest but if he wants his cows to come home, he’s gotta get someone else to call ‘em.”

What if I was to ask you to name a pair of Adidas that has sold over 30 million pairs to date? Would you say the Superstars? Promodels? Sambas? Kobes?! To which I would reply: “Oh how very wrong you are!”

The answer: Haillet. Wait … Haillet? Originally endorsed by another player (Robert Haillet), this sneaker was introduced as Adidas’ top performance tennis shoe. However, It was renamed in 1971 to what we know it as today …

Enter Stan Smith, American tennis star of the 1960s and 70s. The No. 1 ranked in the 1970s, the winner of countless singles and doubles titles. Adidas approached him to endorse the Haillet, and consequently, renamed it as the Stan Smith.

This is definitely my favourite Adidas sneaker of all time. (Sorry, Superstars, though you’re a classic,  after seeing you on the feet of every boy and girl in middle school, you kind of lost your appeal, like a girl who is too good looking and promiscuous for her own good, or the crushed remains of a bag of Lays after its been passed around). So you ask, what is behind allure and timelessness of these sneakers?

Well, it’s aesthetically pleasing to look at: Clean lines, played down design, a sort of minimalist approach. That’s the style of girls sneakers I like. Instead of the classic three stripes like on the Superstars, you have three perforated lines in its place. It’s also available in a Velcro variety or nubuck if that is your thing. But why mess with a classic?

Creating an offspring of the original Stan Smith, adidas works up a new pack of sneakers entitled the Stan Smith Trefoil Mid, from the adidas Comfort Pack. Both kicks feature a mid/hi cut, packaged with a 3D Trefoil side emblem and ultra light uppers. Two colorways were released, including an Eggplant Purple and Metallic Gold, both of which are now available through Schuh-You.
