Worlds’ Influence THUD. THUD. THUD. That’s the sound of me slamming my head on my desk i

Worlds’ Influence

THUD.

THUD.

THUD.

That’s the sound of me slamming my head on my desk in frustration after Worlds failed to make a reasonable dent in the MTGO metagame. Oh sure, there were a few new entries this week, but if I would have asked you two weeks ago what the most popular deck spawned by Worlds on MTGO, you would have never in a million years guessed “Turbo Fog.” Because that’s all Jacerator is. It even edged out the deck that won, Naya Lightsaber. It edged out Conley Woods’s newest creation, Magic Christmas Land. Of course, by “edged out” I mean “put up over triple the numbers.” Same story with the influential (buy semi-retired) Gerry Thompson’s Spread ‘Em deck. (Jeff Phillips gives a good rundown of all these decks at Star City Games. Except for Conley Woods’s deck, which the man himself wrote about at ChannelFireball.)

Now, to be fair, WotC’s reporting of tournaments stopped on Tuesday of this week, a scant two days after Worlds ended. However, there were Deck Techs posted throughout the tournament, and by early Sunday, any new decks would be known and disseminated throughout the MTGO metagame. If the MTGO crowd is anything, it’s fast at absorbing new technology. What this means is that, from last Thursday, when Worlds began, through Tuesday, when I run out of data from Wizards, only three entirely unknown decks made the jump to MTGO, one of which is just a Fog deck. (That is, Jacerator, Magical Christmas Land, and Spread ‘Em. I’m not counting Naya Lightsaber here, because Mike Flores had been pimping at his blog for a while before Worlds.)

It should be noted that Jund’s lists have been changing slightly, partially to adapt to the “growing” “hate” against them, partially to battle the mirror, and partially to integrate new tech (like Master of the Wild Hunt). So the still really has no natural predators. It’s sort of like the great white shark, in that respect. It’s the top of the food chain, and the only things that kills it are other great white sharks and the accidental interference of man.

Jund Bannings

Now, after nearly two months of Jund’s domination, and no end of it in sight, is it appropriate to bring up bannings? Probably not. Here’s my reasoning.

First, as Cedric Phillips points out, Jund Stinks. (That’s a SCG Premium article. Apologies if you can’t read it.) The deck is a pile of good cards, but it’s not overly synergistic. It’s not a deck that absolutely dominates its games. Usually. It plays a lot of removal, some decent creatures, and tries to win the cascade lottery.

Second, and this ties into the first point pretty well, there’s nothing specific to ban in Jund. There are a lot of good cards, but nothing on the level of Bitterblossom (the last major banning candidate) or Skullclamp or what-have-you. There’s no specific engine that makes the deck run. It just plays some land, some dudes, and hopes to beat you to death with said dudes. The closest thing to an engine I can think of is Bloodbraid Elf, and banning that also makes a ton of other decks worse, while not really affecting Jund. Think about it this way: if Jund doesn’t have a BBE, they just keep playing. When they hit one, they hope to hit something useful off it. It’s not a blowout card, and it’s not necessary for the deck to win. And that’s arguably the “most broken” card in the deck.

Third, and probably most importantly, the deck is beatable by decks that are not specifically built to hate it. Jund is not warping the metagame on the level of Faeries or Affinity. Most people are simply ignoring the deck and playing their own gameplan, and it’s working for a lot of people. That’s good. Contrast that with Faeries. If you didn’t play a deck that could somehow mitigate Faeries’ plan, you lost. You had to take Fae into account when you built a deck, and you don’t have to do that with Jund, because sometimes the deck just doesn’t do anything of note.

To sum up, no, Jund does not necessitate bannings, nor would they be effective. Hopefully this message gets out, because I’m starting to see the beginnings of insurrection on various boards.

Analysis

Finally! Here are some actual numbers!

Other includes one each of: Mono-Black Ascension, Blightning, Specter Unearth, Warp World, Grixis Control

Most of the commentary I have is listed above. Any of the Worlds-centric decks are discussed in the articles I linked above, so I’m not going to go into them here. A couple of nomenclature notes, and then I’ll get into the new (non-Worlds) decks this week. The deck I’ve been calling “Eldrazi Rock” has become “Junk,” partially due to its name being more well-known thanks to Worlds, and partially due to the fact that Eldrazi Monument is losing favor among players. “Sphinx Control” is the old “RWU Sphinx” lists, a change that reflects the fact that some of the Sphinx lists are dropping white. These are fundamentally different lists from “Spread ‘Em,” so I’m listing them separately. “Naya Other” consists of both Midrange and Zoo. Naya colors, non-Lightsaber-style lists. “White Decks” is, again, all the mono-white lists (plus one that splashed blue for an Outlander and Hindering Light.) I do this because the difference between White Weenie and White Midrange and White Tokens is generally about 8-12 cards. It also includes at least one copy of Rob Dougherty’s White Weenie deck, which I admire for its sheer chutzpah. (Sixteen land?!)

I’m going to talk about two decks today, and neither is particularly overwhelming, but I thought they were neat.

Really, this one is here because I like Sedraxis Specter decks. It’s similar to a build of the Crypt of Agadeem lists that run Specter as well… plus it’s a pretty straight Grixis Aggro deck. With all that discard, those Nyxathids have to be pretty big. I really don’t have a whole lot of insight into this one. I looks pretty straightforward to me, not terribly unlike the TarmoRack decks of yore. It looks like it might run into many of the same problems the Crypt decks would have (Relic of Progenitus and Jund Charm), but it also looks to take a proactive approach to the hate through a TON of discard, rather than the reactive plan of having discard and countermagic in the sideboard. So… there you go.

Conclusion

As you’ve probably noticed by now, I didn’t do an evolutionary analysis of the format, like I mentioned last week. Most of the reason for that is that it’s a freakin’ holiday weekend. I’ll actually write that article over the weekend, and post it as the Monday/Tuesday post. States is coming up, so I’ll probably be keeping track of Standard for another few weeks, and then I’ll be switching over to a Standard/Extended split since the Extended PTQ season is almost upon us. How I’m going to format those posts, I’m not exactly sure yet. I’ll figure it out when I get that far.

One last thing before I go. The 2010 MTGO Release Schedule has been posted. Fun news? Urza’s Saga and Urza’s Legacy arrive next year, as well as a fourth installment of Master’s Edition. Of course, this is in addition to the normal releases of Worldwake, Rise of the Eldrazi, Magic 2010, and “Lights,” the first set in the new block. Plus, the new Phyrexia vs. the Coalition Duel Decks is coming in the spring. Lots of activity on the MTGO front next year. Online Classic should be getting a boost from the introduction of Urza Block, and with the addition of MTGO PTQs (you know about those, right?) things are shaping up to be busy indeed for the digital Magic players.

Thanks for reading!

Post-Script – Bonus Graphic

Just in case you’re wondering, this is what the metagame looks like without Jund:

It’s not perfectly balanced, but it’s a lot nicer than with Jund. This has some nice, varied tiers of what is good. When you throw Jund into the mix, it becomes two tiers: Jund and Everything Else. This is becoming tiresome.

Distanta dintre prinderi: 10-20 cm. Fata de aluminiu trebuie dispusa intotdeauna spre spatiul interior. Latimea materialului izolator trebuie astfel aleasa incat placile izolatoare sa stea usor plasate intre capriori.

As most of you know by now, Zara is becoming a big name in the fashion world. Bringing the world professional suits, flirty skirts, shirts and trousers in both men’s and women’s collection, this is one name that absolutely will not to be forgotten. Now, Zara is offering shoes that will blow your mind with a variety of colors, styles, sizes, and prices. The creators at Zara have brought something to the table for everyone to try, and have made it possible for just about anyone to walk the street in style with their affordable prices.

Some brand name shoes cost up to five hundred dollars if not more, you can find Zara’s brand name styles for as little as one hundred and sometimes less than that, I’ve seen as low as forty dollars online! However, these aren’t your run of the mill cheap shoes; Zara shoes are gorgeous and can make anyone look good. Zara offers women strapped heeled sandals, thick pumps, flats, and many other various styles. By offering so many styles, Zara is creating something for everyone and gives everyone a reason to check them out.

Zara also offers men’s shoes, and while this collection is less popular, it is still a decent collection. Zara shoes for men offers sandals, traditional laced up sneakers and more unique edgy sneakers for those looking to try a bolder look. The men’s collection of Zara shoes is quickly becoming a big trend, what’s most unique; the Zara trend is to wear sandals with long business like trousers. Shockingly enough, this trend has caught on and looks pretty good on men everywhere.

This season, it seems that Zara is experimenting with flats for both men and women. In bold colors like purple and yellow, both men and women are treading the streets with bold colored flat sneakers that look so awkward, it works for them. That seems to be the Zara way though, they have made a fortune off of making things that just shouldn’t work look fabulous on anyone and they have taken styles that are considered traditionally ugly, and made them stylish. That is what fashion is all about, and that is one of the biggest reasons people are clinging to Zara this season, everyone is oozing wondering what will be next for this daring clothing brand.

Have you ever noticed that some 10K runs are actually open to people who want to do a 10K walk? We might assume that the walkers would get run over by the runners but this is far from the truth. In most cases the walkers are accepted as part of the group.

Many people enjoy taking a leisurely 10K walk instead of training to run that distance. They enjoy the scenery as they walk by it and they like the excitement of the race. Some of these races will have a competitive walking division while others will just give space to the walkers.

As an example, sometimes the walkers will start before or after the runners so that they can be at their own pace. Some people are going to just walk casually for the 10K walk and if that is the case they won’t need a lot of training to do it. However if you want to be competitive with your walking you will need to train for the 10K walk.

If you just want to take this stroll make sure that your running shoes are comfortable and that you have been practicing walking 45 to 90 minutes steady. This should have been done in the last month or two of your interest in the 10K walk.

You will want to know that a 10K walk is actually 6.2 miles. You will want to make sure you practiced a bit before you try to do this in a race because you will want to finish this distance. In general people who do a 10K walk actually train for it over an 8 week period. This seems to be standard if you want to walk in competition.

One of the most important areas you will need to master is the art of race walking. This gets you moving at a very fast pace if competition is on your mind. There are also rules for race walking: You have to have one foot on the ground all the time and the leg that is moving forward has to be straight at your knee until it is under your body vertically. This will help you do a better 10K walk as well.

Some people who decide to do a 10K walk may be former runners who either decided to stop running or had to stop because of injuries or illness. The good thing about this type of race is the fact that people in wheelchairs can also be a part of it.

There are many senior citizens who enjoy a 10K walk because it is exhilarating and because they can do it over a long period of time. This is a sport that combines physical fitness with a competitive focus for some. However, you can race walk at a leisure pace if that is what you want to do.

If you are interested in a 10K walk it is a good idea to talk to others who have done it. You may just find a buddy or two to walk with you.

It is just so exciting to go to a restaurant in bikinis or in your most comfi robe.

More and more hotels seem to open a restaurant in recent years, however, according to Booking.com, only 65 out of 193 hotels have restaurants currently. We asked Gordon Haig, head chef of Novotel Edinburgh Centre, what he thinks the reasons are.

I could not meet the busy head chef of Novotel Hotel as when he is not working he is either travelling with his family to explore new cuisines or he is ‘just’ too busy looking after Johnny, his one-year-old son.

Haig started as a sous-chef four years ago in the hotel and after leaving for another hotel (Holiday Inn), he became a head chef. Last year, Novotel seemed to be missing Mr Haig so they offered him the same position in their kitchen (by the way, that is when and where he met his wife, as she was the sous-chef there at the time). As he has been always working for hotel restaurants, Haig knows a lot about the issue.

Haig calls F&B (food and beverage) a ‘necessary evil’ to hotels, and says that nowadays they have the urge to have it, i.e.: bars and restaurants on the premises. The number one reason for this is money, of course, according to him. Although most of the hotels do not have as much income from operating restaurants then from rooms, they (especially newly opened ones), have to have it.

Mr Haig, who works in a hotel from which a mile radius away there are approximately 130 restaurants, admits: ‘In Edinburgh there are so many restaurants, that a lot of hotels will just see it as there is no point doing it because you can make more money just by having rooms.’ Although this might be the case, there are certain advantages of hotel restaurants as well.

The upside of a hotel restaurant for the guests are on a vast scale: one can eat a luxurious 3-course meal in casual clothes, wet hair (after being in the swimming pool which a lot of hotels own also), they do not have to care about transportation (need to spend less money), bad weather, they do not have to pay straight away, as they can charge everything on their room (at most places) and only pay when they leave the premises.

This approves of Haig’s idea: ‘People choose hotels that have a restaurant mainly because it is more comfortable,’ he said. Businessmen often work in their rooms throughout the day and they can also find comfort in room service. ‘They do not want the hassle of going out if they’ve got work to do,’ said Haig.

However, there are also downsides of these restaurants: a lot of them are a part of a hotel chain, which results in a standardised menu most of the time. Accor, (the company owning Novotel, Ibis, Mercure and many others), Hilton and Marriott surely have a standard menu and these cover more than 7600 hotels worldwide. This suggests that there is not a great variety of dishes (around 40), while in a simple restaurant – according to Haig – there are at least 120 choices.

Standardised menus are often chosen by hotels as it is more economical. They can sign a contract with the suppliers for a year in advance (these menus often change in a year’s term) and thus, they get discounts and also a standard price.

For some, these menus can be good, though. It can mean that if one goes to a hotel of the same chain he can be sure that he will get the same quality, taste and flavour.

Despite the downsides, hotel restaurants are suitable for groups (even if they stay for a week or longer), unlike most ordinary restaurants. If a group books lunch or dinner, hotels can usually offer TDH (table d’hote, French for hosts table) and buffet menus as well. Also, if one would like to try the specialities of a particular destination, these restaurants are flexible: they can create a special menu for certain groups if asked in advance. Haig, however, says that it is always good to look for a small, local restaurant: ‘I like trying a restaurant where the locals would eat in, rather than a hotel restaurant,’ Haig said.

The fact that Mr Haig has been working in hotel restaurants since 1996 can assure us that he knows a lot about the matter. When asked about where he would eat on a trip to a foreign country, Haig said: ‘Unless the hotel has a really good restaurant, I would always go out.’ That can be an advice to think about…

The Luminox Navy SEAL dive watch, one of the American company’s most most esteemed watches was

The Luminox Navy SEAL dive watch, one of the American company’s most most esteemed watches was released just 4 years after the company started business. The story began when U.S. Navy Procurement officer Nick North heard stories of a watch that boasted an effective new concept to watch technology.

This amazing new function was an illumination system that needed no exposure to environmental or indoor light sources or the use of batteries. In other company’s watches, even the dimmest glow needs contact with an outside light source. Not so with the Luminox watch. Utilizing mini gas lights or borosillcate glass capsules embedded on the hands, markers and bezel, this new technological advancement could function even in complete darkness.

The Lumionx company applied this proprietary illumination technology to create a customized watch for the U.S. Navy SEAL team. It would become the SEALs standard issue dive watch for night time missions. The technology of this watch – now on the public market – ensures one can see all the information you need at a glance, at any hour of the day, even in complete darkness. The system of capsules is guaranteed to last for 25 years.

Once word got around about the power of the Luminox lighting system, the company was courted by the US Air Force to create a watch for pilots flying the F-117 Nighthawk Stealth Fighter Jet. The pilots, who had already taken to the watch made for the SEALs were seeking a watch customized to their own needs, so Luminox custom-designed a new watch, acquiring the the privilege from Lockheed Martin, builders of the F-117 Nighthawk to use a picture of the plane for their marketing campaigns. A more lucrative contract followed with an exclusive deal to design more watches devoted to other combat aircraft such as the F-16 Fighting Falcon, F-22 Raptor and SR-174 Blackbird.

Nowadays it is not just U.S. Navy SEALS and Air Force Pilots who wear Luminox watches. Many other prestigious governmental organizations have assumed Luminox as their favoured watch, including ATF and FBI government agents and Border Patrol units.

Certain Law enforcement agencies and the U.S. Military have even made Lumionx-like illumination system a compulsory item in their required equipment issue, as noted in procurement specification MIL-W-46374F. Obviously the ability to comprehend vital information in complete blackness is an essential requisite of many such agencies.

Since its early days, the Luminox watch company have gone from strength to strength. Today Luminox watches are offered in 40 countries around the world. With a reputation that continues to grow based on the success of the Luminox Navy SEAL dive watch, consumers have quickly taken to the consumer version of the diving watch, possibly concluding that if the watch is adequate enough for Elite members of the U.S. Navy Forces, then it can manage their recreational uses.

Satisfactia clientului are o ecuatie simpla: este rezultatul scaderii performante percepute minus asteptari.

A former student of Napier College, as it was known then, Iain Pollock has been a journalist since he left school. In his years in this career, Iain has covered many local stories, and was a working journalist at the time of the Lockerbie bombing.

Today, Iain Pollock, as sub-editor of the Dumfries and Galloway Standard, could be described as a successful journalist. However, journalism was not his original career choice. “I stumbled in on it in a way,” he says, the subdued hubbub of a local newsroom on a slow day punctuating the background. “It was something I had considered doing, not my original choice.”

At a school careers fair he had attended a talk given by the then editor of the Observer series Bill Laidlaw. This would turn out to be a landmark moment in his career. After he left school, Pollock was leafing through the Annandale Herald in search of a job, and came across an ad for a trainee journalist on the paper. In the interview, Iain cited the careers talk he’d attended whilst at school as one of the reasons he had considered journalism as a career. He was astounded to discover that the man who was conducting his interview was the very same man who had given that talk all those years ago.

“That may have had something to do with me getting the job!” he says, with a smile in his voice. As soon as he was given the job he was given his own beat in the Lockerbie area, and was given the position of District Reporter for the Moffat News and Annandale Herald. “After that I was just sent out and left to find stories.”

After his period as a trainee journalist with the Observer series, Iain began his training to be a journalist at Napier College. It was here that he passed his proficiency as a journalist and was elevated to the position of senior reporter in just three years.

After this his progression was fairly straightforward: “Ten or twelve years ago, once I’d finished at Napier I went in for the job of depute editor at the Standard and got it.”

When asked if he has any tips for today’s budding journalist, Iain replied citing two main boxes which need to be ticked: “Learn shorthand. That’s the first thing I would look for on a CV if I was interviewing someone for a job on the paper.” He says that studying journalism at a college or university is very useful, but claims that good old-fashioned experience is an invaluable thing to have behind you when going for a job. “You can teach journalism to a degree, but nothing beats newsroom experience.

“The most important thing though is the basics.” says Iain. “It pains me when I take on juniors and they spell everyone’s names wrong.”

I ask Iain where the best place to look for experience is. He suggests taking part in the running of a student newspaper as a good way of gaining experience. “That always looks good on a CV.” For anyone looking to move in to the broadcast area of news reporting he says that radio stations are a good source of access to a working environment. “These places are always looking for free labour so it’s easy enough to get in.”

Iain leaves me with some words which I am sure one day I will look back on and consider them wise: “Journalism is a fun career. No two days are the same…it’s a bit crazy.”
