Dave is a CEO of an Internet startup that failed to get funding, and he’s got to find something else

Dave is a CEO of an Internet startup that failed to get funding, and he’s got to find something else to do. But he’s so focused on his failure that he’s having a hard time seeing what talents and skills he could leverage. Something invisible but crucial is standing in his way — his mental model. Let me explain what I mean.

Carol Dweck is a professor of psychology at Stanford who studies why some people succeed and others fail. What she’s discovered : At a young age, people develop beliefs that organize their world and give meaning to their experiences. These mental models determine the goals we pursue and the ways we go about achieving them.

1. Fixed mind-set
Intelligence is static and leads to a desire to look smart and therefore a tendency to:

Avoid challenges

Give up easily when faced with an obstacle

See effort as fruitless or worse

Ignore useful negative criticism

Feel threatened by the success of others

As a result, may plateau early and achieve less than full potential

2. Growth mind-set
Intelligence can be developed and leads to a desire to learn and therefore a tendency to:

Embrace challenges

Persist in the face of setbacks

See effort as a path to mastery

Learn from criticism

Find lessons and inspiration in the success of others

As a result, reach ever-higher levels of achievement

When someone like Dave, with a fixed mind-set, fails at something, they believe the situation is out of their control and nothing can be done.

They lose faith in their ability to perform. They shrink previous successes and inflate failures. They give up.

Those with a growth orientation do not see failure as an indictment of their capacity. For those folks, a problem is just an opportunity to learn new things. Their attention is on finding strategies for learning. When they blow it or meet an obstacle, they realize that they just haven’t found the right strategy yet. They dig in and make optimistic predictions: “The harder it gets, the harder I need to try. I need to remember what I already know about this. I’ll get this soon.”

Two questions can determine failure or success

These mind-sets can powerfully affect our career trajectories. One of Dweck’s research studies was with Chinese students in Hong Kong who were given the opportunity to learn English, which in the long run would increase their ability to get good jobs. The students with the fixed mind-set turned down the opportunity because they knew it was hard. But the students with the growth mind-set said, “ Sure, I’ll do it; e ven if I don’t do well, I’ll grow my capacity.”

She also discovered that extremely highly paid athletes with a fixed mind-set often don’t do well on a team. They decide they don’t need to practice because they are so good, and they flame out.

Want further proof that success comes from accepting that you will make mistakes and you have the ability to learn from them?

Would-be neurosurgeons were studied to determine who would succeed and who would fail. The researcher discovered that the answer came down to how they responded to the following two questions:

Do you ever make mistakes?

If so, what is the worst mistake you ever made?

Those who flunked out claimed never to make mistakes or attributed any error to things beyond their control. Successful neurosurgical students admitted to many mistakes and described what they had learned about avoiding them in the future.

Fear & Motivation

Dweck’s research offers powerful evidence that when it comes to moving through the challenges of a job search and career change, we need a growth mind-set. When we see our minds as capable of learning and life as a chance to grow, then everything we do is grist for the mill. We don’t give up when we experience setbacks but learn what we can from the experience and begin again, wiser.

Your attention is focused on the question, “ How can I use the constraints and challenges I’m facing to grow my own capacity?”

Where do these orientations come from? It turns out that it has to do with whether you think intelligence is fixed — you’re born as smart as you’ll ever be — or changeable — you can get smarter throughout life. When provided with evidence that the brain can grow new pathways, fixed-oriented freshman college students on the verge of dropping out switched to a growth orientation and graduated.

What about you?

In working with hundreds of executives, I’ve found that many of us have a growth orientation in some of these attributes and not in others. Each person is different based on his early history. For instance, I’ve got no trouble with the first three or the last one. I’m still working on seeing mistakes as learning opportunities. There continues to be a voice of perfectionism inside me that panics when I find I’ve made an error, although it’s much softer than it used to be. And I still have trouble seeking out feedback because I’m afraid it will be negative. But I’m working on it! I’ve gotten much better at feeling the discomfort and asking for input anyway.

Looking at the list, is your mind-set a growth or fixed one? Which of these are easy? Difficult? Try to notice without beating yourself up. That just interferes with a growth mind-set because it reinforces the belief that you should know everything already.

After all, even know-it-alls don’t know it all. And accepting this premise is the key to success.

Last Friday, my friend and I went to see one of the basketball games in University of San Diego (USD) as part of the Coaches vs Cancer campaign. The game was between the USD Torreros and Standford Cardinals. It was a such a great game and USD won 77-64.

So I started reading this piece of news, I guess you can call it, and was surprised to see that some places such as Standford have co-ed rooms. Think about it. We already have co-ed dorms, but now someone decided to take it to the next level. How does that make you feel? Would you want to go to a school that allows you to sleep in the same room as the opposite sex? Would that scare you?

As for me, I’m perfectly fine with the notion. It really doesn’t bother me. As long as there is an understanding between the men and I that there will be no touching, I can live with it. Although changing my clothes would be a problem. I guess the set up has a lot to do with how comfortable a person would be with the situation. I would go with it if it meant that the room was set up like a hotel suite. You know, one big room that has two bedrooms attached to it. But then again, that’s me. I wonder what the rest of the world has to say about it?

Researchers at Standford are now into their next stage of clinical trials of looking at low doses of Naltrexone for use with fibromyalgia patients. The first study which was implemented early in 2007 showed hope that Naltrexone might work for fibro patients with little side effects. Typically, Naltrexone is used in 50 mg dose to help treat alcohol and opiate addiction. They tested the drug for fibro in a very low dose, around to 4.5 mg. Instead of blocking the bodies pain receptors, the dosage of the medication “modulated activity of glial cells to act as a neuroprotectant and suppressant of proinflammatory cytokines”. (medpagetoday) The study was lead by Jarred Younger, PhD and Sean Mackey, MD, PhD. Here’s a great chart showing their results:

“Overall, self-reported, daily fibromyalgia symptoms (scale 0 – 100, with 100 being most severe symptoms). Time periods are: baseline, placebo, LDN, and washout. The data are separated into drug responders (solid line, 6 people) and drug nonresponders (broken line, 4 people). Drug responders are individuals who had at least a 30% greater reduction of symptoms during LDN versus placebo.” -stanford.edu

Hopefully by the end of this year we will know if the dug will help those of us with fibromyalgia.

Stanford Business School is one of the most sought school by graduates aspiring for MBA. The school is much popular among Indians seeking MBA from reputed institute and looking for jobs in US. One of the biggest impediment is the high cost of programme. Well here is some good news for Indians seeking admission. The Reliance Industries in collaboration with Stanford Business School has announced scholarship for Indian students.

The salient features of scholarship are:

The committee started accepting applications this year from 1st April 09 – 1st June 09.

The Reliance will shortlist 50 applicants. These 50 applicants will receive free GMAT vouchers from Reliance .

The shortlisted students applications will be forwarded to Standford which will admit up to 5 students to its famous MBA programme.

The shortlisted students will be attend all expense paid programme from Stanford.

The only restrictions to students receiving scholarship is that after completing their graduation, they have to come back to India within 2 years of completion of graduation and work for any Indian company, private or public, for two years. Failing to comply with this condition, the student has to refund the amount received via scholarship.

This year the applications were invited from 1st April 09 to 1st June 2009. The application form is simple, asking about academic and professional experiences, financial details and asking to write an essay : “How do you aspire to shape the Future of India”. The essay has a limit of 250 words which is very short considering you have to build up and present an idea. The form also asks to upload a CV briefing about your professional experience.

You can find full details for scholarship here

I hope applicants from India will find this information useful. For any kind of query feel free to ping me.

No point in hiding our face in the sand.

Printed media is in danger: bankruptcy of the Tribune Company, Seattle is now a one-newspaper city (Seattle Times), Boston maybe next (the Globe might also have to stop its printing press leaving it all to the Herald), troubles at Philadelphia and Minneapolis newspapers and many other media outlet around the country have shut or are in turmoil.

With that as a backdrop, the MIT/Stanford Venture Lab (VLAB) asked a panel of journalists and investors to explore some of the hard issues the media is currently facing at the dawn of the 21st century at an event last night.

So what’s the future of printed media? How will journalism and the news business evolve with technology? What are the new opportunities for entrepreneurs? How can high-tech innovators build new business models around news and the barrage of newly unemployed journalists?

For Silicon Valley celebrity Guy Kawasaki, printed newspapers simply have no future.

“I think it’s going to take the death of the organizations, it’s just like car companies, there’s too many car companies. We’re maybe in this perfect storm where death may be accelerated but I think it’s an over-supply issue… I think newspapers are going to die, but wether journalism does, that’s the issue,” added Kawasaki, the chairman of Garage Technology – a venture firm – and Alltop founder.

Journalists and Bloggers: different ethics

The panel also raised the issue of bloggers vs. journalists. Are bloggers really journalists? For tech analyst and columnist Larry Magid, bloggers are just oblivious of conflict of interests pointing to a mommy blogger that is blogging about candies and is on a candy company payroll (Hershey’s).

“I call that a whore and not a journalist… And she’s not even apologizing for it,” said Magid.

Although not all bloggers are oblivious of conflicts of interests, many are and would simply not say anything negative about a company or its products for fear of loosing “access” or even sponsorships.

For acting director of Stanford University’s graduate program in journalism, Ann Grimes what sets journalism apart from other forms of communication is:

“the practice of verification and confirmation and it is key for journalists to understand that and we trained our journalist students at old-fashioned gumshoe watchdog reporting… We teach them standards and ethics we think it’s important for them to understand the role of the press in a democracy.”

Citizen journalism is just not sustainable

I remember just a couple years ago when citizen journalism was all the rage and, in some cases, still is, in France for example with AgoraVox.

But both Grimes and Magid questioned the sustainability and the agenda of the citizen journalists.

“Citizen journalism is hard to sustain… Journalism is a full time job: hanging out at City Hall, developing sources, doing the nitty gritty work that is required to really break stories…,” comments Grimes.

“The thing that concerns me with citizen journalism… is what is the business model to do the kind of really really hard work that traditionally local papers do (like covering City Hall, small businesses…)… and are they doing it honestly, objectively, thoroughly, and are they going to continue doing it after there mood changes,” adds

Lots of experimentations going on to monetize content

Many business models are currently being tried today to monetize content. Grimes cited a few:

Subscription

Hyper-local models, with deep dives in local businesses

Micro-payments

Non-profit models for niche sites

Big media companies are talking about profesionnal subscriptions with niche and deep verticals that you can get professionals to pay for

Devices like the Kindle which open up the way for pay-content

Venture capitalists want either “eyeballs” i.e. “traction” or revenue

But at the end of the day what venture capitalists want to see is either lots of traction or some revenue generation.

“If you’re pitching venture capitalists many of them will tell you that they want to see a proven business model… [Twitter] may be the only company that raises money without a business model but it does open up the possibility that if you are showing them [VCs] eyeballs that are exponentially growing,it’s a good thing… So show them a lot of eyeballs or a lot of revenues, either one will work,” said Kawasaki.

And here are some random comments heard from the panel about journalism: it’s hard and now real-time, and it’s both an honorable profession and a privilege to tell stories and to be read by many.

Ditto.
