walking isn’t a new finding-researchers have been investigating it for the past 10 years or so. What is exciting about the research is that it is being taken to the next level. Researchers from Harvard Medical School showed that specific aspects of gait were related to specific aspects of cognitive decline.

Like many of our SWANs, Lawrence has hypotonia. As a baby, this wasn’t too much of a problem. He relaxed in his baby rocker just like any other little one would, he cozied up in his car seat happily, snuggled close in the sling for walks and played contently at home under his jungle gym. But as he has grown, and his development hasn’t progressed at the same rate, we have needed to find ever creative ways to give him safe and comfortable places to eat, play and travel.

Typically, a 15 month old would be sitting, crawling, standing and walking, but Lawrence is still just learning to sit. Almost a year ago, we were assured by the team at the children’s hospital that once his community referrals were in place for physio and occupational therapy, they would help us with specialist equipment: a seat to help him sit upright for playing and eating that would keep his spine straight, and then a standing frame to encourage him to weight bear and play upright. Sadly, as is often the case, this help has not been forthcoming.

Dealing with the authorities to get the assistance and equipment he needs is a political exercise that requires the tenacity and ferocity of a bulldog (which is a whole other post…).

When I realized it might be forever before we get a seat or a standing frame, and that Lawrence was spending way too much time just lying on the floor while I dealt with his sister, managed household chores or prepared meals, we had to take matters into our own hands and got busy on the Internet looking for equipment we could buy in the mainstream that would help him to play upright.

It has been a bit hit and miss but we have had some great success with some of the items we have bought. We have tried endless chairs, activity centres, high chairs, and next on the list are bath and car seats. It is an expensive and time-consuming mission researching and buying equipment and is very much trial and error.

Perhaps the best thing we have bought for Lawrence has been his Activity Centre. I wish we had bought one sooner. We had been told how important it is for Lawrence to practice standing, in his Piedro boots, every day, to develop strength in his leg muscles and stability in his joints, but were really struggling to get Lawrence to stand, supported, over the sofa. He just wanted to turn around and look at my face instead. And as he got bigger and heavier, I started to find it a real physical strain to hold him upright for any length of time.

In his activity centre he can stand and play, turning himself around, watching me do household chores, and entertain himself watching his big sister run around like a loon. I was worried that his physio might not approve, but she has given it the seal of approval. At some point in the future he may get a standing frame, but for now his activity centre is providing him with much needed standing time and upright play time to encourage his visual and hand-eye development.

I have heard many parents of hypotonic children say what a godsend the Bumbo seat is. And I have to agree. Lawrence was able to sit in one from about 10 months old and, with the tray in place, it’s a wonderful place for him to play while learning to sit. He likes to watch Mr Tumble from the comfort of his Bumbo, and I can sit by him as we try to learn some of the signs. Now he’s getting a bit chubby, we’re on the hunt for a bigger version… <watch this space>

High chairs have been the biggest challenge. We happened to have an old Bloom Fresco highchair which was absolutely brilliant for first weaning, as he didn’t have to be able to sit up to use it, and its egg shaped seat meant we could easily wedge him in there surrounded by tea towels. As he has got bigger and stronger, we’ve hunted for high chairs and booster seats that enable him to sit a bit more upright. Thanks to some other SWAN mums, I found out about the First Years Booster Seat which is brilliant for that wobbly-just-about-sitting stage that Lawrence is at now. Since we bought this seat, he is even picking up finger food and putting it to his mouth, something he has NEVER done before!

The next challenge is finding him a car seat. I had, naively, assumed we might get help with this, but we have been left to our own devices to find him something safe. I intend to keep him rear-facing as it’s safer for small bodies, especially those with poor muscle tone. In the next few weeks we will be taking a long trip to the In Car Safety Centre in Milton Keynes to choose him a seat. Of course, they are wildly more expensive than conventional toddler seats, but I am fast learning that a good deal of our not-so-disposable income will go into the “Lawrence Fund”, to equip him with everything he needs to keep him safe, happy and encourage his development in any way we can.

Thank goodness we are facing these challenges in an Internet age. With little to no support from the authorities in either providing or helping us to identify appropriate equipment for our boy, I am eternally grateful that I can just switch on the Mac to research and chat to other parents facing the same challenges.

There may be a new glimmer of hope for the elderly and specials needs individuals who are in the midst of life changing crises. Offering a possibility to walk again can be priceless. How important is quality of life to all of us, especially baby boomers who are facing retirement and long term care considerations in the future?

If an individual is in the process of spending down to qualify for Medicaid, and walking again will add to that individual’s best quality of life, why not use part of the Medicaid financial spend down to acquire an equipment piece which may help them walk again? Consider walking again as a positive step forward, honoring personal dignity and independence. Read my own story to learn more. The article appeared in the Spring 2011 issue of The Headliner, the newsletter of the Brain Injury Association of Oregon. BIAOR-5-2011_SecondStepArticle
