OK, can someone explain to me why these loser Stanford fans/students rushed the field after their victory over Notre Dame last night? Is it because they are pumped to finish the year 8-4? It can’t be because they beat an average Notre Dame team, can it? If anyone ever questioned these fans being a bunch of frauds, that question is answered. Notre Dame is a .500 football team! Stanford was favored! Hey Stanford students, go back to the library and science labs…let the professionals be sports fans.

Stanford 45, Notre Dame 38. What a fun game to watch, and very likely Charlie Weis’ last at Notre Dame. Yep folks, it looks like my least favorite coach in college football has finally come to the end of the road.

Notre Dame vs. Stanford was back and forth and very exciting. Two distinctly different offenses that were both extremely effective against two defenseless defenses. From the first play (Notre Dame fumble recovered by Stanford) to the last play (Stanford blocks the Notre Dame Hail Mary pass in end zone), just fun college football. Kudos to both teams for keeping the action coming, Fighting to the last second, and for never letting the competition degrade to uncontrolled violence.

So let’s start with the good, shall we…

Stanford ended its seven-game losing streak against Notre Dame with this win. Nice work Cardinal.

Stanford’s Toby Gerhard is a running back’s running back. Power, balance, vision, and 100% never-stop. Gerhard rushed for 205 hard-fought yards and three TDs against the Irish. He even threw a 18-yard touchdown pass. Watching this offense with this running backs brings back the great running offenses of my youth. I hope he wins the Heisman too, I love to see it go to a great running back.

Good stats for both teams, but Stanford’s offense controlled the ground game and also controlled the clock. The penalties could have hurt them, but the converted seven 3rd Downs to keep those drives alive.

How about Golden Tate! That guy is amazing. With 201 yards receiving and three TDs, he really was golden. He’s Jimmy Clausen’s favorite target and the every defenses worst fear.

And now the bad (or at least, bad for some)…

Notre Dame ends the 2009 season 6-6. In five years, Coach Weis has lost to Michigan State three times, Navy twice, Syracuse once, USC five times, Boston College twice, Michigan three times and Air Force once. He has zero wins against teams ranked in the Top 20 at the end of the season. Hardly a return to glory or “schematic advantage” for Notre Dame.

Coach Weis refused all interview requests including the traditional walk to the locker-room at half-time. He even declined to take part in the post-game press conference. He is, of course, avoiding answering the inevitable questions about his job at Notre Dame. So, after 62 games coaching the Fighting Irish, Coach Weis sneaks out the side door without a peep. Five years ago, he was making proclamations and bold statements. Now, not so much.

Coach Weis’ recruiting trip on the west coast has been cancelled and he flew back to South Bend with the team so that he will be available to meet with the Athletic Director. Yikes. How is “you don’t need to do any recruiting right now” ever a good sign?

Coach Weis has lost at least six games each of the last three years which is the longest such streak in ND history. His winning percentage is about 57%, but in the last three seasons he is 16-21 leaving him with a 43% winning percentage. Ouch. Well, way to get in to the books with that one Coach!

Suddenly, this book seems very, very funny. I hope they didn’t print too many.

Rumors are flying that Jimmy Clausen (nice shiner from a sucker-punch leaving a bar) and Golden Tate will forego their senior year in South Bend to head to the NFL. Without the magic that these two guys bring to the Irish offense, the challenge for whoever is coaching at Notre Dame will be markedly greater. Way to leave it better worse than you found it.

Well, I simply can’t wait to see who coaches ND in 2010. Their kicking names around in the media, but I don’t think they know yet. I’m thinking of buying a Fighting Irish sweatshirt to celebrate the end of the Weis era and a return to being a fan. I’m really pretty excited about it.

Some fun Weis-era photos to end this post with…

Oh, and a little trivia… Do you know who handed Coach Weis his first loss at Notre Dame back in 2005? That’s right, The Michigan State University Spartans. I believe MSU has the most wins at Notre Dame, outside of Notre Dame.

Toby Gerhart turned what could be Charlie Weis’ final game as Notre Dame coach into his own Heisman

Toby Gerhart turned what could be Charlie Weis’ final game as Notre Dame coach into his own Heisman Trophy infomercial.

Gerhart ran for 205 yards and three scores, threw an 18-yard touchdown pass and scored the game-winning touchdown with 59 seconds left to help Stanford hand Weis and the Fighting Irish a fourth straight loss to end the regular season, 45-38 Saturday night.

“There’s a bunch of 22, 23-year-old young men right there finishing out their career losing the last four games,” Weis said in a postgame radio interview. “They feel miserable and I feel miserable for them.”

Weis only conducted a radio interview after the game, declining to take part in the postgame news conference. He did not address his job status, but that should come to a resolution soon.

Article Submission Software .

Weis was set to go back to Indiana with the team instead of going on a recruiting trip as originally planned and will meet soon with athletic director Jack Swarbrick.

“We’ll engage in the evaluation in earnest following this game and we’ll go from there,” Swarbrick said before the game. He declined to comment after the game.

Weis, who has six years left on his contract, has a 35-27 record in five years as Irish head coach. His .565 winning percentage is worse than the .583 marks that got his two predecessors, Tyrone Willingham and Bob Davie, fired.

While Weis’ future may have already been decided, this signature performance by Gerhart may have been enough to earn him a trip to New York as a Heisman Trophy finalist in two weeks.

Article Submission Software .

“He’s made that statement the entire year,” coach Jim Harbaugh said. “He was incredible to watch. He said it all by the way he’s played. He’s been about it and not talked about it. He just kept going at it week after week.”

He threw his touchdown pass to Ryan Whalen on fourth-and-4 to help the Cardinal tie the game early in the fourth quarter. After Stanford (8-4) stopped Robert Hughes on third-and-2 from the Irish 35 with less than 6 minutes left, Gerhart carried seven times for 54 yards on the winning drive, bowling over would-be tacklers before scoring his 26th rushing touchdown of the season.

The fans chanted “To-by! To-by!” throughout the drive that was capped by a 4-yard run that the Irish (6-6) allowed him to score on in order to have time for a possible game-tying drive.

Jimmy Clausen and Golden Tate helped move Notre Dame down to the 24 before Chase Thomas sacked Clausen for a 7-yard loss. On the final play, Clausen’s desperation heave into the end zone was batted down by Michael Thomas, giving Stanford its first win against Notre Dame since 2001.

“It’s frustrating,” Clausen said. “It seems like every time we lose a game, we lose it by a touchdown or less. I’m a competitive athlete. It’s just really tough.”

All six losses by the Irish have been by seven points or fewer, with Notre Dame also winning four games by similar margins.

Multiracial youth that identify with two or more of their ethnicities are happier than those who only identify with one, according to a study published by the Stanford Graduate School of Business.
In the study, “The Interpretation of Multiracial Status and Its Relation to Social Engagement and Psychological Well-Being,” multiracial high school students were asked which groups they primarily identified with. Those who identified with multiple groups reported either equal or higher psychological wellbeing and social engagement than those who identified primarily with a single group.

According to the researchers, the ability to claim different ethnicities indicates resiliency; youth who identify with multiple groups can also adapt to different racial environments more easily.

It was time to say goodbye to the Pacific Northwest and start heading back to LA, I was due back at

It was time to say goodbye to the Pacific Northwest and start heading back to LA, I was due back at work on Monday.
The plan was to drive down to Sacramento Friday, stay at my buddy Smitty’s place, and then drive to the bay area the next morning to attend the Oregon-Stanford game, meeting up with our buddy Kyle who had flown in for the game.

It was an easy drive down to Sacramento, just like on the initial trip up it rained perpetually almost until the exact moment I crossed the border back into California where suddenly the skies cleared and it turned sunny again.

Somehow even when the sun is shining in Oregon, it’s still raining…

The next morning Smitty and I prepped for the game, heading out the door in separate cars so that I didn’t have to backtrack several hours after the game, would just be able to head straight to LA after it was over. The Ducks were coming off a huge win over USC the previous week, and we were confident the Ducks could take down Stanford for the 8th straight time.

I love the new Stanford Stadium in Palo Alto. It used to be the worst, most pathetic stadium in the Pac-10 conference. Originally built in the 20s, the stands were basically held up with chicken wire and 2×4s with dirt underneath the bleachers and a huge track around the field making the action far away from the stands…just a bad gameday experience all around, and with Stanford perennially fielding crappy teams there usually were more Duck fans at the games then Stanford fans, and those that were there were extremely apathetic.

But a couple years back they basically tore down most of the old stadium and rebuilt it. They reduced the umber of seats to one of the smallest stadiums in the conference, but the facility is gorgeous. There’s not a bad seat in the house, the sound system is pristine, they have hi-def flat screens throughout the tunnel underneath so that you never miss a moment of the action, and tickets are still some of the cheapest around.

“Oregon Expressway” leads to Stanford stadium, I thought that was a good omen, not a curse.

Smitty and I got there in plenty of time before the game, but after repeated calls couldn’t coordinate an appropriate meeting place with Kyle so Smitty and I got our cheap tickets and went in.

I like Stanford, but I really hate their mascot. I loathe their freakin’ tree, I just want to smack that stupid smile off its face. Their band is as boorish and classless as it gets, always going out of their way to be as insulting as possible.

When fans start dressing up as the Stanford tree, it makes me hate their mascot even more.

…And when that effin’ tree marched by in front of the Stanford band, I seriously for a moment considered rushing it and tackling that damn tree, oh I hate it so much.

The Stanford band during the pregame made fun of the old 80s computer game Oregon Trail, and halftime they spent their entire show making fun of LeGarrette Blount and the punch fiasco two months earlier at Boise State.

Pregame Smitty and I found our seats in the second deck of the west endzone, and soon enough the team took the field.

Stanford couldn’t match up to Oregon as far as talent, but there was a concern…Stanford has a big bruising power back named Toby Gerhart, an old school 3 yards and a could of dust style throwback to the earlier days of football. Oregon hadn’t really faced a guy like that, so much of college football now is based on spread offense and team speed, and Oregon’s defensive line is very undersized to maximize team speed. If Stanford could move the chains controlling the clock with Gerhart, they could keep Oregon’s offense the field and win. It didn’t seem possible that anyone this year could outscore Oregon, but maybe they could prevent them from being on the field to score.

Very early on our fears came true. Stanford was able to get 5-6 yards a pop with Gerhart carrying the ball, and their freshman QB Andrew Luck was near perfect throwing deep play-action passes into tiny windows where it didn’t seem possible. Perfect coverage was getting beat by perfect throws, and very quickly Stanford built a big lead.

The Ducks struck back, Oregon’s RB LaMichael James scoring on a 60-yard touchdown run. But for every punch Oregon threw, Stanford countered. Oregon just couldn’t stop Stanford all day, and by the second half it was getting out of hand. Oregon started a comeback, but mental errors were taking their toll. Oregon’s QB Jeremiah Masoli had a great game, playing in front of about 200 family members (he’s from the bay area, an entire Duck section was just Masoli’s family and friends), but his receivers kept dropping catchable passes. Multiple passes that could have very easily been touchdowns were incomplete, and by the 4th quarter things looked out of reach.

The yellow section was entirely comprised of Masoli’s family and friends, all wearing special Masoli #8 jerseys.

But the Ducks kept fighting, and after a couple defensive stops Oregon was within reach of tying it. A couple key drops though that would have been touchdowns came back to bite the team, while burning off the clock. Oregon came within a touchdown, but the onside kick was botched horribly and Stanford recovered. Gerhart kept pounding it, and the Ducks suffered their first conference loss of the season.

During the game I noticed my buddy Max was sitting right below us (wearing the #12 green jersey during the famous Oregon Green Man)

Gerhart set a school rushing record, with 38 carries for 223 yards on the ground. The entire game was basically just Toby up the middle, Toby up the middle, Toby up the middle, Toby up the middle…but the Ducks couldn’t stop it. so they kept on doing it.
It was the first time Oregon had lost to Stanford since 2001, and I can’t remember the last time Oregon had lost at Stanford, probably sometimes in the 90s.

I hate that damn tree so much, worst mascot ever.

As Stanford fans stormed the field, I tried to assess what had happened.
51-42.

It shouldn’t have happened that way. Oregon had guys open, but dropped easy touchdowns. They burned too much time, and just couldn’t stop Toby Gerhart picking up first downs with 5-yard dive plays. It was so frustrating to know exactly what was coming, but the defense just couldn’t stop it. Still, if only guys had caught the ball when it hit their hands, and had executed a decent onside kick near the end, the Ducks had a chance to tie it to go to overtime. Oh well, time to re-group and prepare for Arizona State back in Oregon the next week.

Smitty and I tried to reach Kyle after the game, but he was having cell phone issues. We considered finding a local sports bar, but figured it would be packed full of ‘Furd fans and we were both really depressed following the Oregon loss, so we just hit the road. Eventually by the freeway we split, Smitty heading north back to Sacramento and me headed south back to Los Angeles.

I had driven 3,000 miles in a week, bouncing all over Oregon and Washington visiting friends and family, attending two Oregon Ducks football games, and due back at work Monday morning. I had a week’s worth of programs on the DVR to catch up on, and to watch the TV broadcasts of the two games I had attended.

Oh noes!

Don’t worry folks; he’s ok. Yesterday morning, Tiger Woods pulled out of his driveway in Windermere, outside of Orlando, and drove into a fire hydrant and a tree. Luckily, he wasn’t wasn’t going very fast since the airbags didn’t deploy.

Although this happened at 2:25 in the morning, police say that the accident wasn’t alcohol-related. But I’m guessing it was tryptophan related! Too much turkey made Tiger too sleepy to drive! That’s my theory and I’m sticking with it.

Anyway, CNN reports that Tiger’s wife, Elin Nordegren, used a golf club to break the rear window of the car and save her man! It turned out Tiger only had a couple lacerations on his face, but still, girlfriend has hand for the rest of that marriage. Remember that time you wrecked the Cadillac SUV and I busted up in there and rescued you? Damn right you’ll do the dishes!

Here are some pictures of Tiger with his super adorable daughter, Sam, at a Stanford Cardinal game last weekend. Such a ponem!

The roads of life’s philosophy are actually not always straight you do encounter some drastic

The roads of life’s philosophy are actually not always straight you do encounter some drastic turns every now and then. And over the past some months I have encountered couple of them.

I was so adamant, I was so stubborn of my overconfidence to change some beliefs that now it is surprising to conceive there was still room for some amendment which I welcomed. One of them was the thought of choosing academia as a career. Right from my school days my teachers were convinced that I would make an awesome teacher. According to them I was relentless in explaining anything from most conservative to most unorthodox ways till the concept was fully understood. But somehow I always attached some rationale to the idea of not being a teacher (I would rather write later about that). Even when some of my closest friends were pretty sure about the fact that ultimately I would land up in IIT as a professor, I was sure I would never enter academia. However should I thank Stanford or not, it is for good or bad, for the first time in my life I had a feeling may be I was wrong. After all teaching as a professor isn’t that bad either, this thought was actually seeded here for the first time. And in fact it became all the more compliant with the kind of career I am looking for. If I am looking for a research career, being a professor is of equal standing as working in any research lab. In some sense it could be better than latter as you will not have to ride on some corporate strings which you might have to do in research lab in some situations. I will write more on my aspirations later, but I am happy and thankful to Stanford that it has helped me broaden my options right away in the first quarter itself …

One of my other perceptions which took a U turn, I feel is quite legitimate and I am sure most people in a similar area of research like me have realized and experienced it. It was my third year in IIT, placement season of my seniors. All brilliant guys in computer science interested in algorithmic studies and logic chose to join i-banks and financial companies. It was just money or the work was that interesting, my seniors convinced me that their journey is indeed amazing. According to them such jobs like high frequency trading are a nice excursion for people who love math. I just adore math and till now I kept believing that at some point of time in my life I would like to explore the world of i-banking by taking up a financial job. But after coming to Stanford I met a lot of guys who had worked in various big finance companies and now are back to higher studies. Their experiences present a dismal state of affairs. However the ah ha effect in this whole realization was attending one of the presentation by a famous i bank company D E SHAW. The talk was amazing. The company comprises of musicians, painters and what not, basically they said they look for people with talents and analytical skills be it in any area and in this way they maintain a quality talent pool in the company. They deploy tools from various fields of technology and you can do whatever you like, flexible working hours etc and an awesome pay. I was beginning to just get mesmerized when they said the crunch line ‘What is important to us are the inefficiencies in the market‘, is that all. Actually I discussed this with a lot of people who have worked in this area. Most of them said whatever you want to do in a company like that do not forget it is essentially alluring you with piles of green notes to just obey one principle that is how to find inefficiencies int the market efficiently. What I thought was that all this trading made the market more stable and efficient, that they assisted so that market and economy become more stable but their sustenance depends upon finding instability and inefficiency in the market and economy itself. This appears to me paradoxical. So essentially all your knowledge which you have acquired through your hard work all these years is now going into bluffing the market, well may be dignified bluffing, that is my favorite way of identifying a sugar coated quinine. I thought a lot on this and talked to a lot of people, there were mixed reviews but a nice thing is that I am not longer enchanted by the finance jobs particularly their math corner. Though I would surely like to first hand explore and validate once its futility to convince myself if it really exists….

The World Economic Forum is sponsoring the most extensive study to date on entrepreneurial growth-or

The World Economic Forum is sponsoring the most extensive study to date on entrepreneurial growth-oriented companies. The study will provide insight into the different factors that drive company growth, especially in the first decade of operations. The target set of companies should have at least 3 to 4 years of revenues. For some companies, this will coincide with the first 3 to 4 years of the companies’ existence. For other companies, there could be a longer time period since incorporation (such as in many life-science companies). A growth company is one in which there is a serious aspiration of growth (at least 20% to 30% or more) in revenues or profits each year over an extended period. In the early days, there may be much higher % growth rates with the ramp up period and because very high growth rates can occur when the “base” is low.

The study will focus on the global aspects of entrepreneurship in multiple ways:

Entrepreneurial companies from different regions will be examined. Companies from Asia, Europe, North and South America, Middle East, Africa, and Oceania will be included in the study.

The different growth strategies of entrepreneurial companies to expand beyond their initial “home base” will be analyzed. Consider the customer focus. Many early-stage growth companies adopt an early global customer focus due to the limited size of their domestic market (such as many growth companies in Ireland and Israel). Where there is a large domestic market, companies can differ at the timing at which they seek markets beyond that global market. The study will document and examine the consequences of early vs. delayed entry into global markets of entrepreneurial companies.

Companies around the globe are being impacted differently by the current economic difficulties. We will examine different strategies of growth-oriented companies to reduce the impact of the downturn.

Results of this study will be presented at the 2010 World Economic Forum meetings (Young Champions Meeting in Tianjin, China) and subsequently published as a WEF report.

High-growth emerging companies that are founded between 1998 and 2005, and have more than 50 employees or EUR 3 million revenues at any point are invited to participate in the study.

Every Heisman contender has a Heisman moment – that game where, when it’s over, you say

Every Heisman contender has a Heisman moment – that game where, when it’s over, you say to yourself “wow, he really deserves the Heisman trophy.” After watching Colt McCoy rip Texas A&M to shreds tonight, I sort of had that feeling. Sort of.

After all, it’s easy to make a case for McCoy. He is 12-0, and likely headed for the national championship. He now has 27 touchdown passes and nine interceptions to go along with nearly 3,500 yards. However, the nine interceptions is more than he had in 13 games last season. And in order to match his touchdown and yardage total from a year ago, he needs seven TD passes and about 400 yards in the next two games. Even if he does that, he will have needed 14 games to do what he did in 13 in 2008. To go along with those monster 2008 numbers, he had 591 rushing yards. This year he has just 368, and only because he rushed for 175 tonight. He also has nine fewer rushing touchdowns.

Here’s the question: should we compare a Heisman candidate’s numbers to those of a season ago? My answer is no. But the voters will. And McCoy’s superior 2008 season wasn’t good enough to win the Heisman. Why should this year be different?

So what about Mark Ingram? The Alabama sophomore is 11-0, likely 12-0 after the Iron Bowl, and is averaging 6.8 yards per carry and 127 yards per game. He seems to be getting most of the talk right now, but why? Is it because the Tide are #2 in the nation? Because he plays for a school with a rich tradition? Because he was on the cover of Sports Illustrated? He only has 12 touchdowns. We might as well throw UTEP’s Donald Buckrem in the mix as well. He has more yards, yards per game and touchdowns than Ingram. And he certainly doesn’t have the offensive line Ingram has.

So do you give it to Ingram, with worse numbers than a handful of running backs from non-BCS schools, because those running backs don’t have to run against SEC opponents?

Here’s another running back you may not know about – Toby Gerhart. He plays for Stanford. Stanford is in the Pac 10, and believe it or not, it’s the best conference in the country. Don’t believe me? Read this.

Gerhart plays for a school who’s playing nine teams from the best conference in football, plus bowl eligible Notre Dame. All in all, Stanford has a schedule ranking (13) that’s 28 places higher than Alabama (41) and 43 places higher than Texas (56). Gerhart has rushed for 1,531 yards, second only to Buckrem, and has 23 rushing touchdowns, second to no one. But his team is 7-4. So I ask, should we give the Heisman to a guy with better numbers but a worse record? Tim Tebow won the award the year he went 9-4, but finished third the year he won a national championship at 13-1.

It’s taken me a while to get to this option, but I now present you with the only one that makes sense: Case Keenum. Say what you want about his strength of schedule or the Houston play calling. I’m about to shut you up.

Keenum is 9-2, and almost surely to be 11-2 following a Conference USA championship in a few weeks. He is more than 1,000 yards ahead of the next highest passer in the country. That’s unreal. Forget the schedule. He’s a machine. 1,000 yards? Are you kidding? He doesn’t have a Jordan Shipley on his team. There’s no Mark Ingram or Toby Gerhart to balance the offense. This is a one man show. Defenses know exactly what’s coming and still can’t stop it. That’s impressive. His 36 touchdowns leads the nation going away. He’s the only player in the country throwing for more than 400 yards per game. And for those of you saying that his pass attempts are inflated, try wrapping this number around your head: six interceptions. Six. in 553 pass attempts. McCoy has three more in 161 fewer attempts. And McCoy has a line that doesn’t let anyone touch him.

Keenum, unlike McCoy, will best his 2008 numbers, blow away all 2009 QBs in every statistical category, and, sadly, probably won’t even be invited to New York. But he should be. And he should win it. This is a very interesting race, and the other contenders have too many question marks surrounding their legitimacy. For once, give it to the little guy, on the little team.

My Heisman ballot:

1) Case Keenum
2) Colt McCoy
3) Toby Gerhart

a few years ago i took a creative writing class at stanford (nice to be back on the Farm, i’ll tell you…) and the teacher i had (she was superb) recommended that each week we come to class with a piece of very short fiction: no more than a page long and with a certain weekly theme. these themes ranged from 1) write a piece of short fiction without using the letter “s”; to 2) write a piece of short fiction with sentences no longer than 3 words. each of these restrictions ironically created the most wonderful pieces…

i recently came across the one i wrote with the rule: “write a piece of short fiction in which the first line is the same word repeated three times.” and here it is…

No. No. We served focaccia drizzled with honey. And it wasn’t May, it was July. And the way the paper napkins tried to fly from our laps in the wind made me think of seagulls. No, it was not for him, it was for Simone. Because she needed it. Simone with her soft pink skirt and dark hair. And Simone got honey on that skirt and cried and cried. No, it wasn’t really the honey that made her cry. No. But she did look beautiful. Simone. Even crying. She was such a pale little thing, sitting there with her feet crossed at the ankle and with her napkin, like a dead bird in her hand.

No. No. It was late afternoon and, unlike the week before, we had wind. And those two little girls danced with the ribbons from their hair. Remember? And it made Simone smile. No, we were happy that she smiled, though it didn’t last. To think that we only had her for that day in her pink skirt and she only smiled once about the ribbons. No, I know we can’t think that way. But I remember her hands were cupped about her face. And her hands were white and curved, like two small shells. And I thought she must be cold. But I ate, while the honey dripped down my arm, and I spoke with someone else. No. No. Not Simone.

And to think I could have told Simone that her hands looks like shells. Or that honey could easily come out of her skirt with just a little touch of white vinegar. Or that her smile at the ribbons could be enough. No, I did not. But none of us did. We all held her away, like a fragile cup that might craze if the tea is too warm. We held her at a distance that enabled us to see her as pink and white and small and cold. And that portrait of her, that way, must have seemed romantic to us who did not know how to help. So instead, we ate the warm focaccia and savored the sweet honey and watched the napkins and ribbons flutter. And left her there, to the wind. And though none of us said a word, Simone must have heard “No.”
