Now-defunct Charlottesville, VA rockers Clare Quilty have a cool, industrial-cum-punk, girl-fronted sound like Garbage or Snake River Conspiracy. They took their name from the character in the Nabokov novel and subsequent film adapations (in which his part was considerably beefed up) of Lolita. It seems that they parted ways after just a couple albums. I’ll come back to them another day because they had a cool sound and I’m not totally clear on what happened with their breakup (it was news to me when I went to grab their official site link and it was down … then when I cruised the wiki, it said they’d split).

This track, “Snow White,” comes from their second LP, Strong, and at first seems to be about getting murdered during rape, but I think if you listen carefully there’s a case to be made that it’s actually about a twisted relationship, or just some good old-fashioned masochistic consensual sex.

Dr. Strangelove or:how i lerned to stop worrying and love the bomb, 1964 – Direção: Stanley Kubrick – Elenco:Peter Sellers,Peter Sellers,Peter Sellers.

Rir é a única escapatória.

Wow I just read that apparently Stephen King is considering penning a sequel to The Shining! My first thoughts were that this was a terrible idea and it really made no sense for him to do this other than a big paycheck. Since many have said that over the years he’s lost his touch, it made me wonder just how watered down this sequel would be or more so what it would be even be about? Well after an onstage interview at the Canon Theatre in Toronto, the Torontoist had this to report on the book’s possible plot:

Check it out…

“Seems King was wondering whatever happened to Danny Torrance of The Shining, who when readers last saw him was recovering from his ordeal at the Overlook Hotel at a resort in Maine with fellow survivors Wendy Torrance and chef Dick Halloran (who dies in the Kubrick film version). King remarked that though he ended his 1977 novel on a positive note, the Overlook was bound to have left young Danny with a lifetime’s worth of emotional scars. What Danny made of those traumatic experiences, and with the psychic powers that saved him from his father at the Overlook, is a question that King believes might make a damn fine sequel.

So what would a sequel to one of King’s most beloved novels look like? In King’s still tentative plan for the novel, Danny is now 40 years old and living in upstate New York, where he works as the equivalent of an orderly at a hospice for the terminally ill. Danny’s real job is to visit with patients who are just about to pass on to the other side, and to help them make that journey with the aid of his mysterious powers. Danny also has a sideline in betting on the horses, a trick he learned from his buddy Dick Hallorann.”

So far it seems that King has a decent beginning story planned. I like the idea of following Danny ( I guess he’s the only link to the original ) as he is older and what eventually ends up happening to him. Whether or not King can execute it as brilliantly remains to be seen. I’m sure the movie version of this book will suffer greatly from Kubrick’s classic. Which I think is still one of the most frightening horror movies ever made. Who could possibly tackle the sequel as a director to make this movie live up to the first?

[Click on the image to uncensor it, i.e. to see it as it was originally intended, but beware the naughtiness within...]

OK, adults only for this one. Spectacular Attractions is usually a family show, but this is a different kind of Friday. Here, go and look at Pinocchio, or possibly the Muppets.

A frame grab from Stanley Kubrick’s final film, Eyes Wide Shut. Kubrick died shortly after completing the film, having promised to deliver an R-rated movie (apparently, he watched a bunch of Hollywood’s more sexually explicit films in order to gauge what would be considered acceptable to receive such a rating). The sequence in which Tom Cruise visits a masked orgy was considered to be NC-17 territory, a rating which ostensibly marks something out as unsuitable for children, but which actually decreases its chances at the box office, rejection by self-righteous finger-waggers and unwarranted controversy from a wide variety of spoilsports. However, although MGM surely would have just snipped out the relevant glimpses of humping, they found themselves hidebound by their commitment not to re-edit or cut a frame of Kubrick’s footage. What to do? The simple answer would be to suck it down and release the film unadjusted, take the reduced box office safe in the knowledge that you hadn’t compromised the artistic vision of a man on whose name you’d been happily trading for years. Alternatively, you could take some digital people and graft them onto the film to cover up those dangerous bits of flesh. Very clever – loyal to the exact wording of their commitment to Kubrick, but actually snuffing out the spirit of it in one quick application of polygons. The result can be seen in the image above.

Barbara Creed saw this as an advance notice of the coming age of the synthespian, when human actors would routinely be replaced by digital substitutes. She suggested that as they took over, we might have to change the way we relate to people onscreen, since the virtual actor would have no Unconscious, and thus not be “subject to the same experience as the living star, experiences such as mothering, Oedipal anxiety, hunger, loss, ecstasy, desire, death.” But then, she also predicted that porn stars, already artificially augmented beyond the realms of realism, could be doubled by virtual actors. It all sounded a bit William Gibson to me, and this week’s picture instead made it look as though digital people were just going to show up in films where they weren’t wanted and spoil everyone else’s view.

The National Council of Teachers of English annual conference kicks off tomorrow, so I’m heade

The National Council of Teachers of English annual conference kicks off tomorrow, so I’m headed to Philadelphia for a few days. That means two things: 1) Things will be slow (or absolutely silent) around here once I leave tomorrow afternoon until Sunday evening, and 2) I needed to write my weekly review of a Stephen King movie adaptation before I left.

*****

Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining (1980) probably has the most impressive pedigree of any Stephen King adaptation. Brian de Palma was still making his reputation when he gave us Carrie; David Cronenberg was (and, really, still is) a cult director at the time of The Dead Zone; ditto George A. Romero (Creepshow and The Dark Half); and Frank Darabont was primarily a screenwriter at the time he made his feature-film directorial debut with The Shawshank Redemption. The only adaptations comparable to Kubrick’s would probably be John Carpenter’s Christine, which came in the middle of a long run of early 80’s, post-Halloween hits (Escape from New York; The Thing; Starman), and Rob Reiner’s adaptation of Misery. (I know Reiner is also responsible for Stand by Me, but his two films previous to that – This Is Spinal Tap and The Sure Thing – weren’t huge hits at the time. Misery, on the other hand, was his William Goldman-penned follow-up to the enormously successful When Harry Met Sally…)

As much as I like Carpenter and Reiner, however, they’re no Kubrick. When he directed The Shining, these were Kubrick’s previous four movies: Dr. Strangelove; 2001: A Space Odyssey; A Clockwork Orange; and Barry Lyndon. Holy shit, indeed. No other director of one of Stephen King’s books has that track record, and it really is sort of curious that a director of Kubrick’s stature would take on an adaptation of a pop horror novel.

For those who don’t know the story, it’s actually one of the simplest in King’s canon. In a nutshell: Jack Torrance (played by Jack Nicholson in what might be his most memorable role) takes a job as caretaker of the remote Overlook Hotel during its closed winter season. He brings his wife, Wendy (Shelly Duvall, who, to put it charitably, never quite finds her footing in this role), and young son, Danny, to spend the winter with him. Madness and ax-murder ensues.

One of the benefits of this little adventure of mine is that I get to watch some movies that I haven’t actually sat all the way through in a long time. The Shining is certainly one of those. I’ve seen bits and pieces on television, but it’s been years since I’ve watched it in its entirety. I’d forgotten, first of all, what a beautiful movie it is. Those first, sweeping images of what’s supposed to be Colorado (but which is, in fact, Glacier National Park) are still breathtaking, but these opening shots are really just a prelude to Kubrick’s use of Steadicam in the Overlook Hotel, rolling us seamlessly through the hallways and stalking the characters as they move in and out of the hotel’s cavernous rooms. Not just virtuosic from a technical standpoint, The Shining also contains a handful of iconic images that linger even after the movie is over: the twins in the hallway; the elevator pouring blood; the hedge maze; Danny tearing around the hallways on his Big Wheel; Jack sticking his head through the splintered bathroom door and uttering the line, “Here’s Johhny!” Regardless of what you might think of the story (or of horror movies in general), it’s just a hell of a lot of fun to watch.

That said, the movie has some odd flaws. Pacing is one. It’s entirely possible that this was part of Kubrick’s grand design, but most of the conversations between the characters seem uncomfortable, stilted, wooden. There are weird pauses and wonky reaction shots in the opening interview scene between Jack and the Overlook’s manager, and none of the scenes where we’re supposed to buy into Jack, Wendy, and Danny as a family really work. Try as I might, I can’t see Nicholson as a family man, and this is only compounded by the off-putting scenes where I think he’s trying to convey fatherly love but actually seems more like a sarcastic SOB who’s just killing time with this family until he can clock out and head to the Playboy Mansion. Nicholson’s descent into madness is one of the selling points of the movie; unfortunately, it’s only when he’s crazy that he’s actually believable.

But Shelly Duvall takes the Grand Prize for acting atrocities. It’s a bizarre casting choice, to be sure, as there was nothing in her acting history to suggest she could play Wendy with any degree of credibility. It’s a fairly demanding role – she fears for her son, watches her husband descend into madness, and has at least a couple confrontational scenes that a better-suited actress could have knocked out of the park. Unfortunately, it looks for all intents and purposes like Duvall was already auditioning for the role of Olive Oyl in Robert Altman’s Popeye. It’s a shrill, off-kilter performance that, amazingly, never hits one authentic note in the movie’s entire two hour and twenty minute running time.

Despite its flaws, the movie works. It works because of the amazing visuals (and I’d be remiss not to at least mention cinematographer John Alcott), and the nearly-palpable sense of dread that infuses virtually every scene of the movie. It’s far from perfect – and not nearly up to scratch with Kubrick’s earlier films – but when Nicholson’s performance finally jives with Kubrick’s direction and visual acuity, it’s a masterwork of tension.

I came across this piece in the Oxford Young People’s Guide to Film, or the Young People

I came across this piece in the Oxford Young People’s Guide to Film, or the Young People’s Oxford Guide to film, or the Oxford Film Guide for Young People. One of them. It was published in 1995, pre-IMDb, and you can tell.

Here is the entry for 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968: dir. Stanley Kubrick), a film I love (SPOILERS I guess). I’ve pointed out all mistakes below.

2001: A Space Odyssey is based on a novel

Wrong. It’s inspired by a short story called ‘The Sentinel’ written by Arthur C. Clarke. The novel was developed alongside the movie by Clarke and Kubrick.

by sci-fi author Arthur C. Clarke. The complex storyline starts four million years ago,

Wrong. It starts at ‘The Dawn of Man’, helpfully pointed out in the movie.

when peace-loving apes

Wrong. They’re just normal apes. The whole point of the opening scene is that they’re not self-conscious enough to be anything.

discover a black slab of stone,

Wrong. It’s never revealed to be stone. Also it’s called a monolith, but I’ll cut the writer some slack, this is meant for Young People.

which somehow causes them to evolve into violent hunters, prepared to kill to protect their territory.

Wrong. It causes them to evolve into humans. Again, see the title at beginning of the section.

Then, sometime in the distant future,

Wrong. It’s definitely set in 2001. Clue’s in the title.

the slab begins signalling from the moon

Wrong. It’s a different monolith that’s been buried on the moon.

and a craft, controlled by a computer called HAL, is sent to investigate.

Wrong. It’s sent to Jupiter. This segment has the title ‘Jupiter Mission’.

In mid-voyage, HAL starts to malfunction and wipes out the crew before one astronaut manages to disconnect it

Looking good so far.

and return safety to earth.

I don’t think he’s seen the movie.

2001 transformed special effects and inspired many later sci-fi blockbusters. Viewed today, the effects are still startling. It took over three years to shoot at a cost of some £10.5 million. Echoing many of the themes popular in the 1950s,

It doesn’t really. 1950s sci-fi was full of cold war paranoia metaphor (The Day the Earth Stood Still, 1951) and creature features (Creature From the Black Lagoon, 1954, et al), with the occasional 1984 (1955) and Village of the Damned (1960) that dared to think outside the sci-fi conventions.

However, these were both based on books, as was the spate of H. G. Wells adaptations (The War of the Worlds, 1954, Journey to the Centre of the Earth, 1959, The Time Machine, 1960, etc.) and the big stand out, Forbidden Planet, which was of course based on Shakespeare’s The Tempest. I see none of these films’ themes in 2001.

the film shows that although humanity has become increasingly greedy and brutal, it still has the power to reform.

This isn’t what the movie’s about. No-one reforms in this movie, literally or metaphorically. Likewise there’s no greed or brutality on display. Kubrick deliberately went for cold, emotionless performances from his actors.

Maybe what he means is mankind’s arrogance in thinking that they’re top dog in the universe, and thinking that they can explain the whole universe. That ties in with the HAL plot – often mistakenly made the focus of discussion on this film – with mankind thinking they can create a sentient machine and have everything all work out.

(Side note: I heard somewhere that the reason HAL malfunctions is because, for secrecy reasons, he’s asked to lie about the purpose of the mission before they set off, and so his values and principles are all distorted.)

Let’s let the Film Guide take us home:

Audiences either loved or loathed 2001, and to this day books and articles are published which try to explain its meaning.

I watched a rerun of Friends today. It wasn’t funny. At all. Which isn’t to say that I never liked the show, but smug humor doesn’t age well. And I was mildly annoyed with its complacent tone even back in the nineties. “People get paid for writing this?” I wondered. “Hell, stuff a wad of cash in my fist and I’ll write lazy, sarcastic one-liners till the cows come home!” But graver still than ten seasons of crime against quality humor, was the crime once perpetrated against my favorite genre—more specifically, against The Shining.

Uh-oh!

In episode 13 of season three, Joey and Rachel decide to read the other’s favorite book. This means that Joey has to plow through “Little Women,” while Rachel gets to have some quality time with “The Shining”. Now, when this episode originally aired, a few years had passed since I’d read Stephen King’s tale of hotel madness. But I remembered the plot well enough. And since I’d already seen Kubrick’s adaptation a couple of times, I was especially attuned to the differences between source material and movie. Clearly, nobody who worked on that episode of Friends had read the book. Or if they had, they disregarded the facts for the sake of a stupid joke. In my book (geddit?), that’s cheating.

It's not what she expected, but still a gripping read ...

Joey: Oh, all blank and no blank makes blank a blank blank!

Say what? Forgive my confusion, but isn’t Joey supposed to be referring to the novel? They’ve exchanged books, not VHS tapes. Why is he talking about a scene that only appears in the movie? If you’ve seen The Shining, you no doubt remember the moment when Shelley Duvall riffles through her husband’s monotonous manuscript and grasps the true depth of his dementia. It’s a “whoa” moment, for sure. But like I said, you won’t find it in Stephen King’s original book. And in case you didn’t already know, it really bugs me when people don’t get their facts straight.
