In October of 2006 my husband and I took a trip to Vancouver for my 50th birthday. It was a truly wonderful trip, 1st class flight both ways thanks to frequent flier miles, lovely hotel in town, delicious food, breathtaking scenery, friendly people. Construction was already underway for this year’s Olympic games in the city and on the road to Whistler. I thought I would share some of our photos with you in anticipation of the upcoming games. Most of these photos are mine but some are Dana’s. This will be a three part post – City of Vancouver, Road to Whistler, and Vancouver Island.

Today: Part 1 – Vancouver City

Staying in the the city was a great experience. My two regrets about this trip are that 1) it was not long enough, only 4 days in and around Vancouver, and 2) that I did not take more ground level city photos. There were coffee shops on every corner and sometimes in the middle of the block too. There was a tapas bar next to the hotel. We ate at a small cafe around the corner for breakfast one day. Cute shops and a club were on the street behind the hotel.

I live in Vancouver – the glorious city on the brink of hosting the world and the 2010 Winter Olympi

I live in Vancouver – the glorious city on the brink of hosting the world and the 2010 Winter Olympic Games!

The key word here being – WINTER – as in WHERE IS IT? Don’t get me wrong, if you’re a visitor, tourist, or non-resident of any kind coming to Vancouver – this is precisely the weather you would want for sight-seeing in and around our amazing coastal city – mild, sunny, barely a jacket required. Last fall marked my first endeavour to plant tulips in the garden – and they have already sprung, cheeky things! Running the seawall and trails of Stanley Park, one of my favourite things to do, has never been better! In fact it is so mild that Vanoc, I am told, has been trucking in snow around the clock from the interior of BC. Not ideal for a Winter Olympics setting. Even Letterman is making a plea on our behalf – good to see his glass house is intact – LoL.

And well, isn’t that just Murphy’s Law. Last year we couldn’t get out the front door we had so much of the stuff. Anyone not having the good fortune to have grown up or lived in most other parts of our great land – especially the prairies, as I did – where mastering winter driving is de rigueur – barely bothered to sweep the snow off their cars. My kids were overjoyed that they couldn’t go to school and spent hours digging tunnels and caves and sliding down anything that resembled a hill around the neighborhood. Transit couldn’t run, people couldn’t get to work – it was quite comical actually. Cold – but comical.

Nonetheless, whether we are willing to admit it or not, most of “us locals” normally pray for this kind of winter. After all, isn’t that we most have going for us over other parts of Canada? The saying goes that in February in Vancouver, you can ski, golf and sail – all in the same day – not that I know anyone who does that – but still – doesn’t get much better than that, at least not in Canada! Weather was definitely the main reason I moved here almost 15 years ago – minus 35C in March, in Edmonton just wasn’t working for me anymore. I fell in love with Vancouver and have never looked back!

Now, when I travel to other cities as I often do for work – Calgary, Edmonton and Winnipeg in particular – I literally shriek at the cold! Yes, I have become a weather wimp – I admit it. I was in Winnipeg last week – where at the infamous corner of Portage and Main – the temp clocked in at a harsh MINUS 33 Celsius – with the windchill! Holy Mother of God. And that wind was a blowin’ – I can attest to that.

Anyway, besides all that, my inner fashionista has to ask – isn’t it hard to be stylish in months and months of those subzero temps? For my business trip last week – I had to dig out my big, bulky coat – which in of itself is no easy feat getting through airport security, the way it is these days. Then, I had to apply tons of layers (thankfully layering is “in” much more that it was back in the day!) I had forgotten about the staticky hair and clothes clinging to me all the time like I had been vacuum-packed – not to mention frosted over & steamed up glasses, salt-stained boots; I even wore tights under my suit! I guess the bonus is you get a bit of a work-out hulking around all that gear all the time. Still, I was surprised when I got to Calgary and was walking around through the city’s very clever, and very necessary, “+15” walkways that connect much of downtown. I spotted many (read: more than several!) women in open-toed shoes and bare legs – I kid you not. Mind you, it was only minus three that day – balmy by winter standards, no question. And I am also very aware that we’ve abolished the “no white after Labour Day” and “your bag and shoes have to match” and “blue & green should never be seen” – all those archaic fashion rules – but still – isn’t that a fashion faux pas somewhere?!

Anyway…the Olympics are coming! The Olympics are coming! Throw on as much red and maple-leafed gear as you can find (and need to stay warm!) – crack open a Molson product – and enjoy the Olympics!

GO CANADA GO!

stay warm – but don’t be beige!

Vancouver említésekor a jól értesültek a zöld színt látják maguk előtt.

Például a belvárosi Burrard híd egyik sávját 2009 óta kizárólag a biciklisek használhatják.

Lord Stanley

Hogy még régebbre visszanyúljunk a zöld gondolkodásban, előránthatjuk Lord Stanley-t, aki a város közepén elhelyezkedő 405 hektárnyi, mosómacikkal tömött esőerdő parkot adományozta a városnak. A park jelenleg is változatlan formában létezik.

A zöld árnyalatai

Milne megírta Winnie the Pooh, azaz Winnie a kisbocs történetét, amit Magyarországon Micimackó néven ismerünk.

A világ legjobb helyére jönnek…

A világ legjobb sportolói szó minden értelmében a városba jönnek néhány hétre.

Itt a példa! Rajtad a sor Budapest!

As I mentioned a couple of days ago, my trip to Vancouver for the Every Day Fiction Two launch event

As I mentioned a couple of days ago, my trip to Vancouver for the Every Day Fiction Two launch event wasn’t all business. My lovely wife took a couple of days off work to come with me, and her mom, who lives in California and doesn’t get to see us nearly enough, met us in Seattle. Since this was our first visit to Vancouver, we allowed an extra day to see some of the sights around town, and I’m glad we did.

We arrived in Seattle at about noon on Thursday, January 29. I would have preferred to fly directly into Vancouver, but it would have nearly doubled the airfare. We rented a car and drove the rest of the way, a little less than three hours north on Interstate 5, a very pleasant, scenic drive with some nice views of downtown Seattle, the Space Needle, and Puget Sound.

I’d read some reports of travelers getting delayed at the border, what with the new passport requirements and all, but we zipped through the Canadian checkpoint without incident after answering a few polite questions. I noted that the Canadian checkpoint was clean, attractive, and very welcoming. The U.S. side was badly in need of a fresh coat of paint and resembled the back gate of an Army post on the BRAC list. C’mon, Uncle Sam, these are our friends and allies. We can do better.

Entering the metro area, our first glimpses of downtown Vancouver were breathtaking. The city is surrounded by water, and the skyline is studded with tall, shining high-rises, with the snowy peaks of the Cascades in the background. Picture postcard stuff. We crossed the bridge into downtown and descended into the maze of skyscrapers, fortunately only taking one false turn before locating our hotel.

The folks at EDF had recommended a downtown hotel, the Kingston, and I was a little apprehensive about it–small downtown inns and their neighborhoods have often seen better days, and my lovely wife is very selective about where she lodges. My fears were unfounded. From the cheerful welcome at the front desk, to the well-tended interior, to the immaculate, cozy room, all our expectations were exceeded. We had dinner at the adjoining Kingston Tap House and Grille, which provided both great food and great service. I’d recommend the Kingston to anyone pondering a few days’ stay in Vancouver.

After dinner, we took a short stroll around the neighborhood, and it didn’t take long to find evidence of the ongoing preparations for the 2010 Winter Olympics. The town was all dressed up with signs, banners, building-wide murals, and art displays. An entire street was cordoned off just a couple of blocks from the hotel, foot traffic only, to accommodate a sculpture garden with a variety of abstract art and a small “forest” hung with paper lanterns decorated by local school children. Some of the lanterns had an Olympic theme, some drew inspiration from local Native American culture, and a few…took their own path. One austere drawing in black crayon depicted a wall switch with the label, “Always turn the lights off.”

There were a lot of people out and about, even though the Olympics were still a couple of weeks away and most of the athletes and spectators hadn’t arrived yet. We were struck by how young everyone seemed to be. Most of the crowd was twenty-somethings, and it was a challenge to find anyone who looked older than forty. It felt a little like we’d stumbled onto the set of Logan’s Run. We were told later that downtown Vancouver was dominated by college students and young professionals–the older folks preferred living on the outskirts of town or in the country.

Downtown was in pretty good shape. There was a fair bit of ongoing construction in preparation for the Olympics–lots of cranes and lifts about, new signs and facades being put into place, some of the areas for concerts and other activities under assembly. On the down side, there were a lot of panhandlers on the street corners and around the transit stations, and our hotel clerk warned us against the unsecured parking garages, prime targets for car thieves.

After a good night’s sleep, we had a light breakfast at the hotel and set out for a day of touristing. We drove north to Stanley Park, a forested peninsula that juts out into the harbor. There was a display of replica totem poles there, but the real attraction was the view of Vancouver and the surrounding mountains. A couple of barges moored in the harbor carried Olympic rings and other decorations, perhaps part of an upcoming fireworks show or nighttime display.

Also in Stanley Park was the Vancouver Aquarium, which we didn’t tour, mostly because the admission price was so high ($22). Fortunately, the Aquarium’s big draw, several beluga whales, were visible from a public viewing area adjoining the Aquarium, so we didn’t feel like we’d missed out too badly.

After exploring Stanley Park, we made our way to Granville Island, an artsy-craftsy marketplace area on the south side of downtown. It took a little doing to find the single entrance, and parking, like parking everywhere in Vancouver, was a challenge. We finally got in and enjoyed a delicious lunch at the Public Market food court, which offered a broad selection of ethnic cuisine and fresh baked goods.

We strolled through a few of the shops, then set out for the Museum of Anthropology at the University of British Columbia. We could easily have spent the entire day there and not seen half their collection of artifacts from cultures around the world, including a huge offering of art, clothing, and jewelry from the First Nations tribes of British Columbia. There was also a sizable collection of ceramics donated by one of the museum’s founders, and a small area devoted to modern art from local Native American artists. The totem poles and carved house posts inside and outside the museum dwarfed the ones we’d seen at Stanley Park.

One of the most impressive pieces on display was “Raven and the First Men,” a sculpture in yellow cedar by Haida artist Bill Reid that captured the weight of an ancient legend in a very fresh way, honoring the old and the new simultaneously.

Dinner that night took a little finding–there’s lots of street food and many tiny walk-up cafes in downtown Vancouver, but finding a moderately-priced sit-down restaurant was challenging. We ended up at a Red Robin, not exactly what we wanted, but it was good enough. My wife became convinced that Heinz ketchup had a different formulation in Canada, and she liked it…a lot. I now have to figure out how to order a bottle of Canadian ketchup via the internet, as nothing else will ever quite measure up. Perhaps on e-Bay.

That pretty much concluded our sightseeing in Vancouver, although my wife and I took a walk later and explored the underground malls adjoining the subway stations. Vancouver has an extensive network of subways, trains, and buses, and if I hadn’t already rented a car, I would have taken full advantage.

Vancouver is a “green” city that caters to pedestrians and cyclists, and driving a car around is subtly (and sometimes not so subtly) discouraged. Navigating and maneuvering downtown is difficult. Parking is a nightmare. When you can find parking, it’s very expensive, and there’s no such thing as free parking (or at least an open free slot) until you cross the bridges that separate the city center from the ‘burbs. Any major attraction features both a steep admission fee and metered/ticketed parking.

But that was a minor annoyance. Vancouver is beautiful, with lots of things to do and see, even in the winter. The people are friendly, helpful, and accommodating, and they’re very proud of their city. Not once did I get honked at or hassled by a local driver for hesitating, driving slower than the posted limit, or making a less-than-graceful lane change. We were blessed with unseasonably pleasant weather for sightseeing, with only a few brief periods of drizzly rain, nothing that stopped us from going outside.

We had a great time, and we’ll be back. Perhaps as we watch the Winter Olympics coverage, we’ll catch a glimpse of some landmark we saw during our visit. Thanks, Vancouver!

A várost Hongcouvernek is csúfolják.

No, hát étterem tekintetében a város a világ élvonalában van, egyre-másra költöznek ide a neves séfek – elfogadható áron ehetünk, kiemelkedő minőségű olaszt, kínait, japánt, oroszt, ukránt, arabot, indiait… persze magyar ételeket is.

A város másik meséje
Ma a repülőtérről érkezve a horizonton feltűnik a belváros a havas hegycsúcsok előtt csillogó tornyaival, szinte olyan, mintha Manhattan újraszületett volna zöld környezetben.

Ahová a világ legjobbjai jönnek…

Azóta megnyílt a határ. A lehetőség a hivatalos, pontrendszeren alapuló, letelepedési procedúrán keresztül mindenki előtt nyitva áll.
Manapság minden évben közel 350 ezer embert enged be a kanadai kormány; Dél Ázsiából, Kínából érkeznek a legtöbben.

Downtown Vancouver

As people around the world flock to Vancouver for the 2010 Olympic Games, you may find yourself overdosing on sports. But Vancouver is known for much more than just this fantastic sporting event: it’s also home to thousands of movies and television shows filmed on a daily basis.

Here are a few you may want to check out if you’re downtown anyway:

Sheraton Wall Centre: X-Men 3

Vancouver Sheraton Wall Centre – X-Men 3: The Last Stand
This is where they give the cure to mutants, and I believe a character jumped out the window and you see the Wall Centre on his/her flight down.

Vancouver Public Library: Smallville

In one episode of Smallville, Tom Welling aka Clark Kent is in Metropolis and destroys a car as it smashes into him in front of this building.

The Buschlen Mowatt Gallery – Psych, Season 4, Episode 1
For any Psych fans out there, this is the episode where Cary Elwes is an art thief and “steals” a crown at this very gallery. Sadly, I could probably list shot-by-shot all the filming locations for that episode and do a Google Street View for it… but I won’t… for now.

St.Andrew's-Wesley United Church: Supernatural

This must have been in its first few seasons when I watched this show, but it’s right across from the Sheraton Wall Centre. The scene was actually between two churches, I just don’t know the name of the other one but you can see it on the right side of the picture.

You know that scene where Jessica Alba is naked on the bridge and then Ben Mulroney from CTV asks a random question? It was on this bridge.

Any dark and ominous scene with trees were filmed here… Obviously not this view, more likely deep into the woods. But you probably shouldn’t mention The X-Files in Vancouver. We’re still a little bitter about a comment made by David Duchovny on Late Night with Conan O’Brien that went a little something like this:

“Vancouver is a very nice city if you like 400 inches of rainfall a day”

Well… it does rain. But it’s also an equal amount of sun. It’s just that it’s in a different season – one might call it, summer.

Source: Vancouver Public Library

I was intrigued by this 1930s photo of noted Vancouver photographer Philip Timms perched beside a large petroglyph in Stanley Park, not least because it is obviously not from the coast. The caption indicates as much: “rock was brought to Stanley Park from the Cariboo; at the former totem pole site at Lumberman’s Arch.”

A little digging around suggests this boulder was discovered in 1923 in the Lone Cabin Creek area of the middle Fraser River, just south of the Gang Ranch. It was moved to Stanley Park in 1926. As of 2002 at least, it was still there. If anyone knows for sure where it is, let me know. The complete absence from flickr, for example, suggests to me that the information below sayng it is stashed out of site at the Vancouver Museum may be accurate. This site has a number of undated pictures of it (not the apparent deterioration from the picture above – it probably doesn’t do well in the rain) and some history and interpretation which I can’t vouch for:

It is thought that this boulder may have been a marker of a Salmon site. Another theory has the stone important in puberty rites. This boulder is probably about 500 years old. This petroglyph was carved in the vicinity of Lone Cabin Creek, north of Lillooet, on the Fraser River. It first gained Euro-Canadian attention in 1923 upon its discovery by H.S. Brown a cariboo prospector. He brought its existance to the attention of William Shelly, the Vancouver Parks Board commissioner of the era. Shelly proposed moving the six-ton rock from its location on the Fraser to a new home in Stanley Park. Three years alter, the move commenced. The rock was first loaded onto a raft to be floated to the nearest railway station. This awkward plan failed as the weight of the boulder caused the raft to sink immediately after loading. The next, more successful attempt involved a team of ten horses and a sled. In the dead of winter, the “Shelly Stone” was dragged to the closest rail line. This whole procedure took over a month and cost Shelly two thousand dollars which was a lot of money at the time. The Shelly Stone arrived safely at Stanley Park. It was set in a foundation of concrete as it was felt this would prevent the enormous rock from being carried off or destroyed. The rock remained at Brockton Pt mislabeled as an Indian Pictograph until moved to the Vancouver Museum basement in June of 1992. During the years in Stanley Park, human contact and urban polution have worn on the petroglyph like sandpaper. It is hoped that the protected environment of the museum will guard its images from further deterioration. Since it is not part of the regular museum exhibition, it currently does not cost to view it.

This boulder must be of the highest spiritual and cultural significance — shouldn’t it be moved back to the Cariboo where it belongs?

For more than a century there has been a Great Blue Heron colony in Vancouver’s famous Stanley Park, which is a thousand-acre forested peninsula adjoining the city’s densely populated West End. Although herons usually avoid human contact, in 2001 they began nesting next to a cluster of tennis courts along Beach Avenue, a stone’s throw from the nearest high-rises. By 2007, the colony contained 183 nests, and 340 young were fledged. Since then, numbers have dropped; in 2009 there were 145 nests, and only 175 fledges resulted. A major reason is predation on hatchlings by raccoons, whose numbers in the park are artificially high due to intentional (illegal) feeding by humans.

And then came the balloons…

I don’t really have very much to report. I had a work commitment yesterday and could only afford a couple of hours at Maplewood, my second home. Nothing out of the ordinary. I found 25 species in the 2 hours that I was there. The east side mudflats and the feeders were where all the action was. Nothing on the west side except for the Mallards, Wigeons and a lone Coot in the pond. The best part of the day was meeting yet another birder (expat) that I know very well from the Birding in BC forum. It’s always great to meet you guys and gals out in the field. Another face to a name. We stood and talked for 10 minutes and compared notes and bird stories as a Cooper’s Hawk sat in a tree looking down at us.

Today I headed up the Sea to Sky Hwy and found myself at the Squamish Estuary. For those of you thinking about taking this trip anytime soon, let me save you some time and gas….DON’T. I walked around for almost 3 hours, covering 3.8 Kms and was lucky to find 12 species. Very quiet. I usually get to the Squamish Estuary about once a month on average and have never seen it this quiet. The most notable bird of the day was a Steller’s Jay. On the way back down, I stopped in at Porteau Cove. The wind was blowing and the waves crashed against the shore. This is another place that I enjoy birding. I get here a few times a month. Today, I saw a pair of Harlequins and nothing else. No Gulls, no Crows, no Cormorants, nothing. Needless to say I didn’t stay there for very long.

Kate joined me for a trip into Stanley Park. It was just starting to drizzle, so I knew it would be an early day. My main goal was to find the Sanderlings as I didn’t have them on my 2010 list yet. Finding the Red Crossbills or Pigeon Guillemots that John Reynolds reported yesterday would be a bonus. They didn’t disappoint me today. 23 Sanderlings foraging on a low tide just south of Third Beach. Also in the area were Black Oystercatchers, Surf Scoters, Barrow’s Goldeneyes and 4 Harlequin Ducks. From there we moved on to the stone bridge at Lost Lagoon so Kate could see the White-throated Sparrow. Within a few minutes of being there, Kate found it on the north-east side of the bridge with the Juncos and Song Sparrows. Next was Brockton Point with a few Pelagic Cormorants and 2 female Common Mergansers. At this point the rain was starting to come down. A quick drive over to Beaver Lake where Kate was hand feeding the Chickadees. The Chestnut-backed Chickadees out numbered the Black-capped 4-1. There was a Great Blue Heron, a pair of Wood Ducks, and a pair of Hooded Mergansers with the Mallards. After 45 minutes of feeding the birds and standing in the rain, it was time to get back to the car for some warmth and to dry out. I didn’t end up finding the Crossbills or Guillemot, but I can’t get everything in one day. All the more reason to keep my eye on the north side seawall.

The Vancouver 2010 Olympics are less than a month away and things are buzzing in the city! Riding on a bike around the seawall and through parts of the city, one could feel the excitement building. Already the tourists have started to arrive, or perhaps they were the athletes, coaches and their parents. Regardless, you could hear numerous languages being spoken: German, Russian, Swedish, French and Mandarin; and witness photographs being taken all along the seawall route……at Science World, Plaza of Nations, Marinaside in Yaletown…..of the Inukshuk in English Bay, the felled tree in Stanley Park, the Olympic rings in Coal Harbour….and in the city, photographs of the Olympics countdown clock and the sponsors’ ads wrapped on buildings. It was a fun and interesting day as a local Vancouverite playing tourist in her own city. Here are some of the same photos those “other” tourists were taking:

The day started with a new NMT bird. This morning while walking my dog, I came across a Lincoln

The day started with a new NMT bird. This morning while walking my dog, I came across a Lincoln’s Sparrow. Great way to start the day. NMT bird #39 and a new one added to my 2010 list. I almost passed it off as a Song Sparrow. It flew in front of me into a blackberry bush, and I only caught a very quick glimpse. When I passed the point that it entered, I had a look in and could see it sitting in the branches. I knew right away that the malar stripe wasn’t right for a Song Sparrow. I waited for it to give me a closer look. My patience paid off as he came back out in the open, and it was a Lincoln’s Sparrow.

Back to Stanley Park I went to see if I would get lucky the second time on the White-throated Sparrow. I started at Third Beach with a high tide. I didn’t see the Sanderlings but had close views of 6 Black Oystercatchers running along the sandy beach. I caught this one having breakfast.

Black Oystercatcher having breakfast at Third Beach

Along the west seawall including both Second & Third Beach were all 3 Cormorants, Barrow’s and Common Goldeneyes, Buffleheads, Wigeons and some close views of Harlequin Ducks. Next stop, Lost Lagoon. I started at the stone bridge just waiting for the White-throated Sparrow to say hello. Nothing! Lots of Spotted Towhees, Black-capped and Chestnut-backed Chickadees, Dark-eyed Juncos and a lone Golden-crowned Sparrow, but no White-throated. In the 15 minutes I stood there, another birder came along and mentioned that he hadn’t seen it either. I started my walk around Lost Lagoon and would try again before I left. The walk produced several ducks. Mallards, Wigeons, Hooded Mergansers, Common Mergansers, Ring-necked Ducks, Lesser Scaups with one Greater Scaup hanging out with them, Buffleheads, Coots, a single female Canvasback, and Common Goldeneyes, with one Barrow’s with them. He wasn’t very shy and allowed me this nice shot.

Barrow's Goldeneye in Lost Lagoon

As I was making my way back to the stone bridge and my starting point, I was watching 20 plus Dark-eyed Juncos foraging on the ground just before the wooded bridge. I pulled up my binos to scan through them and right in the middle of the flock was the White-throated Sparrow. I tried to get a picture, but someone was walking down the opposite way and sent the entire flock into the brambles. I waited once again and within a few minutes the White-throated Sparrow was back on the dirt path foraging on the ground. Happy with my sighting I moved on to Beaver Lake. A walk around Beaver Lake produced several Chestnut-backed Chickadees. I’ve noticed this year that there are more here than at Lost Lagoon. On the lake (if you can call it that) were Mallards, Hooded Mergansers, a pair of Buffleheads, a pair of Gadwalls, and a pair of Green-Winged Teals. 3 Brown Creepers found, 1 Winter Wren and a couple of Golden-crowned Kinglets. I’m not going to mention the Song Sparrows and Spotted Towhees…oops I guess I just did.

The day finished up with my favourite drink in hand, a venti dark from Starbucks. I took my coffee and went down to John Lawson Park in West Vancouver to see what I could find. The usual with some more Goldeneyes off the pier. A quick walk through the community gardens turned up a female Anna’s Hummingbird at the feeder.

Finally, a day with some sun. Stanley Park was my destination this afternoon. I was hoping to find the White-throated Sparrow that’s been seen at the stone bridge at Lost Lagoon. I was not lucky today, but it’s still there, as Rob Lyske saw it today while doing some NMT birding. Great sighting Rob! I walked around Lost Lagoon, over to Second and Third Beach. Lots of ducks and 3 Bald Eagles flying overhead. The winds were gusting to 55km and the waves were crashing over the seawall. As per the norm, I added 1 new 2010 species to my list; Chestnut-backed Chickadee.

I then went over to the east side of the Park in hopes of seeing the American Dipper that’s been hanging out at the aquarium. Strike two. A walk along the north seawall produced several Pelagic Cormorants, Buffleheads and Common Goldeneyes with 2 Barrow’s Goldeneyes with them. When I returned home, I got out my bike, pumped up the tires and tuned it up. It’s now time to start leaving the car at home (unless I have to get to Boundary Bay or Iona) and get some serious NMT birding done. My numbers for the year are terrible. Rob picked up his 67th species today and I’m sitting at 18. I have a long way to go.

Cheers and Happy Birding to everyone this weekend!

Every December, in Stanley Park, they set up a fantastic display of Christmas lights all through the park. And, as soon as the sun goes down, they turn them all on and illuminate the entire park. It is fantastic! They have a free section and a pay section, where you pay for a ticket on the Stanley Park train and get to chug all around the park and see even more lights. Then you can finish it off with a steaming cup of hot chocolate or roasted chestnuts!

Heaven!

Just one word of advice…buy the tickets ahead of time online..I got there at 4pm and the tickets were sold out until 10! You can get them from the site or from Ticketmaster

Styling & Photography By: Jason C Santos

i had an awesome time shooting these photos. mark was really easy to work with and didn’t need too much direction. the weather was on our side and just enough light from the sun. it was hard narrowing down which pictures to post so i posted 30 out of 89 that turned out, out of 100 shots. now i just have to narrow it down even further to update my portfolio. any feedback would be awesome! thanks!

After finding the terrific image of Mercury on a web site named Flicker, I looked for photographs of statues of runners. And there are many! One of the best and best-known is this statue Julie and I have seen of a runner breaking the imaginary tape in Stanley Park in Vancouver, B.C. :

The Runner

The statue of Harry Winston Jerome is a memorial to his life as a Canadian track and field runner who broke many world records and competed in the 1960, 1964 and 1968 Summer Olympics. He won gold medals in the 1966 British Empire and Commonwealth Games and the 1967 Pan American Games.
