While shopping with my GF, last Sunday (7 Dec) walking past us on the upper level of an eastern-suburbs shopping centre was red-haired Aussie actor David Wenham.

This was especially odd as GF had just the other day been to see the movie Australia, which co-stars Wenham as a villainous station manager.

He was casually attired wearing a polo shirt and cream-coloured shorts, and was with his young daughter Eliza Jane.

Oddly he was sporting a large band aid on his right cheek – possibly a minor injury from filming his latest project? – which had the effect of partially disguising his features.

Wenham is famous internationally for his role as Faramir, downtrodden younger brother of Boromir, in two of the Lord of the Rings films. He is also well known with the ladies for playing Diver Dan in Australian television drama series SeaChange.

After my recent encounter with a group of Ferrari Californias during my usual bike ride, I discovered that Ferrari is holding the official test drives and press previews of the new model in my town. Automotive journalists are coming from all over the world to try out the new model and they are trying them out along the stretch of road where I usually go out riding my Wilier.

Since the excitement of seeing the Ferraris last time was followed by a bad (Mercedes) driver’s attempt to run me down in front of my house, I increased my visibility this week by wearing my bright yellow ‘bad boys of cycling’ kits – first a Riccardo Ricco style Saunier Duval outfit and after my retro Marco Pantani-Mercatone Uno kit.

I usually go out (when I can) around 5pm after a long day at work or sitting in front of the computer working on the final revisions for my book. On Wednesday in particular, a number of Ferraris were going up and down the road the entire time I was out. I saw red ones, blue ones, grey ones, with the tops up and down, with and without camera crews, going fast or slow. Wow! My favourite moment was watching a group of excited local Fiat drivers pass one particularly slow moving Ferrari. The locals were punching their fists in the air as they managed to pass the supercar (at approx. 30kmh). For you car buffs, I can only say that the new model looks nice and makes a very loud roar as it passes…

Meeting the stars

As I was coming up to the top of the steepest hill on my route, winding my way around the switchback curves after 35km of fun, I came across a parked car and camera crew. Curious and always keen to talk to the stars (I met Angelo ‘King Kong’ Mosca twenty years ago), I felt I recognized the ’motoring journalist’ from somewhere:

Me: Are you the guy from the car show on British tv?

Star: Yes.

Me: Cool.

As I was speeding down the other side, by racing bike standards, the Ferrari zoomed past and the driver waved at me. After I got home, thanks to Google, I connected the face with Tom Ford from the tv programme Fifth Gear.

All in all, an interesting afternoon on the bike.

The house is a wreck, the yard is a wreck, I’m a wreck.  Wow, that wasn’t nearly so difficult as I thought it would be.  Now that everyone’s up to speed, let’s move on.

Chris Kattan (of Saturday Night Live fame) was 2 feet away from us on the ferry from Bainbridge to Seattle yesterday.  This was not a brush with greatness, so what was it?  I was stupidly and disproportionately excited, so it must’ve been something . . . A brush with “Hey that guy looks kind of familiar, wasn’t he somebody?”  I feel like the thrill I experienced speaks volumes about my life lately.

I FINALLY got to see my brother, sister-in-law, and niece Samantha last night, after a year and a half!  Samantha is AWESOME and adorable.  Matt and I brought her a stuffed octopus from the Seattle Aquarium. She named it Clams Jessica Ulsund.  Then later amended that to Clams Jessica Oyster Ulsund.  We were eating clams at the time, talking about oysters, and everything she names is Jessica.  So let’s not get all crazy about how creative she is.  Though she is.  The most creative, smart, funny, brilliant, beautiful girl in the whole wide world.

There’s a whole lot of goodness, still, in the thick of the ickiness.

You might remember Kirk from his days playing Mike Seaver on Growing Pains, which is one of my favorite ’80s – ’90s family sitcoms of all time!  Below is the family portrait:

I was really jealous when she said she saw Kirk at Da Silvano, especially since she told me the unfortunate information that she NEVER watched Growing Pains growing up.  Who can resist Mike’s crazy antics, Carol’s pubescent frustrations, or Maggie’s motherly advice.  There are two significant family members missing from the above portrait, so posted below is a supplemental “kids only” photo):

Chrissy and Luke (Leo!).  Aww look at all the Seavers together.  I miss this show.  I miss this genre of television.  Can we please go back to these lovely snipets of idealistic family life where everyone is perfectly witty?  When she told me she saw him, I started singing the theme song (below video is from Season 5):

Maybe I watched too much TV as a kid.  Maybe I’m a sucker for feel-good comedies.  Maybe I need a break from YouTube.  What I don’t have is the experience of seeing Mike Seaver in a restaurant in NY, which is a little disappointing.  But in all seriousness, remembering this sitcom puts a huge smile on my face, and makes me realize how much I miss these shows: Growing Pains, Full House, Step By Step, and the rest.  Of course some are broadcast in syndication now, but they are definitely not on enough to distract us all from watching A Shot At Love With Tila Tequila over and over again.
