Ah, videogame weapons, the heart and soul of any good game. Ranging from the brilliant (Red Faction Guerilla’s Sledgehammer), to the obscene (Destroy All Human’s Anal Probe), they can make any game a blast. Here’s mu nominations fo my all time top three videogame weapons.

Number 3: The Taser (Syphon Filter 2)

The Syphon Filter series is a brilliant set of games, with a decent plot and some cracking action, but its true crowning glory is secret agent Gabe Logan’s personal weapon- the Taser.

Not a traditional police Taser, this version can shoot its wires obscenely long distances, latching on to enemies and electrocuting them even if Gabe’s on the ground and the enemies are on top of a high rise building. And it doesn’t stop there- hold the button down long enough and your unlucky enemy will literally burst into flames, before falling to a grizzly death. In sheer deadly form, the Taser has no equal.

Number 2: Alex Mercer (Prototype)

Being a genetically enhanced superweapon, Alex Mercer, of the incredibly bloody game Prototype, can technically qualify for this list – after all, his entire body is a weapon.

Be it claws, a massive blade, chitinous armour, huge hammers, a whip or the ability to fly, Alex has the power to take on any occasion, and if things get a little too hot to handle he can always run up a building, jump over skyscrapers or grab the nearest person, punch their head off and transform into their form- the guy’s a brutal killer who is literally walking death, and more than deserving of the runner’s up spot on my top three list.

Number 1: The Force (Star Wars: The Force Unleashed)

I’m a Star Wars fan. There, I admitted it. So, imagine my joy when I heard of The Force Unleashed- the tragic tale of Darth Vader’s Apprentice. Then imagine that this man was one of the most powerful Force-users ever to walk the universe. A man so powerful that even the Emperor feared him- the man is a wrecking ball in human form.

The Force is powerful in anybody’s hands, but in the hands of the Apprentice it can do just about anything _ wrench doors off their hinges, fling Stormtroopers left and right, crush massive walkers into dust and even pull a Star Destroyer out of the sky, when the Apprentice comes to call, you’d best start running.

Truly a force to be reckoned with. The Force is the best videogame weapon ever devised, and deserves the top spot in my list.

I had a number of game-less months, due to being unwell, a short while back. Those dark months were full of stagnant, useless negative thoughts where the act of gaming became tarred with the same negativity brush, as all my other worldly enjoyments have had to endure.

Thankfully this time has been and gone, leaving a few scars but nothing that I hope will be long lasting. And so I have much gaming to catch up on!

New titles played

How many of us got caught out by how playable Batman Arkham: Asylum turned out to be? The London-based developers, Rocksteady Studios, have shown a real love for the Batman character and his unique universe. I have yet to finish the storyline but I love how more of the standalone challenge modes are unlocked as the player progresses through the main game. I’m sure to play through this game at least twice which I rarely feel like doing with most games I complete.

Wolfenstein just feels too old. There’s no fresh feel to either story or action and am disappointed by the return that this game gives from the effort and time put in by the player. Once through this title is more than enough!

Too early to really have that much to say about Section 8 but am halfway through the short single-player mode which is very much a gear to the multiplayer action. Very solid, if unremarkable, so far.

Retro

My retro collection of games is starting to multiple at a steady rate. I have recently added Mass Effect to the ranks, as well as Dead Space(360) and Resistance 2 with Halo 3 about to join up too.

Am kicking about in the fifth chapter of Dead Space and have to agree that its gameplay of not over-using cut scenes, adds to the horror and scare factors of the title. I have jumped so many times through these early chapters. This is something that Resident Evil 5 failed to live up to – the lumbering AI never made me jump, sure but the overuse of cut scenes to try and add extra atmosphere just diluted the scare factor, overall.

Future gaming

Early next week, Halo ODST will take over my gaming time – unless of course, it turns out to be a turkey. Something I doubt that Bungie could ever be forced into making…

I do also have Halo 3 to play through, for the first time, and will try and balance my time between both these titles. This will be a nice way for me to see how both games stand up to each other – as both use the same game engine.

Die Neuauflage von The Force Unleashed trägt den Titel “Ultimate Sith Edition”. Neben XBOX360 und PS3 erscheint diese Edition auch für Windows PCs und für Macs (die MAC Version erscheint möglicherweise einen Monat später wenn man Amazon.co.uk glauben schenken darf) .

Übrigens können PS3 User ab sofort Trophäen sammeln. Dazu muss man die Speicherdatei des Spiels löschen um die Trophyjagd von Anfang zu starten.  Auch hier wundere ich mich über Trophies die eigentlich nichts im Spiel zu suchen haben: Laut LucasArts sollte nämlich die Ultimative Sith Edition den Jedi Temple enthalten, die Tatooine Mission und exklusiv nur auf der Disc: Die Hoth Mission. Warum sind dann die Trophies zur Hoth Mission ebenfalls auf der Ursprungs-Disc enthalten? Kommt also doch ein neues DLC auf uns zu? Werden die neuen Missionen auf der USE wie sonst auch im Hauptmenü anwählbar sein oder werden die Maps fest im Spielverlauf enthalten sein? Fragen über Fragen, ich hoffe diese bald hier beantworten zu können!

No wonder people don’t mess with the PS3 all like that, they barely got any games worth playing.

     For those of us who have played many of the Star Wars games that have come out over the years over many consoles, there have been very few Star Wars games that achieve greatness. Star Wars the Force Unleashed attempts to reach that plateau of greatness, but fails on a few points. The Force Unleashed is not a bad game, but is missing a certain polish with the camera angles and the overall balance between the player and the enemies that prevents the player from achieving the satisfaction of being one of the most powerful wielders of the Force. The overall story consists of the player known as Starkiller is taken in as Darth Vader’s apprentice to overthrow the emperor and through numerous plot twists is allowed one of two possible endings with one continuing on to an expansion pack and the other being the canon ending.

Graphic and sound:

Star Wars the Force Unleashed has average graphics for a next generation game. The game varies the environment by placing the player in different exotic locales, which is a nice switch from some of the other previous games that focused on the same boring locales and repetitious textures. The character animations and ragdoll physics are enjoyable when launching storm troopers into the air and into objects. The physics when grabbing and throwing items is mostly accurate, but can become frustrating at times when the wrong item or no item is selected in the heat of battle. The other minor complaint is that when crushing doors, they all crush in the same manner, which takes away from the realism and immersion. The sound effects are excellent as are the voiceovers of Starkiller and Darth Vader. This is a game that needs to be played in surround sound to truly experience the audio.

Gameplay and controls:

The Star Wars the Force Unleashed gameplay is based on a 3^rd person perspective camera with free range of motion to rotate the view completely around the player. The player has abilities such as Force lightning, Force push, Force grip, and use of the lightsaber. The Havok physics engine creates an entertaining environment in which to launch objects and enemies everywhere. The problem with the game is the balance between enemies and the player. As the player gets stronger, so do the enemies, which creates an environment where the player never feels as they have become a truly powerful wielder of the Force. By the end of the game, the player should be as powerful as Darth Vader and instead they have approximately the same strength as in the beginning of the game as an apprentice.

Overall thoughts:

Star Wars the Force Unleashed is a decent game, but the balance issues make the player feel as if nothing was accomplished and the character is just as weak as in the beginning of the game. The game looks great and sounds great, but I would definitely just rent it rather than add it to any collection as it is a flawed game in a series that should have been perfected by now.

Si hay algo bueno de STAR WARS (y de eso YO si sé) es que no hay nada mejor que su “Universo Expandido” para mantenernos a nosotros los fans contentos. Cuando hace más de un año LucasArts anunció STAR WARS: The Force Unleashed (SWTFU), el geek en mi empezó a gritar de emoción como una niña (¡LOL! OK, no pa’ tanto), ya que el “HYPE” indicaba que este juego sería tan grande como Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire. De todos modos el juego salió y no impresionó a la prensa como se esperaba, otorgándole opiniones mixtas. Personalmente (siendo un fanático de Star Wars a ciegas) a mi me gustó pero lamentablemente una vez lo terminé no sentí motivación para regresar a este juego ya que 1. El contenido adicional (DLC) no me interesaba y 2. No tenía Trofeos.

Antes esto era posible solo con figuras de acción.

Pero la FUERZA esta con nosotros mis Padawans, LucasArts hace un par de semanas anunció que a casi un año después del lanzamiento de SWTFU re-lanzará el juego bajo el subtítulo: Ultimate Sith Editon (USE). Esta edición especial contendrá un historia no-canónica donde continúas en los pasos del Sith. En esta historia bajo el tema ” ¿Qué tal si el lado oscuro hubiera ganado?”, Starkiller toma la posición de Darth Vader al lado del Emperador Palpatine y continúa la caza de el resto de los Jedis, entre estos Obi-Wan Kenobi y Luke Skywalker. USE nos lleva a nuevos locales incluyendo Coruscant, Hoth y Tatooine y por lo que hemos visto, Starkiller tiene un par de nuevos trucos bajo su manga. Otro anuncio relacionado con USE es la integración de trofeos tanto para USE como para SWTFU, lo cual me tiene muy contento por que por fin tengo excusa para re-visitar este juego.

LucasArts confirmó que el juego estará disponible en formato físico que contendrá SWTFU y USE al igual que en formato digital para descarga. Mientras se escribía esta noticia no se había confirmado todavía precio ni fecha de lanzamiento concreta, pero asumimos que será pronto. Estén pendientes a PSNPR.com para más detalles.

Bueno como ya dije en el post pasado de TRON, estoy un poco fuera de contacto de las noticias de la San Diego Comic-Con, esta vez el blog de playstation3 PRESSTHEPSBUTTON me recibió con una gran noticia.

En las fiestas del 2009, osease, Navidad, saldrá un DLC para el juego Star Wars: The Force Unleashed.

Este DLC llamado Ultimate Sith toma la muy original idea de continuar la saga a partir del final obscuro no canónico del juego. Si ya jugaste el juego sabes bien de cual se trata y si no lo has jugado pues ya te fregaste. En este final derrotas a Lord Vader y tomas su lugar a lado del Emperador. Ahora la saga continúa adentrándose hacia Ep IV y V  para enfrentar a personajes clásicos de la gran Trilogía. Para mi suena muuuuuy emocionante.

Básicamente lo que viene es la opción de un DLC que complementa el que ya había de Coruscant y te manda a Tatooine. Donde encontrarás otros personajes para derrotar.

La otra opción será comprar el juego Ultimate Edition donde aparte de estos niveles habrá un nivel en Hoth donde encontrarás a Luke.

No estoy seguro de que quiera comprar un juego entero que ya tengo solo para tener acceso a un nivel más, además seguramente ese nivel tarde o temprano saldrá como DLC en las redes de las consolas. pero la idea en general de como se adentraron más en la historia me parece muy buena.

Solo espero que arreglen los glitches que tenía el juego que no me permitieron acabar algunos achievementes y que trababa el juego en algunos momentos.
