My wife, Tina, our son, Gabby and I are just like most Pinoys who love eating and eating in between meals.   Whenever at home, particularly during weekends, we usually have morning light meal few hours after breakfast or more likely before lunch. Same thing goes in the afternoon; a snack is always perfect as a prelude to dinner.   But unlike others, we oftenly skip midnight snacks for the fear of taxing our pancreas too much that might lead to its rupture during sleep; now that’s another topic.

Merienda or midday meal is one of Spain’s legacies to Pinoys that I am thankful for, aren’t you also?

Here are some of the yummies we enjoy during merienda.

I don’t know about you, but Gabby and I just love it when Tina fries fish balls and serves it hot off the pan with vinegar+soy sauce+onions!    We prefer only fish balls cooked at home rather than those sold in streets.  And you?

Other than chips ahoy, oreo, or the locally made m.y.san buttercookies, lady fingers or broas (I love broas!), prima and marie (which reminds me of my childhood), I and my family also enjoy munching these cookies…

Sometimes, we have fruits during snack time and nothing compares to sweet and plump bunch of lanzones which happens to be in season until now.  Do you like lanzones too?

I usually grab two large orders of  Khaleb Shawarma for Tina and me as our merienda before we go grocery shopping.

We also like dimsum! Among our favorites are shrimp cheong fan and shrimp dumpling a.k.a. hakao!

And who would say no to pizza for merienda ?

or to either venti of frappucino, iced macchiato or any hot blends from Starbucks Coffee and pastries or a slice of cake perhaps…

Our latest to-go purchase was done just yesterday afternoon, soon after Tina and Gabby tagged along with me as I went to my dentist in Marikina, we spotted a carinderia that sells freshly cooked rice cakes…

Nevermind if it’s cheaply priced at PhP 25 per bibingka and at PhP 20 per order of puto-bumbong;  regardless whether these two are far from Ferino’s or Via Mare’s or even from Kamayan’s, what was important yesterday was the fact that we enjoyed our first bites at these Holiday season favorites.  If only we have muscovado, everything could have been almost perfect with Anchor butter and those coconut shavings.  

Tastes, smells and feels like Christmas already!   Aren’t you excited ?

Let me start off by saying that I am a coffee type of girl, and I absolutely LOVE Starbucks! It makes me a better person…it really does. A grande iced coffee is what I get every time, but around this time of year I usually make the switch over to hot coffee…well, because if it’s below 70 degrees outside I am pretty much freezing. Must be the Florida in me:) Anyway, so I went to Starbucks this morning with every intent of getting the usual, but the lovely barista asked if I wanted to try the new Caramel Brulee Latte, which I have never had. So, I accepted. And it was the best thing ever! It was so DELISH! And I felt that it was worth noting, because it’s little things in life that count for something. It’s the little things that make me so excited. So, if you’re a strictly coffee type of person, or you stay true to your Vanilla Lattes…you should definitely venture out and try the Caramel Brulee Latte. It just might make your day!

Hello World. Welcome back!

So I’m sorry there isn’t a picture up today with this blog. I guess I could have posted an older picture to represent me and how my mood was today, but I’ll try to post pictures from here on out. Ok!

I’m drinking Arizona Iced Tea (Lemon) and it’s so cold and TASTY right now. I love this tea! I’m actually a big tea guy. Hot teas and cold teas…I love them all. I can’t stand hot coffee (terrible childhood story behind my hate for it) but I LOVE STARBUCKS cold coffee drinks. Is that even possible to dislike hot coffee and like cold? STARBUCKS! Yeah, I could so go for hot chocolate right now…maybe tomorrow morning (yes, that sounds like a plan).

So back to this blog…sorry I spaced out on tea and coffee. I played in my Men’s Monday night Basketball League tonight and let’s just say that…I SUCKED! I only had 7 points and like 2 rebounds. At the young age of 27, I definitely feel my body getting slightly slower and fatigued a lot easier. This is just my body telling me to ”HIT THE GYM LOSER!” I’ve focused on beefing up, but have limited the cardio…maybe I need to add that component to my routine then (Duh!)

I was on the train yesterday morning traveling to university for my postgrad course and was having my usual cup of Caffe Nero Americano.  On the cup it stated something I hadn’t noticed before – that Caffee Nero has been voted the No.1 coffee house in the UK for the 6th year running!  So beating Starbucks and Costa!  Wow I’m am pleased!!!

“Congratulations and Mabuhay to Manny Pacquiao! You made us all proud!” – Hon. US Ambassador to the Philippines Kristie Kenney on a local TV news comment about the boxer’s win against Puerto Rican, Miguel Cotto. 

Few hours before she made that statement in Greenbelt, Makati City where she was reported to watched  Pacman’s another record-breaking success yesterday, Sunday, 15 November, we had a wonderful time of casually meeting the Ambassador and this was our starstruck moment with her… 

My wife, Tina and our 5-year-old son, Gabby and I heard mass at Sto. Niño de Paz Chapel in Greenbelt Park in Makati yesterday morning. After the Holy Mass, we headed straight to Starbucks Coffee in Greenbelt 3 to eat breakfast. 

While sipping our drinks and munching on Starbucks yummies, Tina immediately spotted the Honorable Ambassador who came to coffee shop and  just like any common individual and very unlikely of other local celebrities and politicians, she went to queue for her order. 

It was already our second time to see her up close;  the first was few weeks ago at HAAGEN-DAZS BRANCH OPENING in Robinson’s Place, Manila where I was fortunately invited to cover the event for my blog.  She was fully guarded then as expected but still, I managed to get good photos of her during the ceremonial ribbon cutting for that new store.  Seeing her again in person, barely unguarded proved to us that she’s one of those down-to-earth diplomatic representatives. 

While she was waiting for her turn at the counter, I didn’t waste time of greeting her and asked if I can take a photo of her with my son.  In a heartbeat, she smiled and politely obliged to my humble request.  I was quietly jumping for joy when she even bent her knees and put her hands over my son’s shoulder for the shot.  

Tina, who was seated at our table and I were really starstruck!  Had Gabby knew her contributions to our country beyond politics, my son probably had smiled better wider than he did.  

After I clicked the cam, I thanked the Ambassador and shook her hand with utmost gratitude.    The moment was really awesome!

To Hon. Ambassador Kristie Kenney, thank you so much for such remarkable gesture.  For some it may be petty, but for us, Gabby’s simple photo-op with you was really one for the blog  books.  Maraming Salamat po!

I had Starbucks’ Turkey Sandwich, PhP 130+,    while Tina’s choice was Starbucks’ Sausage roll, PhP 75+ for breakfast.

We had a long but fun day and I’ll share it with you bit by bit. 

It was indeed another wonderful Sunday morning for us. What a way to start a new week!

It’s already official –that NO amount of typhoons can ever stop Pinoys in celebrating Christmas!

Contrary to popular belief it did not take me twenty days to decide what I thought of Starbucks new Via Instant Coffee — I knew what I thought the second I tasted it! — but it did take me that long to find time to blog again with the wee one taking up almost all of my waking hours, so, many apologies. The truth is, I’ve missed you guys, probably a whole lot more than you missed me (ha!) but, in any case, it’s very good to be back.

And now, at long last I can tell you that the new Via Ready Brew is absolutely fantastic. I was so shocked at how good it was that I literally failed my taste test.

Seriously. I made such a face when I found out I’d guessed wrong that the barista actually laughed out loud. It was hilarious and I must say, completely surprising. Who would think instant coffee could taste exactly like brewed? Amazing.

I can’t vouch for the Colombian, but the Italian I had was so good that I actually bought a three pack to take home. And next time we go anywhere, you can bet your ass that a couple dozen of those cute little packages will be stashed somewhere in our Vue! Add some hot water at a gas station, stir, and I can drive all night, baby! Que viva la Via!

I’m not a coffee lover but I do go to the Starbucks in Japan sometimes to have a cup of Chai Latte. It reminds me of  the ”teh” we have at the mamak stall in Malaysia.

스타벅스 커피 (Su-ta-bok-su ko-pi)  is the Korean name for Starbucks Coffee. I think they have done a good job in incorporating the original Starbucks typography into Korean hangul character. I wonder if the Starbucks in Taiwan or other countries does the same thing!?

커피 (ko pi) means Coffee.  btw. Coffee is “kopi” in Bahasa Malaysia. (Malaysia’s national language) It sounds the same actually.

Escribo este post desde la mesa de trabajo de uno de los Starbucks que han ido apareciendo en Guadalajara en los últimos años.

Al entrar, lo primero que percibo es el aislamiento térmico y acústico del lugar; afuera, los ruidos del tráfico y el calor son algo estresantes, sin embargo al entrar al local, todo desaparece y sólo se escucha por las discretas bocinas, la voz  y guitarra de una joven extremadamente melodiosa, con el volumen exacto para permitirte tener una plática, llevar a cabo una llamada telefónica o incluso sentarte a leer o escribir sin ser molestado.  La temperatura, es increíblemente placentera…. el local no esta helado con en muchos otros lugares, sin embargo lo suficientemente fresco para ser agradable y querer tomar una bebida caliente.

Pido mi café, mismo que Martha*, la linda chica del mostrador o “barista”, ya conoce y repite con una agradable sonrisa en los labios.

- Un Ventti-Light-Latte a 120° y un Panini Clásico verdad Raul?

¿Cómo? La magia se rompe inmediatamente ! Ventti ? 120° ? PANINI ?… Recuerdo que estoy en Starbucks… la cadena mundial de casas de café más grande del mundo !

Qué pasó con el romantisismo del Café. La parte artesanal, la calidad, la tradición ! Starbucks ! ¿ es en serio ? La música (que ahora es una agradable melodía Bossa Nova) no es más que el resultado de horas de estudios y análisis mercadotécnico diseñado para que me guste. Increíble, los letreros “informales” hechos con tiza, son falsos… impresos ! la decoración, todo parece estudiado… demasiado agradable para ser natural… es una corporación al fin y al cabo ! Además que son estos nombres ! Caramel Macciato ? Cinnamon Dolce Crème ? Peppermint Mocha Twist ?

… y los tamaños ! Grande, Ventti, Alto ? cuál es cuál ? que tienen de malo los tradicionales chico-mediano-grande !

Estoy en esta confusión cuando Martha me entregan mi panini clásico (calientito, partido por la mitad, con el queso fundido y el pan levemente tostadito) justo a la mitad de mi confusión y creciente odio… le doy una mordida… mmmmmmmmmm !

Es sencillo: queso perfectamente fundido, jamón y un pan que no es Ciabatta , ni bolillo ni nada que se le parezca.  Sin embargo, todo se mezcla perfectamente. Dista mucho del panino italiano, sin embargo, este tiene algo diferente y a la vez …. delicioso.

El café esta a la temperatura ideal (120°F)  así que no hay necesidad de echarle hielos ni mucho menos (Hielos al Café?).

Ventti - Latte - 120°

Me siento y me conecto a la red inalámbrica gratuita…como voy a usar la computadora, me siento en la mesa de trabajo y no en los sillones, 8 sillas, luz, conección para la computadora convenientemente situada, luz natural… todo excelente.

El café esta realmente bueno … en sabor, temperatura, todo. Para este momento… se escucha algo de Cold Play en las bocinas que me permite trabajar (y bueno, escribir esta nota). En cuanto termine de mandar unos correos y publique esta nota, saldré del Starbucks. Molesto por ser lo suficientemente predecible para que alguien en Seattle elija las canciones que debe de poner así como la temperatura a la que me gusta trabajar y escribir…

Molesto porque no hay un lugar en Guadalajara donde me pueda retirar a trabajar convenientemente cerca, o los que haya, tengan equipales (pésimos para trabajar), red inestable, o peor aún, no los equipen con enchufes eléctricos para mi computadora.

Molesto porque todo esto me obliga a regresar a Starbucks la “corporación gringa que conquista el mundo”… sin embargo me iré tomando un trago de mi Ventti-Light-Latte-120° reafirmando que Starbucks lo hace muy bien…  y que probablemente, a pesar de todo lo anterior … regresaré.

The Quiz

Illinois is often known as a free state. However parts of the state, by which I mean some counties, voted to succeed from the Union in the Civil War. The southern part of the state was a relative hot bed of Confederate sympathy. Prior to the Civil War, the interests of slave holders was recognized by a key law granting “Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude shall hereafter be introduced into this state otherwise than for the punishment of crimes.” Where did this law appear?

Last week: We forget that Illinois played a key role in the battle for the Mississippi River, with units fighting hard throughout the war. I listed six civil war units last week, all of them real. Company G, Berdan’s US Sharpshooters was recruited, for the most part, from Wisconsin. The remaining units were recruited in Illinois.

And I apologize for that! I have been so busy with shoots and traveling I haven’t had much time to update the good old blog. I have a TON of new photos coming so be sure to check back soon for them.

I had the opportunity to meet up with a few other local OpLove photographers a few weeks ago. I am so happy I was able to make it! I loved meeting new photographers and love being able to chat about the “business” of photography. We only had time for about an hour meeting but I think we could have all sat there and chatted for hours. I hope we are able to get together again soon! Below is a lovely shot of my Shaken Black Iced Tea, I am so not a coffee drinker.

Also, see that new logo up there? Well, things will be changing again, I know I’m horrible about it, in November. My domain name for my website will expire and I want to move things to just a blog. I need a new look, so what do you think? Any advice?

Here’s a picture of an advert running in national press in the UK. Costa Coffee are communicating that their coffee is better than Starbucks. This is very true in my opinion, but are Costa the best? No, Caffe Nero is, and that is what I am drinking right now!
