Immersion is one of the greatest goals every game tries to achieve. It is more obvious in what I call character based games. When you play Gears of War, you feel you are in Marcus Fenix’s shoes. When you play MGS4 you feel the drama of the dying hero as if it were your own. In Modern Warfare 2, every drop of blood on the screen makes you worry and get cover.

But it is also true for impersonal games; that is, the ones whose focus is not on characters. It is easier to notice it when I replace the word immersion for involvement. When playing Lumines or Tower Bloxx for example, you feel involved in the game: frustrated after a mistake, excited when a new level is reached, defiant when the score of a friend is beaten. Note impersonal and casual games are not the same thing at all. Chess is impersonal as are, heroes aside, most RTSs: replace one Zealot for another, there’s no difference at all. All sports games are like that too, with the exception of modes like EA’s Be A Pro.

Now, there’s a multitude of factors that contribute to how immersive a game is. I recently mentioned one talking about Demon’s Souls: challenge. A challenged player is an involved player. There’s also the connection between player and game at the fundamental design level: some people like puzzles, some like shooters. I will not get in the merits of each one, but if you like a type of game, you will be more into it. Style also plays a big role: when graphics and sound suit the game and your mood, they also improve immersion. In fact, I would say immersion is the reason behind most graphical updates in the games industry. From polygon count and texture size to shaders, in the search for immersion graphics chips are always evolving to provide better and more artistic or realistic visuals.

From here we get to the other facet of immersion I want to talk about: controls. No matter what game you are playing, connecting to it requires controlling it without trouble. You only get into Tetris when you learn how to move and rotate the pieces the way you want, you only appreciate Geometry Wars after getting used to moving the ship with the analog stick, you only feel like Sam Fisher when pulling all his moves gets easy, you only enjoy Fifa 10 when passing, dribbling and shooting becomes second nature.

Over the years, games became more and more complex. And with game complexity came complex controls. The Atari had 1 button. The NES had 2. The Genesis had 3. In the current generation, both PS3 and 360 have 4 face buttons, 2 shoulder buttons, 2 shoulder triggers and 2 clickable analog sticks. And I am not counting dpads, select and start buttons.

Most gamers are used to it. Hell, controllers could have more buttons and that wouldn’t be a problem, not to me. But with the last generation of consoles, we saw a big move in the opposite direction coming from Nintendo. The Wii has less buttons and makes up for it trying to detect something everybody knows how to do: move and point. When I first heard about it, I was very interested, both as a gamer and as a robotic perception researcher. To me, that meant games would become even more immersive, shooters would feel even more realistic.

It is curious that while it is true the Wii controllers increased immersion, that change did not affect most hardcore games. Nintendo correctly (from a business perspective) focused on using the more approachable controls to bring a new crowd to the video games era. And it worked very well for them.

Nintendo’s approach was so right that others have been following it ever since. After the success of the Wii, many game platforms started exploring new and more natural input methods. Touch screens and accelerometers became very popular.

But we will soon reach a new apex. Something I personally have been waiting for since I started studying computer vision. And Microsoft is the one about to pull it off: no controls. No buttons at all. If you haven’t heard of Project Natal before, go check it out. It is awesome.

The idea of a vision system in games is not new, the PS2 had the EyeToy. But there were many technical limitations: from sensor capability (one still eye won’t give proper perception of depth for example) to processing power, as robust computer vision algorithms require a whole lot of processing. Project Natal solves these problems in a very interesting way: a single camera is used for “texture” detection. And instead of stereo vision, they achieve 3D perception with a depth sensor. As for the processing power, Project Natal’s device features a custom processor, which is certainly there to reduce the load on the 360 hardware.

Like Nintendo did, Project Natal’s first efforts will probably aim the casual market and bring more gamers to the table. But that does not change the fact that immersion in video games will take a big leap. Imagine playing Lumines by grabbing the blocks and rotating them with your hands. Or simply using your empty hands to select your playlist. Wouldn’t it be cool? Heck, in Minority Report Tom Cruise needed cool glowing gloves to do what we are about to get with our bare hands. The future is here, my friends.

Anyway, as the number of buttons get close to the limit, after all we only have 10 fingers, new input methods are here to stay. I don’t have a Wii. But I will need a bigger living room when Project Natal becomes available.

Dann fangen wir gleich mal mit den DVD Einkäufen an.

• Best of Power Ranger Box

Eine wirklich sehr nette Box. Mit wirklich sehr guten Folgen. Habe auch wieder richtig Lust auf Power Ranger bekommen. Wird Zeit das ich mir die zweite Staffel endlich mal Kaufe.

• Godzilla Final Wars Box

Godzilla Final Wars hatte ich mir ja neulich noch angesehen. Und da mir der Film ja recht gut gefallen hat habe ich mir auch gleich die DVD dazu gekauft. Doch bei dieser Box liegt auch noch der aller erste Godzilla dabei in Versionen. Einmal das Japanische Original und dann noch die Amerikanische und Deutsche Version. Bin mal gespannt wo da so die Unterschiede liegen.

Nachdem ich mir ja erst kürzlich die ersten Star Trek Filme auf DVD gekauft habe. Dachte ich mir mache ich das bei Star Wars doch auch mal. Ich habe mir aber nur Episode 4-6 geholt. Da ich die viel besser finde als Episode 1-3. Was mich an Episode 1-3 stört? Nun zum einen gibt es in Episode 1-3 viel weniger Weltraumschlachten als in Episode 4-6. Ausserdem finde ich, das es viel zu viele Lichtschwert Kämpfe gibt.

Nachdem die Spiele Messe in Essen ja nicht so prall war. Habe ich mir vom Rest Geld die erste Gundam 00 Box gekauft. Eine wirklich sehr tolle Box mit sehr tollen Extras. Habe mir die DVDs auch schon angesehen. Und beim zweiten mal gucken macht die Serie sogar noch viel mehr Spaß. Nur die Deutsche Synchro hat mir leider so gar nicht gefallen.

Ich hoffe das beez auch so schnell wie möglich die zweite Staffel nach Deutschland bringt. Denn die wird dann erst richtig interessant.

• Gundam Wing Vol. 1-4 & 7-9

Und weiter geht es mit Gundam auf DVD. Irgendwie bin ich zur Zeit wieder richtig im Gundam Fieber. Eigentlich wollte ich mir ja die Komplette Serie auf DVD Kaufen, aber leider hatten sie nicht mehr alle Vol. vorrätig. Immerhin kann ich mir die Serie ja schon mal bis Vol. 4 ansehen. Ich war sogar richtig überrascht als ich gesehen habe das die DVDs sogar die Japanische Tonspur besitzen. Ich ging immer davon aus das da nur die Deutsch Tonspur drauf sei. Naja umso besser so kann ich mir die Serie auch mal auf Japanisch ansehen.

• Wedding Peach Vol. 7-9

Auch bei Nipponart gekauft Wedding Peach Vol. 7-9. Und noch eine Serie zum Sammeln. Aber Wedding Peach wollte ich mir eh noch auf DVD holen. Nur habe ich hier mit ziemlich ungünstigen Vol. angefangen wie ich finde.

• Die Melancholie der Haruhi Suzumiya Vol. 2-4
• Shop: Anime-Versand
• Preis: ca. 20 Euro pro DVD

Da bei Anime-Versand die Haruhi DVDs im Angebot sind habe ich sofort zugeschlagen. Da ich die Serie endlich komplett haben wollte. Habe mir die DVDs auch schon angesehen. Und auch beim dritten mal gucken macht die Serie immer noch Spaß. Vor allen da ich die Serie zum ersten mal in der richtigen reihen folge geguckt habe.

Aber ich kann schon verstehen warum sich viele Fans über die DVDs aufregen. Ich wollte die Serie zuerst auf meinen DVD Player ansehen. Doch nach ein paar Minuten hatte ich immer merkwürdige verpixlugen im Bild besonders wenn der Übergang von einer Szene zur anderen stattfand. Dann als ich die DVD in meinen DVD Recorder eingelegt habe hatte ich diesen Fehler nicht. Das ist auch die erste DVD bei der mein DVD Player versagt. Ansonsten ist das Gerät echt Top.

Darüber hinaus stört mich das DVD Menü ungemein. Egal auf was man klickt man 4-5 Sekunden warten bis alle Bilder geladen sind. Das kann nach einer weile schon recht Nerv tötend sein. Aber ich will mich ja nicht zu viel darüber aufregen. Das haben andere ja schon zu genüge getan.

• Phantom The Animation

Auch bei Anime-Versand gekauft Phantom The Animation. Eigentlich hatte ich ja gedacht das mir der Anime gut gefallen wird. Eine kurzhaarige Profi Killerin? Was man will man mehr habe ich mir gedacht. Doch leider hat mir dieser Anime so gar nicht gefallen. Das fängt bei Charakteren an geht hin zur Story und hört bei den Zeichnungen auf. Es passt einfach nix zusammen. Die Charaktere sind einfach langweilig in Szene gesetzt genau wie die Story und beide haben genau so wenig Tiefgang. Selbst die Brutalität ließ zu wünschen übrig.

Aber was will man von einer 3 Teiligen OVA erwarten? Vielleicht ist die TV Serie ja besser? Die Zeichnungen scheinen es jedenfalls schon mal zu sein.

Endlich GTO Komplett! Endlich kann ich mir die Serien zu Ende ansehen. Werde ich jetzt in den nächsten Tagen auch ganz bestimmt machen.

Auch bei amazon im Angebot gewesen. Vol. 5 von Card Captor Sakura habe mir die DVD auch schon angesehen. Und wie die DVDs davor auch schon hat mir diese auch sehr gut gefallen. Jetzt fehlt mir nur noch Vol. 6. Das ist dann leider auch schon die letzte DVD.

• Iczer One & Dark Side Blues DVD

Endlich Iczer One auf DVD! Ich besitze Iczer One ja Bereits auf VHS. Aber die DVD davon wollte ich auch immer haben. Einfach auch aus dem Grund das ich gar keinen VHS Rekorder mehr habe. Die DVD habe ich mir auch schon angesehen. Und Iczer One ist einfach super gemacht. Ich liebe diese alten Anime einfach. Vor allen sind die älteren Anime meistens Detail getreuer als die ganzen neuen Heut zu Tage.

Dark Side Blue hat mir aber leider gar nicht gefallen. Wieder eine kurze OVA Serie wo man, nachdem man sie gesehen hat, mehr fragen als antworten hat.

• Key the Metal Idol Vol. 5

Auch bei ebay habe ich mal wieder das ein oder andere Schnäppchen gemacht.

Wobei das Kaufen und Verkaufen bei ebay immer weniger Spaß macht. Neuerdings scheint man bei ebay sogar nicht mal mehr die Versandkosten angeben zu dürfen. Besonders im Bereich DVDs. Man macht sowieso schon keinen Gewinn mehr wenn man was ebay Verkauft. (Angebotsgebühren usw…) Und jetzt soll ich auch noch selber für den Versand aufkommen? Da kann ich die Sachen ja gleich Verschenken. Klar kann man jetzt sagen man gibt an “Nur Abholung” und die Versandkosten schreibt man dann in die Beschreibung dazu. Aber wer liest das schon? Ich sehe da jetzt schon eine welle an Negativer und Neutraler Bewertungen auf uns zu kommen.

Wie dem auch sei. Von Key the Metal Idol fehlt mir jetzt nur noch Vol. 3 damit ich mir die Serie endlich Komplett ansehen kann.

Auch eine Maya Ibuki Figur habe ich mir bei ebay mal wieder gekauft. ca. 2 Euro habe ich mir das Schmuckstück kosten lassen. Und somit hätte ich auch diese Figur jetzt 2 mal.

Batman und Superman gegen Sub Zero? Das musste ich sehen. Und da habe ich mir einfach mal kurzer Hand das Spiel gekauft.

Habe das Spiel schon ein paar Gespielt und es macht schon Spaß. Vor allem ist es nicht so schwer wie Street Fighter 4. Auch die Erfolge sind etwas großzügiger verteilt.

Nachdem mir der erste Teil ja schon sehr gut gefallen hat. Musste ich mir den 2 Teil natürlich auch Kaufen. Vor allen da man diesmal auch mit den Gundams aus Gundam Seed in die Schlacht ziehen kann.

Nur die Erfolge sind im 2 Teil wesentlich Zeit Intensiver als beim ersten Teil.

Das Spiel wollte ich auch schon seit langem haben. Bin aber noch nicht dazu gekommen es zu Spielen.

So das war es dann auch mit den Einkäufen im November. Mal sehen ob ich mir im Dezember genau so viel Kaufen werden. Oder sogar noch mehr? Wir werden sehen.

Jetzt gehe ich aber erst mal ein paar folgen Gundam Wing gucken. Nächste Woche gibt es dann wieder einen normalen Wochenrückblick.

Microsoft denies the Apocalyptic move over Xbox Live.

Microsoft’s XBOX Live last action sent a huge tremor all over the world. Apparently a huge amount of Xbox Live enthusiasts ended up getting their accounts banned from the said network. The said banning was under the move “To eliminate piracy”. Although the story still goes on but this time around, Microsoft denies that such incident occured. Entirely, GM Marc Whitten made the statement “I cannot explain to you why people would think it was a million people. It wasn’t a million people”. SO yeah i guess in total it may never be a million, just 999,999 users.

Blizzard all time favorite game, STARCRAFT which is getting a sequel coming this first quarter of 2010 known as Starcraft II recently had it’s a site update. Profu zice câte ceva despre Max Weber şi de ce oamenii se supun indiferent de circumstanţe, şi sunt de acord cu chestia asta, dar se pare că cei de la MetroGrivei nu prea, de aceea se răzvrătesc împotriva hoţilor şi mincinoşilor care le fură banii… Nenorociţii!

Păi bine mă, da o amărâtă de casieriţă d’asta d’a voastră câştigă mai bine decât un amărât de profesor… Păi cum vine asta?

Mă rog, nu de asta sunt eu supărat, sunt supărat că astăzi am cursuri de la 8 jumate până la 8 jumate şi nu am nici un chef să stau la ele. Cu atât mai puţin probabil oamenii care nu ştiu altă rută de a ajunge la locurile necesare dezvoltării societăţii decât cele oferite de metrogrivei.

Pe lângă asta încerc să umplu partea goală a paharului şi zic că am un avantaj în privinţa asta, faptul că orăşelul Măgurelian nu este dependent de legătura cu metroul aşa că pe mine nu m-a afectat de loc greva asta, şi abia acum realizez că nu am nici un fundament în a scrie acest articol. Aşa că vă las să vă blestemaţi zilele în aglomeraţia excesivă bucureşteană că io mă bag la StarCraft pe net. Cius!

Dla wszystkich zainteresowanych zamieszczamy dotychczasowe wyniki spotkań, które można było obstawić w serwisie Betsson.com. Nie spotkaliśmy się z zaskoczeniami, chociaż niektórzy z pewnością uznali za nie wygraną YawSa ze Sky’em. Мхм, въпреки че бетата щеше да се появи “след няколко седмици” още през септември, се оказа че въобще няма да я помиришем през 2009

Chris Sigaty e потвърдил, че бетата е отложена за 2010 г. Крис е направил това изявление по време на презентация на руското гейм експо IgroMir (според Goha.ru и фен сайта StarCraft Legacy).

Последните новини от Blizzard са, че играта или по точно първата част “Wings of Liberty” ще се появи през Q2 2010 (т.е. между Април и Юни), а по пътя на логиката трябва да очакваме бетата през Q1… Оффф.

Still listening to Fireflies and The Saltwater Room by Owl City. I’m getting hungry. I wish i could play Starcraft multiplayer, but no one’s here to play with.

Prácticamente Blizzard no es capaz de desvelar ni un dato sobre la posible fecha de salida, sobre la oficial, ya que rumores hay por todas partes, incluso especulaciones que llevan inundando la red desde verano de 2009 o antes. Pero ya es hora de prever que los rumores son algo más que ello. La beta está lista y en marcha, el juego casi terminado, apenas unos retoques, ¿acaso creen que queda mucho para verlo en las tiendas?, mi respuesta es: No, claro que tendremos que esperar a 2010 y a Blizzard se le ha hechado el tiempo encima para estas navidades.

Pero la verdad,
esta primavera se ha ganado todas las papeletas.

El juego, según algunas especulaciones saldrá por unos 50-60 euros-lo normal de los nuevos juegos de Blizzard (estos ignoran la crisis), por lo que ya es hora de ir guardándolos debajo de la almohada, va faltando poco …

Mein Protoss-Berserker ist inzwischen auch wieder einen Schritt weiter gekommen, die Rüstung nimmt immer konkretere Formen an.

Noch viel zu tun gibt es bei der Haut, den Leuchteffekten, den Dreadlocks und der Base. Aber die kommenden Herbstabende werden da sicher hilfreich sein.

Igår kväll spelade robin, leif, rickard, sara och jag ett par Starcraftmatcher. Yes – det underbara gamla RTS-spelet Blizzard skapade för… +10 år sedan. Bästa ever. Men iaf… här kommer matchprotokollet från mitt håll sett.

Match 1:

Match 2 var nog min bäst spelade match ever. helt rätt timing. helt rätt byggt. helt rätt micro. Tur med ursprungliga placeringen på kartan. Det var en tung match för leif, rickard och robin. Jag njöt av spelstilen och vinsten.

Und wieder steht uns Christoph Lipsky vom Heidelberger Spieleverlag für ein langes Interview und eine ausführliche Spielevorstellung der Neuheiten zur Verfügung. Dabei konzentrieren wir uns auf den fantastischen Bereich und stellen Spiele wie Heidelbär, Rouge Trader, Battlelore-Helden-Erweiterung, Krysis, Space Alert, Vor den Toren von Loyang und das Warhammer-Invasion-Kartenspiel im ersten Teil.

Com Strip Poker III aprendi muitas coisas. Aprendi a jogar pôquer, aprendi como tornar arquivos invisíveis usando linhas de comando do DOS, aprendi a descer uma escada de madeira no meio da madrugada sem fazer barulho e descobri agora, quando reinstalei este lendário aplicativo, que quando se tem 12, 13 anos, mesmo fotos feiosas de mulheres meio feiosas podem trazer muita emoção para a sua vida.

Era uma idade de descobertas. A transgressão de ir jogar escondido por ser moleque e estar vendo foto de mulher pelada, dava um sabor especial à experiência. Talvez o grande aprendizado seja esse: a descoberta é o motor das emoções em nossas vidas.

The popular Touhou phenomenon for the week is incontestably a shadow art video for Alstromoemeria Records’s 2007 rendition of Bad Apple!!, the third stage theme from Lotus Land Story. It features mesmerizing, smoothly animated silhouettes of many characters from the series. I was saddened by its missing a certain someone, but it was a fun watch nonetheless and I think even those unfamiliar with Touhou might enjoy it.
