Dans un rapport établis par Stardock (Stardust Customer Report 2009), éditeur œuvrant dans la distribution digitale, estime la part de marché de Valve  (Steam) à 70% et leur propre entreprise (Impulse) à 10%. Selon Brad Wardell, President & CEO de Stardock, la distribution digitale représentera 25% des revenues réalisés par le lancement d’un jeu PC pour n’importe quel éditeur en 2009.

Si les chiffres sont clairement à l’avantage de Steam, c’est que non seulement, ce sont les premiers à avoir été sur le créneau mais surtout parce que l’offre Steamworks est une suite d’outil performant. Le logiciel fournit la protection du jeu contre le piratage par activation (internet ou téléphone), un système de cryptage des données, des statistiques sur les joueurs et les ventes en temps réel, un suivi des mises à jour, le chat vocal, la gestion du multijoueur.

En revanche, de son côté, selon les termes de son Président & CEO , Stardock, n’est pas en faveur d’un système de protection. A mon avis, les éditeurs n’ont pas été séduits par ce discours. Brad serait-il un peu naïf ? Rien que pour Nintendo, les pertes liées au piratage furent estimées à 770 millions d’€ en 2007, soit près d’1 milliard de $ !  D’ailleurs si quelqu’un a les chiffres pour l’année 2008, qu’il se manifeste !

My Stardock Fences got a bit screwy on several PCs and had to reinstall them. It keeps complaining that it expired on 1 Nov 2009 and is going into reduced functionality mode.

Then I saw the EULA during installation as follows:

There are 2 mistakes with the EULA.

Firstly, the Fences 1.00 CTP was not in January 2009. CNet Downloads mentions:

Secondly, what good is a EULA when you cannot even reproduce it without written permission ? A EULA is not exactly a book or a publication right ?

When i was in college, I probably had 20 or 30 nifty little programs that I used for various things on the computer. Eventually over time, most of those programs were eclipsed by, or absorbed into, the standard set of software, in some cases by Windows itself. Also, I don’t use a computer the same way I used one back in college, so some of the apps probably became less useful to me personally.

So it’s not often these days that I come across a neat little program for the computer, but a co-worker referred me to one the other day, called Fences, which is used to clean up your desktop icons. Interestingly, the makers of the software are a company named Stardock, who make another program I used to use, a Windows skinning software called Window Blinds.

Basically, you make little areas called Fences, into which you drag and drop your icons. These areas can then be named with some logical name for the grouping, such as “Games”, “Photo Editing”, or “Random Junk”. Then the areas can be moved as a group, keeping icons logically together. You can also resize the fence to be smaller, which will give it scroll bars. For example, lets say your desktop is cluttered with a bunch of text files that represent notes to yourself. You can make a group called “Notes” and drop them all in there, and then make that group small enough to see only one or two icons. Then, if you want to see the rest of your notes, you can just scroll within that group.

Another nice side effect is that you can double click on the background to hide or show your icons. So, for example, if you have a really cute picture of your daughter on the desktop that you just need to show off, you can hide all the junk. You can also decide what to hide or show, meaning you can have sort of a normal mode with some icons and an advanced mode that reveals the rest of your icons.

I found it useful, both at home and at work, and I thought you might too.

I found this interesting, especially given the recent hullabaloo over the Shadow Complex boycott. Brad Wardell, the CEO of Stardock Software and an outspoken conservative, has decided to take a stand against UPS. UPS, the package delivery service, recently decided to drop all of its advertising with Fox News. Stardock, according to Wardell’s comments on his Facebook page, does a “non-trivial amount of shipping with UPS.” Upset by the company’s decision to pull its advertising from the network, Stardock Software will now be doing all of its physical game fulfillment through FedEx.

So now we face yet another aspect of the Shadow Complex boycott issue. What’s good for the goose and so on… If liberals can boycott things that offend them, then so can conservatives. While I doubt losing Stardock’s business will result in a significant hit to UPS’ bottom line, this doesn’t strike me as a terribly healthy phenomenon. There are lots of CEOs out there, and lots of companies much bigger than Stardock and what happens when everyone needs to start signing an ideological bill of particulars before someone else will do business with you? If I have to have my voting record perused every time I go for a job, I might as well move out of California now. As lovely as I’m sure Texas is, I have no desire to live there.

To everyone’s credit, the discussion that came about as a result of Brad’s post was pretty civilized as such things go, but the gaming industry is a pretty small neighborhood. That tends to encourage civility. The rest of Red and Blue America? Not so much.

And on a completely unrelated note, if you’re at all interested in strategy games and have never played Galactic Civilizations 2, drop what you’re doing and play it now! You’ll thank me later.

My Facebook comment was taken considerably out of context. I could care less about Glenn Beck or whether someone advertises on their show or not. But UPS is boycotting the entire channel which annoyed me enough to ask my publishing director to look into whether it was true (it was) and have them look into Fed Ex which provided competitive pricing and make use of them for our uses.

This is completely and 100% true and was true when I first put up the story. This is why this story was labeled “Stardock Takes a Stand for Fox News,” NOT “Stardock Takes a Stand for Glenn Beck.” However you feel about Fox News, I wanted to make sure that Brad’s stance was clear.

CD-Action, a Polish gaming magazine / website, seemingly have a lot of copies of Sins of a Solar Empire to give away. The same publication previously gave away copies of Speedball 2: Tournament – and still appears to be.

Bargain-hunting blog SavyGamer has all the details, with the Sins of a Solar Empire key working on Impulse, and the Speedball 2: Tournament key working on Steam.

Sins of a Solar Empire, the 2008 “RT4X” (Real Time Strategy eXplore, eXpand, eXploit, and eXterminate) game from Stardock, was met with critical acclaim, as reflected in the game’s Metacritic score of 87.

On the other hand, Speedball 2: Tournament received middling reviews, averaging out at 62 on Metacritic. By French developers Kylotonn, the game has fairly low production values. I’ve played it, and for free, I guess I can’t complain.

A while ago Ars had a writeup on Stardock’s CEO saying that they think copy protection is counter-productive.  Here’s the money quote:

“The reason why we don’t put copy protection on our games isn’t because we’re nice guys. We do it because the people who actually buy games don’t like to mess with it. Our customers make the rules, not the pirates. Pirates don’t count”

It’s a pretty obvious point that’s been brought up again and again in the RIAA/MPAA quagmire.  Another word for piracy is advertising.  Depending on which study you look at, piracy has either a neutral or positive effect on sales.  The logic is pretty simple:  downloaders tend to download because their either don’t have the money to pay or because whatever it is they’re downloading isn’t available through other convenient means.  Either way, there’s no sale lost.  On the other hand, sales are often gained when the halo effect kicks in and users buy associated content based on what they’ve already seen.

In the case of software it’s usually worse because the copy protection tends to be more intrusive than a DVD’s passive CSS encryption or a CD’s Autoplay blocker (though not always).  Software that phones home not only has potential privacy implications but also becomes dependent upon the company keeping their servers running.  It enforces the legal point that you’re really just licensing software, not buying it, even when you get it on a DVD at Best Buy.  I wouldn’t get too comfortable with iTunes or Amazon either…just wait for Windows Live.

I thought… no big deal… Beta Preview anyway…

But when I tried to check for updates.

And it said…

Hmm… So what’s up ? Is there any updated version after v0.98.1970 BETA or not ?

My beef is that now is 1st Sep 2009 and NOT even near 1st November 2009, so why the reduced functionality mode ?

But you want it too look and act like windows 7? Well heres a simple guide on how to do it…

Besides the obvious reasons that Macs and PCs do pretty much the same thing (and, yes, I spend a lot of time on both types of machines, so I can say this confidently), and I always love rooting for the underdog, and I loove the moolah-friendly aspects of my Dell…one of my favorite things about my PC is the ability to customize it beyond recognition. Because let’s be 100% honest: Macs epicly win in every aspect of aesthetics, both externally and internally. PCs straight out of the box just don’t cut it for me.

So whether you are a diehard PC-user, or a Steve Jobs protege forced to work on an evil PC for work, here’s how you can make your machine a little more beautiful (for only a little bit of money)…in only five steps!

Step One: skin the hell out of that PC.

Cost: Free to try, $20 to buy
A product called Window Blinds is the best friend you could ask for. This program allows you to change every aesthetic aspect of your internal layout: taskbar, windows, status bars, and on and on. The program comes with a few default skins that are workable at best, but the real meat comes from user-built themes you can download at WinCustomize. Two of my favorites are VReady and Eminence, which is currently being used on my laptop.

Step Two: Dock it up!

Cost: Free
One of my favorite features on Macs are the sleek and easily-accessible docks. Who says you can’t have the best of all worlds? Object Dock is a program that gives you a customizable dock, with even more options than a Mac. Love it when knockoffs do this. Static sizes, magnification sizes, highlight actions, text, shortcut images, transparency, color, and dock dividers can all be adjusted individually.
I spent a little bit of time searching deviantArt, and found some great icon sets there.

Step Three: Get yourself some widgets.

Cost: Free
You might be partial to the Mac’s separate widget screen function…but if you’re like me and enjoy keeping your widgets handy, go download the Yahoo Widgets program. This program provide a vast array of widgets to choose from to enhance your functionality or beautify your digital space. My favorites are the JS Sticky Deluxe, Calendar, and Global Clock.

Step Four: Learn better ways to navigate.

Cost: Free
Like the Mac F9 feature? Your PC has a little-known similar one: Alt+Tab. Cycle through all of your open programs/windows by holding Alt, and pressing Tab to select different windows.

Step Five: Adjust your computer’s visual settings.

Cost: $50 for the product’s entire features
There are probably other ways to do this, but I use my Norton SystemWorks settings to change the sizes of some of the fonts that can’t be adjusted through the Windows Blinds program. SystemWorks, of course, does a million other things, so this is just one small feature for a great program.

Step Six: Get yourself an awesome background

Cost: Free
The background used in all these images is from InterFacelift, which is a brilliant site with tons of great imagery. If you, like me, prefer to have some inspiring natural shots as your background, also check out Desktopography. And say you can’t get enough out of a Mac’s ability to have rotating backgrounds? ANOTHER fabulous product from Stardock will do that for you too!

All in all, you can end up with a computer that, while not nicer looking than a Mac when you started, has quite a bit more ability to be customized. And while beauty is in the eye of the beholder, I’m quite happy with my final outcome.

• Fences is a free application that can help you tidy up your desktop icons, which would otherwise remain messy and disorganized – a complete eyesore. Here’s what your desktop may look like before you download, install and set up Fences:

• Once Fences is downloaded, installed and running, right click on the desktop and hold the right click button down, and drag out a box about the same size as you want your first Fence. As you drag, a blue box like this will appear:

• Release the right click button. A menu with one option will appear, and that option is to ‘Create a new Fence here’. Click that option:

• A small dialog box will appear asking you to name your first Fence. Use a name that’ll cover a range of applications. In this case, I’ve chosen ‘Office’, as this Fence will hold all my Office applications. Once you’ve chosen a suitable name just click ‘OK’ or hit the enter key. If you decide you don’t want to create a fence just click ‘Cancel’ or hit ‘Esc’.

• Now you’ve made your first Fence. The next step is to start dragging icons into it. Here, I’ve dragged in Excel, Word, PowerPoint and OneNote. They’ll automatically align themselves to an invisible grid within the Fence.

• You’ll probably agree that the above Fence is far too big for the four icons it contains. So put your mouse cursor to any edge of corner of the Fence, wait for the double-headed arrow to appear and simply click and drag the Fence’s boundaries until it’s of satisfactory size.

• Warning: if you make the Fence too small, some icons will go into hiding. To reach those hidden icons you have to scroll up and down. It’s best to get all Fences to the smallest size while allowing room for all icons to remain intact.

• Now that you know how to create and resize Fences, create as many as you want, all with relevant names, before sorting all your desktop icons into their respective categories. At this stage it could look something like this:

• I certainly don’t want my Fences covering the main part of my wallpaper, so I wanna move them around. To do this, click and drag a Fence from any blank space, including the title (if it’s on show). Either that or go into the Fences menu and choose from one of the preset layouts. (To open the Fences menu right click on the desktop and select ‘Edit Fences’.

• The colour of your Fences can be altered to suit your own personal taste. Open the Fences menu and click ‘Customize’, and in there you’re able to change the transparency, hue, brightness and saturation of Fences. Other options include fading out scrollbars when they’re out of use, outlining each Fence or showing labels only when your mouse is hovering over the related Fence. Here’s what my Customize menu looks like:

• Finally, Fences offers a neat way to save layouts, in case you get a bit zealous with swapping things about and totally screw everything up. Click ‘Tools’ in the Fences menu, and click the ‘Take Snapshot’ button. Key in a suitable name and click ‘OK’. From then on, the exact settings for that Snapshot can be restored just by clicking on it and selecting ‘Restore Snapshot’.

Whilst I do my utmost to keep the desktop on my laptop in pristine condition, the desktop on my other PC can sometimes get a build-up of shortcuts and quickly saved files. I have found a rather nice solution which can organise desktop icons into translucent mini-windows which can be easily moved, altered, and hidden at will. This solution takes the form of Stardock Fences.

The software serves two functions. The first and foremost of these is the ability to add sections to your desktop where you can group similar shortcuts. For instance, you may have shortcuts to your projects or work folders. You could make a fence for ‘Projects’, and within that you can collect all the shortcuts related to your work. The same can be repeated for all other categories that you wish to create.

The process of creating a ‘fence’ is easy – just hold the right mouse button, and drag a square. A label will then pop up which asks you if you’d like to create a new fence. Clicking it will cause a fence to fill the space you selected. You’ll then be prompted to name the fence. Finally, you can then drag shortcuts from your desktop, Start Menu, or folders into the new fence. You can remove them from the fence just as easily – simply by dragging them elsewhere. Alternatively, if you decide you want them scattered around disparately again, you can drag them back out and then delete the fence.

The other nifty feature of Fences is the ability to hide your desktop icons quickly and easily. Double-clicking on your desktop causes your icons to quickly fade out to nothing. This allows you to keep your desktop clean and simple, which helps you to look professional and avoid getting confuzzled. As soon as the boss is gone, you can double-click once more to have them appear again. You can nab this application from www.stardock.com/products/fences.

Who wants clutter on our desktop? None. But, we all do it? Right? Over time, links and files take up our desktop down to the point of covering the entire space. Isn’t it so dirty?

Time to clean up a little. Meet Fences, a new desktop customization application from Stardock. They have a good idea on helping us out clean our computer desktop.

First, the application allows us to create a Fence (space where you organize your files/links). I have managed to create my first fence by doing a right click and dragged it to form a fence and finished off by hitting the create a fence here button. Then the janitor job started with choosing a title for the fence, sort of, category. I started with System Tools and throw everything in there icons of applications that belonged to this category, and so on.

Second good part is that you can double click on any vacant area of your desktop and all the elements are automatically hidden, do it again and they will reappear. Another good extra is that you can exclude some of your fences from the auto-hide feature.

Good deal, right? And again it’s free, and the developer says, it’ll stay that way, forever. Thanks, then!
