Hooray for Maternity photography. Probably one of my favorites! There has got to be no happier time than expecting new life and getting to share those moments with those who are.

Laura and Frank E are two great people and going to be fun and awesome parents. It was a joy spending the afternoon with them capturing their portraits at Loose Park in Kansas City, MO.

Here he is, our first little one, Isaac. He was born September 7, 2010. I can’t believe he’s already two weeks old!

I shot a quick session with him 9-20-10, while I had the energy and he had the patience!

Well, all my friends at UCM are back to classes and I’m home this semester missing the action! I am due September 5 with our first child, Isaac.

This has been a busy summer of home remodeling, preparing a nursery, and doing some photography work here and there. I’ve also set up my new website with online proofing and ordering at starrphotographics.com as well as tinkered with my blog’s layout. It’s all a work in progress. I hope to be back in business by mid October. However, if I can get the surgery done in time for next Spring’s semester, I need to have my carpel tunnel syndrome fixed in both my wrists. It makes every day a challenge of doing the most simple of tasks (even sleeping), especially since it is 100x worse with the pregnancy!

Creative Photography #6: Nature Photography - Flower Study II

I continued my high key flower photos. This time I used strobes with a reflector instead of just tungsten lighting. I also chose flowers that were less than fresh. I enjoy the added textures of the wilted leaves and petals on the sunflower and others.

Editorial Photography #6: Food Photography - Dinner and Drinks

I decided to attempt some more food photography to finish off my book. I chose to cook all my own food this time, (which takes a lot longer), so that I could get things looking as fresh and styled as I needed them to be. I also chose a different lighting approach for my food. I used north window light from my kitchen windows. With their positioning, I didn’t need a reflector to bounce some fill back into the shadows. I should have tried this months ago! I really like the results and it makes it considerably easier to not have to worry about syncing a flash with my aperture set at f/1.8-2. In those situations I usually have to use the modeling light on my strobes.

The drinks offered me the most challenge. First off, I looked EVERYWHERE for dulling spray, which gives the best and most consistent results with glass and metal. I resorted to having to use spray deodorant to frost the glasses. FYI spray deodorant is a MESS to work with! Take precautions to use this outside because it goes everywhere and sticks to everything. Even after making a little spray tent like in our text book, I had quite a bit of dusting to do after using this on three glasses. It also stinks and will make you cough. It just hangs in the air. Being a hygienic product I didn’t think about these things as I would with other aerosols like spray paint. I used clear corn syrup for the water droplets. I still had to spray a bit of water on the glass to get the condensation running down the side to look correct on the iced tea. I also bought a set of acrylic ice cubes to use for the iced tea. These were a snap to work with and, in my opinion, really made a difference in getting the right look.

The white wine I used was a pinot grigio. Usually this is not a sparking wine, but this had tons of bubbles in it and I could never get the glass cleaned off from the popping bubbles! What a pain to work with! I’m sure there’s some tip for working with this.

I shot these using a Canon 100mm macro lens and ring flash. I shot several different images of each flower at different focus brackets and merged them in photoshop.

The Sonoran Desert in Arizona, just north of Phoenix. The large cacti are saguaro cacti. They grow for hundreds of years.

I back lit these with a soft box and used a reflector to bounce a little of the light back to pick up some of the details of the centers of the flowers that didn’t pick up the light being back lit.
