Would you name your daughter after a Bond girl?

Thanks to Shelby for suggesting this seasonally appropriate choice.  Our Name of the Day is Vesper.

Ian Fleming introduced James Bond in 1953’s Casino Royale and authored more than a dozen novels and short stories about the suave secret agent.  Since Fleming’s death, others have invented new perils for Commander Bond – and new romantic possibilities, as well.

But Vesper Lynd was the real deal, created by the author for Bond’s very first adventure.  Her name is a play on West Berlin.  In Casino Royale, she’s a double agent – as divided as the city – but Vesper proves herself loyal to James in the end.

Fleming is said to have based Vesper on a real life spy, Poland’s Krystyna Skarbek, a woman he knew in her later years.  The remarkably resourceful Skarbek organized couriers to bring intelligence reports from Warsaw to Budapest during World War II.  She escaped the Gestapo in Hungary.  In France, she once cajoled, threatened and bribed Gestapo agents into releasing two of her male colleagues.  It is rumored that Oscar-nominated Polish filmmaker Agnieszka Holland is working on a biopic based on her life.  Her real life story is arguably more intriguing than the fictional character she inspired.

Bond girl aside, Vesper is the Latin term for the evening star, and star names are quite current at the moment, including:

• Starbaby Stella, at #186 in 2008 and on the rise;
• Granny chic Esther, ranked #274 last year;
• Boosted by IndyCar driver Danica Patrick, this Slavic star name was at #336 in 2008.  Variant Danika ranked #486;
• The Spanish Estrella came in at #403;
• Star and Starr aren’t as popular – neither spelling ranks in the US Top 1000 – but they’re also heard.

Throw in Estelle and Estella, the Persian Roxane and Roxana, the Welsh Seren and there are plenty of appealing choices that point to the night sky.

The hiccough is that the Roman god Vesper is masculine, but a trio of sister-nymphs known as the Hesperides take the name back in a feminine directions.  Their names vary, but Hesperia, Hespera or Hespere is often among the three.

There’s also a subtle spiritual aspect to Vesper.  Vespers is traditionally an evening prayer service in several religious traditions.  Heavy-hitters like Mozart and Vivaldi have composed musical accompaniments.

Overall, Vesper has far more history than you might expect and sits at the crossroads of several trends:

• Like Grace, Nevaeh and Destiny, she has spiritual meaning;
• Surname choices like Taylor and Piper continue to fare well for girls, making her -er ending a non-issue;
• Plenty of parents opt for nickname-proof names, from Zoe to Mia;
• She shares her v with Ava and Avery, Victoria and Vanessa;
• Nature names continue to evolve, including botanicals – think Lily – as well as newer choices – think Autumn.

It might take some moxie to reclaim Vesper from her Bond girl roots, but there’s plenty here to consider. If you’re looking for a novel word name that will stand out, Vesper is a strong possibility.

This dress, made by Hayley Starr (automatic audio on website), is $280 but when you consider that it can be worn well over 110 different ways and it’s reversible it’s well worth it. The craftsmanship is great and when you check out her website be sure to look at her other dresses (many are less expensive) that are also wearable in many different ways (her Infinite and Fancy Infinite) and her drawings.  She is truly talented and has a great mind.

There are many ways to effectively help children express traumatic experiences. Play, drawing, movement, and of course, talk therapies are all good approaches. But what happens when an activity, intervention, or counseling session calls forth a powerful sensory memory, causing the child to become overtly anxious, tearful, hyperaroused, frightened, or speechless? We know now that these are important signs of autonomic over-activation — that stress hormones are pouring into the body and the sympathetic nervous system is in high gear. For helping professionals, these reactions may be as frightening to them as they are to the children who experience them.

On February 27th, 2010, National Institute for Trauma and Loss in Children will welcome international expert Babette Rothschild, founder of Somatic Trauma Therapy, to its four-day seminar in San Antonio, TX. This is an exciting opportunity for trauma specialists to learn exactly what to do when confronted with the more difficult symptoms of acute and chronic trauma including hyperarousal and reexperiencing. A practitioner since 1976, Rothschild proposes that when stress hormones are pouring into the body that it is time to simply calm the client down. It is at this juncture that we need to not only know when to “apply the brakes,” but also to know what techniques to use.

Babette Rothschild describes applying the brakes as follows: “My logic stems from the observation that both driving and trauma therapy involve controlling something that can easily go out of control. It is not a good idea to proceed with directly addressing a traumatic incident — accelerating trauma processes in the mind and body — unless both therapist and client know how to find and apply the brakes: stop the process if it becomes too uncomfortable or destabilizing….the body is often missed in trauma treatment. On the other hand, some body-approaches neglect the importance of psychological integration. Neither aspect can be neglected. Trauma treatment must regard the whole person and integrate trauma’s impact on both body and mind” (2009).

This wisdom is based on what we now know about how the brain responds to traumatic events. In brief, one key component in the brain’s reaction to trauma is the hippocampus. This region is extremely susceptible to stress hormones that are released when the body feels threatened and a cascade of stress hormones can be stimulated by an actual event or recall of an upsetting memory at any time. If stress hormones reach a high level, they diminish the activity of the hippocampus, causing it to become non-functional. The hippocampal region is key in resolving and integrating incidents and memories; when it is compromised, the hippocampus ceases to provide important information to the cortex [the thinking part of the brain], making rational thought difficult. Suddenly, the cortex may not recognize that a traumatic event is over or no longer present, causing the individual to feel overwhelmed, confused, anxious, or fearful.

According to Rothschild, keeping the hippocampus functioning is important to successful therapy. But how is this accomplished? In sum, by keeping stress hormone levels low so that the nervous system does not go into over drive. And that is why it is critical that every trauma specialist understand how to help children “apply the brakes” during intervention. Applying the appropriate techniques not only stabilizes emotional responses, it is actually helping the hippocampus to return to its proper function as soon as possible when over-activation occurs.

There are currently 1.8 million children who have at least one parent in the military and currently over 230,000 children who have at least one parent who is deployed. Unlike previous wars, US military have faced multiple deployments, leading to stresses that are different than those found in past conflicts. While many military personnel deal well with these challenges, others have catastrophic problems that impact their lives as a result. Approximately 20 percent of military sent to Iraq and Afghanistan come home with posttraumatic stress disorder [PTSD], traumatic brain injury, or depression; others find it impossible to adjust to life away from the war front, finding that relationships, mood, and cognition are impaired or disrupted. When a parent with one or more problems returns to a family on the home front, there is a ripple effect on the partner, extended family, and children. For some, the first deployment is the most stressful; for others the cumulative affect of returning to battle and then to home increases the chance of trauma reactions, marital problems, and even family violence and child abuse at home.

As trauma specialists, we really haven’t had to deal with anything like this before and many of us are finding ourselves in new territory when we attempt to intervene with children and families of today’s military. Multiple homecomings, re-integrations, and deployments are difficult for children to understand and may cause changes in behavior, social interactions, and even cognitive functioning. For example, children and teens who have endured multiple deployments of a parent may have problems with sleep, attention deficits in the classroom, and even higher blood pressure and increased heart rates. School-age children may have behavioral problems in school and lose interest in their favorite activities; adolescent development is disrupted by the deployment of a parent. Young children [up to 5 years old] may regress to earlier behaviors or cling to parents, displaying otherwise unexpressed fear and worry. Do these reactions sound familiar? Of course they do; they are similar to the responses we see in children who have experienced extended or chronic trauma.

Presently there are some programs such as Zero to Three, the Military Child Education Coalition, and the Boys and Girls Clubs of America that address the stress of multiple deployments on children. However, we really know relatively very little about how the unique aspects of the recent wars have impacted military families, particularly children.  In order to address the lack of research on intervention for children of military families, the National Institute for Trauma and Loss in Children is currently working on developing programs to address the needs of children adjusting to parents with multiple deployments, including those children who are attending schools not associated with a military base.

En natt i Stockholm för över ett halv år sedan slutar jag snusa och jag kommer antagligen aldrig behöva göra det igen det men nu sitter jag där på balkongen med en cocktail av föräldralösa känslor i bröstet och röker en cigarett.

men vad folk än säger om ensamhet så är den ensam. och det finns säkert både metoder och taktiker för sånt där men hur återhämtar man sig från en dödsstöt?

jag börjar misstänka att jag aldrig kommer att lista ut det.

och nikotinet och universum blåser liv i en känsla som virvlat in i min puls med hösten, som löven i vinden på trottoaren i morse när jag satt på en trappa och väntade på en anledning att gå därifrån, och jag längtar baklänges in i ett hjärta jag aldrig förtjänade igen.

If you haven’t heard of attorney Bill Luckett, maybe you have heard of the business man.  Bill Luckett is partners with  Morgan Freeman in the well known hot spot Ground Zero , as well as Madidi in Clarksdale, Mississippi.  Freeman has written a fundraising letter to help his friend and business partner run for Governor of Mississippi.  Being from a proverty stricken town, Luckett understands the wants and needs of Mississippi residents. 

“We all have the same desires wants needs and problems right now the biggest problems seems to be jobs.  Mississippi as a whole right now we’re running at just 11% unemployment and that holds true of Clarksdale as well so it doesn’t matter where you’re from. unemployment is rampant, says Luckett.”

Luckett also says he plans to raise education levels video of students and education opportunities if he becomes the democratic nominee of 2011.

Luckett says that it’s going to be a long and difficult task, but he plans to do it and achieve at it as well.

However, There are other obstacles he will have to overcome to insure his campaign takes off in the right direction. Political Science Professor, Cy Rosenblatt has his own opinion of what it’s going to take for Luckett to be the chosen Canidate for this upcoming election.

“Lieutenant Phil Bryant has been in Mississippi politics for a number of years beginning in the state’s legislature andd then rising up through the rights there and now he’s Lieutenant governor and I believe he is in his second term so consequently I think it’s a good possibility that he will run, says Rosenblatt.”

Luckett hopes to get his campaign off the ground in Clarksdale with the help of fundraising from Morgan Freeman.

Luckett faces difficult tasks while running for Governor because he has yet to get his name out all over Mississippi.

“He’s going to have to outspend Phil Bryant who right now is the leading contender for the republican nomination. The reason is Bill is virtually unknown to the people outside of Clarksdale so he’s going to have to spend a lot of money to get name recognition, said Mayo”

As of right now Bill Luckett is interacting with as many people as he can. Fundraising is just a part of his strategy for running a successful campaign.  Bill Luckett graduated from the University of Virginia and has a law degree from the University of Mississippi.  He describes himself as anything but a “career politician” unlike most of the states leaders. Luckett says he hasn’t seen the changes he would like to see in Mississippi and is willing to help move Mississippi forward. For Newswatch, I’m Beth Kincade and I’m Natalie Starr.

August 8^th – Could I of asked for a better day? Film is in the camera; I have 10 minutes to shoot. “O.K. So John, if you lead; Ringo, Paul and George follow and just walk across the zebra crossing”. This is great, there is even a white VW parked on the side of the road and if you think of the association with the band a little further, you’ve got the registration plate reading ‘Linda McCartney Weeps’. Brilliant.

“I’m gonna’ take my shoe’s off. Is that O.K?”. John is wearing this all white suite – very smart, looks a bit like a priest. Ringo; all black, McCartney has no shoes on like a ghost and George… well he looks a bit like a grave digger come to think of it, wearing his all denim attire. I hope this comes out ok, It’s like Sgt. Pepper I guess… being able to read into it. But who would do that?
