This is something I put together between yesterday and today. It was a bit of a pain in the butt because trueSpace 7 kept crashing because of the number of meshes that were loaded. It didn’t have a problem until I went to delete some and add others. trueSpace 4 wouldn’t have had that problem but I only use version 4 for modeling because the lights are better in trueSpace 7. So, I put up with the program crashing until I finally got it done. I added only a few ships at a time and rendered them as .png files to decrease the problems with tS7 but it still had some issues.

Anywho, here it is. There are a bunch of Easter Eggs in this one, mostly “canon” ships that made an appearance as background ships, along with a couple of non-Trek things. One is a ship that appears in all of my Trek space station scenes.

The man is good, do you have doubts? Chris Reyes, or Atolm (his nick), is one of the most creative guys all around. He usually does great sketches, and sometimes they are ported to Bridge Commander, or Starfleet Commander. Take a look at a few more of his creations and say how good they are. For my taste, they are HOT!!!

For my taste, they are HOT!!! Chris (Atolm) don´t play with Star Trek ships only. He already made great concepts for Galactica and Star Wars too. Stay tunned for a taste about that in the future. I´m trying to model the Kelly Class, a medical ship designed by Atolm too. My current progress? See it here:

I reworked the signage and textures on this ship the other day. I like the way my most recent Enterprise model turned out, so I redid the textures for my “Phase II” Constitution-class to match the textures for the TOS Enterprise. After all, I figure this is a Constitution-class variation from the 2260s, possibly built a few years before the refit of the Enterprise for TMP, and before they’d completely worked out the ConstitutionII-class (or Enterprise-class, if you prefer) from the movies. Anywho, I finally got around to rendering some images of it yesterday. I’ve always been a fan of this design, which is why I had to build one a few years ago.

This is my second Google Sketchup ship. The Banting Class Science Vessel was commissioned in 2284. A

This is my second Google Sketchup ship.

The Banting Class Science Vessel was commissioned in 2284. A small ship, with a main saucer hull of 30 metres across, its overall length from bow to nacelle is a mere 50 metres. It employs the Oberth Class Warp Nacelles, specifically designed to shield its energy from interfering with the the ship’s sensistive scanning equipment.

The mission specific sensor plantform is slung below the aft part of the hull. In this case, it is carrying a small deflector array, long range sensor, and photorp launcher for defence and scientific equipment depolyment.

Being a small ship, it is not meant for long term missions, usually remaining within 3 months of the nearest Federation Starbase. With a crew of only 32, and a civilian science team from 12 to 30, it is still sufficiently comfortable to work in.

The first 12 Banting Class ships where commissioned between 2284 and 2288. There were 18 subsequent ships commissioned up until 2299. All 30, with the exception of the Banting, were phased out of service starting in 2309 with the last one in 2312. Due to their popularity, ease of function, and longevity, 13 ships were given to educational and research institutions for civilian use, and 16 to Federation member planets as ship training platforms.

The Banting is in the Starfleet Ship Museum.

(The ship under construction)

At the prudent advice of my fellow Trekkies, I re-made the saucer. I wasn’t happy with the number of edges on the rim, so I increased the count from 24 to 96. This is just on the cusp of what my computer can handle. Fortunately this is a simple ship!

Here’s the port shuttle deck. It has a workable space of 7 x 7 metres (5 metres high), or 22.96′ x 22.96′… The port shuttle deck has one shuttle. The starbord shuttle deck has 3 worker bees, and assorted EVA equipment. If required, the bees can be transported to the supply hold, freeing the deck for another shuttle.

Here is some more shuttle bay detail. I’ve increased the depth from 7m to 10m. I was planning to make it a through shuttle deck, but I didn’t like the idea of seperating 2 full decks in the saucer.

I’ve been working a lot on deck 3. Primarily with corridors, windows, and the shuttle deck control rooms

When I originally made this background, I thought it looked like a bright star. Then I rendered the ship in and did a lot of post-render work (which made the start brighter) and I realized it looks like a start that’s perhaps too bright. Like, say, one that’s going to go Nova pretty soon. Hence, the image title.

In honor of seeing Neko Case at the Moon tonight, I am going to take a look back at many of the live music shows I have seen over the years. Some good, some, well, not so much. From the Big Sombrero to Jannus Landing, U2 to De La Soul, I have seen some weird, wild stuff.

Starship. There. I said it. My name is Lyssa and Starship was my first concert. I went with my sister. We saw them in Peoria, a city that was not built on rock and roll. I wanted my first concert to be Loverboy or Prince — two shows I have since seen — alas, it wasn’t meant to be. (For the record, I only saw Loverboy in 2008 because they played after a Tampa Bay Rays game, and they sucked.)

U2. The first time I saw U2, it was the Joshua Tree Tour, 5 December 1987 (the day after my birthday!) at Tampa Stadium. My boyfriend bought my ticket ($18.50, I still have the stub, of course), and I ended up breaking up with him before the concert. We traded tickets (I got the good ones), so I got to sit with my friend Jenny, whose dad drove us to the show. Fantastic. Amazing. Awesome. I consider this my first “real” concert. Seeing U2 in that stadium was one of the best times of my life. Seriously. I also saw U2’s Elevation tour at the Ice Palace on 1 December 2001. Another birthday gift ($110), and another boy — this time I was just about to break up with him. I guess I should be glad I didn’t go see U2 in Tampa this year.

Depeche Mode. So many Depeche shows, so many good times. Of course, I remember the show I couldn’t go to because of a freakin’ hurricane. Thank you, Hurricane Wilma, for canceling the kickoff show of DM’s Playing the Angel tour. I promoted the show with this great piece I wrote for the Miami New Times, and scored a free ticket and access to the band. Fuck you, Wilma. Well, I will always have the World Violation Tour, the Devotional Tour, and the Exciter Tour, but I will always remember the one that washed away. Wait, I will also remember the Devotional Tour, when I was in the second row and made eye contact with David Gahan as we sang “Stripped” and danced as one. *sigh* Yes, that makes everything better. Phew.

R.E.M. The Green Tour was a fun show. It was our senior year of high school, right before we graduated, and I went with a bunch of my girlfriends. It was at the USF Sun Dome, which isn’t the best venue, but it was still great to see R.E.M. It just sucks that my most vivid memory of that concert is of the drunk guy who almost puked on me. I jumped out of the way just in the nick of time.

Lollapalooza. It was the 9 August 1991, and I had just moved to Boston. My friend Holly and I scored free — and awesome — tickets to go see the festival at Great Woods. Siouxsie and The Banshees were on that tour, but didn’t play because the bitch got sick. We did get to see Jane’s Addiction, Living Colour, Nine Inch Nails, Ice-T, the Butthole Surfers and the Henry Rollins Band. Well, I slept through Living Colour — until the hippies began throwing sod and I got hit in the head. Not cool. Anyone who knows me knows how much I hate being dirty (when I’m not prepared to be dirty; camping doesn’t count). I was wicked cranky until Perry Farrell got on stage. “Jane Says” made it all better. Oh, here’s a photo from a yacht part I went to with Perry. It was during WMC in Miami, and Sasha & Digweed were the DJs for the party on a boat. Sweet.

Perry Farrell and his lovely wife

The Lemonheads. I met Evan Dando when I was living in Boston, and I had a huge crush on him. I was very excited about going to see him at the Masquerade in Atlanta. I went with my crazy friend Kim, and I lost her two minutes after we got inside. I didn’t care. I was used to it. I had staked out my spot by the stage and I was going to stare at Evan during the entire show. I bonded with some girls around me and had a great time. After the second encore, the lights came on and a woman came on stage, grabbed the mike and shouted, “Is there a Lyssa Oberkreser in the crowd? Lyssa?” OMG. It was my moment. Evan recognized me and wanted me to come backstage! OMG. The girls around me screamed and boosted me up on stage. I was giddy. The lights were on me and everyone knew that I was special. Evan picked me! {flutters} Um, yeah. Not so much. It wasn’t that at all. It was my friend, my drunk friend who passed out backstage, and I was called upon to claim her drunk ass and take her home. KHAAAAAN!!!!!!! (The second time I saw the Lemonheads was at Jannus Landing, and I ran into my friend GeorgeAnn, which was very cool.)

Moby. On tour for “Play,” you wouldn’t think that Moby would put on a good live show, but it was fantastic. Great outdoor courtyard venue, perfect weather, and good friends. But the meat! My G-D, the meat! There I was, watching Moby the vegan while choking on the smoke and smell of grilled meat. There had to have been about 10 sausage vendors around that courtyard, and it was impossible to get away from all of the smell of burning dead animals. Un-freakin’-believable.

Elvis Costello. The absolute worst show I have ever seen in my life. Seriously. It was at the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center in 2004. I went with my friend Nick (“Hey, Leese! You wanna smoke some marijuana and go see Elvis Costello?”), and I fell asleep. Elvis only played ballads (awww! He was in wuv!) and it was a crowd of older people, meaning that I could hear beeping hearing aids throughout the show. BO-RING. Hated it. Huge disappointment.

Prince. When I was in the 6th grade, I begged my mom to let me go see Prince. Of course, she said no. I had no idea what a “pocket full of horses, Trojan and some of them used” meant, but I thought Prince was hot and I loved him. Flash forward 20 years. My friend Nick had an extra ticket for Prince’s 2004 Musicology tour at the St. Pete Times Forum (“Hey, Leese! You wanna smoke some marijuana and go see Prince?”), and I was beyond excited. Awesome show. Definitely in my top 5 favorite concerts of all time. Prince performed for nearly three hours. It was incredible. Good things do come to those who wait.

Wilco. Saw them twice. Once at the Tampa Theatre, the other time at the Pompano Beach Amphitheater. Both shows were fantastic. Great venues, great band. Wilco puts on an awesome show when the members aren’t too high.

Sharon Jones and The Dap-Kings. Wow. Nothing like saving the best for last. Not the best show. Oh, no. The best story, for sure. The entire night is enough for a solid book chapter. Here you will get the sweet and condensed version. I hadn’t really eaten all day, I did some serious bar-hopping (and stuff) before heading to the show at Club Downunder, and I fainted. Yep. First time I ever fainted. I once experienced the almost-fainting thing, but I had never fainted before the night of Sharon Jones. Listening to the opening act, I started to feel it. I had the tunnel vision going on, it was closing in, and I could no longer focus on the fiddle and accordion players on stage. I was going down. Only, I thought I could fight it. I fought something, or someone. I have no idea how long I was blacked out, I just remember waking up on the floor. A friend was holding my glasses. Some kid was handing me a bottle of water. I could see my date’s feet next to me, but I was too dizzy and too embarrassed to look up at him. I fainted. In public. I was that girl. Mortified. Well, at least I didn’t puke or piss myself, right? The good news? I fucking rallied like a champ and didn’t miss one note of (the very short) Sharon Jones. ROCK ON!

Here’s to a good show tonight, with good friends, beautiful music, and no fainting!

Eric Bana gives Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto some hair care tips.

(Paramount) Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Eric Bana, Simon Pegg, Karl Urban, Bruce Greenwood, Leonard Nimoy, John Cho, Anton Yelchin, Ben Cross, Winona Ryder, Chris Hemsworth, Jennifer Morrison, Rachel Nichols, Faran Tahir. Directed by J.J. Abrams

Even icons from time to time must reinvent themselves, if for no other reason to remain relevant in changing times. That is even more true for those having to do with the future.

The Federation starship U.S.S. Kelvin is investigating strange readings at a black hole. To the surprise of the ship’s captain (Tahir), a gigantic spacecraft of unknown design emerges from the singularity and without any provocation at all, opens fire on the starship, crippling it. The captain is forced to come aboard the unknown ship and is escorted to its captain, a Romulan named Nero (Bana), who proceeds to ask the Federation representative some rather odd questions, the strangest being what stardate is it. The answer drives Nero berserk and he murders the captain and once again opens fire on the Kelvin.

The second-in-command (Hemsworth) orders an evacuation of the doomed Kelvin, paying special attention to his wife (Morrison) who is in labor. He intends to join her, but the ship’s automated functions are out of commission, and they are needed to gain critical time for the crew of the Kelvin to make their escapes. He realizes with sickening horror that he must remain aboard to run the ship manually. The young lieutenant saves his crew by ramming the dying starship into the unknown spaceship, crippling its weapon systems and propulsion. The name of the young hero? George Kirk.

Years later, his son James (Pine), born the day of his death, is adrift in Iowa, drinking in dive bars, picking up every woman he can and generally just lashing out at the world. While attempting to pick up a pretty Starfleet cadet named Uhura (Saldana), he gets jumped by a number of cadets, holding his own for awhile before getting his tush handed to him until Captain Christopher Pike (Greenwood) stops the fracas and clears the bar. He talks to the young Kirk about his father, and the difference he made to the 800 lives that were saved by his sacrifice and invites Kirk to join the Academy.

At first Kirk is reluctant to join Starfleet but eventually relents. On the shuttle ride to San Francisco, he meets an irascible divorced physician who is joining Starfleet to rebuild a career that had been essentially stymied in his divorce. The medico’s name is Leonard McCoy (Urban).

Already at the academy is a young half-Vulcan named Spock (Quinto). Tormented by young Vulcans for his half-human ancestry, Spock elects to follow the Vulcan disciplines of logic and dispassion of his father Sarek (Cross) with the blessing of his compassionate mother Amanda (Ryder). Despite this, Spock elects to decline admission to the Vulcan Science Academy (the first Vulcan ever to do so) and join Starfleet. After graduating from the Academy, he devises the notorious Kobiyashi Maru test, the infamous “no-win” scenario.

In the meantime, a brash young Ensign Kirk is blowing through the academy in a mere three years, still picking up women wherever he goes including a beautiful young Orion ensign (Nichols) who has come up with a rather ingenious solution to Spock’s test, landing him in hot water with the Academy dons. Unfortunately, an emergency comes up that relates directly to Kirk’s past, one that will bring all the disparate elements and characters together and forge together a crew that is destined to become a legend, while a man from the future (Nimoy) holds the key to the lives of Spock and Kirk.

The Star Trek franchise has been in decline for several years now, with an over-saturation of product that eventually seemed somewhat formulaic in many ways. Star Trek reboots the franchise with the original characters as seen through fresh new eyes. Director J.J. Abrams balances a delicate line of maintaining the spirit of the original series while adding additional elements of action and epic scope. Thus his new re-imagining of Star Trek will please not only hardcore Trek fans but also more general audiences.

Electing to go with a cast of young actors while steering clear of big name actors (Bana as Nero is the most recognizable face in the show other than Nimoy, and Bana is nearly unrecognizable in any case), and they come through in spades. All of the major crew members (Cho as Sulu, Pegg as Scotty and Yelchin as Chekov, as well as Urban and Saldana) have extremely pivotal scenes and establish their characters nicely.

Much of the success of Star Trek rests on the shoulders of the two leads, and they pull through splendidly. Pine captures the essence of James Tiberius Kirk without the quirks and mannerisms of William Shatner. He nails the bravado, the charisma, the independence and the compassion of Kirk but at the same time manages to render him human and fallible. Like Shatner’s Kirk, he is rash and sometimes prone to egotism, but at the heart of him is his brilliant intuition and willingness to risk. Pine takes an epic character and makes him accessible.

Quinto, best known as Sylar on the hit TV show “Heroes” makes a marvelous Spock. He radiates icy calm that masks the boiling inferno below the surface. Spock is heavily conflicted but chooses not to come to terms with his conflicting natures; instead he subverts his more human aspects in favor of the Vulcan stoicism. Quinto also has an uncanny resemblance to Nimoy as a young Spock, and fills the boots more than adequately.

There are plenty of breathtaking special effects, not to mention some intense action sequences, the best of which is a parachute jump onto a drilling platform high in the atmosphere of Vulcan. Visually, this is a movie that will rock your world.

But is it Star Trek? That’s the question most Trek fans were hoping to have answered. I have to say, yes and no. The original television series in many ways was less action-oriented than this is. Yes, there were plenty of fistfights, phasers set on stun and epic space battles in the original, but the themes had to do with things that were important to series creator Gene Roddenberry; man’s inhumanity to man, racial tension, drug abuse, gender inequality and the supreme waste and ultimate uselessness that is war. Here, we are being re-introduced to the characters that the producers hope to rebuild the franchise with and the movie is more about that than taking on issues.

However, the foundation has been laid and hopefully in the future we’ll see stories more in tune with the high bar that Roddenberry set. Given the outstanding box office returns the movie had, it is inevitable that there will be at least one or two more installments in the movie series if not more. The action and special effects will get the bodies in the door; the characters will bring those bodies back for more. Abrams has hit a home run with the new Star Trek. Now, the question becomes can he do it again?

WHY RENT THIS: Breathtaking special effects and heart-pounding action sequences drive the movie. Young actors bring established characters back to life with fresh perspectives. Pine makes a fabulous Captain Kirk and could be a future star.

WHY RENT SOMETHING ELSE: The overall tone that Trek-haters despised is still present here.

FAMILY VALUES: Some scenes of brief sexuality and some violence; also there is a nightmare-inducing creature during the Delta Vega sequence. Otherwise, fit for most young audiences (but not for the very teeny tiny).

TRIVIAL PURSUITS: The seven years gap between this movie and Star Trek: Nemesis is the longest in the franchise history.

NOTABLE DVD FEATURES: There are three different home viewing versions of this so far: a single-disc DVD which is essentially just the film, a 2-disc Special Edition DVD which contains some deleted scenes including Abrams’ take on the Klingons, and a 3-Disc Blu-Ray which contains a humongous number of featurettes, as well as a 360 degree view of various Enterprise and Romulan sets. There is also a feature on Gene Roddenberry’s legacy.

FINAL RATING: 8/10

TOMORROW: Disney’s A Christmas Carol

I decided to change a couple of plans I had for this model.

One plan was to model each detail, including all of the dozens of cuts in the grills on the warp pylons and nacelles. However, the object subtraction tool in trueSpace was being a pain in the butt and then, when I did get it to work, one set of 4 grills for one pylon was over 43,000 polygons. So, I opted for a texture with a bump map to simulate the holes. (the modeled grills wouldn’t have looked a lot better anyway, unless you got really close to them)

Another thing I nixed was the working shuttlebay doors. I can make working clamshell doors, I’ve done it lots of times. In fact, I find them to be some of the easiest doors to make. However, I have a few really close shots of the “doors” on the 11-foot studio model and, in order to make them work, they won’t be very accurate. And, since I’m going for accuracy here, I opted for nonworking doors that are more accurately modeled.

by Andre Norton

Andre Norton-Grand Mistress of science fiction-presents a grand tapestry of the far-flung interstellar future, in which the first starships from Earth have burst out into the universe . . . only to run straight into the restraining grasp of the stagnant alien federation known as Central Control.

Only as interstellar mercenaries can humans go to the stars; the aliens who already dominate the galaxy allow no other recourse. But when Swordsman Third Class Kana Karr and his comrades-in-arms are betrayed and abandoned on a hostile world by their alien masters, the warriors from Earth begin a desperate but glorious march across a planet whose every sword is against them. Their actions may doom humanity’s future . . . or lead the way to an empire of their own!

Four thousand years later, galactic civilization is collapsing, and the underfunded crew of an exploration starship is forced to set down on an uncharted planet: a mysterious, abandoned world that is achingly beautiful-and hauntingly familiar. Ranger Sergeant Kartr, telepath and stellar Patrolman, searches with his crewmates for the source of a beacon which may mean escape for them all. What he finds is far stranger: the first clue to what may become the greatest revelation in galactic history!

The defining events of future historyas only Andre Norton could tell them!

As temperatures dipped in the Bay Area, Kelly and I headed south to soak up some good old Southern California sunshine. Our trip included some of my favorite things in life: Family, friends, food, music and baseball. The culmination of our road trip was a fabulous meal prepared with friends Mickey and Rachel Thomas, and an interview with Mickey about the role cooking plays in his life.

The beginning of our trip was in beautiful Pismo Beach where we enjoyed dinner with Kelly’s mom, Linda and her stepfather, Travis. Kelly frequently talks about how much she enjoyed her mom’s cooking growing up and Linda’s delicious barbecued pork sandwiches did not disappoint.

On the way to our second stop in Pasadena, we managed to fit in some disc golf at the historic Oak Grove Course. Our second evening was another treat – I met Kelly’s dad, Bruce, and his partner Cynthia. They are a couple of gourmets. Cynthia treated us to the most delectable baked salmon with potatoes (roasted with bacon drippings, yum!) and her famous orange cake. After dinner, Bruce took us for a spirited cruise in his custom modified ’38 Studebaker.

Day three’s itinerary led us east to Joshua Tree National Park for a night of camping on the desert floor. We enjoyed leftovers of salmon and potatoes and were treated to a brilliant night sky before bed. The sparkling stars provided some comfort overhead, however the desert floor did not. Our next trek was by foot on a 9-mile hike to and from Lost Palms Oasis following which we headed directly to the nearest store we could find to buy camping air mattresses.

Four nights of comfortable beds and comfort food lied ahead with my dear friends Mickey and Rachel Thomas. I consider them family, and they treated us like family in their lovely Palm Desert home. Many of you know Mickey as a talented musician from his days with Jefferson Starship and Elvin Bishop. He continues making fantastic music as he records and tours as Starship featuring Mickey Thomas. We spent our time telling stories, creating some incredible meals, drinking great wine, watching playoff baseball and ending each evening with a scary movie in the spirit of Halloween.

What many of you may not know about Mickey is his passion for food. Dinner with the Thomas’ is always a treat, whether Mickey or Rachel is cooking. They are both very talented in the kitchen and two of the sweetest most down to earth people you will encounter. After greeting us with a fresh Pasta Primavera dinner, Mickey and Rachel graciously allowed us to take over their kitchen the following night for a meal we prepared with risotto and mussels. We spent our last day making a video for Noah’s Wish – Mickey and Rachel’s favorite charity – and planning our last feast. Creating this feast was like a musical performance with all four of us in the kitchen creating six dishes that were to die for: Rachel’s secret barbecued chicken wings, stuffed eggplant rolls in marinara sauce, Vietnamese shrimp meatballs, Southern scallops with black beans, Greek salad, and spicy shrimp lettuce wraps.
