The Deccan Herald came out with an article on the shifting of bus depots from Majestic at the end of the month in preparation for the Metro station construction. This means that construction may actually start sometime in the near future, only 8 months late. However, some things in this article do not match up with the information we have received from KSRTC officials:

The Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) will relocate its two depots functioning in the premises of KSRTC bus stand in Majestic area to hand over the land for Metro rail works.

KSRTC has more than two depots, and at least three will be shifted for construction, according to our sources.

The Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) will relocate its two depots functioning in the premises of KSRTC bus stand in Majestic area to hand over the land for Metro rail works.

We were told that the total area given to BMRCL would be 27 acres, and that 7 of those would be kept for the Metro station (This could be an error by DH : 20 acres (for workspace) + 7 acres (for station) = 27 acres)

Of the total 35 acres belonging to KSRTC in Majestic area, 20 acres will be handed over to BMRCL by the end of this month.

The numbers we got were: KSRTC owns all the land, including BMTC space, which is 42 acres (article says 35). Even if you just count the KSRTC side, we were still told that was 32 acres.

This conflicting information is puzzling. Not sure if this reflects changes in plans (possible), misinformation by the people we talked to (also possible), or just bad reporting by the Deccan Herald (very possible).

On a related note, BMRCL decide at its board meeting in New Delhi that they would reinvite tenders for the underground stretch of the metro in order to help lower cost.

We are close to 100% completion for our brand new prayer room. We’ve spent a fair amount of time getting the room just how we like it. One thing we wanted to provide was an inspiring place for people to worship, reflect, read and (of course) pray. As we progressed into the project, one of the first pieces we needed to decide on was what to put at each station to focus people on what each station provided. We had a running list going listing the concepts for each station, but hadn’t solidified a specific look (or brand) for the signs or settled on the wording style.

Sitting down to work on this piece, we wanted to make sure the vision and heart of the room was very present and clear. Taking some notes scribbled down on paper, the running list and a printed out email from Pastor Jeff which gave the clear cut vision for each station, the project began creating itself. The first round of stations signs left something to be desired…

first design for prayer stations

It became evident fairly soon in the process that we did not want to denote a number with each station because we wanted people to have the freedom to move around the room as they were led. So, we dropped the station number and went with…

second idea

This idea was forged by using the old trusty serif/sans-serif combo of design mixed with a watercolor done originally by our own Jacob Paul Pettinato (www.jacobpauldesign.com). The signs looked great from a design standpoint, but lacked in cohesiveness with the look and feel of the room. There were a lot of tans and dark browns in the room and the white was a bit stark. After several failed attempts at trying to fade the white into a tan, we threw out the white sign idea and decided to pursue a new direction. Wood. Yeah, that’s right, we went with the material that Jesus probably spent the first 30 years of his life working with the most. Sounds poetic now, but at the time we hadn’t thought through any biblical reason for going with the design, it just looked great with the look, feel and vision for the room. We could have probably easy capitalized on it, but that is now in the past. Here is where we pleasantly ended up:

our final design

placement in the room

The process was long but well worth it. We ended up with a quality design that lines up well with the vision for our new prayer room. If you get the chance (and you are an attender of our church), please stop by the prayer room and take some time to walk the stations and connect with God…the Author of creativity.

Thanks.//Greg for helping to mount the signs//Carla for your creative eye and teamwork//Susan for the being able to make the hard decisions//Donavon for pushing the project along and keeping everyone on schedule//Jacob for letting us use your watercolor even though we went with a different design//

Photo by Berenice Abbott. From the New York Public Library Collection.

Abbott, Berenice (1898-1991)

Accomplished American photographer Berenice Abbott may be best known for her photographs of New York City’s changing cityscape, but she also made memorable images of lesbians, bisexuals, and gay men in Paris in the 1920s and in New York from the 1930s through 1965.

Born in Springfield, Ohio in 1898, Abbott briefly attended Ohio State University before moving to New York City in 1918. In New York, she lived in a semi-communal Greenwich Village apartment shared by Djuna Barnes and others. Man Ray and Marcel Duchamp were part of her social circle.

In 1921, Abbott moved to Europe where she studied sculpture in Paris and Berlin. Among her lovers in Paris were artists’ model Tylia Perlmutter and sculptress and silverpoint artist Thelma Wood. In Paris, between 1923 and 1925, she studied photography while working as Man Ray’s assistant. In 1926, she opened her own portrait studio and had a successful one-person exhibition. Two years later, she showed photographs at the Salon des Indépendants.

During Abbott’s Paris years, she photographed many figures from the worlds of literature and the arts, including James Joyce, Foujita, Coco Chanel, and Max Ernst. However, her most significant contribution to queer history and aesthetics are her vivid portraits of lesbians and bisexuals. Among these are the younger expatriate lesbian writers Margaret Anderson, Jane Heap, Sylvia Beach, Bryher, Janet Flanner and Flanner’s lover Solita Solano, as well as the artist Gwen Le Gallienne, with whom she frequented gay bars.

Another of Abbott’s most memorable images is that of a masculine-appearing Thelma Wood, made after she and Abbott were no longer lovers. Abbott also photographed Wood’s new love, Djuna Barnes, whose affair with Wood was the inspiration for the novel Nightwood (1936). Unlike her image of Wood, Abbott’s photograph of her lover, Tylia Perlmutter, is delicate and dreamy.

Abbott also photographed the French bookstore owner Adrienne Monnier, Sylvia Beach’s lover; the wealthy Violette Murat (Princess Eugène Murat); and artist Marie Laurencin, a bisexual who may have had an affair with Murat. Abbott made images as well of such gay or bisexual men as André Gide, Robert McAlmon, and the flamboyant Jean Cocteau. Abbott’s bisexual Paris clients also included painters Margaret Sargent and Betty Parsons (later of the Betty Parsons Gallery in Manhattan) and architect/designer Eileen Gray.

Returning to New York City in 1929, Abbott photographed the rapidly changing city. She also photographed U.S. Highway 1 from Maine to Florida and created images to illustrate the laws and processes of physics. But she also continued making images of lesbian and bisexual women. In particular, she photographed such subjects as poet Edna St. Vincent Millay, Harlem Renaissance art patron A’Lelia Walker, and actress/director Eva Le Gallienne, Gwen’s step-sister.

In New York, Abbott formed an alliance with critic Elizabeth McCausland, which lasted from the early 1930s until McCausland’s death in 1965. Abbott’s portraits of McCausland confirm the aptness of the nickname she gave her lover, “Butchy.” McCausland wrote early essays about Abbott’s work.

Having almost flaunted her love of women early in her life, Abbott later obscured and even lied about her lesbianism, distancing and closeting herself as thoroughly as possible. In 1968, she moved permanently to Maine.

Had her lovers been male and her lesbian and bisexual subjects been heterosexual, Abbott’s work–given its quality and the accomplishments of her subjects–would have achieved earlier and greater recognition. Still, her work brought her fame and financial security. Her images of blatantly lesbian-appearing women, such as Jane Heap, for example, have been exhibited in art galleries and museums for decades. As the story of her life and the lives of her subjects become better known, her role in creating memorable images of gay, lesbian, and bisexual people finds greater appreciation.

Byappanahalli Terminal to Mysore Road Terminal, going underground from around the Cricket Stadium until just past the City Railway station. The largest station in the Bangalore Metro project will in the KSRTC Bus Stand at the intersection of the north-south and east-west lines. The station will be an L-shaped construction, lying four levels below ground, reaching a depth of 66 feet. The lowest level will be the east-west line, and the total area of the station will be slightly more than 7 acres. The estimated cost for this station is Rs. 500 crores.

The land on which the BMTC and the KSRTC Bus Stands lie is property of KSRTC, which is 42 acres in total. The KSRTC side is 32 acres, and the bus stand alone takes up 16 acres, 30 guntas. For construction of the Metro stand, BMRCL will occupy 27 acres for offices, workspace, materials, which will be handed over to them in three stages by KSRTC. After construction, the BMRCL will retain the 7 acres for the station, and return control of the rest to KSRTC. In exchange, BMRCL will give KSRTC 9.5 acres elsewhere in the city, 7.5 of which will be in Peenya. The land from bus depots 3, 4, and 5 will be handed over during construction, and the depots will shift to elsewhere, including on depot at Shantinagar. Additionally, due to the departure space KSRTC will lose when construction begins, they have decided to convert the front side of the building into a temporary bus stand. Already they have cleared many of the trees in the area, and removed the small garden space in front. KSRTC will then create a large C-shaped bus stand, including minimal commercial space which may accommodate some of the displaced shop owners from the existing bus stand. Already Mangalore buses have shifted to the front on the west side of the building.

Construction was set to begin in March of 2009, but has been postponed to August, then September, then 10th October, and now nobody knows for sure. There have been a few reasons for the hold up, including decisions on land transfer, and the holiday season which slowed progress. Presently KSRTC is waiting for the Work Order from the BMRCL to commence construction, but does not know when this will be issued.

Dried blood brimming with flies and an entrance bereft of guards greeted passengers at Kavi Nazrul M

Dried blood brimming with flies and an entrance bereft of guards greeted passengers at Kavi Nazrul Metro station a day after gunshots felled a youth there.

Officials of Metro Railway washed their hands of the incident, arguing that 32-year-old Jharkhand resident Surinder Bharti was killed by a suspected business rival outside the station.

But they couldn’t explain why nobody had bothered to at least wash away the dried blood on the stairs leading to the station.

“It’s a shame. How can the authorities be so blasé about someone being killed? This is the entrance to a Metro station, right?” protested Sushmita Chakraborti, a resident of Birji Road in Garia.

Kavi Nazrul station (Garia Bazar), the last stop for Metro passengers heading south, is one of the four new stations on the extended route that was inaugurated with much fanfare in August by railway minister Mamata Banerjee.

The chief operations manager of Metro Railway, J.K. Mitra, said Surinder’s murder was a law and order problem that should be handled by police. “In any case, the incident did not occur on our premises. It is the police’s responsibility to maintain security outside the station. There has been no security lapse on our part.”

Surinder’s alleged killer, Pankaj Lala, and his accomplice were seen loitering near the Metro station since 3pm on Sunday, around two hours before the youth was fatally shot twice at the entrance to the station.

“Internal security, including vigilance on platforms and tracks, is the duty of Metro Railway Police and the Railway Protection Force,” said Rabi Mahapatra, the chief spokesperson for Metro Railway. “The outer ring of security is the responsibility of the Calcutta and West Bengal police, depending on the location of the station.”

Police officers said it was not possible to deploy a large contingent at all Metro stations. “Also, the new stations have three levels and it is difficult for us to cover everything,” said a senior officer.

There is clearly a case for Metro rail to extend its closed-circuit camera network — 340 cameras in 21 stations — to the entire station premises, including the entrances, like in underground systems abroad.

L.N. Meena, the superintendent of police of South 24-Parganas, meanwhile, promised a security boost at the stations along the southern extension. “I have designated a team of officers to scan the four new Metro stations and come up with recommendations to intensify security in co-ordination with the railway police,” he said.
to wait
in the June light for a touch
of the sun to heal them for another
to untie their hands
put words in their mouths

Fifteen people are feared killed as the Goa Express rammed a stationary Mewar Express near Mathura on Wednesday morning.

The accident took place at around 4 a.m. between Mathura and Vrindavan stations. While early reports put the number of casualties at 10-12, about 40 to 50 people are trapped inside a crushed unreserved bogey of the Mewar Express.

Train collide

Gas cutters are being used to cut through the damaged bogey. “Fifteen injured have been taken out from the ill-fated general coach of Mewar Express after cutting the bogey,” District Magistrate Dinesh Chandra Shukla said.

Senior police and district official have reached the spot. Helplines have been set up in all major neighbouring cities (Can hyper link helplinbe numbers copy here too).

Northern Railway has cancelled the Agra Nizamuddin inter-city express and diverted a few other trains which included the Delhi-bound Rajdhani Express for Mumbai, Andhra Pradesh Express and Karnataka Express. They are being diverted via Tundla.

Sure beside the transceivers the electronic logger is a must. YE2R Team already agree that the most suitable electronic logger is N1MM and that’s why this week end, Sunday, 18 October 2009, YB2ECG and YC2BBY goes to YB2DX QTH to setup the logger.

Provided with two identical PC’s we have installed N1MM logger, the newest update and sure with the recent update with wl_cty.dat from AD1C and also super partial data base.

The ‘minus’ aspect is that two pc’s are not networked, so we should be careful to maintain the Cabrillo. The scenario is there’ll be two cabrillo’s and then for sending the log we must combine these logs manually. I hope for the next event we have spare time to internetworked the two pc’s.

The operating room is Pendopo, Javanesse style building. We’ll use two transceiver and several monoband antenna and L-antenna for 160m operation.

Here’s some picture the antenna and the towers.

MUMBAI: The bottlenecks on the roads leading to the city’s crowded suburban stations will not disappear soon. Reason? The World Bank (WB) has
finally dumped the Rs 220-crore Station Area Traffic Improvement Scheme (SATIS) that would have widened the station roads and removed encroachments (by resettling hawkers and slums) from its project and funding list.

According to sources, the WB had asked the BMC to complete all formalities regarding planning and appointment of implementing agency by August 2008. “Fed up over no response and inordinate delay from BMC, the WB decided not to fund the project and deleted it from its MUTP programme,” admitted senior officials in the BMC and MMRDA.

However, senior BMC officials insisted that the corporation would implement SATIS on its own. “The WB can advise us, but cannot

force us to implement SATIS or any other scheme under their projects,” said a senior BMC official. Experts are, however, sceptical about the civic claims, given that political interference and red-tape invariably delay its projects.

The SATIS was formulated as a part of WB-funded Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP) in 2002 and involved road development, widening and encroachment removal in and around Dadar, Andheri, Ghatkopar, Chembur, Malad, Borivli and Kurla stations in the first phase.

Incidentally, the MMRDA is implementing the skywalk part of SATIS. The other parts of the project were handed over to the BMC for implementation over 30 months ago.

The project involved resettling and rehabilitation of hawkers and slumdwellers around railway stations, widening of the roads leading to the stations, thereby improving the dispersal system at stations. Interestingly, the Thane municipal corporation recently developed Thane railway station under its SATIS programme, the only successful programme in Mumbai region till today.

Managing Editor confirms that ‘guidance’ memo was sent to members to stop making controversial claim. While many in the news media continue to inflate and exaggerate the number of uninsured Americans, National Public Radio is making a change.
NPR’S deputy senior supervising editor Joe Neel drafted an e-mail that was sent out Oct. 14 to member stations addressing the number of uninsured. The e-mail clarified proper use of Census Bureau statistics and advised staff to “avoid the construction ‘46 million Americans.’” That number has been a flashpoint throughout the health care debate.
The NPR e-mail said, “We are sticking with the 46 million number issued by the Census Bureau in September (for 2008). It’s the number of people in the U.S. who lack insurance coverage at any point during the prior 12 months. It includes citizens, legal residents and undocumented immigrants.”
The e-mail went on to explain how not to report the issue. “Better to say ‘46 million uninsured in America,’ or ‘the nation’s 46 million uninsured people,’ or any other formulation that does not label all 46 million as citizens,” the e-mail continued.

I have the day off today, and after a busy weekend, I was looking forward to sleeping in earlier. It was a good nights sleep, until a helicopter flies over my house. It was quite low, and it was enough to wake me up. I checked the clock: 5:30 A.M. As I close my eyes and start to doze off again, I realize that I can still hear the helicopter, hovering. I tried to ignore it, and tried to fall asleep for the next half hour, but couldn’t. One by one, helicopters were flying over every 10 or so minutes. I got up at 6:00 A.M. and looked out the window. And there’s two helicopters hovering right there. I walked out front, and there’s three more! I ran back inside to check the news on TV. It turns out, an off-duty police officer was killed in a one-car accident, but were five helicopters really needed to cover this? It might have slowed traffic a little bit, I don’t think all those news helicopters were needed to cover this.

Anyway, that’s it. I’m just a little upset that I couldn’t sleep in (those helicopters woke me up and I couldn’t go back to sleep!), but, there’s always next weekend.
