StatoilHydro and Tierra Geophysical have signed a contract for joint development of seismic imaging

StatoilHydro and Tierra Geophysical have signed a contract for joint development of seismic imaging software technology, which is expected to improve StatoilHydro’s ability to assess exploration and production targets in areas of complex geology.

Tierra President Dave Diller commented: “We are very pleased to be partnering with StatoilHydro on this project. StatoilHydro is one of the most technically adept companies in the world in geophysics, with broad expertise and experience. StatoilHydro aggressively pursues research, but they also enhance their internal projects by watching outside their company for new technology. Tierra has spent years optimizing our finite difference propagators, and combining that with StatoilHydro’s imaging expertise and experience is an ideal marriage of complimentary skills and technologies. Today people may think of Tierra as ‘The Forward Modeling Company,’ but the same underlying technology has other uses in seismic imaging, which this project will leverage.”

Rolf Helland, project manager in the StatoilHydro Exploration research program, said: “The development of these tools in collaboration with Tierra Geophysical is an important component in our strategic effort to increase our capability to determine improved, reliable images in complex geological settings with large velocity variations. One of the key criteria in such projects is fast imaging turnaround time, and this will be achieved using the finite difference core from Tierra. Tierra will be commercializing the software that is developed during the project. The first results from the project, a highly optimized reverse time migration (RTM), are available as both a software product and as services in the third quarter of this year.”

Tony Hayward, CEO of BP Global Advances in technology for extracting natural gas from shale have fun

Tony Hayward, CEO of BP Global

Advances in technology for extracting natural gas from shale have fundamentally changed the way countries worldwide are setting energy policy and viewing natural gas as the cleaner “bridge fuel” for the next century.

This past week at the World Gas Conference in Buenos Aires, Tony Hayward, BP Global’s chief executive, is quoted as stating “proven natural gas reserves around the world have risen to 1.2 trillion barrels of oil equivalent, enough for 60 years’ supply”. Rune Bjornson of Norway’s StatoilHydro is quoted as stating “exploitable reserves are much greater than supposed just three years ago and may meet global gas needs for generations.”

Across the U.S. and Canada shale gas projects have increased natural gas reserve estimates. The U.S. Energy Department has increased the natural gas reserve by ~40%. Natural gas production from shale basins in the U.S. and Canada have increased supplies during a recession that has reduced industrial demand. Increased domestic supplies have diminished US imports of liquefied natural gas (“LGN”) from Trinidad and Qatar and elswhere. The US Energy Department forecasts shale gas to meet half of the U.S. natural gas demand within 20 years. And meanwhile a planned LNG terminal in British Columbia changed direction from originally being a import facility to being an export facility with two long term customers in Korgas (Korea) and Gas Natural (International). Natural gas is changing the energy world.

Just how much natural gas can be extracted from shale formations around the world has yet to be determined. But it seems it is unlikely that massive shale gas plays are unique to Canada and the U.S. One could reasonably expect to see another Horn River, Haynesville or Barnett shale gas play somewhere outside North America.

Shale gas projects are underway in France and Poland while exploration is underway in other parts of the EU, Asia, Australia and in China. Some comments suggest that the amount of shale gas in the U.K. would offset or replace declining natural gas production in the North Sea. Certainly a large discovery or two in Europe would be welcome news to offset the influence of power Russia yields on the EU energy market.

And while companies are looking for the next Horn River basin in Europe or Australia, countries around the world are increasingly turning to natural gas as part of their energy strategy for meeting growing energy needs while reducing carbon emissions caused by coal and oil. Hopefully the global supply is high enough to meet the global interest and potential demand from natural gas’ new found standing as a cleaner “bridge fuel”.

In Canada and the U.S. we can nurture an era when natural gas, wind and solar power, combined with a smart grid system and increased usage of natural gas and alternative energy in the transportation network will not only meet energy demand but reduce overall carbon emissions. The plans are already underway in the U.S. championed by influential players like T. Boone Pickens and his Pickens Plan. There is a bill in Congress, the NAT GAS Act (HW 1835 and S. 1408), which will help jump-start the natural-gas-vehicle industry in the United States and has nearly 90 bipartisan co-sponsors in the House making it one of the few substantive bills in Congress with the support of both parties.

Natural gas will change the energy market and do so with economic, environmental and geopolitical impact and consequences.

According to a report from the United Kingdom’s Telegraph, the world is not likely to face a severe fuel shortage, in-so-far as a declining supply of one particular type of fossil fuel is or might be concerned.

The story reports

Tony Hayward, BP’s chief executive, said proven natural gas reserves around the world have risen to 1.2 trillion barrels of oil equivalent, enough for 60 years’ supply – and rising fast.

“There has been a revolution in the gas fields of North America. Reserve estimates are rising sharply as technology unlocks unconventional resources,” he said.

The story continues

Rune Bjornson from Norway’s StatoilHydro said exploitable reserves are much greater than supposed just three years ago and may meet global gas needs for generations.

“The common wisdom was that unconventional gas was too difficult, too expensive and too demanding,” he said, according to Petroleum Economist. “This has changed. If we ever doubted that gas was the fuel of the future – in many ways there’s the answer.”

The article points out that extracting natural gas from oil shale is a “messy” process and has many dangers from chemicals used in the refining process. So, as seems to be the case in any process that involves chemicals and heat there may be consequences to bear and costs to pay … maybe consequences impossible to bear and costs to expensive to pay.

For the United States, the article offers

As for the US, we may soon be looking at an era when gas, wind and solar power, combined with a smarter grid and a switch to electric cars returns the country to near energy self-sufficiency.

Not only might there be an abundant supply of the stuff, but if those that tout (as opposed to those that doubt) are correct, if the supply is actually developed, it could tip the economic fortunes of several countries upside down and might wreak financial havoc in some countries. You can read the article and follow other links to try to grasp the reasons this might happen GAS OR HOT AIR

HRN has repeatedly written about the emerging long term importance of natural gas in today’s

HRN has repeatedly written about the emerging long term importance of natural gas in today’s “going green” economy. And it seems that the natural gas industry itself has started to realize their new found importance as well and started to collectively promote natural gas as a low carbon “bridge fuel”. Natural gas has now reached a level of importance that makes it critical and indispensable as an energy commodity.

It is only a matter of time before carbon begins to carry an internationally accepted cost. This cost will then be levied on all products and services that produce carbon emissions in delivering their product or service. This will effectively make low and zero carbon energy more affordable and more price competitive against oil and coal.

There are three key areas that have changed

Low Carbon fuel - natural gas emits 50% less carbon then coal and 30% less then oil (gasoline, diesel). In the “green economy” natural gas is undeniably the cleanest fossil fuel and will only increase in importance to countries wanting to reduce carbon emissions and remain competitive in a market where carbon carries a heavy cost.

Unconventional Gas – the fundamentals of natural gas as a long term energy resource have dramatically changed. Shale gas in the Horn River basin is estimated at up to 600 Trillion cubic feet in place. Technology continues to improve and continues to reduce the overall cost of extracting the natural gas from the shale formations.

Liquified Natural Gas (“LNG”) – an international network of LNG terminals and freighters expands the market for natural gas producers and makes natural gas a global commodity like oil and coal. A global market will have a major impact on the natural gas industry and will potentially settle the price fluctuations.

At the 24th World Gas Conference (“WGC”) in Buenos Aires, Argentina, natural gas producers are relishing in their new found importance in the global energy marke but recognize the challenges it faces with a global recession supressing demand.

At the conference, George Kirkland, Chevron Corp.’s vice president for global upstream and gas told the stated;

“The fact is – natural gas has come of age. What was once a second prize to oil is now a premium commodity.”

Kirkland referrred to an International Energy Agency (“IEA”) report that has estimated that global demand for natural gas to increase by 50% by 2030 and that in order to meet such a demand increase would require investments of about $227 billion a year over the next 20 years, or a total of $5.5 trillion. Kirkland went on to state;

“Without continued investment, natural gas will simply not be available to meet demand and drive economic growth.”

Kirkland expressed optimism that natural gas would play a major part in the global energy matrix going forward, especially in light of the need to reduce emissions and sees natural gas will be a larger part of Chevron’s future growth.

“I am confident that the importance of natural gas to the world’s energy portfolio will continue to grow. And I am confident that natural gas will redefine the world’s energy equation in the 21st Century.”

Rune Bjørnson, Vice President for Natural Gas at StatoilHydro, added his voice to the growing momentum supporting natural gas as a key energy source to reducing carbon emissions.

“I see natural gas as an important vehicle into a low-emissions future. Gas contains less carbon than oil and much less than coal,” stated Mr. Bjørnson.

Canada is a major natural gas producer and should play close attention to the growing importance being placed on natural gas globally. Canada needs to leverage this valuable low-carbon resource through increased domestic use of natural gas and decreased use of oil and coal in electricity generation and transportation. Canada is a net exporter of natural gas. It can easily increase its domestic usage of natural gas in a coordinated effort to reduce carbon emissions and still have surplus available for export. If Canada does not increase the use of this valuable domestic low carbon resource, it will be exported to the competitive benefit of other countries.

Los Angelas Times: Natural Gas to play bigger role at Chevron

I tillegg må Husbanken rustes opp betraktelig. Husbanken må kunne tilby fordelaktige boliglån med fast, lav rente (f.eks. 2 %) og lang avdragstid (f.eks. 50 år).

Rødt vil ha skattelette for folk flest.

From the Financial Times:

Today, al-Kasim is well known and liked within the older generation of Norway’s oil community (for whom his impromptu visit to the Ministry in May 1968 has entered the folklore). Beyond that limited circle, however, he is virtually unknown. The big newspapers have not profiled him; an internet search reveals little. I first learned of his story by coincidence, when a Norwegian development official mentioned him in an off-hand remark. The government has an ambitious aid programme (now called “Oil for Development”) to help poor, oil-rich states manage their natural resources. The official pointed out the irony in this, given that “it was an Iraqi guy who helped us set everything up in the first place. Without him we would just have let the American oil companies decide how to do things.” What a great story, I thought, almost too good to be true. But if it was true, how come so few people in Norway knew about it?

Time for people to learn about the Iraqi who saved Norway from the misery of other oil states, Farouk al-Kasim. As the article notes, “Farouk is perhaps the greatest value creator Norway has had.”
(via kottke.org)

I uprioritert rekkefølge vil jeg ta for meg hennes påstander først;

Er det slik at SVs grunnleggende filosofi dreier seg rundt ”out of sight, out of mind” – tankegangen?
