Darayonan is a Cuyonon word that means a place to stay. The lodge is situated in a residential part of Coron town, strategically located along the National Highway. Darayonan Lodge aims to provide its guests with clean and comfortable rooms, good food and quality service. The facilities in this lodge pass the normal standards of travellers: hot and cold shower, all air-conditioned rooms, centralized water system. It’s like you never left home at all. I’ve had a comfortable stay at this lodge.

It’s also probably the only lodge that includes breakfast for two along with the daily room charge. And what’s more, drinking water and coffee is unlimited, no extra charge. I should say that staying at Darayonan is really a value for your money.

Rather than turning off the stimulus taps or pouring more fuel on the economic fire, Ottawa will stand pat with the $61 billion in stimulus spending announced in January, Finance Minister Jim Flaherty said Friday.

“Budget 2010 will be year two of our two-year economic action plan. We will not undertake major new spending initiatives,” he told a business audience at the Empire Club in Toronto.

Flaherty emphasized that Canadians shouldn’t expect emergency stimulus measures to become permanent policy.

He said the temporary stimulus measures announced last January in his budget will end as planned by the end of the next fiscal year.

“Our focus will not be on new initiatives or added stimulus. Our focus will be on following through in getting the measures already announced out the door and into the economy. We will stay on course,” he said.

Approximately 90 per cent of this year’s portion of Ottawa’s stimulus spending program was committed as of September, with 7,500 infrastructure projects identified and more than 4,000 already underway, Flaherty said.

However, he said, economic recovery has been “tentative” so far with “no evidence of firm growth.”

As the global economy shows signs of a recovery, some have suggested policy leaders need to consider withdrawing the unprecedented levels of stimulus they injected, or face rampant inflation.

Flaherty’s message, of ensuring existing funds make it out the door while showing restraint with regards to future spending, struck the right tone with some economists.

“The recovery is very fragile and we haven’t even seen a recovery in private investment yet. That’s why public-sector investment through infrastructure spending is so important,” said Glen Hodgson, chief economist with the Conference Board of Canada. “It’s too early to talk about withdrawing stimulus.”

No tax hikes, Flaherty vows

The government is forecasting a deficit of roughly $56 billion for the current fiscal year. About half of that, some $28 billion, consists of one-time stimulus and support to the automotive industry as well as temporary measures taken to increase benefits for unemployed workers and freeze EI premiums for individuals and businesses, Flaherty said Friday.

Although he was careful to allow the government wiggle room to alter course as events warrant, he was unequivocal on two points: the current government has no plans to raise taxes to balance the budget, nor will it cut transfers to pay off the deficit.

Transfers to provinces and individuals takes up some $100 billion of the government’s approximately $200-billion annual budget.

“If we have to restrain growth when the time comes, we will find that restraint in the remaining $100 billion of federal program spending that is projected to grow at 3.3 per cent a year,” Flaherty said.

Only when a “firm” economic recovery has taken hold will the government move to balance its budget, Flaherty added. The finance minister has said previously that stimulus spending and lower tax revenues will result in five years of budget deficits.

“Act in haste and one risks precipitating another economic slowdown. Wait too long and the result could be chronic deficits Canadians worked too hard to abolish ? the kind of structural deficits that other nations are dealing with right now,” he said.

Flaherty was smart to safeguard transfer payments, as the Chrétien government’s move to cut transfer payments was hugely unpopular in the 1990’s, Hodgson said.

“Even thinking about transfers to other levels of government is very, very difficult,” he said.

When we found out that we could actually stay a night at a working Buddhist temple in Kyoto, my inner history nerd lit up with joy.  I have a fascination with Japanese history, and the temples (and the monks they contain) played a major role in the social, cultural and political development of the country.  As influential as they may have been, austerity has always been central to Buddhist philosophy, and our room, while comfortable, was appropriately sparse.

Kyoto is a quiet, beautiful little town which was a relaxing break from the city life. It also has my newly found favorite place on earth, The Bamboo Forest. I don’t know what it is, perhaps I was a giant panda in a former life, but I am drawn to bamboo and I feel at home when I am around it. I have been to many places in the world that had bamboo but this was the most beautiful and peaceful places I have ever been.

We rented some bikes, rode through the forest and then continued on through the countryside looking for the Golden Pavilion. On the map it seemed like it wasn’t very far, and really, it wasn’t (maybe 5 miles or so). However, it was up and down steep hills almost the entire way. It was very pretty and quite enjoyable… for maybe the first mile or so. It continued to be pretty, but by mile 3 Meg was not very happy. After it was over, we were both glad we had done it, though. It wasn’t every day we got to see the back roads of Kyoto, so up close and personal.

Luckily, the ride back from the Golden Pavilion was mostly downhill. We pack up and headed out to Osaka, which was only a half hour train ride away. We both couldn’t wait to check into our hotel to take a shower and then head out in search of our favorite Japanese snack, Tako Yaki.

Our family was  at Disney World a few years ago when God handed us one of His little blessings. Disney World is a huge place — 107 acres huge, to be exact. You could walk around for days without seeing someone you know. My wife and I decided to do our own thing while our children sought out the really cool stuff. We parted at 9 a.m. and were planning a rendezvous around 6 p.m.

At about 2 p.m., my wife and I got a craving for tacos. We looked at our map and made our way to a Spanish-sounding place for Mexican food. We had just sat down with our food when we heard, “Hi, Mom. Hi, Dad.” Our three amigos had, at the same time, a hankering for a wet burrito.

Ten minutes after they joined us, a violent summer storm ripped through the park with whipping winds, heavy rain and loud thunder. My wife commented, “I’d be a wreck if the kids weren’t with us during this!” It seemed that God had orchestrated our meeting.

Former Hart Trophy winner Peter Forsberg informed Vancouver Canucks general manager Mike Gillis that he will remain in Sweden this season and not attempt another comeback in the NHL.

Gillis confirmed the news after speaking with Forsberg on Monday morning. On February 25, 2008, Forsberg signed a contract with the Colorado Avalanche for the remainder of the season, but played in just nine games due to a groin injury.

Forsberg will play the remainder of the season in Sweden with league club MoDo.

First of all- a huge thanks to everyone who came out to our CD release party yesterday! We had a great turnout, even on a cold and rainy Saturday afternoon and got the chance to make some new friends and fans. We had an awesome time playing for everyone and were very lucky to share the stage with Stay, Nemes, Letterday, Socratic and our friend Andrew Morse from Await Rescue, who joined us on stage for “Nowhere to Go.” All of the bands were so nice and they all played fantastic sets. In my view, the song, “Ambulance,” by Eisley on the new EP, “Fire Kite,” was born for moments like this.

Intentionally or not, Eisley, a group from Tyler, Texas, made up of four sibling twenty-somethings and a cousin, has written a song that could fit nicely in the “Grey’s Anatomy” genre of music, an unlikely category that has emerged since the TV show debuted in 2005. Grey’s Anatomy has featured a who’s who of cool young artists, including KT Tunstall, Ingrid Michaelson, Anna Nalick, Brandi Carlile, Peter Bjorn and John, The Bird and the Bee and Feist.

In recent years, Eisley has toured with several well-known bands, including (you may have seen this coming) “Grey’s Anatomy” soundtrack alumni Coldplay, Snow Patrol, The Fray and Gomez.
