This is the first freehand unscheduled post in a while. And as such contains ramblings and general musings.

I was looking on eBay today, as I was searching for hardware needed by a client without funding and a light wallet. I was comparing the prices to the list prices for the RFQ and saw a Cisco Certification book offered for $4.95 (Intn’l shipping $12.99). I obviously looked at Amazon, and it was being offered there for $2.07 (No intn’l shipping).

I realized that for somebody, such as me, who wanted to make profit in the margins and had an application which bought the popular/profitable eBay/Amazon items from Amazon and sold them on eBay. That person could have the money charged to the company PayPal account and use this money to recharge the company creditcard.

As usual, this is something that I haven’t build, or tested.

Who am I right now? What name do I respond to? What signature do I give as I sign off on an email?

Well, that depends on what email I am answering or who is calling on the phone. You see it’s not so easy when part of you lives stealth. Your life starts to divide in a weird way and some things fall on the “new” side like the new school the kids are attending, writing the book, doing gender advocacy work and some things fall on the “old” side like my past career, friends from the old school and my larger group of acquaintances before Hope’s transition. It might sound easy to reconcile both sides, but it is not.

Here’s the tricky part about stealth. Most everything that identified me before (Hope’s transition) identified me as a mom to 2 sons. I regularly said and wrote stories about “my boys” and I can’t erase that part of my history no matter how hard I try. It’s out there. Most of my career and my social groups have nothing to do with my child’s gender identity so it shouldn’t be an issue, right? Wrong. Constantly people ask how the “boys” are mentioning them by name as I cringe in my seat waiting for my panic attack to pass. Keep smiling Jen. What to say? In that moment I am left at a crossroads where in a split second I need to decide whether I address the situation honestly and discuss Hope’s transition or divert the subject never answering the question at all. I’ll be honest with you, this process still gives me the hives.

Living stealth means there are some people you tell and some you don’t. You need to decide quickly in most cases. And for me, that is a slippery slope. Who is the gossip? Who would take this information and use it against us? What if I tell someone from the “old” life and they interact with someone from my “new” life? What happens then? When should we just maintain our privacy? When is it appropriate? Who can I trust?

It’s like I have a foot in two worlds and they constantly intersect leaving me to trip and fumble as I move forward. At my support group for parents of transgender kids, I sometimes find myself so envious of the parents of older children. They can simply tell their friends about their child’s transition and move on. Take it or leave it style. If the other person has an issue, the parents can say “Talk to (my child) about it.” And there it is, a clean break, a new start. Their adult age children can fend for themselves, whereas, my little one cannot. She looks to me to make sense of this journey and sometimes I fear she finds me with my head inside the proverbial map trying to find my way.

I remind myself that it’s going to take time so I need to be patient and gentle with myself. I wish there was a guidebook so my mistakes wouldn’t threaten Hope’s safety and well being. That is all I care about. Not me or my itching, but her. I don’t want anything bad to happen to her and I struggle that this tiny little wish is completely beyond my control. Perhaps that is why I cling to this page and release the struggle. Half of me needs to get it out and the other half needs to prevent another parent from making the same mistakes I do. Still the two sides of me tug and pull like children wanting to go in two different directions.

I spent around 7 consecutive nights, playing the utter stunner of a game that is Assassin’s Cr

I spent around 7 consecutive nights, playing the utter stunner of a game that is Assassin’s Creed II. When I finally got to the end of the single-player story mode, I was already on the lookout for another immersive single-player experience…

…Unfortunately for both myself and Pandemic Studios/Electronic Arts, a game called ‘The Saboteur’ got in my way and broke my flow, so-to-speak. It’s rare that a game does one thing that can put me off it within the first 5 minutes of gaming so for me to be confronted with four of these major issues is a travesty.

Yes, yes. I realise that this is barely enough time to build any sort of “review” of a game so rather than reviewing it in any normal capacity, I’m going to try to critique what little I did play.

The game is set in Nazi-occupied Paris. It’s protagonist is Sean Devlin, an Irish national who finds himself in Paris, drowning his sorrows after the death of his friend (I presume this is what is going on, as we are shown an irritating sequence where Sean is drinking, then looking at a B&W photograph of said friend, and so on). Sean, according to the Wikipedia page for the game, is based upon the renowned war hero William Grover-Williams. Oh dear, I hear you cry, another game based upon a war hero (much like the recent title, Velvet Assassin – which was based on the war-time spy Violette Szabo, who was brought to the public’s attention by the film ‘Carve Her Name With Pride’).

Firstly, the game’s theme immediately hit a sore-point for me anyway, though I tried to get past it, if only for my own reviewing integrity’s sake.

Personally, I’m beginning to tire of all these WWII games. At first, I didn’t find them too difficult to ignore. I figured I didn’t really enjoy games like Medal of Honor anyway, so why let a game which allows you to play the part of one of the men who landed on the beaches during the Battle of Normandy bother me. Even after I found myself moving more and more into playing FPS games, I still couldn’t get my head around why someone would want to play a game like Call of Duty 2 or 3 where your central role was to play as a Allied soldier who was slaughtered in occupied France or an Axis trooper who was likely responsible for the slaughter of said Allied soldier.

Medal of Honor: Allied Assault

I think, in general, I have trouble with games that seem to trivialise horrific events of our modern history. This is an aspect of gaming that is all too easy to think of as a wonderful idea when holed up in a cushy development studio in West Hollywood, but when a major market of said games is Europe, there is a possibility that gaps in the market will appear from those who are unwilling to play a game based on such a difficult era for this continent. The mere fact that the WWII idea has now crossed genres and started appearing in the third-person stealth/open-world genres may be a step too far for me. Never mind the fact that they are also taking the personalities and actions of people who helped to bring the war to a close and turning them into pathetically stringy and trivial storylines in sub-standard failures of games.

I just feel that it detracts from their importance, that’s all.

My feeling is much the same with ‘deathmatch’ modes on WWII FPSs. Team Deathmatch? Team Post-traumatic Stress Disorder, more like.

Secondly, the poor voice acting grated upon me almost instantly. Nowhere on t3h int3rw3bs am I able to find conclusive proof of the games cast list, but I could swear that none of the accents I heard within my brief play were authentic. What I heard was clichéd, pseudo-French, German and Irish accents that almost caused me to spit out my coffee in laughter. By the end of the first ‘cinematic’, my amusement had turned to disappointment and I was just shaking my head at the sheer horror of it all.

Thirdly… A game that finds it appropriate to begin it’s opening sequence with a ‘zoom-out’ from the tassles on a poorly animated French strippers nipples is a game that is making up what it lacks in content or depth with blatent and gratuitous nudity. This sort of show can be compared to that of your average souped-up Subaru Impreza driver and the sarcastic connotations that carries when spotted by you or me. Also, I was disappointed to see a graphical standard that wouldn’t have looked out of place at the end of the previous console generation. It simply wasn’t what I would expect to see in the latter half of 2009.

A stripper, c. 1940

Finally… I experienced a poor control system when it came to the beginning of the first mission. It was impossible to get Sean to do anything other than run when he moved and when I eventually found where I was going and got into a vehicle, I found it extremely difficult to drive in a straight line. The driving controls were stiff and unresponsive and made it difficult for me to do any accurate driving at all. Now, anyone who knows me knows that (also, for the information of those who don’t) I’m useless at racing games. But I truly don’t think that this flaw can be entirely attributed to me. In addition, the game seemed to struggle to keep up with the movement of the vehicle result in some very dodgy moments where the scenery around me failed to load properly until I had almost passed through it. Again, I was disappointed.

All these things have resulted in me resigning the game to my ‘Folder of Doom’ ©, a place where titles that I have difficulty playing find themselves rarely to see the light of day again until being handed over the desk of my local games store as a trade-in.

It’s a shame, because it could have been so much better. It’s a pity it seems to have become pre-occupied with performace rather than integrity. Of course, if you feel that ‘The Saboteur’ is the sort of game that would float your proverbial boat, please don’t be put off by my scathing critique. It just a single viewpoint of a disappointed gamer who expects to be disappointed/upset by games that try to use WWII as a selling point. Go play! And feel free to share your views and opinions!

My roommate Jaclyn, for instance, can remember anyone’s schedule after hearing it only once (which is helpful when you need to find someone, but does give her a leg up on stalking). One of my friends from camp, Ali, just knows where everything is happening on camp grounds at all times, whether anyone has told her or not (which is so much fun when we want to hear gossip stealth style). Another roommate of mine, Eileen, knows where everything is in the kitchen, even when we move it without telling her. And my friend Alyssa from home can find every public bathroom within a mile after about 5 minutes of being somewhere.

Really, when you put all these little things together, you could take over the world.

For a while, I was questioning what my power was. At the beginning of semester, I thought perhaps it was my ability to steal any form of kitchen ware or utensil from the dining hall (I would always pay for my food, but I would just walk out with all the plates and such…we have quite a collection now).

But now, I think my true power (though I feel it is subject to change eventually), is the ability to get every teacher of mine to like me, whether I do any work or not. I didn’t notice this so much in high school just because we were a small school and everyone just knew who was smart or could do the work. But now that I’m in college, I’ve had some mean-ish teachers who will call you out for not doing something the way they want. And though the quality of my work is not that great, I’ve never gotten in trouble with a teacher and have gotten extensions for stupid reasons when others haven’t.

I’m still trying to figure this out and see how far I can push it, but for now it’s coming in handy.

Some mornings we head to the local coffeehouse and have a little breakfast for the kids and a little caffeine jolt for me. Last week’s visit didn’t feel any different, except for the fact we snagged the coveted window seat. The kids like the puffy seat cushions and I like the fact we can sit and relax during breakfast. It was like a scene from a movie. Blissful, calm. And then it happened.

“Mom, I see James, from my old school standing in line. I want to go.” Hope shrunk in her seat as if she could make herself invisible. The panic on her face snapped me out of my morning haze and in a nanosecond I had scooped up all the contents of the table including my son and was walking steadily out the door. We didn’t say a word until we all got to the car. Bless him, Will was still drinking his milk when he said “What was that?”. As I explained, I noticed Hope still had a look of despair on her face.

“I know you didn’t want to talk with James today and that is okay.” I threw it out there like I was just making small talk. You could see her brain was buzzing with the flood of what-ifs. Did he see her? Will he tell the friends from the old school about her? “Hope, honey, you never have to answer to anyone else for who you are. You never have to be ashamed. Be proud of who you are,” I added as I watched her wiggle in her booster seat. “There may come a day when you feel good about talking with James and that is okay too. You be the judge of when that is and do what makes you feel comfortable,” my voice cracked a little as I spoke.

“Thank you for getting us out of there Mom. I’m not ready to talk to him.” Hope replied with a tiny smile and a little shake of her head telling me everything would be okay. “There isn’t anything I wouldn’t do to help you kids. I am here to protect you,” rattled out of my mouth as if I was reminding myself as much as them. The adrenaline kicked in harder than a triple shot.

The original Assassin’s Creed and its protagonist, Altair, seemed to divide the world of gamers. There were those of us who understood its open-world aim and stringy-but-interesting storyline and were able to play it without too much judgement and then there were those of us who were unable to get past the bizarre science-fiction setting of the actual storyline and its all-too-linear missions to really enjoy the game underneath it all.

In the end, this left Ubisoft with a game that was a commercial success but that left a sizable chunk of its audience desperately crying out for improvements in the sequel. One of the most astonishing things about Assassin’s Creed II is that the opinions of us gamers got taken on board during development.

To date, I have played around 10 hours of the game (equivalent to around 36%, according to the in-game statistics, which sounds like nothing at all…but believe me, that couldn’t be further from the truth – this is a fairly sizable game).

Since the evening that was mentioned by Cameron in the previous post, I have yet to actually find myself dragged out of game-play and back into the dreary grey science-fiction world so familiar to us from the first game. As you will no doubt find out upon playing, that drab back-drop from the original game is no more, as in the beginning moments of the game, we escape from the Abstergo Labs with Lucy, a returning character from the original game, to a warehouse where a group of Assassin’s have set up their base and have their own Animus system (This is also where we get to meet a scarily life-like Danny Wallace!) As soon as the game-play drifts into the memories of Ezio Auditore da Firenze, it is easy to find yourself swept away in the immersive world of 15th-century Italy, with all the satire and humour you would expect to find! Again, as Cameron has mentioned, the script-writing is particularly impressive (especially when you consider how lacking it was in the original). Personally, the times I find myself most amused by it all is when something you found yourself thinking moments earlier is suddenly echoed in Ezio’s narrative.

That being said, it would be easy to criticize the story by mentioning that it is slightly clichéd (avenging the death of your family, and all that) but regardless of this, it has been enjoyable so far!

One of the things that struck me the most about the plot of the game is how much better it seems to flow than the original. We are now given choices as to whether we choose to proceed with a certain mission at a certain time. Yes, we will eventually have to go and do certain missions in order to proceed with the storyline, but until that point, we are free to explore the expansive world of the game, with new areas regularly opening up on further completion of missions. The view-points (and the stupidly enjoyable leap-of-faith moments from them) are still present, but in addition we now have courier missions, races and assassination contracts that we are able to carry out. These bring a ‘free-flow’ aspect to the game and are enjoyable spacers to have a bit of fun with between missions.

There are also side-projects (for want of a better word), some reminiscent of Fable II, such as the reconstruction and improvement of the Auditore family villa and accompanying town/fort. This also brings you an income too, which is quite handy for picking up some of the new items that you find in-game, such as smoke bombs, medicine vials and poison. You also are able to do small side quests, involving the infiltration of landmarks to find ‘assassin’s seals’ which in turn enable you to unlock an room containing the armour (passed down through generations of assassin’s) of Altair.

These are both fun and challenging and will serve to prolong your enjoyment of the game. There is also a plot-angle where you get to learn about ‘Subject 16’ and find out ‘the truth’ via the means of puzzles/mini-games, but I’ll leave all that for you to discover.

The control system, in particular the free-running, is a lot looser than in the original game and is entirely better for it. Combat has also improved opening up more options during fights, like the ability to taunt or disarm your opponent. These enable you to develop your own combat style and play in the way you want to.

In addition to the game-play aspects, the graphics have improved substantially too. I, personally, found the original game to be quite glitchy on occasion. Granted, it was mostly after I had just fallen from a substantial height. On reflection, it could have been my fault(!)

The fly-overs and view-point synchronisations are breath-taking, giving you beautiful (albeit, virtual) views of renaissance Florence, Tuscany and Venice amongst other places. Ezio is beautifully animated, as are a number of the non-player characters in the game. Even the general peasant/gentry population are smooth and detailed. It is easy to see, looking around the towns and cities at ground level, just how much effort has been but into this game. Ezio can swim too! Thank goodness! It was extremely frustrating with Altair to think that you were getting to safety only to realise that you’d fallen into a river and drowned, having to start an entire mission again.

All these little tweaks and improvements have not only created a game that is a major improvement upon the first of the franchise, but a game that is able to stand-out on its own, regardless of its previous incarnation. The final result of Ubisoft’s labour is a polished title, free from most of the shortcomings of a lot of other games in its genre. In my opinion, it is an utter joy to play and I feel that it is capable of impressing many people: those who enjoyed the original, those who found the original irritating and difficult to cope with, and those who are taking their first step into the realm of Assassin’s Creed.

Wanna be a spy? A detective? Maybe you wanna spying your girl/boyfriend to know are they cheating or not without worry to get caught? Wanna know your children’s private life? Or maybe you just wanna fool your friends to have some fun with pretending to be someone? If yes, that is absolutely possible! With spying tools, you can make it all happens.

For example is the tools named “StealthCard” (for your mobile phone). You can change your caller ID signature to display whatever number you want on the other person’s caller ID. You can change your voice become someone else. And you can digitally records all of your outgoing phone call (an effective way to proving someone who tell a lie). And the most exciting from all above is… “You Won’t Get CAUGHT!!!” You can make a phone call and remain totally anonymous.

StealthCard is just one of spying tools among many of them. Today, many of people out there who have their own spying tools. The price is depend on how far of those tools can track peoples without known, but they’re relatively affordable. So, now you can become private detective on your own life. But don’t forget, of course it is possible for you being spied on by someone else.

Just listened to the message from the McDonald’s manager to a transgender applicant. I can’t seem to get over how angry the voice sounds on the tape. “You will never..” haunts me in the weirdest way. I think because even though you don’t see this person, you hear them loud and clear. The contempt in their voice is palpable.

I am the first to say that I don’t know all the details of this story. I just stumbled upon it while on Twitter. But it started me thinking about how being transgender or even having a transgender child affects employment. Recently I heard a friend say that she may have to change jobs because her child’s transgender identity is a hot topic in the office. She has been ostracized because her co-workers choose to discuss and evaluate her personal life publicly. When did we lose our sense of decency people?

Knowing the angst I feel with my child attending school stealth, I can only begin to imagine how difficult it is for trans adults to find and maintain employment. Unless you have had Sex Reassignment Surgery you cannot have your birth certificate changed where we live. Your birth name and gender marker is on every document you need to provide for employment when you think of it. How to remain stealth and still work?

Unfortunately once a person is identified as transgender they are a target for hatred and violence. That is the reality today and it breaks my heart. What will it take for people to understand that there is no deceit in being your true self? Your gender identity should not force you to share personal information with a world that is not yet ready to understand.

So what is the silver lining? That one more story is told. One more lesson is learned. And one more transgender individual gets the rights that they deserve for just being a person like everyone else.

Assassin’s Creed II makes major improvements upon the first game in the series (AC), by provid

Assassin’s Creed II makes major improvements upon the first game in the series (AC), by providing players with more variety in missions; with practically 200 missions to boot. The combat system has been tweaked, with new style assassinations ranging from “air”, “ledge” and “haystack”, while blending takes on new shapes with the aid of female escorts who seductively distract guards for a handsome fee. Altaïr Ibn La-Ahad is a descendant of Ezio Auditore da Firenze, a young nobleman who becomes an assassin after his father is betrayed and killed. Desmond Miles continues to be the focus of an upgraded machine; the “Animus” 2.0., and still seems unable to decipher what appears to be a “bleeding effect” of his genetic code.

One thing I find useful in AC2 is the new “Fast Travel Station”, which places you at any major point of destination previously explored for a small fee. The game now features an economy system, allowing you to acquire larger amounts of income based upon investing money towards renovations for the city. Tailor shops provide dyeing services, enabling color configuration of Ezio’s attire. This feature is distinct from most games I’ve played, with the changes of color even appearing during in-game cut scenes; something I’ve yet to see take place in any other game. “Art Merchents” sell paintings made during the Italian Renaissance which give clues about the “Apple of Eden”, and feathers are found atop buildings that are then placed in a chest, comforting Ezio’s mother.

The “Leap of Faith” is always exciting to perform, but it could be time to add a new variation to this unique AC action. The new weapons are wonderful, and the game itself is visually detailed; displaying alluring and lush graphics with deep brooding sounds provided by Jesper Kyd. There are “Assassination Tombs” which individually contain a combined total of “six seals” that unlock a hidden mystery through the attainment of Altaïr’s accoutrements. Despite these advancements, the game still seems somewhat repetitive in its presentation albeit much more diverse in its choice of assignments. The biggest blunder that this series continues to suffer from is that the artificial intelligence of the non-player characters (NPCs) is incredibly unintelligent. That being said, there is more than enough potential for this action-adventure stealth trilogy to end on a high note, with its final installment (perhaps) that’s yet to be released, Assassin’s Creed III.

I give this game a score of 9/10.

On wed I went to meet the peeps at the skatepark, decided to try on kim’s spare pair of blades. The feelings of being free was so awesome I decided I had to get a new pair.

Off to queensway on Thurs. After much moping around and deliberation, and due to sizing problems I got the ones fitted with abec7 bearings, which meant they are super smooth and effortless to blade around in. After warming up and seeing how much fun the peeps were having on the ramp, I went up too. My knees knocked against each other a lil but I knew I cld do it. When the others weren’t looking I went down the ramp quietly and they cheered. Hence the nickname, stealth. Awesomeness!!!

Friday night, a jog in the park then off to blade at kim’s. Her carpark was so humid and stuffy it didn’t take much before one began to perspire profusely. It was a good run. I tried to do the squats and on bended knee, the feeling of getting it is sweeeeeeet!

Ahhh such bliss.

So cool! Jump out of a plane, land and kill people! Yay! What else could you want besides really good tiramisu.

“Yves Rossy, aka “Jet man” and “Fusion Man,” has grabbed headlines with his jet-powered flights with an 8-foot wing strapped to his back. But he could be joined sometime soon by commandos on an airborne assault.

Last year, Rossy successfully flew 22 miles across the English Channel. Last week’s attempt to cross from Africa to Europe by flying from Morocco to Spain was less successful. Strong winds were against him, and Rossy ended up in the sea three miles short of the coast. Undaunted, the Swiss former military pilot now plans to fly across the Grand Canyon.

Rossy has reportedly refused requests from the military and stated that his powered wing, which cost more than $190,000 to develop, is only for aviation enthusiasts. However, he’s not the only one in the wingsuit business.

The Special Parachute and Logistics Consortium, is a German venture between two companies with expertise in this area. SPELCO produces a variety of parachute systems, helmets, oxygen supplies and other gear and services. But their most eye-catching project is the Gryphon Next Generation Parachute System (PDF, pictured).

This is described as a modular upgrade for parachute systems for use in “high-altitude, high-opening” jump missions, typically carried out by Special Forces. This 6-foot wing gives a glide ratio of 5:1, which means that a drop from 30,000 feet will allow you to glide about 30 miles. The makers estimate that this would take around 15 minutes, giving an average speed of about 60 miles an hour.

gryphon2“All equipment is hidden in a lifting body optimized for stealth, the radar-signature is extremely low,” says the Gryphon data sheet (PDF). “Detection of incoming Gryphon soldiers by airborne or ground radar will be extremely difficult.” Read More…“

It has finally been made official, the european release of Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker will be on May 27th 2010. Look forward to some major co-op ass kicking with a spy you love. The franchise has improved with each sequel and as for the PSP versions this is bound to follow the same pattern.

In Peace Walker there will be a lot of new elements added to the series, not to mention the co-op feature which supports up to four players. If you’re confused or unaware of what the MGS series is I recommend you visit wikipedia and read… a lot.

Today we went in the Mac Suite in music (the teacher wasn’t in so we had to make yet another Powerpoint on a style of music) and nobody did much work. There was apparently two rows of people playing my game Stealth. Now I know it’s popular I think it’s time for a sequel. It shouldn’t take long because I can use the first game as a template, the only thing I need is inspiration for detailed level design. It gets boring thinking of levels and you get into the attitude where you try to stump the player with a ‘They’ll never get past this!’ kind of level. Also I think I’ll get James to help (It’s MattandJamesGames after all) so it’s slightly different.
When making sequels you need to change the game significantly to avoid being accused of reinventing the wheel, but not change certain parts and alienate the core fans.
Practice makes perfect…
