You can choose a la carte from the menu, different portions, etc.  Or you can go for the buffet.  The buffet has standard items, good enough for folks like you and me.  On weekends, the dinner buffet is $21.90 per pax.

To order the buffet, you choose from this list.  You can only order two portions of each at a time. An egg costs $0.50 more and white rice is $1.00 more.

You order and it all comes at once.  This was our first round.  We had beef, chicken, pork, fish, pork belly, vegetables, seaweed, dumplings, prawns and pig stomach and liver.

Second round with more vegetables and meat and dumplings.

You can choose the soups that you want.  There are a few selections, some you have to upgrade money for.  Like Bak Kut Teh soup.  But the no charge ones are chicken, fishhead and tom yum soup.  You can have half and half.  We went for fishhead and tom yam.

And then you add everything in and start to eat!

Not bad, we definitely ate our money’s worth here.

This is an image of Steamboat’s amazing Mountain after a recent event in Steamboat. This is one of the many reasons I love Steamboat. Never a dull moment. NEVER.

Steamboat will have its own #AffirmationMonday post. As will pretty much all of my friends here. But, lately I have been feeling super blessed to live in this gorgeous town and area and would like to share why. Enter the top nine reasons I love Steamboat (Ski Town, USA and Bike Town, USA).

9) The mountains. In Colorado you expect mountains. I have to admit, when I first arrived, I was somewhat let down. After driving through high, craggy peaks, Steamboat’s peaks seemed mellow and somewhat boring. But they grow on you. The Aspen change into piercing yellow in the autumn. Trails cover them. Running across the gentle inclines and descents allow me to get lost in the forest, the moment and myself. The mountains are gorgeous in their own unique way. Just like us.

8) The active culture. Steamboat is a bubble. A bubble of fit and active people. People come to Steamboat to play on its trails, in its mountains and on its rivers. They climb, hike, backpack, fish, ski, run, bike, unicycle and truly enjoy God’s playground.

7) The skiing. I think it is telling of Steamboat that the main reason I came here is this far up the list. Not telling of the skiing (it is world class), telling of the other items on the list. One of my goals before moving here was to not become a snow snob. I wanted to enjoy every day. And ski every day like I wouldn’t have another. That lasted until my first powder day here. It is trademarked Champagne Powder for a reason. Skiing through knee-deep fluff in an Aspen glade will change your life forever. You will NEVER be the same. And now I am a snow snob. Thanks, Steamboat.

6) The sunsets. I am a sucker for a good sunset. The sunsets here are resplendent. In the autumn, the rays splash through the changing Aspen. They illuminate the forest in oranges, yellows and reds and then pinks, deep purples and dark blues. In the winter, the intensity mellows some, but alpenglows combined with sunsets inundate and engulf you in piercing and soft colors. Everyday creates a unique but equally stunning descent of the sun behind the foreseeable earth.

5) Partners in Routt County. Partners is the nonprofit I work for. And is the other big reason I moved to Steamboat. I had some options but I chose Partners because I wanted to spend a year being a voice for an underserved and represented population (poor and at-risk youth and their families). It has exceeded my expectations. Mainly because of the people I work with. They are passionate about helping youth. They work hard and play hard. They don’t just allow me to go for runs in the middle of the day, they tell me to have fun when I leave and ask how it was or how my training is going when I return. They are great people and it is a great organization.

4) The Nest. The Nest is the name for the home where I live. It is welcoming. It has positive energies and vibes. It is made up of caring and loving people. It has absolutely been a perfect living situation that I am probably taking for granted. It is a home.

3) Running. There are trails. Lots of trails. Through forests. Across creeks. Up mountains. Down mountains. From my front door, I am within two miles of about four different trail systems. All in national forests. In the past two weeks, I have seen a family of elk, a family of moose (meese?) and a family of bears all running within a two mile radius of my front door. On a weekly basis, someone walking, running or biking by will give words of encouragement.

2) The people. I have never met a more beautiful, intelligent, caring, compassionate, active, aware, like-minded and healthy population of people. They are welcoming. They share meals. They go into deep conversations quickly. They encourage. They show concern. They are supportive. They are unique. They love life, outdoors and others.

1) Euzoa Bible Church. When I got to Steamboat, I knew no one. I mean, I had talked to my roommate via phone and email, but I didn’t really know anyone. Euzoa’s community took me in immediately. They have shown me love. They have bought me meals and coffee. They have included me. They have been with me. They have been what the church should be. Unfortunately, that does not happen a lot with the Western church. Euzoa is the exception.

My one of my favorite food in the world, 鱼头炉 (fish head steamboat). I suddenly realized that I have been coming to this place for the last 5 years! Time flies and it’s scary how I was only 22 when I had my first taste of their awesome soup..

I have since brought my family and friends to this place once a month at least without fail (other than those dubai times)…

I seriously think I deserve some loyalty card or discount!!

Anyway, Baby Julian is turning one month old coming Thursday and we celebrated it yesterday.
It was supposed to be just a simple celebration where we wanted to invite family and close friends/colleagues and we will order food from a caterer.

Well, but the ambitious me always hope to be slightly different (yet not outrageously OTT), especially when it comes to our cutie boy. So what got me started was when I googled around for man yue boxes to give away. I came across a few people who does customised cupcakes and shortlisted 3 – Cotton Candy Bakeshop(http://cottoncandybakeshop.blogspot.sg/), Charlotte Grace (http://www.charlotte-grace.com/) and Colouritsweet (http://www.colouritsweet.com/). Frankly speaking our first choice was Cotton Candy Bakeshop as her designs were really unique and packaging nice but she was going to be overseas when we needed the cupcakes so she could not take our order. As for Charlotte Grace, the shop is very near our place (hence easy collection) but their designs seem more standard. So we decided to go with Colouritsweet.

The lady from Colouritsweet proposed a nautical theme for the customised cupcakes, which set me looking around for nautical related decorations for the celebration. In the end we bought a set of “It’s a Boy” balloons (with a big cute whale), ordered nautical cupcakes for the cupcake tier, DIY-ed a small signage (containing details of the full month celebration), food labels, nautical circles and a mini banner (“Welcome Aboard”). We also bought some salmon pieces that we always eat for steamboat and labelled them “Catch of the Day” (yes…it’s a bit stretching it too far maybe?). It wasn’t a lot but I felt that I had to do something special for my boy. ZY helped out too even though he thinks I’m quite bo liao haha, especially since he had to help me print stuff from his office, which he is rather embarrassed to.

The day went well though it rained (fits the nautical theme?!)…but overall I liked the food (Angeli Catering is the best!) and the cupcakes! I think I managed to spend some time talking to my different groups of friends too except for BB6 (Sorry Weiliang, Alvin and Joyce! We’ll make it up to you guys this Sat…). Most importantly, Baby Julian was well behaved and didn’t throw tantrums (phew!). We should have taken more photos though but forgot to…but I guess one cannot be too greedy to have it all.

I made a song cover today with Dalu hahaha. And it’s the first time I’m actually doing this! I’ve had a lot of fun filming that, and I will definitely do more covers in the future! Sorry if I’m gonna hurt your ears LOL.

Anyway, we were there at Dalu’s house for our Gaybro’s reunion dinner, but I will talk about that another day instead cos’ I’m dead tired now and the purpose of this post is just to say I’ve made a song cover. TADAH, objective met!

Well that’s pretty much everything I want to talk about already! So until next time peeps!

-20 Degrees Fahrenheit, if that doesn’t send chills through your bones I don’t know what will. That’s the kind of weather I flew into in Steamboat Colorado. What it lacked in warmth though it made up in beauty. Definitely a trip to be remembered. Great food, snow, and people.

If you ever have a chance to get off the main path and search around for the lesser known things you’d be surprised with what you may discover. So next time you’re going to all the “must see” spots take a left instead of a right and see where the road takes you (with a map handy of course)!

Are you a rowboat, a sailboat, or a steamboat?¹

Everyone fits in one of these categories in one way or another.  When someone uses a rowboat they depend on their own strength to get them anywhere.  When someone uses a sailboat, they have to depend on the winds to carry them where they want to go.  And when someone uses a steamboat or motor powered boat, they have an engine that provides the movement.

As Christians, we often want to live life like a rowboat.  We want to “pull ourselves up by our bootstraps,” and grow.  Everything is up to us…

The success we achieve…

How our kids are raised…

Our retirement…

But sometimes we live a sailboat life.  We depend on the prevailing winds to carry us, and when there is no wind we don’t go anywhere.  We remember the highs of our life and are always depending on the next mountain experience…

Camp…

A moving worship service…

A vacation…

A conference…

A spiritual retreat…

And when we aren’t on the mountain, we get depressed and discouraged. We mistakenly think that God only shows up on the mountain and not in everyday, ordinary life.

Ultimately, we must live like we are a steamboat.  Our lives don’t depend on our own strength or what we can accomplish.  Our walk of faith doesn’t depend on a particular wind blowing at a certain time.  Our faith is fueled by the Spirit of the Living God.

Therefore, on this particular Monday, you have a choice.  Are you going to try to do everything in your own strength?  If you do, I can promise you that this Monday will be no different from other ones.  You may do well today, but what about tomorrow?  What about the next day?  You could also choose to let the winds of life carry you.  Maybe today your boss or teacher or coach will compliment you, but what about tomorrow?  What if they say something discouraging then?  Don’t let those discouraging winds stop your growth.

Choose today to be a steamboat.  Let the power of the Creator of the Universe fill you with life.  And take a break from doing it on your own and looking for the right winds.

Because today is more than a Monday; it’s a day where God can show up in amazing ways.  You just have to be looking.

At the time of the explosion the Kate was just in rear of the A.P. Hurt; both boats were stationary – the Hurt had stopped to land a box, the Kate came up and made an effort to pass, but not finding sufficient room had backed down a few feet.

Great credit is awarded to Capt. A.P. Hurt for his kindness to the crew of the ill-fated steamer.

The Kate drifted about 33 miles down stream and was then tied up by the men who remained on board. Most of the cargo was insured – all of it ought to have been. The boat is supposed to be not very greatly injured, and nothing in a pecuniary view distressing about it, in comparison with the sad loss of life.

The Kate McLaurin belonged to Messrs. Orrell & Dailey, cost perhaps $6,000, and had been running less than six months.

Aspen Mountain and Vail plan to close for the season Sunday afternoon, along with Breckenridge, Beaver Creek, Copper Mountain, Eldora, Monarch Mountain, Silverton Mountain, Snowmass and Steamboat.

Winter Park and Aspen Highlands plan to close April 21. Loveland’s closing day is May 5, and Arapahoe Basin is scheduled to close June 2.

The trade group Colorado Ski Country USA has said skier visits at its member resorts through February were down compared with the same period last winter, partly because of a dryer start to the season. Spring storms are bringing more snow though.

The National Weather Service say 5 to 10 inches of snow could fall in Aspen and Vail late Saturday through Sunday.

Last night I had steamboat with Lin and Co, as a farewell Lin thing. It was good fun. I’m going to miss him very much.

Think of Wrestlemania III and your first thought may well be of Andre The Giant getting scooped up and slammed by Hulk Hogan. Yet that bill also included a classic Intercontinental Title bout that pitted Macho Man Randy Savage against Ricky The Dragon Steamboat and it was sublime.

This was storytelling at its best with the match being set up via a number of incidents in previous weeks. Many thought that Steamboat may have to give up wrestling after Savage slammed him in the throat and seriously injured his larynx. Meanwhile, Savage was having problems of his own with George The Animal Steele who had taken a liking to Miss Elizabeth and even kidnapped her at one point to prove his devotion.

As Steamboat returned to seek his vengeance at Wrestlemania III, George Steele accompanied him to the ring to protect him from whatever Savage had planned and of course, if he got to impress Elizabeth then that was even better.

The match, once it got down to it, was action a go-go with some of the fastest paced action and a number of astounding moves. Savage did his usual acrobatics whilst also making sure Elizabeth was kept away from The Animal. Savage eventually stopped using his wrestling skills and once again took to cheating, attempting to take Steamboat out with another bell to the throat, but this time it backfired and Savage was rolled up and Ricky The Dragon Steamboat became the champion and celebrated with the big man.

William Davies’ 1864 diary opens with a list of 19 men from Company A who have given him their photographs.

At Andersonville National Historic Site (see recent posts about Davies‘ stay in the Confederate prison), there is a POW museum with a database listing the nearly 42,000 prisoners who passed through the gates of the camp. Each prisoner’s entry contains such information as name, date of capture, and date of exchange, release, escape, or death.

The first name on the list of men who gave Davies their pictures is G.H. Young. The database shows that George H. Young, of the 95^th Ohio Regiment, Company A, not only made it through Andersonville and two other prisons, he also survived the wreck of the riverboat Sultana, sometimes known as the Titanic of the Mississippi.

In late July of 1864, a month after Davies, Young, and other members of Company A were captured, General William T. Sherman was plotting his assault on Atlanta, 140 miles north of Andersonville. The inhuman conditions at the prison had reached the Northern press, and Sherman sent a detachment of cavalry to serve a dual mission of destroying railroads that supplied Atlanta and liberating Andersonville.

The troops failed in their efforts, but the prospect of 32,000 prisoners released into the Georgia countryside sent a thrill of fear through the area’s residents. In mid-September, when Sherman had taken Atlanta, Davies was among the prisoners who were told they were going to be exchanged. Trainloads of men were shipped out. They had been lied to about the promise of exchange many times, in order to discourage attempts at escape. That’s probably why Davies and his friend Wakeman Bell slipped into the woods while enroute to the exchange point.

They made their way to Sherman’s lines and freedom. Records show that the remaining 17 men of Company A, including George Young, spent time in other prisons, suggesting that that they were not on their way to be exchanged but to fill new prisons that were out of Sherman’s reach. Some of those men were later brought back to Andersonville.

At the end of the war, Union soldiers liberated from Andersonville and Cahawba prisons were mustered out of the army at Vicksburg, where the steamboat Sultana stopped to pick them up and take them home. Young was one of those men.

The ship had spent a day in dock to repair the boiler, which apparently should have been replaced, but the captain didn’t want to lose his government contract to transport the waiting passengers, who were desperate to get home. The boat, which had a legal capacity of 376, headed out with 2400 people aboard on April 27, 1865. When the boiler exploded, the Sultana sank, and an estimated 1600 passengers died. It was the day after John Wilkes Booth’s assassination, so the sinking of the Sultana was crowded out of the headlines.

George Young, however, lived and made it home to Columbus, Ohio, to raise a family. So did William Davies, my great-great-grandfather.

Surrrrrrplise! Jo flew back to Singapore (transit) for a day and surprised me by  calling me out for an impromptu dinner date. It was nice to see her, even if it was for a couple of hours Crazy carrot flew all the way from Australia to Germany in the middle of her school term just for a vacation. Speaking of Australia…

I finally booked my ticket!! It’s still fakin 4 months away, though.

I’ve got nothing interesting to report because I’ve been spending most of my off-work time nestled in bed, watching tv series and movies. Since I’m still waiting for The Raven to load completely, I’m going to share with you some of the shows I’m currently watching.

Apart from the usual (Suits, Homeland, Community, Criminal Minds, Sherlock etc)
In no particular order:

“The Following stars Kevin Bacon as retired FBI agent Ryan Hardy, who is called in to deal with serial killer Joe Carroll (James Purefoy), who he captured nine years ago. While Carroll is trapped in prison, he has spent the last nine years using the Internet to recruit an army of like-minded killers to carry out his objectives… and only Ryan can stop him.”

There’s an eerie intensity about The Following that I really like. Think I would describe the show to be somewhat like a mesh of 24 and Whitechapel. Or maybe as a darker Criminal Minds on steroids. Pumped with suspense, lots of interesting plot twists, and cliffhangers that keep viewers on the edge and wanting more. I also really like how they pay homage to Edgar Allan Poe’s works.

They have some extremely unlikeable characters, though. Like these 2:

Especially the fuk with the half-pout on the right. So happy she was taken off the show after the first episode. Unfortunately Emma(left) is here to stay.

“Spoilt millionaire playboy Oliver Queen is missing-presumed-dead when his yacht is lost at sea. He returns five years later a changed man, determined to clean up the city as a hooded vigilante armed with a bow.”

Arrow is a steaming pile of shit. The storyline has a billion loopholes, the acting is predictable, the dialogue is cheesy, lots of “WTF” and “how the fuck” moments, lots of rehashed and recycled overused scenes. In all seriousness, this melodrama can be best described as a Dark knight knockoff – just look at their synopsis! Granted, the show has some good scenes, is easy to watch and boasts a really good looking cast.

So how did I get hooked?

Think these should suffice.

Also, although he was introduced to the series a little late, Colton Haynes (Teen Wolf) has just been officially promoted to a series regular. More incentive to tune in

Archer is surprisingly brilliant. I don’t really know how to describe this animated comedy. Lots of sex and violence, consistently witty and eccentric humor. With stellar reviews and already 5 seasons in, Archer is truly brilliant. I can say that it definitely isn’t suited for everyone, though.

“Lucas Hood (Antony Starr), an ex-con and master thief assumes the identity of a murdered sheriff where he continues his criminal activities. His past seems to haunt him by those he betrayed years earlier. This ex-con imposes his own brand of justice where violence erupts at every turn in the not so quiet Amish town, Banshee, Pennsylvania.”

Probably as pointless as True Blood. Give it a miss.

When it comes to steamboat buffet, the things that I would deem important would be firstly its variety of soup and ingredients and then secondly, the freshness of the stuff. You know how its kinda difficult to find a place where everyone can find something to eat? Especially so when it comes to steamboat as some prefers meat while others have a better liking for seafood. Well, at M Hotel’s steamboat buffet, you would not have to worry about any friend having nothing suitable to eat as they really do have the MOST choices of ingredients I’ve ever seen. Tthe buffet over here also allows you to have two choices of soup at any one time and the soup choices includes of chicken soup, tom yam, fish and laksa. If I’m not wrong they offered pork bone soup and porridge as a base soup before too! Not too sure if its still available though.

We had the chicken broth on the left and the fish one on the right. I preferred the chicken one as its sweeter while the fish one’s more salt-based. Do take note that you’ll really have to rely on yourself to make the soup tastier so do go search for the Chinese herbs and sweetening ingredients like corn and cabbage, available at the buffet area, and add them in once the soup is served. This is extremely important as it’ll ensure you a soup tasting nothing less than AWESOME.

As mentioned above, be spoilt for choices here at M Hotel! LOOK!

Here’s the poultry section. Beside them are the normal steamboat ingredients like fish balls, taukee, yong tau fu and more.

The common seafood section which includes of squid, fish fillets, clams, mussels, octopus, shell fishes and more.

Fresh fishes, prawns, crabs, flower crabs, scallops. (I just realized I forgot to take some sections!)

Here’s the vermicelli, noodles, eggs and other carbohydrates section. I missed out the vegetables section too!

Many many sauces!

And last but not least, free flow of drunken herbal live tiger prawns cooked on the spot. WEET!

OH YA! Before I forget, though Im not a huge fan but the dessert-lovers I went with were definitely amazed by these counters!

Something thats worth gaining the weight for – Durian Dessert! My friend kept going for more! I think if not for health reasons and weight issues, 15 cups of that would not have been a problem!

And of course! Every kid’s favorite! Chocolate fountain ,marshmallows, fruits and ice-creams!

TIPS for your own ice-cream at a Buffet.

You see, its always ok to show a little bit of creativity so don’t be afraid to make use of the different items there and indulge once in awhile.

1. Get two scoops of your favorite ice-cream – best mix: Chocolate and Vanilla. Mint and Chocochips is ok too!

2. Make use of the hot fudge at the chocolate fountain. Use a spoon and pour some hot chocolate over the ice-cream. After awhile, it’ll be cooled and you’ll get some crispy chocolate coating. (In my opinion, this tastes better than the chocolate syrup!)

3. Go grab your favorite fruits and sweets and add some in.

4. Sprinkle some peanut flakes and chocochips over.

AND TADAA, when the hot chocolate freezes, you’ll get a yummilicious ice-cream dessert! THUMBS UP!

Other than having a whole lot of ingredients which are obviously free flow, since its a buffet, some of their drinks are also free flow after a top-up as well. If you’re looking for a place to you know have a great dinner and chillax a little, this is IT! Since the area is very well air-conditioned, you wont have to worry about sweating. Though so, the price is a bit steep, if I’m not wrong maybe $50+ per pax so its really much wiser to visit this place dead-hungry, oh and of course gorge yourself with the expensive seafood available.

The American Queen, had arrived at 8:00 AM. At 418 feet long and 99 feet to the top of her stacks, it’s the largest river steamboat ever built. Her passengers toured Natchez by the steamboat company bus and departed at 5:00 PM. I tried, but was not allowed to take interior photos. You can read about the American Queen by clicking this link…

Just one block up the street is the old Adams County Courthouse. I shot the courthouse photos in the watercolor mode which I like to use on stately old buildings…

Final stop of the day was at the second part of the Natchez National Historical Park…Melrose. This 1800s Greek revival-style mansion represents the height of Southern prosperity and the “Cotton Kingdom.” Built by the John T. McMurran family beginning in 1841, Melrose was, according to McMurran daughter-in-law Alice Austen, “very elegant; one of the handsomest places I have seen North or South.” If you are curious, I found this YouTube video of Melrose on the Internet…

The main house is currently undergoing restoration so I could not get inside….

On the way back to the motorhome I passed the Auburn Mansion. There are so many mansions in the Natchez area…I’ve yet decided which one(s) to tour as they all want $15. You can read about Auburn by clicking this link…
