There’s a lot of completely useless kitchen gadgets on the market and I used to be a gadget slave, thinking life could not possibly move forward without purchasing something new to help lighten my load. Experience and age have taught me to stop this nonsense! Some are good, most are rubbish. I’ve recently bought a couple that I deem really quite good that I wish to share with you.

While doing a catering job in someone’s home, my eyes were fixed on a tool in my client’s drawer. She spotted this straight away and launched into a speech singing this gadget’s praises. The gadget was a very odd looking knife sharpener and she had bought hers in the USA. “I’ll get you one from a friend of mine in the States”, she said. Thinking no more about it, months later, I received my AccuSharp. Wow – she wasn’t wrong! I have been slaving away, sharpening my very expensive knives on various steels for years. I have even done a carvery course at Leiths Cookery School, being shown how to use a steel properly AND went and bought a really quite expensive one in Lakeland. But now I can proudly announce my AccuSharp, is without a doubt, the best knife sharpener I have ever used. Some of my old knives, that were half way into their coffin have been brought back to life. Check out the website in Britain, I don’t know if they sell them here and if they do I don’t know the cost but if you’re ever in the USA, most good hardware shops stock them at around $10. You won’t regret this purchase!

Apologies for this next gadget – it’s one for a slightly more dedicated cook.

In the butchers today, I was patiently standing in line, watching Steve of Stephen’s Fine Foods in Hinchley Wood, beaver away at his burgers! He put a splodge of ground beef onto a round piece of film and put a round, heavy, steel press over the meat, stamped his palm hard down on the spring in the centre of the press and there snug underneath the press was the perfect looking 5inch round, pressed burger. All these years I have been making with my own hands, moulding and shaping, never looking quite like they should. Butchers up and down the land, I know use far more complicated machines, but I’m glad to say that old fashioned Steve (and I like that bit) uses an old-fashioned gadget that works a treat! They are quite pricy (around £47) and I have placed my order with Steve for one.

Last week, selling my wares at a fair, and being entertained by the lovely Jane from GastroNicks, a chap to my right, was selling silicon kitchen ware, amongst which was what I can only describe as a pirate’s knife. It had a good solid black handle, and a wide silicon style knife head (obviously no blade), which looked like a cross between a knife and a spatula. It was £5 at the fair with a sign next to it saying that it is sold for £9 at the shops. I tried it at the weekend when I was making breakfast, on the scrabble eggs, and it worked a treat! Better than a spatula!

I have been using thermos products for 40 years, have driven over them with my truck (by accident) and they just take it and keep on kicken. This thermos is the best I have used, I got it for my wife, she makes tea ahead of time and drinks from it all day. This thermos keep the tea hot over night and longer. I am more than pleased with it. I entend to purchase another 2 of them soon. The handle and protective base also has worked well to keep it from damage when dropped. She has been using it for a few months now and is still singing praises. Great product!

We had to return this Thermos because it was not good for the application we were using it in, which may not be everyone’s, but we weren’t happy. We used it to store our son’s whole milk on the go. It did keep the milk cold for as long as possible (with ice packs) but the problem lied in cleaning it.

It’s not dishwasher safe. I called and asked to make sure. They said to use denture tablets and I think lemon to clean it. They said it’s not recommended for milk, okay, but what IS for milk? Seems like nothing. Long story short, it’s such a tall vessel that even using a bottle brush leaves it not fully clean. Many days I’d use vinegar and let it soak endlessly with hot water, but what a pain. It still contained odors. The problem is when you remove the decorative cap (you can drink out of), the top of the vessel tapers and doesn’t allow a sponge or much of anything inside to clean it. For us it was a nightmare to clean. And I can’t imagine putting soup in here, the smell could be horrid. Maybe all it is good for is coffee/tea for which case it should say “only use for coffee & tea”.

Secondly, when pouring it does slightly leak water (from rinsing and cleaning). Somehow it traps water. I didn’t realize this until pouring milk in the car and water dripped onto my pant legs: quite a lot too!

For some applications this may be good, but for us it wasn’t. I switched to a dishwasher-”durable” Thermos Intak water bottle and so far so good. Sorry…

On the plus side it was sturdy looking, durable, held a lot of liquid, and attractive. Big handle though.

Among the best insulated I have ever owned, and I have owned a few. Coffee and creamer, and it keeps it all hot all day.

Sturdy, very sturdy. I think I could drop this thing from 10 feet and nothing would break, except for maybe the cup and I never use it anyway opting for an insulated travel mug.

The last one I had was glass lined. One early morning it slipped out of my hands. That was the end of that. A mess to clean up and no coffee that day either.

I often carry a lot of things into work and am pleased that it’s always easy to find a carrying position with the over-sized handle. Plus it is a confidence inspiring (strong) handle.

To all those that would complain about water getting into the bottom? And it is the most annoying thing about this product I know. Simple, don’t get it wet.

With the cap screwed on fairly tight, I simply rinse it out w/soapy water and the bottom never collects any water. Just a quirk like so many others that we have to learn to live with.

I expect many years of service from mine, one of the few things I can say that about in this day and age of poorly produced products. It’s been about 2 yrs already and still going strong. It may just be the last Thermos I ever buy!

Works well for a thermos. Keeps the liquids hot up to 8 hours. Warm at best at 24 hours. I’m realistic to my expectations, though. The handle is a bit daunting. I hike a lot and it would have been better if it was smaller and folded down to pack away. As noted before, the plastic top and bottoms do collect water and drips out when you pore. It bothered me more than I thought given prior reviews to this problem. Simple fix though, silicone around the top and bottom. But, wouldn’t expect to be doing this for this product! Likely upgrade to the Thermos Nissan 34 or 61 oz. More packable. Can’t go wrong with the Rock, though.

So as I understand it the owner of this Rossin snapped the seat tube of said frame ( twice! ) and then proceeded to hand it over to his friend / framebuilder for a repair. A couple of track ends and a re-jig later and he now has a super nice Rossin pursuit complete with crimped aero tubing.

This is going to look great when painted for sure.

MUMBAI: JSW Steel on Thursday announced a strategic alliance with Japan’s second-largest steelmaker JFE Steel, but markets were disappointed that the pact does not immediately involve the acquisition of an equity stake in the Indian company.

JSW, India’s third-largest steelmaker, said on Thursday that the partnership will allow it access to JFE’s technology for producing steel used in automobiles and both companies may acquire stakes in each other. Other possible tie-ups include the production of other specialty steels, procurement of raw materials in and outside India and the construction of an integrated steel plant in JSW’s West Bengal project.

JSW vice-chairman and managing director Sajjan Jindal said the financial implications of the proposed collaboration could be “immense” but not quantifiable immediately, because the exact nature of the collaborations has not been finalised. “We have constituted two task forces to arrive at final agreements. It is difficult to provide a timeframe as to when it might take place.”

Investors in India and Japan sold stocks of both firms, after it became clear that a share sale is not imminent.

On Thursday, the JSW stock slipped 0.65% to close at Rs 959.35 after reaching a 17-month high of Rs 1,039 in the morning session on BSE. Shares in JFE Holdings, promoters of JFE Steel, fell 2.9% to 2,885 yen in Tokyo. JSW has a market value of $3.9 billion and JFE $20.4 billion.

“If the money were to come into the company, then there would be an immediate benefit (in the form) of a fall in interest cost,” said Deepak Jasani, head of retail research at HDFC Securities. “Operationally, the technology transfer will take some time to show up in margin improvement,” he added. JFE Steel CEO Hajime Bada described the co-operation in the automotive segment as “the first step” of the partnership. “Through our co-operative activities, we would like to secure a local production base in India,” he said.

JSW has been going slow on its West Bengal project mainly because of funding problems. JSW plans to build a 10-million-tonne-per-year steel mill in West Bengal at an investment of Rs 11,000 crore. The alliance will supply automotive steel to the Indian units of Suzuki, Toyota, Honda and Hyundai, which are global customers of JFE, the world’s sixth-largest steelmaker.

Attempts by global steel companies to set up plants on their own in India have run into trouble. ArcelorMittal, the world’s largest steel producer, and South Korea’s Posco, announced plans more than two years ago to set up plants with capacity totaling 24 million tonne, but they are yet to get the land for the projects.

JSW joint managing director Seshagiri Rao told ET that the market for auto grade steel is growing at 7% with nearly 1.9 million tonne of steel being consumed by the sector. If other collaborations with JFE do not fructify, the Indian company will pay royalty for the procurement of automotive technology from its Japanese partner, he added.

Among the world’s low-cost steelmakers, JSW plans to raise annual capacity to 11 million tonne from 7 million tonne in two years. The $3.5-billion firm sells products in 100 countries.
