McEnroe – Borg.

Europe is like a team facing relegation. Front office under a fire of criticism, new organisational

Europe is like a team facing relegation. Front office under a fire of criticism, new organisational plan rejected and at the end of the day even the diehard fans seem to stop giving a shit.

But teams facing relegation are gems. Where Franco-Israeli-Belgo-Irish back fours happen (Portsmouth FC) or where picking your starting striker feels like a Eurovision contest (Hull City FC).

Flash back to 1995, Mathieu Kassovitz released a bomb called La Haine at the Cannes film festival and an obscure Belgian football player became the most googled name overnight – had Google existed at the time.

The Bosman ruling changed it all for professional collective sport on the Old Continent leading to an exodus of European talents to the richest teams. Like it or not, without European law there is no Galácticos in Madrid. On top of providing free geography lessons for the local fans, it just made it possible to build a team with the best players at every position.

A whole lot of people (Kapuściński anyone?) wrote books about the influence of sport. How it led to wars, how it was used as a highly political symbol. Sport is widely considered as a means of promoting intercultural understanding. But give me a favour for my intro post, how about digging a tad further? What if sport could actually be a means of promoting… a European identity? What if besides promoting diversity, it could promote unity? What if it was payback time and 10-15 years after Europe saved European sport, it was time for sport to save Europe? What if those pan-European Arsenal squads and those top European club competitions actually triggered a process where people would feel like relating to a nationality is a thing of the past and would rather see themselves as European?

I’m not on drugs – just a child of the Eramus generation meaning I studied abroad for a year and – more important – nearly slept with a girl from every EU member state. I grew up idolizing Stefan Edberg, Marco Van Basten, Jonathan Edwards and Dejan Bodiroga. Sport definitely helped me forge a European identity and I do feel like I care when I see this flag with 12 stars.

This blog to me is just an excuse to talk about Europe, European sport and – since you’ve seen the Penélope Cruz picture on the header – European culture in general. Coming next on 12 Stars: “After Scarlet – The Top 10 European girls I’d like to see Penélope Cruz kiss.” Or not.

Ohh, I was just speech less after seeing this. Federer is indeed champ and going to be my hero forever like Edberg.

Yesterday, Sachin also crafted master innings in a final against Sri Lanka to make India win the Compaq cup.

Seeing such fantastic game from legends, I do agreee with the saying that “Form is temporary but class is permanent”. The only regret is can’t afford to watch such amazing sporting actions here in Singapore.

Unfortunately Fed Ex lost the finals of US open and it indeed pained me.

So this blog will be pretty heavily tennis-based for the next two weeks, I’m thinking, because

So this blog will be pretty heavily tennis-based for the next two weeks, I’m thinking, because my favorite American sporting event (besides the NCAA Tournament) gets going with the U.S. Open in Queens. I’ll do a whole post later tonight/tomorrow morning on why I love the Open. For now, a few hundred words on a great champion:

I got to interview Jimmy Connors on a phone conference call this week for my newspaper; this is what he had to say about the upcoming U.S. Open, and a few other topics.

I was never a big Jimmy Connors fan growing up. My first love was John McEnroe, who captivated me with his attitude and his beautiful artistry on the court. Then, as I grew older I fell for Boris Becker, not because we had so much in common (He: a big tall blond German dude; Me: a small dark-haired Jewish kid), but because I loved his attitude on the court, his diving for everything, and the power with which he played.

Then I got enamored with Jim Courier, and Stefan Edberg, and, well, Jimbo never really did it for me. I remember being excited one day while I was volunteering at the Hamlet tennis tournament in Commack one year (we had a small pro event for several years in my little town), when word spread among us that McEnroe and Connors were about to warm up together on the main court.

We rushed over, and for 15 minutes one summer day, I was 10 feet from two of the greatest players in history. That was a pretty awesome moment.

But really, Connors to me was always too standoffish to root for. He was just as poor a sport as McEnroe, but didn’t seem to have the flair or charisma I was looking for. He was a great champion, but didn’t seem as beloved by the public as the others.

Then, of course, came the 1991 U.S. Open, and if you’re any kind of a sports fan you remember what happened. In the December of his career, Connors put together a miraculous run, winning five matches to get to the semifinals, and along the way played one of the greatest points in the history of the sport (seriously, check this point out, it was phenomenal).

All of a sudden, Connors was beloved, maybe truly for the first time, by American tennis fans. He’s had a quiet retirement, mostly, but came back into the spotlight when he coached Andy Roddick last year, with mixed results.

It doesn’t speak all that well of Jimmy that Roddick has done much better under new coach Larry Stefanki, but to his credit, Connors doesn’t speak ill of Roddick or Stefanki.

Anyway, talking to Connors this week got me thinking about his legacy, and how, maybe, I didn’t appreciate him as much I should’ve.

And because any time I can link to a story by one of the greatest sportswriters who ever lived, I will, here’s the best Jimmy Connors story ever written, a profile by the legendary Frank Deford from Sports Illustrated, from 1978.

Enjoy.

P.S. Speaking of Sports Illustrated, this cracked me up: I just renewed my subscription a few weeks ago; I’ve been a subscriber since 1984, when my Grandpa Don got me it for Hanukkah when I was 9. It’s still my dream (though it’s fading with each passing year) to work for them one day.

Anyway, so I get a postcard from them in the mail yesterday:

Dear Michael Lewis:

We appreciate your prompt payment for you (that was their typo) Sports Illustrated Magazine subscription. However, our records indicate that you overpaid and are due a balance of $0.01.

We will extend your subscription for 1 additional issues, or if you would prefer a refund check for the balance, please contact our customer service dept.

Seriously? They’re going to send me a check for a penny if I want them to. Isn’t that just a colossal waste? I’m half thinking of calling and saying “I want my refund!” just to see what a check for a penny looks like.

Stats are misleading. In fact, that’s the reason why, in my Sports Geek bio, I make it abundantly clear that I am a Sports Geek, not just a stats geek. There is a monumental difference. Comparing the careers of tennis legends Pete Sampras and Roger Federer are a prime example of why stats aren’t all they’re cracked up to be. As the great Yogi Berra said, “There are lies, damn lies, and statistics.”

Sure, Roger Federer just won his 15th Grand Slam tennis title. This is an amazing, monumental achievement (which has berthed some really great future topic ideas, folks). Federer is dominant, routinely making finals as Loyal Homer points out. But, the competition faced by Pete Sampras during the peak of men’s tennis in the 1990s is nothing like the competition faced by Roger Federer now. Federer has one decent opponent, Rafael Nadal.

Nadal is a good player in his own right, and has outplayed Federer in head-to-head matches winning nine of fifteen and five of the last six. That is impressive from Nadal. But, when comparing eras, the opponents Pete Sampras faced on a tournament-to-tournament basis were much tougher than the occasional Federer-Nadal match. Nadal provides Federer’s only true rival, and beats him more than he loses. Sampras faced legends and won.

Legends like Andre Agassi (winner of eight Grand Slam titles). Agassi was ranked #1 in the world for 101 days before Sampras reclaimed the title. As great of a player as Agassi was, Sampras beat him 20 out of 34 times. Jim Courier was another Sampras contemporary and a clay court legend winning two French Opens. Courier held the #1 ranking, as well, for 58 weeks. But, of the 20 times they played, Sampras won 16. Another rival of Sampras’ was Stefan Edberg. He held the #1 rank for 72 straight weeks and won six Grand Slams. Sampras beat him eight of fourteen match ups. Boris Becker (six Grand Slams, Sampras wins 12 of 19 match ups) and Ivan Lendl (eight grand slams, Sampras wins five of eight match ups) are two other greats Sampras beat.

Despite all of that extremely good competition, Sampras still manages to hold the record for most consecutive weeks ranked #1 at 286 weeks.

For argument’s sake, let’s review some statistics. It’s important to make sure this comparison is apples-to-apples… well, as much as possible. Federer has already played in 40 Grand Slams, while Sampras, for a variety of reasons (injuries, mostly), played in only 38 Grand Slams for his entire career. Through 38 Grand Slams Federer had 12 wins to Sampras’ 11 – not that much of a difference, certainly not enough to anoint Federer the King of Tennis.

We must also consider how Sampras and Federer have distinctly different styles, and those differences play into their respective records. Federer’s style highlights his versatility and instinct while Sampras’ style emphasized his power and instinct. This is important because it explains the types of tournaments each player entered. Sampras was not as successful on clay because it neutralizes power. Grass and carpet surfaces favor Sampras’ explosive, powerful serves and forehand. Therefore he entered in – and won – many tournaments on each with seven grass court tournament wins and a whopping 15 tournament wins on carpet. Federer has only two, and has not dominated any one surface like Sampras did.

But, the most important point is that Sampras played some of the best players of ANY era in tennis, and still managed to dominate the competition.

Federer is a great player, but he’ll never match the intensity of the rivalries Sampras faced on a tournament-to-tournament basis. Sampras was always playing against great players in a sport that was peaking, in its prime. Federer’s competitive field is not nearly as rich. It’s true Federer may end up with more Grand Slam titles, but he will not end up with the designation of the Undisputed Greatest Tennis Player of All Time.

I really love to watch the game of tennis and has been avid fan of tennis till I left the shores of India. Though my liking of tennis was only limited to grand slam events and I was used to follow the grand slam events religiously. I was used to make sure that I can watch most of the semi finals and finals of the grand slam events(even US open finals which starts early morning Indian time). But now I can’t do it any more Reason of course is money. Here subscribing sports channel is bit costly and just for one or two events spending big $s is not worthy. (One more sacrifice in a quest to survive ). Okey okey this post is not meant to vent out my frustration but to applaud the real champion of the game Roger Federer

Roger Federer aka FedEX created history yesterday by winning Wimbledon and taking his total grand slam titles tally to 15 in just 6 years time. Now he is holding a record of winning a highest no. of grand slams by man and again regained Numero Uno ranking which he truly deserves. Federer is one of my fav player and I’m in awe of his overall personality and his skills on the court. He is such a gentle player but at the same time very emotional also. Most of the time he remains cool n composed on court and never looks frustrated or in anger when game is going away from him or he commits any unforced errors. He reminds me of my yester year favorite Stefan Edberg. Stefan was also a class player. Same way I also had a liking for “Playboy” Andre Agassi. (Matches between Edberg and Agassi was a big problem for me coz I was not able to decide whom to cheer for and always end up having a mixed feeling after a match irrespective of whoever wins it). Roger is big personality but has no controversies surrounding him. Happily married and soon to be a father of a child. He can be an idol for any one who wants to take up a game.

Now a days a game of tennis has changed a lot. Power packed game with big serves, aces, strong returns, speed, etc. is what matters now. Frankly speaking I don’t enjoy it. I still prefer skill and class over power. I have grown up seeing tennis played by Edberg, backer, Agassi, Steffi, Sabatini, etc. and all these legends were simply relying on their class rather than power. Now a days, even a women players are also hitting powerful aces and move across the court like leopards. For that matter credit(or blame) should go to Williams sister. I don’t enjoy the game played by them at all. Finals between these two black (black word is not meant here as racial slur) muscular giants is big turn off for me. Williams sister rivalry can never be like Steffi v/s sales or Steffi v/s hingis. As of now, I don’t follow women’s tennis as I was used previously. I also believe that women’s tennis should have some glam quotient also but current women players completely misses it. I had some hopes from Sharapova but she couldn’t match my expectation.

I’m not against speed but it should not be at the cost of class. Let the power remain the forte of boys only and let the glam to return to the court.

Congratulations and good wishes to champion Roger

After the deadly duels witnessed by the tennis courts across the orb between Jimmy Connors and John

After the deadly duels witnessed by the tennis courts across the orb between Jimmy Connors and John McEnroe, Boris Becker and Stefan Edberg, Pete Sampras and Jim Courier, Sampras and Andre Agassi, modern era tennis has been kept alive and kicking by the never-ending rivalry between Spaniard Rafael Nadal and Swiss Master Roger Federer.
Federer and Nadal have played monumental tennis in the last half a decade and given us the viewer — a joy of watching two of the most complete players in the history of tennis. This statement gains a lot of weightage considering the amount of adulation and expectations that is been bestowed from the two, something which the old warhorses missed during their heydays.
While players such as Arthur Ashe, Rod Laver, Bjorn Borg, Boris Becker have enlightened the courts of Wimbledon with their brisk strokeplay, Federer and Nadal have taken the game to an altogether new zenith. The mother of all battles took place on the Wimbledon Centre Court in the epic final between the two in 2008 which Nadal clinched 6–4, 6–4, 6–7(5), 6–7(8), 9–7. It was the Spaniard’s sixth title of the year and his first Wimbledon crown. It was a match that signalled a change in the World Tennis order and Federer soon was pushed to the No.2 spot in the rankings, something which the Swiss ace mulls even today.

The match went on for four hours and 48 minutes and was delayed twice due to rain. The spectacle was stretched to over seven hours ending just before nightfall. That loss marked the first time Federer had been beaten in a Grand Slam final match other than the French Open.
Wimbledon 2009 was expected to revive the rivalry between the deadly duo but with the Man from Spain withdrawing from the event citing injuries, Federer is disappointed. “It’s obviously very disappointing for me. Of course, I’d love to play him. He’s my main rival,” said Federer 2 days before starting his campaign to regain the Golden Crown at the All England Club.
When Federer, who has gone on to march to the last 20 Grand Slam semifinals, steps onto Wimbledon Centre Court for his first round tie against Taiwan’s Yen-Hsun Lu on June 22, it will be his first tennis game since crushing Robin Soderling in the Roland Garros final.

But with Nadal out of the equation, Federer will more than happy to ‘kiss’ the Crown and take it back home again!
