I am not a big drinker of beer but when I buy I usually chose the Spanish Beer ” SAN MIGUEL”. Yesterday when at Systembolaget (which is the place we buy alcohol in Sweden) buying some wine I also bought a couple of bottles of beer. A new brand this time, take a look at the pic and some of you can see very clearly under whose influence I chosen that brand.

Need to get a bit of the Belgian atmosphere ’cause in March; Belgium here I come!

Stella Artois in New York are splashing life in to wall painting as part of its latest art/advertising campaign. The ritual project is a series of 21 images painted over 21 days on a giant brick wall, with the finished effect at the end planned as a stop motion video of the perfect pour (all be it on a huge scale). So far we are 14 days and counting in to the action, with each day bringing a the task of covering up the previous image, repainting the wall, then stepping back to admire all the teams hard work.

The really neat touch to this campaign comes from the follow-up work around the edges, with telescope viewpoints placed strategically around the area to help passers-by get a close in view on the live experience. This is combined with the dedicated website giving bite sized history on the lost art of wall painting and other areas. If you take a look through the online pages you can see day by day updates of how far they have got in video format, or if you have a bit more time check out the journal section which goes lots of great background on the progress. Rather than just reading here about it though head on over to The Ritual Project and have a look for yourself!

Stella Artois a cumparat Bud.

Realism deci cat cuprinde.

..chillin’, watching a game, having a Bud.. True.

Enjoy it!

This commercial has been on for a while now and I can’t help but cringe every time.

Anyone can see that there is an obvious comparison between the glass of beer and the woman. The girl then disappears and the slogan reads: “She is a thing of beauty”. Thing, she is a thing. Great.

I know that the feminist standards of beer commercials are not the highest, they’re abysmally low but I’m over it. I used to find Stella Artois commercials refreshingly different but now this whole 60s themed female getting dolled up just to be ‘consumed’ makes me wanna puke.

Of course the lyrics add to the puke-fest: “il sait que c’est plus fort que toi, et comme il te veut un jour il t’aura” BAARF!

He knows its stronger than you and because he wants you he will have you.

It’s always fascinating to go back to the 50s and 60s and look at how awfully sexist the advertisements were but we can’t take comfort and think that we’ve come a long way because in the world of advertising, we really haven’t. Women are objects, we’re never active agents unless we’re disciplining ourselves in some way – always aware of how we present ourselves and garnish our package. I want to see us as active agents, participating in the world not just posing alongside the active agents holding the glass of beer, listening to what he’s saying, laughing as if he were soooo funny.

Screw this. If you’re trying to sell me something by selling me a feeling or an idea, sell me the feeling that I’m better than a pretty thing, sell me the idea that I can accomplish things in the world besides obsessing over my appearance all to just stand there next to the guy with all the dialogue. If Stella Artois can make me buy their product, they can also make me think more of my gender while doing it, il n’y a pas d’excuses.

Every time we’re at an average restaurant and I order a beer, I give my wife the first sip. And ever

Every time we’re at an average restaurant and I order a beer, I give my wife the first sip. And every time she takes that sip, she wrinkles up her nose and says, “you’ve spoiled me!” You see, we only drink really great beer at home and I’ve turned her into a bit of a beer snob. On top of that, we both prefer big-character beers, like Victory Storm King Stout (our house beer), Stone Arrogant Bastard, just about anything from Southern Tier, etc. You can see where a draft of Bud might fall a little short.

But for me it goes beyond Bud. Unless a place happens to have a special seasonal on tap (like a Sam Adam’s Oktoberfest) I can’t find anything to be excited about. To me, Stella is the Bud of Belgium and Sam’s Boston Lager, my typical go-to beer (actually more like my settle-for beer) doesn’t thrill me either. And Blue Moon makes me angry for some reason, probably because I view it as a macrobrew posing as a micro import. And I won’t usually even consider a mass-produced domestic, except when I’m visiting my folks in Milwaukee and I’m at the State Fair, then a Miller High Life tastes pretty good, especially with a roasted ear of corn dipped in butter.

So the question is this – where do you draw the line? How low will you go when you’re out and the selection is less than ideal? Will you drink a Bud or will you opt for a glass of water? Is bad beer better than no beer? Do the beer offerings determine where you dine?

Sometimes I sit at home alone in my room (well, often times I sit home alone and at 22 it’s coincidentally in my dorm room. I know, I know, I probably should graduate at some point) and feel especially unmotivated. In the depths of my laziness I’ve found it easiest to turn to a pint of Stella Artois for entertainment. However, my bank account is cold and naked and my liver is pretty close to as not working as you can get. These circumstances have forced me to make the responsible decision of doing something productive with my life and let me tell you, the result was not nearly as frightening as I had expected. In the past couple of weeks I’ve been embarrassingly lazy in my blog posts but do not believe my lack of posts reflects my lack of London experience because I’ve been a busy little bee. I would recount you with my hourly adventures for the past month but you don’t want to hear and it I don’t particularly care to write it so instead I’ll go with a couple of the most recent notable events.

I’ll begin with The Times BFI 53rd London Film Festival which I attended last night. I saw the Argentinian film “Plan B” at the Vue in Leicester Square and to say that the movie completely soared past my expectations would be a sore understatement. Actually, to be fair, I really had no expectations since I sort of blindly signed up for the movie and went in oblivious to the plot and/or subject of the film. This is how I tend to do things because I’m really too lazy consider any other way. Anyway, this touching film was about a man named Bruno, a desperate ex-boyfriend who would do anything to get back together with his ex-girlfiend Laura. Despite them not being a proper couple, Bruno and Laura are still sleeping together and during one pillow talk session she tells Bruno about Pablo’s past experience with a man. Pablo confessed to Laura that he has been with a man and that by doing so didn’t me he was gay but instead reaffirmed his masculinity. Upon hearing this, Bruno, who is skeptical of Pablo’s past homosexual experience, thinks of a Plan B which involves him befriending Pablo with the intentions of exposing his homosexuality and leading him away from Bruno’s ex-girlfriend. I won’t spoil the ending but I’ll have you know but as the finishing credits rolled I was left in tears (those of you who know me are probably saying, “Oh, Chelsea cries at everything” and to that I tell you to bug off). When the film was over there was a question and answer session with the director, producers and cinematographer who provided insight into the motives and creative process behind the movie. From the beginning walk in on the red carpet (yeah, that’s right, I walked in on the red carpet but I’m surprised I wasn’t ransacked by security seeing as how the combination of my grungy green jacket and nappy hair gave off the “I’m a homeless person” look) to the end, the entire experience was one to remember. I’m now prowling around looking for more movies to see before the festival is over.

The next most notable event was my trip to Belgium over the weekend. At 5:30 a.m. on Saturday our journey began as we took a bus to Dover to catch the ferry to France. I saw these beautiful white cliffs at the Dover port and about halfway to France I realized, “Ohhhhh, those were the white cliffs of Dover.” In case you haven’t figured it out yet, I’m quite the idiot. After an hour and a half long ferry ride on uncooperative waters I landed in Calais, France feeling sufficiently nauseous and generally hateful toward the world. We then hopped on a bus for a hour-long bus ride to Oostend after which I was beyond ready to have a generous helping of Belgian beer. We had a quick dinner at “The Cromwell” (I had a cod in a mustard sauce with mashed potatoes that tasted delicious apart from the fact that our waiter a total moron) and then headed off to the beer festival. My parents took me to Oktoberfest as a young child (they fed me beer through a bottle) and I’ll sounded jaded when I say that the festival did not really live up to the high expectations set by the Oktoberfest. There were not that many people there and I kind of felt like I was at a bad bull roast. While it wasn’t what I expected, I certainly took advantage of the beer and in my book that makes everything worth it.

On Sunday we headed off to Brugge, Belgium. The city was absolutely beautiful and the waffles and friends were to die for, however, I found that many of the owners of stores did not seem too keen with us Americans. The proof was in the customer service experience which generally began with “What do you want?” and ended with them hurling whatever it was I ordered at my face. How anyone could be so unhappy in a land full of such fabulous food and beer is beyond me. Nevertheless, on Sunday I happily returned to London and opened up a Stella to reward myself for going out and conquering the beer and food of Belgium. I smiled and thought, maybe if people in Brugge drank more Stella than they would be happy just like me.

(First posted at the Social Enterprise Ambassadors website September 2009) From Wife Beater to Hedg

(First posted at the Social Enterprise Ambassadors website September 2009)

From Wife Beater to Hedge Cheater..

What would you think if FIAT, onetime owner of Misar, the popular landmine suppliers to the worlds best loved military regimes, were to offer to protect an endangered Ocelot with every Fiat Punto bought.

Or if the local crack dealer ran a Buy One Get One Free promotion raising money for a new PlayStation at the local youth club…

Crass,
Offensive,
Misplaced,

All three?

So when Stella Artois’s fine looking new advertising broke a few weeks ago, rubbing itself down in a lather of it’s own frothy smugness, offering to plant a hedge on my behalf whilst reassuring me that their bottles were made from 75% recycled glass… I literally spilled my socially responsible pint.

After reordering a less smug lager, I learned we’d gone from reassuringly expensive to reassuringly environmental, and that our children are safe now that ‘Wife Beater’ has paid Ben Fogle to plant a hedge with the same dimensions of a case of Stella.

And that’s the campaign! A hedge the shape of a case of beer…

!

Andreas Hilger, marketing director for InBev UK, claims the promotion delivers a “serious investment towards helping replenish Britain’s depleted hedgerows”.

…whilst stocks last.

At Livity, our socially responsible marketing agency and social enterprise, one of our founding principles is to convince brands of the benefits of working in a socially responsible way. We actively work with brands to harness the incredible power of marketing to positively influence society, so I know am in danger of the pint calling the bottle green, here…

but..

Isn’t it inBev’s responsibility to manufacture in an environmentally sustainable way, Isn’t it a little bit 1997, New Labour and sundried tomatoes to be claiming green credentials whilst spending millions of pounds showing off about something you should have been doing for years?

I mean, you’re Stella Artois, you’re part of inBev, the worlds largest brewer, you shift more than $30bn a year…. if you’re going to apply yourself to making a difference.. is that really all you’ve got.. 75% recycled bottles, 50% recycled cans and a big hedge?

So whilst I congratulate you on even trying, and I do sincerely mean that, I am a firm believer in brands and business playing a lead role in awareness and educating consumers on what can be done to make a difference, I urge you to invest a bit more imagination and socially responsible grooming before showing off your bush.

So far, so critical…

Livity has managed to deliver campaigns and concepts for brands that range from PlayStation, Nike, Red Bull, Nike, Penguin, MTV and O2, and aligned them with organisations and issues that range from teen pregnancy, literacy, enterprise, tackling NEET’s and many more. This was the plan Michelle Clothier and I dreamed up eight years ago, to harness brand marketing power to stimulate social change.

It’s not easy, it’s always going to be open to accusations of green washing, there’s going to be mistakes, but for my money, it’s one of the most interesting opportunities for Social Enterprise, using our experience as socially driven businesses to help major brands, with major influence to add their weight to influencing positive social change, whilst maintaining business objectives.

To try to add some (well needed) balance, it’s not just Stella, there’s some other great claims made on billboards this Summer. My favourite was Vodafone, who offered us this little ray of sunshine as a contribution to our holidays:

“We’ve abolished roaming charges this Summer”

… erm…. except hasn’t the EU been applying pressure to mobile phone companies through the courts to stop fleecing us with extraordinarily high roaming charges for years. Isn’t there now legislation applying charging caps to data, SMS and roaming charges and haven’t you all been fighting against this in league with the UK government and actually this is more to do with a result of existing and further legislation than your own shouty benevolence and generosity?

Sorry, but aren’t you the second largest mobile telecommunications network company in the world (after china mobile) worth £75 billion (at least you were 12 months ago!) in 31 countries with 303 million customers across 5 continents… if you really wanted to do something for the people, that gave a responsible edge to your advertising, couldn’t you do a little bit better than giving us something you’ve been told off for not doing.

Maybe you could plant us a hedge?

Maybe these two should get together and launch Stellafone, where you can enjoy a bitter and damaging drunken row with a loved one for the same cost at home as abroad, that gives you a great big hedge the shape of a phone to help you make up for it in the morning.

Noul proprietar are licenta sa produca in continuare brandurile internationale (Stella Artois, Beck’s, Lowenbrau, Leffe), pe langa cele romanesti (Bergenbier si Noroc). Sa speram ca noul proprietar este dispus sa faca investitii, mai ales ca in Romania firma a pierdut in ultimul an in jur de 5% din cota de piata, ajungand la mai putin de 20%.

As this mid-term week winds to an end, I am looking forward to OU’s Homecoming weekend. While it’s true I’m looking forward to catching up with friends and sleep I’ve neglected in favor of studying, there is one thing I can’t stop fantasizing about: a good brew.

I know, college students and beer go hand in iPhone-clad hand. When I say I want a good brew, I’m not referring to a Bud or Nati Light. No, I need something hearty and delicious.

My fascination with solid brews started when I turned the ripe age of 21. I promise. This finally gave me ample chances to test what I truly enjoy in a beer. Throughout winter 2009, I spent a descent chunk of money sampling home brews at Jackie O’s, which led me to the discovery that light, slightly sweet and wheaty is for me.

When not indulging in somewhat pricey homemade brews, I started to order other beers in other establishments. I vetoed many, settled on few, but was overall happy with the occasional Guinness, Newcastle or Leinenkugel.

In June 2009, when I became vegan, the flitty freedom of vegetarian days came to a halt. Shocked to find that not all beers are vegan, I immediately questioned by favorite carbonated beverage. Why some companies use milk, eggs, isinglass or gelatin to process beer was (and is) beyond me (and the addition of honey is unfortunate, but at least it’s a bit more understandable). All I knew is that my flabbergasted self needed a solution.

Thankfully, the vegan community is super friendly and helpful and I was pointed in the direction of Barnivore.com in no time.

This incredibly easy-to-navigate is the key to a successful vegan night out, or vegan homecoming, in my case. All you have to do is type in what brew or booze you have in mind, and up pops an email response from the company of the product in question.

Before rushing out for happy hours, I’ve learned that the milkshake of beers, Guinness, may not be vegan, but most of my easy-to-find favorites such as Blue Moon, Leinenkugel and Stella Artois. Now that I’ve properly researched my beverage of choice, I’m completely ready to get my school spirit on and be the best beerleader OU’s ever seen:

Drink responsibly! (And that's definitely a Leinenkugel in my hand!)

What’s your favorite brew? Do you care whether it’s vegan?

This morning over breakfast (running to the much more sociable hour of half 10, meaning a 10:25 rise

This morning over breakfast (running to the much more sociable hour of half 10, meaning a 10:25 rise for me) I had a most Interesting chat with a Melbourne lad with Greek parents. There was a joint discussion on SEO, I explained the Blogsherpa program to him and he TEFL to me. TEFL is something I’d heard of before and I may well try and complete a quick online course in it when back in Blighty in December. It could prove useful post Australasia adventure, i.e. Asia.

I saw a Twiiter post (tweet to the initiated) yesterday from the fellas over at Hey! Manchester raving about the KEXP Music That Matters podcast. They are usually on the money so I’ve given it a whirl and have not been disappointed. If like me, you like lo-fi indie and Americana, fill your boots.

I’m having a bit of trouble working out my route at the moment. But I’ve just sat down for an hour and had a go, here’s the latest draft:

Sofia-Skopje-Pristina-Podgorica-Kotor-Tirana-Ohrid

Or in country form:

Bulgaria-Macedonia-Kosovo-Montenegro-Albania-Macedonia (again)

After that I’ll be heading south, ultimately to Athens and then a ferry crossing from Patra to Italy. Route yet to be formalised!

It’s a very overcast day here in Sofia but I’m not going to let that daunt me and shall shortly be going on a heavy duty walk around the city. I’m armed with the excellent Hostel Mostel map that has pretty much everything you could want on it detailed. Jobs a good ‘n.

The sun has come out now and I’ve just sorted my bus ticket to Skopje, 32 Lev with my ISIC. It’s 16:00 and I’ve not ate since breakfast so time to grub up now.

While looking for somewhere to eat I nipped into a supermarket to get some apple juice (which is pretty much as close as I get to fruit nourishment on my adventures). There were 3 kids who were definetely no older than 14 all stocking up on beer, the checkout lady didn’t bat an eyelid. Bulgaria eh.

I’m sat in Cactus and have ordered the Teriyaki duck fillet with coriander rice noodles. I nearly opted for the pork chop and potatoes with barbeque sauce but decided to leave my comfort zone just a little. A pint of Zagorka is the accompaniment. The food was a posh portion (i.e. not that large) but absolutely lovely. The main was about half as much again as it said on the menu, I’m not sure why. I didnt say anything as for what I ate and a beer it came to the equivalent of less than 8 quid anyway, which isn’t bad at all for what I got.

Plus it’s a free beer and pasta in the hostel tonight. Geordie joy juice.

Bugger, I have just realised I’ve got teriyaki sauce on my City shirt. Classy eh. Those noodles do tend to lead to a bit of splash back though. Bugger. To disguise my shame I’ve whacked my North Face jacket on but it’s far too hot to be sporting such clothing, 15 minutes to the hostel and with a quick change all will be right with the world again.

I’m a little bit worried about catching the The Villains vs The Citizens game this eve. Hopefully I’ll just buy some cans in and watch it at the hostel but it’s quite a busy place so someone could scupper my plans by whacking a DVD on at half 8 or something, it’s a 10 o’clock KO local time so in theory I’d have to guard the telly from about 8 which would be a right pain.

My plan is to guard from about half 9 and then if someone is already watching Saw VIII I’ll have to leg it to one of the Irish pubs on my map. This in itself is risky as the game won’t finish to getting towards midnight and I think they’ll want to chuck out before then. If it does come to that maybe they’ll take pity on me and let me see it out, especially if Martin Petrov is having a blinder.

Okay, I’ve just made an executive decision; I’m not going to go to Rila Monastery tomorrow. I’m sure it’s very nice and everything but it will save me €20 and give me the chance to do the full on tour of Sofia I intended to do today as it’s a bit late in the day for it now. Also it will give me the chance to have 3 consecutive decent night’s kip in a row for a long long time as I won’t need to get up early. Although I’d really like to see the monastery (and shall do one day), that’s a rather hefty plus column in my book.

To celebrate this decision I’ve just bought six 500ml bottles of different brand beer while listening to British Sea Power. The running order shall be Stella Artois, Zagorka, Becks, Kamenitza, Staropramen and Apuaha.

Most Britons' idea of "a quiet night in" The UK has once again come top in the ‘Stella

Most Britons' idea of "a quiet night in"

The UK has once again come top in the ‘Stella League’ according to the European Union, beating all other countries for the tenth year running. The ‘Stella’ is the EU’s measurement for determining a nation’s happiness and prosperity, based on the price of a can of Stella in a corner shop.

The EU study shows that while a can of Stella currently costs around £1 in a British corner shop, if bought as part of a six-pack, in Germany, the second happiest/most prosperous nation, it costs around the equivalent of £1.20. Denmark and the Netherlands also scored well, while the relatively primitive, wine loving nations of France, Italy and Spain continued to fare badly, pricing their Stella at £1.85, £1.90 and £2 respectively. Meanwhile, in ultra-expensive Finland, a can of Stella could set you back by up to £2.50.

EU Commission spokesman Carlos Impegnia said that although the ‘Stella’ is a good indication of a nation’s wealth and prosperity, it should not be looked at in isolation. “There are many factors that determine how happy a country’s population actually is,” he said. “For example, how many takeaway food outlets are situated in a one mile radius of the average citizen, and how many of those will deliver after midnight. Then there is the question of satellite TV. While most EU nations offer multi-channel TV showing a whole range of absolute crap, not many of those can offer live pause and the ability to record three post-pub hit-and-miss sketch shows at the same time.”

French Finance Minister, Christine Lagarde, stated that a good showing in the ‘Stella League’ was no reason for celebration. “Stella Artois was invented by the French, and it is supposed to be drunk from a delicate half-pint glass in a pavement bar in a sexy little quarter of Paris. It is not supposed to be drunk from a can in front of the TV with a curry. I don’t think we even have it in cans. We probably only do that for you people.”

Chancellor Alistair Darling, however, declared that he was delighted with the news. “Maintaining our lead in the ‘Stella League’ was one of Labour’s principal campaigning ideals and remains one of our greatest achievements. During the previous administration a can of Stella rose to a highly dangerous £1.50, a level we’ve been able to severely curtail. There is no greater pleasure for a British citizen than taking a lovely, heavy, six pack of Stella out of a corner-shop fridge and paying a pittance for it.”

I’ve never been sold on lines with a double meaning when one of the meanings is actually negat

I’ve never been sold on lines with a double meaning when one of the meanings is actually negative. (It’s not really ‘The Ratner Approach’, of course, as there was no double meaning in “We make crap”, but it made a catchy headline. Oh, shut up.) I worked on a Stella Artois campaign at BD-NTWK a couple of years ago, and the ATL was lots of gorgeous artwork in a 1920s European poster geometric stylee.

Lowe’s illustrations were fabulous, but the UK line just didn’t feel right. It was: Pass on something good. And, yes, you’d have to be a very pedantic, petty sort of consumer to bother thinking, “Actually, I WILL pass on a Stella, ha ha, and have a Kronenberg instead,” but to be honest with you it was the first meaning I took from the line when I read it. I had to ponder for a second to get the second, intended meaning, which is a real pity.

Maybe it’s just me, but I think the ground is too dodgy to go there. And most people are pedantic and petty when they can possibly get away with it, after all. Which brings me neatly to the latest Dixons ads.

I’ve seen them on the tube (inside the carriages) and on the platforms (on the media projectors – space age!) although they don’t particularly need to be moving images. There’s a fair amount of copy and very little of anything else, which immediately got my attention – naturally! – and the copy itself is really quite good; witty, colourful and accomplished, although I’d say it was one teeny-tiny draft short of being perfect.

Hmm. Sunshine yellow background, thick black type…you cheeky devils, M&C Saatchi! And here’s the other two:

The more I read the copy, the more I like it, which is why I’ve posted all three ads. The sly use of rivals’ colour schemes is a nice touch, too.

I’ve read elsewhere that bloggers are seeing it as bravely honest – get the good service elsewhere, because you won’t get it with us – but squashed on a tube, feeling hot and bothered, I just took it to mean Dixons is cheaper. Is the client really sanctioning a ‘crap service, good prices’ ‘message, or is that just a side effect they didn’t quite agree to?

Anyway, back to the main point – the strapline. Dixons is, as you can see, ‘The last place you want to go’. And I know – I know – that we’re all supposed to love this because it’s daring and clever and counter-intuitive, but I read it and the negative meaning sat squarely on top of the intended meaning. It’s not a simultaneous thing; one meaning is bigger, more immediate than the other.

Still, great ads. And good on Harrods for complaining and stirring up a bit of PR. Ha!
