Dalle semifinali del Masters 1000 in corso di svolgimento a Parigi , e ultimo stagionale prima delle finali londinesi,esce il responso Djokovic-Monfils.Il serbo ha dominato nettamente Rafa Nadal, rimasto in partita solo fino al 2-2 del primo parziale.Dopo show di Nole che scappa via senza patemi con sette giochi consecutivi.Punteggio finale 6-2 6-3

Decisamente più equilibrata la seconda semifinale dove il francese Gael Monfils ha la meglio di misura sul ceko Stepanek n° 14 dell’ATP dopo più di 2 ore di intensa battaglia altalenante per 6-4 5-7 6-4.Il francese che nel primo parziale parte male,riesce a riprendersi e vincerlo 6-4.Nel secondo i due giocatori che mantengono con facilità il loro turno di servizio. Al terzo gioco Gael conquista una prima palla break che non riesce a trasformare, successivamente su 6-5 Stepanek il ceko ha un set-point su servizio Monfils che trasformerà.Si va al terzo , dove sul 4-4 , il francese grazie anche all’aiuto del pubblico di casa strappa il servizio e va a servire sul 5-4 per l’incontro che vince nonostante una prova probabilmente non impeccabile tecnicamente.

El agobiante partido de ayer frente al chileno Fernando González generó que el físico de Juan Martín Del Potro se vea afectado hoy en el encuentro ante Radek Stepanek por los cuartos de final del Master 1000 de París. El argentino abandonó a la media hora, ya que estaba 0-4 y debido a una molestia en la espalda evidenciaba no tener demasiadas energías para levantar el match.

De esta manera el checo se convirtió en uno de los semifinalistas del certámen y ahora se medirá frente al local Gael Monfils, que derrotó al croata Marin Cilic 3-6, 6-4 y 6-4.  En la otra semifinal se verán las caras Novak Djokovic y Rafael Nadal en lo que promete ser un duelo más que apasionante.

El tandilense deberá recuperarse para afrontar en buenas condiciones la próxima y última competencia del 2009, es decir, el Torneo de Maestros que se disputará en Londres a partir del 22 de noviembre.

Everyone except for the humorless Roger Federer enjoyed Joker’s player impersonations, that’s why I thought it was a shame when he stopped doing them. Stopped until Monday night, that is. After his surprisingly easy win over Radek Stepanek, a mischievous Nolle tried to lure coach and NY fan favorite Todd Martin onto court to hit a few balls. When Todd demurred, Nolle challenged John McEnroe.

OF COURSE John didn’t need to be asked twice. He ripped off his tie and headset and headed for the court. Meanwhile, Nolle revealed his McEnroe impersonation, complete with short-shorts, limping walk, shirt-sleeve pulling and the McEnroe serve. The crowd roared. Once McEnroe made it to the court, the fans went bonkers, especially after Johnny Mac lined up to serve with precisely the same gestures demonstrated by Nolle. The two had a good time fooling around for a few minutes and the crowd was delighted. What a wonderful way to cap the best four days of grand slam tennis I have watched in a long time.

One would think the Four Letter would have the video up immediately, but alas, even two hours later it is nowhere to be found. When it becomes available, I’ll post it. Novak is best when he is relaxed. An easy win and adoring crowd can only help his confidence.

Here it is, courtesy of Australian tv. The Four Letter put about 90 seconds of the video on its website but ESPN does not allow embedded videos. The match included neither Tim Tebow and Brett Favre, so the network can’t devote any resources to it.

I’ve dumped on women’s tennis enough for poor play, bad sportsmanship and on court sound effects that I thought it was high time I singled out some male pros for deviant/annoying behaviors, especially since today featured a match between two of the most hateds and a lovely piece of sexism courtesy of the AELTC. With one exception, these guys are still playing, otherwise we’d need a much longer list. 

Honorable Mention – Justin Gimelstob. You know why.

6. Robin Soderling - appears here because his fellow pros hate him, not me. There are worse people (see below). Especially despised by Prince Rafa. 

5. Lleyton Hewitt - the most hated player of the early part of this decade has mellowed a little at 29. Maybe we’re just inured to him since he hasn’t been sticking around tournaments for very long. But some of the old immaturity (suing the ATP) has faded away, just like his career before this week.

4. Radek Stapanek – I don’t know what his peers think,  but I happen to think he’s a cad of epic proportions. He lost in five sets today when Hewitt made a comeback from two sets to love down. His transgressions include dumping Martina Hingis (either in the wake of the cocaine scandal or because he caused it) and ruining the career of Nicole Vaisidova before she even turned 20. He’s also too ugly to have gotten either of them. 

3. Novak Djokovic - he’s on the list because the fans hate him, not me. In fact, I love him, although he’s reached a crucial moment in his career… it’s time to grow up Novak. Of course since King Roger and his fans wail and gnash their teeth because Novak did impressions of TMF and beat Rog at the Australian Open (“but he had MONO!”) he’ll be on the list for a good long time.

2. Fernando Gonzalez - Gonzo is well known for jerkdom. During the 08 Olympic semi versus James Blake, he refused to call a point against himself despite video evidence he lost it. At the 09 French, we were  treated to the unholy spectacle of him wiping out the mark with his ass.Nastase, Connors, McEnroe and Rios would be proud… even they didn’t think of that move.

1. Dinara Safina’s Brother - Upon losing his last Wimbledon match,  Marat Safin described it as “a relief.” Will you just go already? Retire and spare us from yet more bullshit as you continue to feel sorry for yourself for having more talent than 99 percent of people who have walked the face of the earth. You had as much talent as Roger Federer, the Man himself, and you blew it. Your continuing sibling non-support also earns high demerits.

Dalle mutande di Mirny ai wc, dalle frasi simbolo agli errori.
Una settimana tutta da ridere. Raccolta sugli Internazionali Bnl d’Italia, tutto quello che c’è e non si conosce

Il Foro Italico quest’anno è bello. Bello il villaggio e l’area espositiva. Tutto in color verde e legno scuro. Molti gli stand e bisogna stare attenti al portafoglio, perché la tentazione di comprarsi tutto, dalla racchetta di Federer al completo di Nadal, passando per la macchina per il caffè (ma nell’acquisto, scontato, non è incluso George Clooney, peccato!) e un capello di paglia perché il sole picchia. Sì, la tentazione è forte, ma per non asfissiare il portafoglio bisogna saper resistere. Il logo BNL impera ovunque. Nel complesso un effetto di grande eleganza. Ma c’e un difetto: poche indicazioni. E così succede che la domanda più ricorrente è: “Scusi, sa dove sono i bagni?”. E la risposta “Molto ben nascosti, Signora”. Solo al sabato sono apparsi gli adesivi che indicavano dove si trovavano. Ma per i primi 5 giorni e’ stata una “caccia al tesoro”.

Il giorno inugurale è stato caldissimo, quasi tutti i giocatori erano vestiti di bianco. Ma con questi materiali così leggeri, il bianco diventa quasi trasparente. E allora bisogna stare attenti alla scelta degli indumenti intimi. Chi di attenzione ne ha avuta proprio poca è stato Max Mirny, mutande bianche con righe blu e rosse. Non il massimo dell’eleganza ma si e’ visto di peggio. Comunque qualcuno deve averglielo fatto notare perché poi l’errore non lo ha più fatto.
Il peruviano Luis Horna, parte dalle qualificazioni e poi batte Gasquet e Acasuso per perdere da Stepanek. Curiosità, chiede sempre la seconda palla al raccattapalle, come fanno quasi tutte le giocatrici. Tursunov, al Foro Italico, più che per il suo tennis si è messo in mostra per il suo fisico. Si allenava sempre a torso nudo (e malgrado questo è sempre bianco latte) e quando poteva faceva il piacione con le ragazze che assistevano all’allenamento. Esempio: campo 1, il russo stecca una pallina che cade fra le sediole della seconda fila, per uno atletico come lui non sarebbe un problema scavalcare e andare a prendersela, invece chiede a tre ragazze sedute in settima fila e che si stavano mangiando un panino di aiutarlo. Il primo tentativo va buca, il secondo pure, con la terza va meglio…ma non di molto, la ragazza scende a prendere la pallina ma l’espressione non è di quelle affascinata dai bicipiti del russo anzi direi piuttosto scocciata, forse preferiva il panino.

In genere i raccattapalle dei primi giorni e dei campi laterali, sono bambini. A volte anche molto piccoli e non solo di età. Uno dei loro compiti, oltre a dare palline e asciugamani ai giocatori è anche quello di fare ombra ai tennisti con un ombrellone tipo quelli da spiaggia. Già sono pesanti, se poi chi deve aprirlo è un bambino di massimo nove anni… l’impresa diventa ardua. Lapentti allora con animo buono chiama il bimbo e lo aiuta ad aprire l’ombrellone, anche perché stava arrostendo sotto il sole. Ma fare come a Roland Garros, dove invece che l’ombrellone da mare che pesa e fa tanto gita da ferragosto sulle spiagge di Rimini, si usasse un ombrello con scatto automatico, no? I raccattapalle ne sarebbero felicissimi, i giocatori avrebbero subito la loro ‘ombra’ e poi l’ombrello con il logo del torneo potrebbe essere venduto come fanno al Roland Garros.

Ovunque ci siano Federer o Nadal, c’è anche un bel numero di fan chiassosi che chiamano ‘ROGER’, ‘RAFA’ nella speranza di un autografo. E allora succede che sui campi dove è previsto il loro allenamento ci siano persone ‘accatastate’ una sull’altra, mentre sugli altri campi quasi nessuno. Viene quasi da pensare che attirino di più le gambe di Federer che quelle della Sharapova o della Ivanovic. L’unico, comunque, che rimane totalmente indifferente ai grandi campioni… ma anche ai tennisti di bassa classifica, è il gattone che passeggia (ma il più delle vote dorme), nell’area riservata ai giocatori accanto ai campi di allenamento. Federer gli fa un grattino sulla testa e lui alza appena lo sguardo prima di tornare a dormire. Su di lui il fascino del possibile “Piu’ Grande Giocatore di Tutti i Tempi” non fa alcun effetto. A proposito di animali, ci sono due piccioni che adorano il rischio e si divertono a fare acrobazie in genere fra il campo 5 e il 6. Soprattutto quando si giocano i doppi. Partono in picchiata e poi veloce virata. A volte vengono sfiorati dalle palline ma per questa settimana nessun giocatore lì ha colpiti. Bravi i piccioni o scarsi i giocatori?

Spesso si è visto anche Wilander, perché adesso segue il francese Mathieu. Il ruolo del coach prevede anche di seguire il doppio giocato dal tuo assistito, anche se il doppio si gioca molto tardi, pioviccica e fa freddo. E lo svedese, da bravo coach, rimane seduto fino all’ultimo punto. Curioso che in pochi lo riconoscano e quasi nessuno gli chieda un autografo. Altra persona che non è stata riconosciuta il primo giorno è stato il supervisor del torneo. Gli uomini in nero della sicurezza, non lo volevano far entrare sul campo 1. Anzi, non lo hanno fatto entrare (perché gli avevano detto che il badge con quella lettera, lì non poteva accedere). Peccato che dopo anni di lavoro al Foro Italico non abbiano ben chiaro la differenza fra la scritta ‘Staff’ e ‘ATP Supervisor’ che c’è su certi badge. Nel frattempo pioveva e Ljubicic e il belga Darcis, giocavano sotto la pioggia chiedendosi se il Supervisor stesse per dare l’ok per sospendere il match. Nell’attesa, spettatori sotto gli ombrelli, giocatori, arbitro giudici di linea e raccattapalle completamente bagnati.

Tutti parlano dei tic di Nadal in campo. Ma di Kiefer ne vogliamo parlare? Ad ogni cambio campo camminava sulla riga del corridoio, ma solo dalla linea del servizio in su, per poi fare l’ultimo passo a toccare l’incrocio delle righe con il piede sinistro. E su i punti di parità, prima di mettersi in posizione di attesa al servizio, con la racchetta toccava l’incrocio delle righe una volta. Malgrado tutti questi suoi rituali scaramantici ha perso lo stesso da Ferrero.

Nei primi giorni del torneo, chi aveva il biglietto per il giornaliero ha potuto anche gustarsi match…serali. Per esempio Tsonga-Simon, ultimo match del campo 1 è terminato verso le 23.15. Nel momento cruciale del match, 62 46 65 e servizio Tsonga, ci sono stati i fuochi di artificio… sia in campo che da qualche parte, al centro di Roma. Per ben 15 minuti botti e luci colorate. Il botto più grande rimarrà comunque lo smash, sul match-point, affondato a rete da Tsonga. Quello non sarebbero stati capaci di inventarlo nemmeno i cinesi campioni del mondo in fuochi di artificio. Sul centrale, oramai, c’e’ la consuetudine di mettere la musica all’entrata dei giocatori ed alla fine dei set. Ma se per l’entrata in campo degli uomini la canzone scelta è stata : ‘Isn’t she lovely’ per le donne che canzone metteranno? Spero non … ‘Who the real Men are?”!
Vi siete mai chiesti chi può rimanere a vedere un match di doppio, per esempio Bhupathi Knowles-Lopez Verdasco, la sera alle 23.30? Il match è iniziato con 144 spettatori, 28 adetti alla controlleria in gruppi di 3 che chiacchieravano, 2 vigili del fuoco, i 3 coach di Bupathie Knowles, mentre erano 6 per Verdasco e Lopez, 3 bandiere della Spagna, 4 addetti al campo, 7 giudici di linea, 6 raccattapalle, 1 arbitro, 1 supervisor, 1 refree, 1 dj per la musica. Tranne gli spettatori che alla fine del match sono passati da 144 a 27, tutti gli altri sono stati costretti a rimanere. Terminato il primo set, ben oltre la mezzanotte, il DJ mette la musica: ‘That’s the way I like it!’ Senta signor Dj… ma lei è proprio sicuro che sia la canzone adatta a quest’ora e con questa umidità?! Se qualcuno di voi ha mai voluto provare a fare il tour manager (a proposito Giorgio Di Palermo questa settimana era sempre elegantissimo. Sopratutto con il completo grigio e la camicia rosa) oppure addetto all’organizzazione del torneo, questo è un problema che vi si potrebbe chiedere di risolvere: Bhupathi Knowles che a mezzanotte passata chiedono di avere banane e arance. Avete meno di 5 minuti per trovare le arance. Che fate? Ringraziate che ci sia la festa per i Vip e di corsa vi recate dal tizio che fa i cocktail per farvi dare 4 arance. Poi sperate che si piazzino sullo stomaco ai due giocatori. Ma non sanno che le arance di sera sono pesanti da digerire? E poi dicono che mangiano da atleti.

Dopo il doppio ritiro nelle semifinali, nessuno aveva il coraggio di dire nulla al direttore del torneo Sergio Palmieri. Lo si vedeva camminare da solo, sconsolato. Ogni tanto allargava le braccia e scuoteva la testa. Non lo confesseranno mai, ma molti invece, sono stati contenti del ritiro di Stepanek (a causa dei problemi di stomaco). Era forte la preoccupazione, in caso di vittoria del ceco, di dover mettere la sua foto nel tunnel che porta al centrale, dove sono esposte tutte le foto dei vincitori e delle vincitrici del torneo di Roma. Se andate al Foro Italico, fate la visita guidata, gratuita, all’interno dell’impianto. Potrete vedere il “dietro le quinte del torneo” e camminando anche voi nel tunnel guardando le foto capirete il perché dello scampato pericolo.

Ha empezado el ATP Montecarlo y con el, nos metemos de lleno en el mundo de la tierra batida… terreno donde esperamos que Rafa Nadal siga siendo el rey. Antes de que eso ocurra, un par de partidos para dentro de un ratillo:

Cilic – Cipolla

6-3/6-2 para Cilic en un partido donde no ha tenido rival. Cipolla jugó mal, a la defensiva y preocupado solo en pasar bolas y así no se puede ganar el partido.

Cilic quiere demostrar mucho este año y empieza su año en tierra batida. No es un jugador puro en esta superficie pero va con muchas ganas de hacer un buen papel.

Para mí es muy superior a Cipolla y, aunq el partido estará igualado en los primeros compases, creo que Cipolla debe sacar sus galones en la pista y ganar el partido.

Cipolla viene de ganar en la previa a un Nieminem perdido, que no encuentra su juego, pero no creo que pueda ser un dato a tener muy en cuenta para el partido de hoy… hoy sera totalmente diferente.

Lapentti – Stepanek

6-3/1-6/6-3. Ganó Lapentti en un primer set un poco loco, con muchos breaks, un segundo donde Stepanek barrió, y un tercero igualado hasta que Lapentti puso la 5 marcha.

Stepanek esta mucho mejor que Lapentti actualmente. El juego del checo es muy solvente y ya ha tenido buenas actuaciones sobre esta tierra durante la temporada pasada (se coló en semis de Roma ganando a Federer, David Ferrer y Nieminem por el camino por ejemplo).

El H2H es de 3-0 para Stepanek y sinceramente, no creo que hoy el ecuatoriano plante cara a Radek

David Nalbandian y Juan Martín del Potro accedieron a los cuartos de final del torneo Indian Wells. Les ganaron por doble 7-6 al indio Paes y el checo Dlouhy, que son quinto y décimo del ránking de dobles respectivamente.

En la próxima instancia Del Potro y Nalbandian se las verán con el ganador del partido entre los estadounidenses Mardy Fish-Andy Roddick y la dupla integrada por el francés Michael Llodra y el checo Radek Stepanek.

While we were wringing our hands over Dubai last week, actual tennis was being played.

In Dubai, the tournament that never should have happened, Venus beat Serena in a 7-6 third-set tiebreaker and then defeated Virginia Razzano in the final. This is the first time Venus has been back in the top 5 in 5 years – of course the only reason she’s been absent from the top is because she loses interest at non-grand slam tournaments. Interesting that Dubai would be her comeback venue of choice. She did warn us repeatedly that the care and watering of the sponsors was more important than the treatment of Shahar Peer, and she put her racquet where the money was, pocketing $300,000 plus whatever appearance fees she got just to show up. Her comments after the match, which reference Althea Gibson, were nonsensical. I’ll get to them later.

In Marseille, Jo Willie Tsonga showed he is indeed injury free, taking his second tournament of the year. Tsonga boasts a tour-best 19-3 record. We did not have a chance to properly evaluate him after his run to the 08 Aussie Open final because of constant injury. Clearly he still has the goods and he still looks like Ali and plays like Pete Sampras (click to read a point by point analysis of Tsonga destroying Nadal in 2008, looking like the second coming of Pistol Pete). He beat Novak in the semifinals (look for a note from me later this week on where Novak is headed) and Michael Llodra in the final. The only thing that gives me pause iwth Tsonga is his fitness. He looked a bit out of shape down under and while that may get him through the three-setters, he’ll need more juice for the slams.

Right behind Tsonga in the win department is Andy Roddick, now 17-3. He beat Radek Stapanek to take home the  Memphis trophy. Stepanek beat Roddick last weak on his way to the San Jose title. He’s proving to be a late bloomer, but we at the blog hate him for being a total cad. I still don’t see what Vaisadova and Hingis saw in this twerp. And Nicole ought to be a top 10 player right now, but her stock plunged faster than the Florida real estate market.

Fourth-seeded Radek Stepanek was a first-round winner Monday at the SAP Open tennis tournament in San Jose, Calif.

Stepanek beat Dominik Meffert 5-7, 6-3, 6-1.

In other opening-round action, Christophe Rochus upset seventh-seeded Igor Kunitsyn 6-2, 7-6 (9-7); Tommy Haas eliminated Lars Poerschke 6-1, 7-6 (10-8); Taylor Dent beat Bobby Reynolds 6-3, 6-4; and Florent Serra dropped Jarkko Nieminen 7-5, 6-7 (1-7), 6-4.

Defending champion Andy Roddick did not see action Monday.

The winner of the tournament will collect $93,900.

El croata Marin Cilic conquistó el segundo trofeo de ATP de su carrera al adjudicarse el torneo de Chennai, India (450.000 dólares en premios), con una victoria sobre el local Somdev Devvarman por 6-4 y 7-6 (7-3). En Brisbane, Australia (484.750 dólares), el título fue para el checo Radek Stepanek, que se impuso al español Fernando Verdasco por 3-6, 6-3 y 6-4 y obtuvo su tercer certamen en el tour profesional.

Federer bt Stepanek

An awesome Federer beat an under par Stepanek in straight sets yesterday in round 3 of the US Open, it was Federer’s most convincing victory of the year where you saw him give his best performance since his ‘mono’ illness last year.

This was very new to watch as in previous matches he was always struggling a little bit, always lacked that little bit of energy – which is strange as he still won nearly all his games, he just didn’t have that extra bit. Yesterday though, he seemed the unstoppable player we all have come to love, just watching some of those backhands down the line, volleying, and precise serving – we got to see the pure instinctive Federer.

I felt quite sorry for Stepanek, I said he was under par but really had no chance, the game started full speed, Federer won the first game with 2 aces without dropping a point. He pushed Stepanek’s serves in the first set and managed to get his break in the 4^th. After that is was bread and butter for Federer. The same happened in the second set. Please do remember Stephanek beat Federer in a recent masters series, and he is ranked 28^th in the world and was once amongst the top 10, so definitely not a player to just make up numbers.

The final set was a shock as Federer dropped his serve, he was serving into the wind and things got very gusty during his game and caused him to make a few errors. To show how Federer dictated the game, he was 0-2 down that set and won it 6-2. I have always said this, but when Federer plays at his best he always looks as though he can pick and choose which games he wants to win.

A fine victory for the world number 2, if he can take this form into every game I feel he can win this tournament and make it look easy! Unless Rafa has an answer to this performance, but I feel Nadal and only Nadal could have a chance to stop Federer in his finest form.

Now that Ole Miss has demonstrated its utter dominance of the college football world — they’re undefeated you know — my attention has turned back to tennis. I watched Roger Federer destroy Stepanek today. Had there been a mercy rule, they would have invoked it.  Federer hit some shots that no mere mortal can make. He’s my pick on the men’s side.  He’s playing like a man on a mission. I think having not won a major this year has re-sharpened his focus.

On the women’s side, I have no clue. If this were just another tour event, I’d pick one of the Russians or one of the girls from an eastern European country with names that would cramp my fingers if I tried to spell them, but because this is a major, I’m leaning toward one of the Williams sisters. If I had to guess, I’d go with Serena. I don’t think Venus can win back-to-back majors this year.

So, who’s it going to be for the men’s and women’s championships?
