As soon as Neptune entered Pieces fully on the 4th of February 2012 I felt my interest in astrology

As soon as Neptune entered Pieces fully on the 4th of February 2012 I felt my interest in astrology go from 0 to 60 in 3 seconds! I didn’t expect this. But I just went with it. I dug up all my Dane Rudhyar books and could not seem to put them down. I found myself savoring every word as this great mind penetrated into the symbology of the houses and planets. I started, in earnest, to penetrate into the depths of my own natal chart to see why the heck my life was so bizarre and seemingly unmanageable. I decided to go with the flow and not fight back as I have in the past. It was like I had climbed up over the vast hard rocky cliff of my mind and reached the summit of my intuitive side. I decided to give in to my love of astrology and acknowledge the passions I had for this esoteric science. This may sound strange, but I feel like I “get it” now. Sort of like Neptune was reaching out to me as it never has before and saying, “It’s OK!”. I feel like Neptune is dissolving some of the mental veils that has kept me imprisoned for decades on the intellectual side of understanding this fascinating intuitive science.

I have been interested in astrology ever since the early 80′s when I gave my chart to a couple of friends that were experts at western astrology. One was a pro the other an “adept” student. They both gasped when they saw my chart. No doubt they had bad bedside manners, but as they each tried to cover up their reaction and tell me some things about my chart I became aware that I would need to learn more about astrology to understand just what would cause such a reaction. This became especially clear after one of them looked at me with a certain steely caution and asked me, “Exactly what are your ambitions in life?”

As luck would have it – when I moved out to California in 1984, my roommate was ferociously studying astrology, aiming to become a professional, so he pointed me in the right direction towards a stack of Dane Rudhyar books. At the time I didn’t really get much of the details but I loved Rudhyar’s poetic style and over the years my astrological library grew to include many of the great writers on the topic including; C.E.O. Carter, Alan Leo, Isabel M. Hickey, Liz Greene, Stephen Arroyo, Howard Sasportas and many others. In retrospect I’m really happy that I skipped past the astrological cookbook phase and jumped right in to the esoteric spectrum along with the emerging Jungian and spiritual astrological thinkers.

For the last 25 years I would binge on astrology in short spurts lasting a couple of weeks to a couple of months at a time. (Mostly at times when things in my life seemed to be coming unraveled or when I would be traveling abroad etc.) But as my life progressed I still felt some deep mysteries about myself that seemed out of reach to my conscious understanding. The astrological reason behind this is fairly obvious – four planets (sun, moon, mars and Neptune) all conjunct within one degree in Scorpio in the 8th house. A classic stellium. But an extremely tight one – in the little understood 8th house and in the little understood sign of Scorpio! And all of this lovely stellium-ness quite dissolved by Neptune. Giving that I am Pieces rising, I am probably about as Neptunian as they get. But more on my chart later.

I wish to send out a special heart-felt thought to all of you out there, reading this or not, as we move into an extremely interesting astrological period in the next few decades. I pray we all can become emerged in the oneness that Neptune gives and that love wins the hour!

So welcome to Astroloblog! Please leave any insights, comments or additions to help us all further our understandings of the un-understandable!

“Just as water flows downhill, the tendency in all of nature is to take the easiest path. That direction, however, is not the path of personal growth.” (1)

“…Saturn’s heat and pressure are needed in order that we can develop what Buddhists call the ‘diamond soul’.” (2)

I like both of these quotes very much. The first conveys a basic realization about life that needs to dawn by the first Saturn return, so that in terms of personal growth, we can gain real benefit from the unfolding of Saturn’s second cycle. The second quote contains a marvellous image of what the rewards can be during the second Saturn cycle as we grapple with the stern demands of the Saturn archetype.

Saturn

http://www.freewebs.com/saturnmen/planet-saturn.gif

During Saturn’s first cycle, the major task is to find a place to stand in our lives and perceive a few reliable landmarks from which to take bearings, so that we can face life more than retreat from it. Then from 29-30 onward, we can begin to extend and deepen the various possibilities that our lives contain–a process culminating in the second Saturn return at the age of 58-59. After this point of stock-taking, the third and final cycle begins.

However, before being able to define clearly what the psychological changes and challenges of the three cycles are, it is necessary to define the essence of what the Saturn archetype brings into our personal lives.

I find it beautifully symbolic that the cycle of the progressed Moon runs closely with the Saturn cycle. The progressed Moon talks about our inextricable connection with the rhythms of life — its cycles and its limits. It describes the necessity of separating out and moving on from one period of experience to another if we are to develop texture and complexity. But it also explains our drive to be safe and secure and to keep ourselves on familiar territory. The progressed Sun challenges the latter need, pushing us to differentiate, to take risks, to “follow our bliss”.

The Saturn archetype, however, contains BOTH dimensions of this inner sol-lunar dynamic described by the progressed Sun and Moon, and it can be seen as their external worldly agent. Saturn as life’s challenging, defining, and shaping principle clearly says to each newly born individual “Anything you can achieve in your life is confined by the inevitability of your mortality, and by the given described in your birth chart. In terms of complete Saturn cycles, you have three to work with at the most. Now get on with it — see how far you can go!”

At the start of life, all is potential. As the Saturn cycles unfold, they describe how that potential gradually crystallizes, concretizes, until by the end there is nothing left to develop in this lifetime. The challenges presented by Saturn have at their core the demand that we become who we are, and who we can be, as fully as possible, by separating from that which we are not and could never be.

There are important differences in the developmental demands of the stages symbolized by the three major cycles of Saturn. The first, from birth to ages 29-30, is the thesis stage. It is the most intensely physical, energetic, and least conscious cycle. It is about building the platform on which to stand in life. The second cycle, from 29-30 to 58-59 is the antithesis stage.

The initial structure is tested, challenged to grow; awareness and consciousness are more fully developed; life’s goals are pursued and hopefully achieved to a sufficient degree in order to bring at least a tolerable level of satisfaction. In the synthesis stage, culminating at ages 87-88, ideally there is a bringing together and summing up of what one’s life has meant, and a shifting of emphasis from worldly achievement to reflection and spiritual maturing. There is an acceptance of, and preparation for, the inevitable physical decline that ends in the death of the physical body.

I find the Saturn archetype profoundly paradoxical. On the one hand, Saturn represents that which nails us to the cross of matter, holding us in the world of form. On the other hand, when Saturn’s challenges have been patiently and honestly worked with, and a mature realism arrived at, the sense of freedom of spirit that can then be released is immense – full of the potential for satisfaction and joy. This sense of freedom is unconfined because it does not relate to matter at all. I am sure this is what the Buddhists mean when they talk about the “diamond soul”.

Many rune casters refer to the Gateway as a negative rune. As it is affiliated with the god Thor, they connect it to chaos and destruction. But as I see it chaos and destruction must be moved through – and understood – in order to achieve serenity and calm so we can step through the Gateway enlightened. As Blum writes, we must look at ALL that has come before, look at it all laid out before us and observe it and bless it before we release it. In doing so we can step through the Gateway free of past conditioning, of old habits, of connections with friends and family that may hinder growth.

—–

From January through July 4 of 2012 Mars is moving through the sign of Virgo. Mars moves forward until January 23rd, then retrogrades(moves backward) until April 14th, at which time it returns to forward motion until it moves on into Libra in early July.

—–

Virgo likes NOTHING more than making order out of chaos. As an Aries with Aries Ascending…the movement of Mars is of particular importance to me. As one with Moon in Virgo(in the 6th house) and Jupiter in Virgo as well…Mars moving through Virgo really resonates. Making order out of chaos comes quite naturally.

—–

Carlos Castaneda wrote that in order for the warrior to be completely unencumbered and free he must release his own personal history. In the total encampment that sits in the valley below the hilltop where the Gateway is are also family history – connections to mother, father, grandparents. In order to step through the Gateway in clarity those relationships must be evaluated, reevaluated, assessed, blessed, brought into the light of day and released. Incorporate the essense, and what qualities are valued from those ancestors, but step through the Gateway with self knowledge and independence.

—–

Also in the valley below the Gateway are ties to the material world – to owning, to possesions…to fear – fear of life or fear of dying or fear of failure. In the valley are self importance and clinging to a need to feel important. Release.

—–

Returning to the subject of transiting Uranus conjuncting natal Sun: In his book Astrology Karma, and Transformation, Stephen Arroyo writes of Uranus transits: “Uranus cuts away the old and revolutionizes one’s way of being in the area indicated. It brings sweeping changes that have the effect of reorganizing(often disorganizing at first) one’s consciousness in order to permit new growth to come forth.” The changes may be vast and outward or experienced completely on an inner level.

—–

All these considerations – mental attitudes, repostionings, planetary and personal development…are things that are going on at some level as we stand there under the Gateway, readying ourselves to step through into a new awareness.

Here are some interesting questions I was asked not long ago. If you would like to ask me any more, to keep the middle aged braincell from teetering into the abyss (all help gratefully received!) , please leave them in a comment and I will reply – provided they are genuine of course!

Astrologer at Work - Mediaeval Style!

What transit always shows up for you in surprising ways?

They all do, especially the long-lasting ones. The deep challenges that force our growth lurk in the realms of the unconscious, just waiting to hitch a ride on the nearest really tough transit. For example, I didn’t think that ten years of Neptune transits was going to involve an enforced descent into the Underworld for most of that period! However, the good news is that I have now emerged, much improved (unless you ask my husband….!) with enough notes to keep me writing for a further ten years.

What is your funniest transit or retrograde experience?

There are several, not all of which can be aired publicly! The one which comes immediately to mind is the occasion, in March 1985, when Saturn turned retrograde on my 28 Scorpio IC. In the middle of lunch with an old friend who at that time was a bank manager, without warning, I passed out. Just then, a friend of his, who was also a bank manager, was passing by the restaurant window. I came round and insisted on going home – very groggily, with a bank manager holding me up by each arm. Very Saturn in Scorpio, don’t you think?!

Would you rather be ruled by Uranus or Jupiter? Why?

What a question! Both those planets are strong in my horoscope, Uranus in the tenth house leading an eastern bowl shape, with Jupiter in the third closing the bowl, and the two in bi-quintile aspect. My Ascendant is also on the Jupiter/Uranus midpoint. However, if forced to choose I would go for Jupiter, provided the aspects weren’t too difficult. My reasons are probably dictated by the stage I’ve got to in life: that disruptive, eccentric, unpredictable, stubborn individualism characteristic of a Uranus-ruled life feels too tiring to contemplate now!

Jupiter’s boundless energy and optimism, ability to inspire others and be inspired by the more positive dimensions of life, and willingness to be open to a sense of meaningful connectedness to that which is greater than oneself, are especially attractive to me at this point.

What advice would you give to someone learning how to read their own chart?

One, there are dozens of ways of evading personal responsibility – resolve at the outset never to do so by blaming your horoscope or your transits for your difficulties in life.

Two, realise that objectivity is something to be aspired to, which can never be achieved by mere human beings. This being the case, try to recognise that you can be most objective and therefore most helpful by reading the horoscopes of strangers, provided you have appropriate training and supervision. When approaching your own horoscope, or those of your loved ones, you will inevitably colour the planetary picture before you with your own hopes and fears.

Three, the illuminating light which is gradually cast as your understanding of the symbols in your chart grows, will be wonderfully helpful in shedding light on your gifts, pains, motivations and aspirations. But bear in mind that possessing astrological knowledge has a shadow side – for example, I have never known anyone including myself who didn’t look at upcoming transits, especially of Saturn and Pluto, without a certain amount of fear. To help my astrology students with this, I used to point out that 99.9% of the human race from the beginning of time has managed to stagger through life without the aid of astrology! So – enjoy the fascination of deciphering the astrological map of your life. But don’t get too precious about it – and be aware that this wonderful knowledge has a double edge….

What astrology books do you re-read or use the most?

The two astrologers who have most inspired and educated me have been Liz Greene and the late Charles Harvey, with both of whom I was fortunate to study – unofficially from the mid-1980s and formally between 1995 and 1998.
I want to begin by stating that I have personally experienced what I believe are physical manifestat

I want to begin by stating that I have personally experienced what I believe are physical manifestations due to Uranus transits. I had never had problems sleeping in my entire life – ever – and yet when Uranus began its long transit through Pisces making station after station first to a sensitive midpoint area for me in late Aquarius, then to my natal Pisces Mars, then natal Uranus, and then natal Moon I began not being able to sleep at night.

*****

For the first year this manifestation was a bit of a novelty actually, and I kind of enjoyed it. Up all night doing things on the computer, writing, reading. When this situation continued, though, on into the second, third, and fourth year it became something increasingly difficult for me to deal with. The fact that this transit also was taking place in my 12th house…it felt like everything was taking place under water, where I was swimming heavily and not able to either make much progress or to see well the path ahead – or even things around me.

*****

Through this time I continued my normal physical pattern of pushing myself to the limit and I came to the point where I actually broke down completely. After five years of understanding and addressing my body’s needs through this period I recently, finally, came up out of the water into the light. However…

*****

Uranus has moved out of Pisces into Aries. If you read my commentary here “Uranus from Pisces to Aries” you can get a feel for the different energies. There are obvious differences. The energy generated by a Uranus transit through Aries is going to be much more direct with much more clarity and more force. Yet, the same electric impulses generated by the Uranus transit will still be taking place.

*****

At this time…Uranus is aspecting my natal Sun in Aries and I am back to the land of insomnia. While I do feel like I am out of the water and on to land in the light…I am still experiencing a difficult and testing time.

*****

I write this as an example to show my own personal experience on the Astrological level with transiting Uranus in the hope that it will offer some insight to others. I also want to post here brief excerpts from Stephen Arroyo’s book Relationships and Life Cycles: Modern Dimensions of Astrology(three paragraphs follow)

*****

You know Uranus is the “awakening” planet and when you have a real strong Uranian thing happening to it’s very hard to sleep. It speeds you up so much; it speeds up your nervous system so much that it’s really hard to get enough sleep. Your nervous system is being overwhelmed with Uranus energy so intensely that you really need sleep to recuperate, and yet it’s just vibrating you so much that you can’t get it.

Uranus speeds up the rhythm of life. It speeds up the usual pace of your development and growth. It hastens change. And by “speeding up”, I don’t mean like 2 or 3% but about 500%! It really goes fast. Oftentimes, things will happen so hot and heavy when Uranus is aspecting personal planets or the Ascendant or sometimes also when it’s hitting Saturn or natal Uranus, things will be going so fast and developing so quickly and you’ll go through so many changes that you’ll feel like you’re just spinning. You’ll often have insomnia too, under Uranus transits, because Uranus energy is too much for the nervous system. Your body cannot handle Uranus in concentrated doses for very long.

…physically, a Uranus transit is a very hard energy for your body to handle. It really tests your nervous system, and it will often be a time when there will be nervous ailments, twitches, skin rashes, insomnia, and all kinds of weird things that can hardly ever be treated effectively. But when the transit passes, the symptoms often pass or at least decrease in severity.

*****

This information should be particularly pertinent to those especially with early Aries Sun or Ascendant, also those with early Libra/Cancer/Capricorn Sun or Ascendant, or with Uranus in early Cancer.

*****

That’s all for now. I’m going to try to get some sleep.

Breaking Down the Borders Fortune and Spirit: The Principal Lots in Hellenistic Astrology Sunday, No

Breaking Down the Borders

Fortune and Spirit: The Principal Lots in Hellenistic Astrology

Sunday, November 21, 2010 – 9:30 p.m. EST

Linda Furiate - You began studying astrology at the age of 12 after reading a magazine article. What was that article and how does a 12 year old go about studying astrology? Was this accepted by your family?

Doug Noblehorse – The article in question was a Reader’s Digest article about Jeane Dixon, the famous American psychic and astrologer. This was in the summer of 1967, a few years after the assassination of President Kennedy – an event which she predicted. The idea that you could see into the future fascinated my 12-year-old mind, so I set about finding any and all books about astrology that I could. Growing up in a geographically isolated city made my task difficult, but fortunately astrology was undergoing an explosive growth phase during the late Sixties and early Seventies, so astrology paperbacks were somewhat popular. I don’t really know what my parents and family thought about my astrological interests; there was never much said, either pro or con. Coming from a fundamentalist Christian household living in a pronounced science-oriented community it’s amazing I never encountered much opposition.

LF – How has Dane Rudhyar and Stephen Arroyo influenced your practice of astrology?

DN – After I exhausted the drugstore paperbacks on astrology (i.e. Jess Stearns, Zolar, Sydney Omarr, etc.) I turned to the local library, which is where I first encountered Dane Rudhyar, The Astrology of Personality I believe. I searched out books by Stephen Arroyo, Michael Meyer and others from the humanistic/transpersonal school soon after. These author-astrologers taught me to see astrology – and individual horoscopes – as a process-oriented discipline. Planets are not isolated, non-interactive points in the chart, but rather each planet is intimately involved with and connected to each of the other planets, if not through actual aspect, then certainly through phase relationship. This holistic approach I believe is one of the keys to truly understanding the horoscope.

LF – Briefly describe Hellenistic Astrology and what it means to you.

DN – After many years of seeing astrology through modern eyes only, I began to chafe from the lack of application to everyday, practical matters. So I poked around Medieval and Jyotish applications of astrology, but nothing resonated with me the way Rudhyar’s and Arroyo’s work had done. That was at least until I met Robert Schmidt, who introduced me to Hellenistic astrology. As the original horoscopic astrology (that we currently know about) it serves as a fountainhead for astrology with much practical application – a worthy balance or bookend to modern astrological views. Much to my surprise, Hellenistic is not a dusty, deterministic, dried-out astrology; its metaphysical applications rival (and sometimes are the source of) modern ideas on esoteric astrology. My objective is to contribute to the integration of Hellenistic astrological methods with compatible modern concepts.

LF – Your lecture for the BDTB conference is Sunday, November 21st at 9:30 p.m. EDT called “Fortune and Spirit: The Principal Lots in Hellenistic Astrology”. Without giving too much away give us a hint as to why these Lots are so important to use in delineation.

DN – Why are the Lots of Fortune and Spirit so important? Simple. They are the Lots of the Moon and the Sun respectively – and even modern astrologers would agree with the ancient dictum “The Lights are the givers of One’s all.” Not only do the Sun and Moon provide personal information about a nativity, but their relationship to each other is key to understanding the deeper aspects of a nativity, loosely symbolized in the modern era as the concepts of anima and animus. Yet, when it comes to the Lots of Fortune and Spirit (as well as the other Hermetic Lots) this is only one aspect of the subject – I’ll explore a few others during my presentation.

LF – Do you have any closing remarks about why you wanted to be part of this groundbreaking online conference event?

DN – I firmly believe that this event heralds a new kind of conference which will become the model in the years to come, affording practical and holistic astrological education to a greater audience of astrologers and students. In turn, this should engender a greater flow and exchange of ideas, methods and experience within the astrological community. To be a part of this premier conference is an honor and a privilege. Thank you.

As part of the process of promoting “Jupiter meets Uranus”, I have been doing some interviews. This one was particular fun to do, since Wendy of that excellent site The Know It All Astrologer sent me a list of questions which I was not expecting at all! The unexpected, of course, is useful for jolting one’s remaining brain cell into something approaching dynamic action….

*****************************************

Interview between The Know It All Astrologer and Scottish astrologer Anne Whitaker

Anne W

As reference books for my interest in mundane astrology, my three favourites are: The outer planets and their Cycles by Liz Greene, Anima Mundi – the astrology of the individual and the collective by Charles Harvey, and Mundane Astrology by Michael Baigent, Nicholas Campion and Charles Harvey. My copy of Stephen Arroyo’s Astrology, Karma and Transformation , that wonderful in-depth companion on the ‘stormy journey of the soul’ is now so well-thumbed that it is starting to fall to bits – and when I feel like some outrageous, light-hearted, funny, but deadly accurate astrological analysis I turn to Debbi Kempton-Smith’s Secrets from a stargazer’s notebook.
