XM Channel 32 is The Message, a station focusing on contemporary Christian music. I don’t know much

XM Channel 32 is The Message, a station focusing on contemporary Christian music. I don’t know much about this genre; however, I do know what my ear and mind like, and this channel works for me.

So if I don’t know many of the artists featured on this station, why does it earn a preset on my radio?

I find it pleasing

The tempo is upbeat

In general I don’t focus on lyrics as I like rhythms

When I do listen to lyrics, these have a positive message

I don’t listen to The Message all the time, but there are times I prefer it. Meanwhile, Stephen Curtis Chapman performed a concert after a recent Reds baseball game. Since I knew he’s won a Grammy and one heard on The Message, I stuck around for the post-game concert … and it was well done! I was amazed at the number of people who knew the lyrics to many of his songs.

Below are two songs I’ve enjoyed on The Message plus a Stephen Curtis Chapman video. See what you think … and if you like the sound, turn to XM Channel 32.
“Hearing that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, the Pharisees got together. One of them, an e

“Hearing that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, the Pharisees got together. One of them, an expert in the law, tested him with this question: ’Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?’ Jesus replied, ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself. All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”

~Matthew 22:34-40

Take time to imagine what it would have been like to be an eye witness on this crime scene. Here Jesus is, a man without sin, healing the sick, casting out demons, feeding the hungry, teaching the lost, and those who were more concerned about the law tried to trap Him. They didn’t like how He showed up on the scene. They wanted to expose Him as a fraud, so they continued to scheme behind the scenes. When Jesus silenced the Sadducees, the Pharisees decided to take a shot at Him. They even sent their very best to ask the question they thought would get Jesus into trouble. vs. 35 says, “One of them (Pharisees), an expert in the law, tested him with this question…” An expert, REALLY? Sounds like someone is a little intimidated. Thankfully Jesus was never afraid of a little question. Yes, it was a crime to try and trap Jesus, as if He were someone to condemn. But Jesus handled the question graciously. He handled it with God’s Word. Just as we ought to handle the questions that daily come to us from people who surround us.

The question: Which is the greatest commandment in the Law?

Jesus response, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself.”

If you’re paying close attention, you will notice the crime scene has changed. Jesus is not the center of the scene any longer. The focus returns to the Pharisees. Where is their love? What is it that they are truly living for? The laws will not get them into heaven.

Both commandments are hinged on one key phrase, “LOVE YOURSELF”. This can be one of the most difficult things to do, as we look at ourselves and find all the flaws. We let God know what we can’t do, when He’s looking at us and saying, “I know what you can do. Are you willing?”

In the next couple of days, I will share some stories that Pastor Q from Grace Family Church shared last night at our High Dive class. It’s time to go deep. Time to live like the Stephen Curtis Chapman song “Dive” which says,

I’m diving in, I’m going deep in over
my head, I want to be
Cought in the rush, lost in the flow,
in over my head, I want to go
The river’s deep, the river’s wide,
the river’s water is alive
So sink or swim, I’m diving in

There is a supernatural power
In this might river’s flow
It can bring the dead to life
And it can fill an empty soul
And give a heart the only thing
Worth living and worth dying for, yeah
But we will never know the awesome power
Of the grace of God
Until we let ourselves get swept away
Into this holy flood
So if you’ll take my hand
We’ll close our eyes and count to three
And take the leap of faith
Come on let’s go

Are you ready to dive in? Do you want the most out of God that you can get? I’m so excited about who God is and lately I can’t get to sleep because I feel like a little girl giddy in love with the Lord. It’s exciting to live in the presence of the Father. Living deep in Him is a thousand times better than anything else this world can offer!

I’ve saved the best for last! This is so exciting! Are you ready? Brace yourself! I’ve studied the Word so much and really, truly enjoy every ounce of wisdom I can absorb from it. But last night at High Dive I learned something new that totally, one hundred percent made me want to dance in the freedom of God. There is JOY in His presence and I am basking in it after this new found wisdom! Okay, okay I will share it with you!

Pastor Q shared with us the verse Matthew 5:48 which says,

“Be perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect.”

He joked about how this is like the least amount of good news for most people, but this is when you don’t know the true context of the verse. So here it is.

The word “perfect” in Greek is Telas which means complete. Replace perfect with the word complete and you have a sentence that is so much more attainable.

“Be ‘complete’ as your heavenly Father is complete.”

God is calling us to a better life every day. He wants us to come with our broken pieces, our fragments, the things that don’t make sense. He will put it all together and make us into a beautiful piece of mosaic art which the light of His Son Jesus Christ can shine through. Only through Jesus can we be truly COMPLETE! I pray you will embrace this opportunity to run to God and give Him the fragments of your life, so that He can make a beautiful mosaic artwork out of you!

Lord, You are completely amazing! I’m in awe of the wonders You perform on a daily basis. I praise You for this day and the Joy I have in knowing that my life is complete because I have You in it. I’m so blessed because I wake up knowing I get to live my days for You. I can’t imagine anything better than loving You each and every day. Thank you for the wonderful privilege I have to be a child of God.

God is God and I am man. So I’ll never understand it all. For only God is God.”

I absolutely love this chorus from the song “God is God” by Stephen Curtis Chapman. There are quite a few things in my life that I have went through that I still to this day don’t understand (and I’m not going into details about it), and I blamed everyone including myself and asked why countless times. I was too upset about why I was having to go through these certain things to realize that everything happens for a reason and that it is ALL in God’s plan and will for my life. He knows what He is doing and He won’t allow anything to be thrown at me or anyone else that can’t be handled. Everything that happens in my life is coming together piece by piece to make a brilliant masterpiece that is entitled “God’s Will for My Life”. As the song says “I can only see a part of the picture He is painting.” I can only see what has happened and how He has brought me through each thing, and though I can not see how it all fits together to make the finished work quite yet. I know that without a shadow of a doubt that once He is finished, it is going to be wonderful creation and I am so excited to see it.

God is so great and often works in such unanticipated ways. I never saw it coming, but 2008 was the year of abandon:

Abandoned a comfortable and stable youth pastorate to join a volunteer church planting effort and work nights in a hospital storeroom

Abandoned a comfortable, safe suburban home to rent a room on the third floor of a hispanic family’s home in a dodgy neighborhood

Abandoned a comfortable, late-model convertible to drive the ghetto-cruiser–a 96′ Civic hatchback with no power steering

“If anyone comes to me and does not hate his father and mother, his wife and children, his brothers and sisters—yes, even his own life—he cannot be my disciple.” Luke 14:26

This Stephen Curtis Chapman song has inspired me since my teen years:

We will abandon it all for the sake of the call
No other reason at all but the sake of the call
Wholly devoted to live and to die for the sake of the call

Nobody stood and applauded them
So they knew from the start
This road would not lead to fame
All they really knew for sure
Was Jesus had called to them
He said “come follow Me” and they came
With reckless abandon, they came

Empty nets lying there at the water’s edge
Told a story that few could believe
And none could explain
How some crazy fisherman agreed to go where Jesus went
With no thought to what they would gain
For Jesus had called them by name
And they answered…

We will abandon it all for the sake of the call
No other reason at all but the sake of the call
Wholly devoted to live and to die for the sake of the call
The sake of the call

Drawn like the rivers are drawn to the sea
There’s no turning back, for the water cannot help but flow
Once we hear the Savior’s call, we’ll follow wherever He leads
Because of the love he has shown
And because He has called us to go
We will answer…

We will abandon it all for the sake of the call
No other reason at all but the sake of the call
Wholly devoted to live and to die

Not for the sake of a creed or a cause
Not for a dream or a promise
Simply because it is Jesus who called
And if we believe we’ll obey

We will abandon it all for the sake of the call
No other reason at all but the sake of the call
We will abandon it all for the sake of the call
No other reason at all but the sake of the call
Wholly devoted to live and to die for the sake of the call
For the sake of the call
We will abandon it all

The video below is the inspiration for the newest story I wrote a few days ago. I love this Christmas album by Stephen Curtis Chapman and this particular song, “All I Really Want for Christmas,” has just made me so contemplative this holiday season. I know a lot of people adopting/have adopted recently and one of the jobs we’ll be doing when we get to Peru is helping build a Children’s Home on campus. Brian and I know that someday, the Lord will have us adopt. Even though a newborn would be really neat, I really feel the Lord would have us take in a child who’s a little older, and give them the home and the love they’ve never had. So, since Thanksgiving (when my Christmas music began playing in earnest!), I’ve been thinking about this song and wondering how I could write a story to go along with it. I finally sat down on Friday night and came up with the one that’s listed under “My Writings.” It’s called “A Christmas Prayer”, but I’d be open to new suggestions for the title! Give it a read; let me know what you think. From here on out, I’m going to just post the new title of the story I post next to “My Writings” so you can be sure to know whenever I change it. Enjoy! Please let me know what you think!

What is CompassionArt?

If you don’t yet know about CompassionArt it’s time to get familiar. This movement has such radical potential for the Kingdom of God. Martin Smith, front man for the epic band Delirious and his wife, Anna, are following the next dream God has put in their hearts for this next season of their lives. Delirious will come to a closing chapter in the very near future from what we can tell.

I, personally, believe that God has been sort of priming the pump for what this movement could do to meet the needs of those that are less fortunate. Those being traded out in the sex slave, those without food and water, those without a mother or father, the oppressed and those who don’t yet have the hope in the liberating power of our ressurected Jesus! This is a movement that’s after the heart of God and I pray that it sweeps the world with crazy success.

Try and get throught his vision and look at the people that are involved in this project. Some of the Christian music worlds most talented and prophetic songwriters/worship leaders and hearts! The below is from the CompassionArt Website under their vision piece.

So what is CompassionArt?!

You want the short answer? Here it goes;

CompassionArt is a charity that joins the dots between art and poverty. It raises money to help breathe life into the poorest communities, restoring hope and igniting justice.

You’ve got a bit more time? Try this;

It all started with a sense that music really ought to be able to sit well with justice. Yet in a world of album sales and royalty cheques, it can be hard to see how the two link up. So, a plan evolved; create a little music (and eventually, quite a bit more) and use all of the money from those album sales and royalty cheques to support those working among the world’s poorest communities.

These thoughts came first to the heads and hearts of Martin and Anna Smith. Martin’s years at the front of the stage with Delirious have given him a unique perspective; across every continent he has seen at first hand the potential that music has to connect. And he has seen poverty – the crushing sort, the type that chokes hope and suffocates life. And he has seen remarkable people doing remarkable things to break poverty’s hold.

In January 2008 – after a year and a half of planning – Martin and Anna were joined by 11 other songwriters for the first CompassionArt retreat. Next to a Scottish Loch a few hours north of Glasgow were these dozen writers who between them had written pretty much every song the church has been singing over the last decade.

A week later and the group emerged with a whole load of new songs that are bound to provide the soundtrack for the coming years; songs that answered the question ‘what’s faith got to do with poverty?’

Four weeks later and the writers were gathered in Abbey Road to record the best fifteen tracks from the retreat.

Five days later and they had the bones of an album.

In the months that followed Martin and fellow producers Les Moir and Matt Bronleewe added the flesh, drawing in yet more artists from the world of Christian music.

And as the music took shape so too did the plot; each of the twelve writers nominated a charity to which 1/24th of CompassionArt royalties will go to. The remaining 50 per cent of the funds raised will be distributed among projects that CompassionArt wants to give extra support – such as the Watoto community in Uganda. There, orphaned children are given food, shelter, education and a loving, caring home as they rebuild their lives. CompassionArt will provide funding for a series of music and arts centres that support the world-famous Watoto Children’s Choir, as well as offering essential training for those wanting to pursue a future in the arts.

Today – a few months before the release of the first CompassionArt album – there is anticipation draped all over the project. The involvement of the twelve writers; Michael W Smith, Israel Houghton, Darlene Zschech, Matt Redman, Tim Hughes, Stu G, Chris Tomlin, Graham Kendrick, Stephen Curtis Chapman, Andy Park and Paul Baloche didn’t just guarantee plenty of exposure. Their skills have combined to make an album that pushes, inspires and challenges in all the right places.

The story has covered so many pages already, yet in many ways it has yet to really begin. This first album – as well as the book that partners it – will generate income for years to come, giving compassion and art a more meaningful way of working together.

This is late, but I just now was able to listen to part three this morning after starting this over a week ago. If you haven’t heard Dr. Dobson’s interview with Stephen Curtis Chapman about the accident, try to take some time out for it this week. Tears poured as I listened – part three especially resonated with my thoughts after God took Dad Home…

Dobson: “Stephen, are you & Mary Beth angry at God?”
Chapman: “We are not. Honestly. I am angry… very, very angry at the Enemy of God… the Thief comes to steal, kill, and destroy.”

My feelings exactly! This whole grief process over the last few years has driven me there, too. Have I written about it? Yeah, I guess I have somewhat (last paragraph). I’ll leave it at that.

Part one fills you in on what happened, part two tells us more about who Maria is, and part three talks about life since. Grab tissues, just a warning.

Postscript next morning. The faces of the Chapman family were in my mind and heart all night. We have a daughter from China and a teen son too. Our daughter watched with us, who is now 12. The story touched her. Over time, perhaps we will discover how much.

Is it really 5 years ago that I was great with my first child? FIVE years that I have been a mother?

Is it really 5 years ago that I was great with my first child? FIVE years that I have been a mother?? I look at Grace today and am stunned at how quickly time has gone by. It seems just yesterday that I was up in the middle of the night with my newborn, reading the latest installment of Harry Potter while nursing her back to sleep. Just yesterday that a huge 3 -4 foot stork came to visit and walk around in my pool when Grace was just a few days old. My mom and I think he was making sure all was well at our home.

When Grace was just a few weeks old, I recall meeting my friends with their newborns at the Cocoa Village park. We strolled through the park, talking about motherhood and how it had changed us and what we were anticipating. One friend said, “Do you know what I’m most looking forward to? Bubble baths!” It’s such a simple thing. And now I think about how we ran out of Bubble Bath a few months ago and I haven’t bothered to replace it, thinking of it as unimportant.

My girl is tall and skinny, with curly hair that she hates to have brushed. Her legs are so long that I’ve suggested she wear bike shorts under her dresses, which she refuses. She loves to play with friends, and she puts on these new high heeled shiny red dress shoes that are 2 sizes too big for her every chance she gets, so that she can tap dance on our wood floor to songs on TV. Her current favorite is a song Big Bird sings when he misses his best friend, Snuffy, on “Elmo Saves Christmas.” She wears hair bows and head bands, sometimes all at once, and loves to dress up and be “fancy”. She has a closet filled with dresses. I don’t know how to break it to her that in kindergarten, she must wear the school uniform: Khaki shorts or skirts, with a leather belt, and solid navy, green or white polo shirts. I’m sure she’ll find a way to fancy it up–probably with elaborate hairbows and pins.

Her last day of preschool was yesterday. When I picked her up from school, I almost cried. I didn’t–but it was a very close call. To reflect on the past 5 years and realize that my girl is starting kindergarten in the fall is quite a reality check. Time goes by so quickly–the present is so fleeting. How much time have I wasted worrying about tomorrow or dwelling on the past? Today is all I have. CS Lewis talks about this concept in the Screwtape Letters, where in a demon is advising a subordinate how to trip up humans:

The humans live in time but our Enemy destines them to eternity. He therefore, I believe, wants them to attend chiefly to two things, to eternity itself, and to that point of time which they call the Present. For the Present is the point at which time touches eternity. Of the present moment, and of it only, humans have an experience analogous to the experience which our Enemy has of reality as a whole; in it alone freedom and actuality are offered them. He would therefore have them continually concerned either with eternity (which means being concerned with Him) or with the Present–either meditating on their eternal union with, or separation from, Himself,or else obeying the present voice of conscience, bearing the present cross, receiving the present grace, giving thanks for the present pleasure.

Our business is to get them away from the eternal, and from the Present. . . . We sometimes tempt a human. . . to live in the Past. But this is of limited value, for they have some real knowledge of the past and it has a determinate nature and, to that extent, resembles eternity. It is far better to make them live in the Future. . . . It is unknown to them, so that in making them think about it we make them think of unrealities. In a word, the Future is, of all things, the thing least like eternity. It is the most completely temporal part of time–for the Past is frozen and no longer flows, and the Present is all lit up with eternal rays. . . . Gratitude looks to the past and love to the present; fear, avarice, lust and ambition look ahead.

To be sure, the Enemy wants men to think of the Future, too–just so much as is necessary for now planning the acts of justice or charity which will probably be their duty tomorrow. The duty of planning the morrow’s work is today’s duty; though its material is borrowed from the future, the duty, like all duties, is in the Present. . . He does not want men to give the Future their hearts, to place their treasure in it. His ideal is a man who, having worked all day for the good of posterity, washes his mmind of the whole subject, commits the issue to Heaven, and returns at once to the patience or gratitude demanded by the moment that is passing over him.

Oh, to be the ideal human. Steven Curtis Chapman sings a song called, “Miracle of the Moment.”
