shahrizan, prof adeeba and the amazing bernard!

On Saturday, May 22, 2010, over ten thousand New Yorkers will once again dance down Broadway to Tompkins Square Park…moving to every kind of dance music under the sun and showcasing New York’s phenomenally diverse forms of dance – world cultural, performance, club and more!!!

In its Fourth Year and amongst dozens of beautifully crafted floats, live bands, and sound systems, Country Western dancers will two-Step while UK Garagers 2Step, Salseros break on two while Bboys break on the pavement, swingers swingout, burners wig out, househeads jack, and partners jack and jill, too!! NewYork City will dance together as never before.Upon arriving in the park, Dance Fest invites New York’s dancers to realize and celebrate our unity with social dance, performances on stage and workshops and lessons—all free to the public.

The New York Dance Parade will draw thousands of participants, and bring fresh, highly positive attention to a vibrant art-form, enriching our City with the goodwill and patronage of millions of thrilled dance enthusiasts in New York and worldwide!

Thank You New York City!

We are thrilled to announce that for the first time, Dance Parade Inc (DPI), a 501©3 non-profit organization, was awarded a grant from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA). In previous years, DPI was granted DCA funding through the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council but this is the first time to receive support directly from the City’s Department of Cultural Affairs. Public support in this manner truley represents a milestone in the successful realization of our charitable venture to promote dance as an expressive form of art. Thank you NYC, the thousands of dancers and a special thanks to Commissioner Kate Levin and her team including Program Specialist Shruti Adhar for their committment to support “One Parade – Many Cultures!” Funding from this program will support DPI’s Educational Program, bringing dance into schools, Parade Gruop Scholarships and support for DanceFest in Tompkins Square Park.

As we reflect on a year of challenges for our city and our nation, these words resonate. They remind us of the power, potential and joy that dance brings to us all, regardless of wealth, health or ethnicity.

Joy – a fundamental human need throughout cultures around the world – is especially meaningful during times of national challenges.
Whether dancers, schools, dance studios, social service agencies, choreographers, artists or friends like you, community partners helped make this one of our most exciting years yet. We shared ideas, creative inspiration, expertise, and celebrated the cultural richness of dance. What we’ve accomplished, working together, has been magical and profound.

Partnerships presented us with inspiring ways express the unity of dance and share this most democratic of art forms with tens of thousands.

Our work with partners continues as we prepare to embark on our most ambitious Dance Parade yet. This year our all-volunteer team is already hard at work to double parade participation in 2010. Our outreach team is already in the communities that you will see in this year’s parade.
When Dance Parade was established in 2006, we made a commitment to promote dance as an expressive and unifying art form by showcasing all forms of dance.

This year we set a record. For the first time in history 60 styles of dance celebrated dance openly, freely and joyously down Broadway.

This year’s Parade and Festival was chock-full of sun-kissed dancers, from a busload of dancers from Kansas City to an astounding aerial dance troupe in Tompkins Square Park. In showcasing this broad, international spectrum of dance we are fulfilling our promise as one of the broadest reaching and readily accessible dance organizations in the country. For three years now we have reached out to partners, and you have reached back. In fact, only through partnership — both participation and support — has the dream of a national dance parade become a reality.

Today, we extend a hand to you. We ask for your financial support, but also — equally important — we extend a hand inviting you to join us, join the parade this year, share the excitement. With your tax-deductable contribution dance will impact the lives of several thousands. Every single dollar makes a huge difference. Be a part of this history. One Parade, Many Cultures. As partners, we can do amazing things!

Thank you for your support and participation. We hope to see you at this year’s parade!

Shireen Dickson, this year’s Production Director was chosen for this issue’s Volunteer Spotlight. Shireen and I had a little virtual interview and here it is…

How did you first stumble upon Dance Parade? How many years have you been involved?I was out of town during the first dance parade, and I said that the next year no matter what I was going to be part of it in some way ( I put it in my calendar to look up the following year). DP combines two of my favorite things — spectacle and dancing — beyond the volunteering aspect. I figured taking on a leadership role (and I had the time) would get me directly into the action, and I was right, hooked for life.

What is your favourite style of dance to watch? to participate in?

favorite style to watch — authentic, when I can feel the performer in my body

favorite style to participate – freestyle

If you could share the stage with anyone in history famous or not, living or deceased, a trained dancer or not, performing a routine choreographed by yourself…who would it be?
Katherine Dunham….or Josephine Baker if she wasn’t available

Here’s what Shireen would like to say to prospective volunteers…

for all of those people who like making things happen with other people who like making things happen…people who are passionate about something and self-driven…people who have an open artistic sensibility and adventurous spirit and want that to keep getting fed!

We asked a few Dance Parade members to say a little something about Shireen and her work over the years…here’s what Mel Alvarez, DP’s Managing Director had to share with us…

“I have known Shireen Rowina Dickson for the past two years. She is a person of intelligence who balances professionalism with keen social skill. This, coupled with her background in dance and production, makes her a invaulable member of the Dance Parade team. Personally, I love her no-nonsense approach to getting what needs to be done — done.”

The art of flagging dance sometimes called flag dancing or rag spinning, but more commonly referred to as flagging, is the undulation, spinning and waving of flags in a rhythmic fashion to music. Practitioners of this form of performance art and dance are usually referred to as “flaggers” and “flag dancers”, though until the 1990s this mostly referred to those waving flags to aid transportation professions

The added weights to the otherwise loose fabric made it possible for the new flaggers to spin and move the fabric through the air in ways similar to fan dancing, but with the added maneuverability of a very flexible material. Flags used by these new flaggers can be of almost any fabric, but silk, organza and lamé are preponderant, with silk being the most favored. Silk flags are usually dyed in vibrant, ultraviolet, fluorescent colors, creating an almost hypnotic spectacle when waved rhythmically to music.

The Artist Mykel is currently the Artistic Director of NYC Flaggers. The Flaggers were last seen on stage at Santos House Party for the Lift Off 2010 Dance Registration Kickoff and Fundraiser Event on Sunday, November 8th. The performance featured Mykel’s signature otherworldly vocals showcasing his dance single “Glossy Pink Nails” accented by a wildly colorful flag dancing display and featuring a guest appearance by Tina Thompson. Although his songs and performances can have a dark and brooding undertone, there is always an uplifting crescendo present and Mykel feels that by default, the flags are magnificent elevators of feeling and expression during the performance and for the music itself.

Mykel and NYC Flaggers have been a part of Dance Parade since its inception four years ago and his and their involvement has grown with each year, performing at International Dance Day (IDD) prior to last year’s Parade and Mykel hopes the group will be one of the featured acts on the main stage at DanceFest, a festival housed in Tompkins Square Park featuring a wildly eccentric mix of performances by groups representing a healthy rainbow of cultures and styles and forged from an invitation only process that guarantees a diverse lineup made up of Dance Parade veterans as well as newer groups that have registered for the first time. He plans to space out the group letting the more social

Hello there…I am Chauncey D,
the new editor of STEPS! magazine! I really hope that you like what you see! I have been volunteering for Dance Parade since the magical first year and began as one of the original members of the Dance Police. Later on during the very first post parade Festival, I jumped in and helped with the festival production that year and have been stage managing the Dance Fest performances ever since.
This year, I wanted to get a lot more involved in the planning and promotional process instead of just jumping in head first on the day of the event. Boy did I get what I asked for in the best way possible! I am honored to be a part of such a historical and vastly important event here in NYC and am thankful for the opportunity to be responsible for this project and hope this newsletter makes my fellow volunteers proud of their decision to allow me this responsibility…but enough mushy stuff. You should be dancing!

Before you go…
Have you thought of volunteering with us? Trust me…it will be one of the best experiences of your life and you get to hold a piece of NYC history in your soul forever! And we don’t just need help the day of the parade. There is a tremendous amount of work involved in pulling a production of this magnitude together every year from creative design to outreach to grant writing to cleaning up big messes and of course dancing! For more info send an email to DJ@danceparade.org and tell him Chauncey sent ya!

From the time we are able to walk, we have a curiosity to climb. And for some the curiosity is stronger than others. Some have the motivation and instinct to climb more than others – for instance those who choose to rock climb, or climb Mount Everest. For others, the climb can be difficult – and not necessarily because they are not agile, it has more to do with the idea of being overwhelmed with such a climb.

If you’ve ever watched a determined child climb up on a counter to get to a cupboard to reach cookies that they are not supposed to eat, you know that for some, climbing is really about reward.

And that’s how we should look at climbing – for every step we take is another step toward reaching a goal, reaching a dream, reaching upward to touch faith or overcoming an obstacle.

I was in a store the other day watching a father and son argue. The son was about 12 years old. The father was arguing with his son about how he should play Guitar Hero. The son was basically arguing that he had played the game before and that he wanted the game because he liked it. The father was determined that his son forego the game as a pre-cursor to him learning to play an instrument and if he was going to learn music, he might as well learn it the ‘right way’ and take lessons.

This made me ponder the idea of the two parallel ladders of the climb. The father’s climb was more about structure, getting an early start. Perhaps he was reflecting upon his own path of regret in his childhood, or basically one of control and discipline. The son’s climb was about experimentation, baby-stepping on his ladder to enjoy the idea of the game he liked to play. What the father failed to realize was that maybe if the son enjoyed this game that maybe his son might choose to climb his ladder eventually, but was basically experimenting with music at this stage. And what the son failed to realize was that his father would be willing to pay for a ‘real’ guitar to learn on, something he wouldn’t actually have to ask for, because his father was open to the idea. The father was probably hoping his son would realize other kids would give their right arm for what was just offered. While the son wasn’t ready to take on that offering, and merely only wanted the game.

It is interesting to examine this argument. It was even more interesting to examine the two ladders each chose to climb. What was even more fascinating than that was that there was a third ladder there, one which neither father nor son chose to put a foot on… the one of understanding where the other was coming from and instead choosing to just argue and argue. In reality, both wanted something. And both were ultimately wanting a positive outcome. But neither could step outside of the argument to realize this.

And yes, there was yet a fourth ladder here – one of perspective. And this is a ladder the son will appreciate when he’s say, 30 or 40 or when his father is dead – that he had a father to spend time with, and yes, even argue with and that he had a father who wanted to go shopping in a store with him and want something more for him. And the father will step foot on this ladder when the son is older, off having his own life and realize that his son’s life is the way it is because all along, the son was a baby-stepper in his climb, taking on obstacles. He chose to explore things his way with his independent likes and dislikes, not always conforming to what his father’s ideas were.

It’s an interesting set of ladders. No ladder is right or wrong. But the ladders are there. Each chose to step on their own ladders their way.

What we need to think about with our own ladders is that for every ladder we choose to climb, there are other ladders present. Sometimes our actions will affect someone else’s ladder. Sometimes we need to look beyond our own ladder. And sometimes still, we need to be patient with ourselves and the steps we take – no matter how big or how small or even if we fall off the ladder. We need to cherish the ladder, taking steps and honor the fact that making the climb is part of life. This is how we learn about ourselves and what we’re made of. But it’s also important for us to examine that the ladder isn’t as important as the people in our lives who either are on ladders, at the bottom of ladders in the middle of ladders, stuck on their ladders or those who are rebuilding their ladders after a fire.

And no matter where we are on the ladder, if we are indeed climbing, we are living life. We don’t need to compare ourselves and our ladders to anyone else’s, nor judge others and the climb they are on. Each is for purpose. We have our own surprises at the top of our own ladders and we’ll even see surprises at the top of other’s ladders.

But regardless of where we are, we must attempt the climb. And we must keep climbing, even if it is baby-stepping it our way, our own way, to discover more along the way, as we ascend up our ladder.

One of the great gifts of the ladder is that it is there, for us to climb, when we choose as we choose and how we choose. And that is the ladder of life – growing, climbing, learning and becoming more aware, more educated so that as we look all around, the view just becomes more beautiful for us to see. Especially if we are looking at all the faces of others on their ladders and appreciate them as they are.
Keep climbing.

That is because this is a vertorama, aka 2 shots stitched together like a panorama, except they are stitched vertically. The picture is warped a bit to insure that every pixel in both shots are perfectly lined up. Also, both shots were comprised of 5 exposures each which were then HDR’d in Photomatix before stitching them together.

As the heading suggests, you very well know who’s been on my hitlist of trash talking these days. Bollywood. Aaah, music to my ears, a source of everlasting trashtalk. Well lets face it, Bollywood was never and has never been original except for a few cases. C’mon, even the name has been taken from Hollywood. Atleast we all know Hollywood is a place in USA, Is there a place called Bollywood here?HELL NO!

Hey who said you cant become an actor and it’s sooo tough in Bollywood? Nah. You don’t need to know acting at all! Here are the steps, especially for the women who want to start out.

Just head to an expensive gym, preferably a famous one where most of the celebs head to, say a Mickey Mehta or a Leena Mogre, get a good bod, shoot a portfolio, send it to all production houses, do a few endorsements or participate in Miss India or Miss Asia or whatever modelling contest you can get your hands on, do a few favours here and there if required and then wait to get your first call from Bollywood, everyone’s dream place to be

If you don’t know dialogues don’t worry, dubbing artists are mostly out of work.. Look at Celina Jaitley. She’s 7-10 or more films old maybe, but still she does a favour for not just the homosexuals by fighting for their rights, but also these dub artists who have to be called to dub for her in every single movie. if you don’t know acting, don’t worry, you won’t be doing much in the movie anyway. You are just there to shake a leg or two with top actors and be arm or eye candy like Katrina Kaif, the barbie of all movies. When she doesn’t get her expressions right, she throws her big smile ( a cheat you can learn). To become famous, you don’t need hard work. Hellooo, you are in Bollywood. Sign up a publicist who will splash all your pictures on the papers, magazines etc.

Attend a Page 3 party. Laugh a lot about nothing and get a picture clicked and watch your headlines go up ‘ Party starter’. You get paid to pose too, mind you, tsk tsk, didn’t realise Bollywood is so poor.

Next you just pursue a young happening hot actor whos at the peak of his career and is super rich at about that time. take Kareena Kapoor or Aishwarya Rai for example. Kareena hooked up with Saif ( the Nawab’s son and hes splashing in riches) and Aishwarya hooked up with Abhishek Bachchan to be with famous father in law Amitabh Bachchan. Famous bahu in a famous family. Simple as that.

Get a posh flat in Bandra or Juhu or Worli Sea Face. let everyone see you are at a hip and happening joint.

Then later just go up one level. Show some more skin, take a few lessons from the sad ass kisser of Bollywood Emraan Hashmi on doing steamy scenes and voila, you are up the next level.

Go, feed some orphans , click some pics with them( refer my previous post for a detail on that), make donations, yeah, even if you donate only a rupee, you are gonna get interviewed for your kindness. Have Coffee with Karan or Farah Khan in her Beech.

Put your cigarette behind you when your pics get clicked and tell the public about your fad diet, your work outs and size zeros, secrets of your glowing skin, make up, your new car, supposed friends, shoot, new movies etcs. Bollywood is very good with dialogues, so you can go on repeating the same shit over and over again , the same shit that the others are talking about. (that is my next post so watch out for the clichéd lines I am talking about). Do some fashion ka Jalwa. seriously even if you have the slightest of cold or sneeze, you are gonna be headlines next day ‘ OMG, XXX has a cold!’

The next step would be call up your publicist and tell her that you want an article splashed around regarding your endorsements and your so-called Hollywood movie. Ya, it,s all right, even if you are there only for 2 seconds in one frame of the entire one hour English movie, you are still acting for those 2 seconds by standing there Don’t let your publicist just go after that, ask her to set you up in a controversy. Go attend a red carpet event and show a cold shoulder to your co-star. Perform on stage even if you are bad at dancing, coz you knoe everyone is gonna cheer for you and you will be asked to perform at a posh hotel this coming new year! Simple isn’t it?

Then later after you have splurged all your boyfriend’s riches and see that his career is declining, send him your divorce papers and tell the media that he was ‘not the one, I haven’t found the right man yet, but we are still friends’(yeah right).

That’s the head and tail of fame friends.

I have already shown you the main steps. Now go and make your choice and join the Bollywood bandwagon!

My golly gosh!. Was watching TV and on came an old ABBA tribute special with songs performed by British musicians from the 90s. This triggered a whole lotta nostalgia regarding the period of time that shaped how I view pop music today. While me fellow blacks were listening to Tupac, Biggie and Mase, I was all up on MTV and VH1 listening to Steps, B*Witched, 5ive, 311, S Club 7, All Saints, Cleopatra, Billie. The songs were just plain pop without pretense. I know some people like to be deep but sometimes, you just have to take it for what it is. Ah, youth! Good ass times!

Welcome to the eighth in my series of 10 blog posts. Stick with me for all 10 steps, and you’ll be armed with all of the information you need to get out there and purchase a home.

Step 8 Get Insurance

We wouldn’t drive our cars without insurance, right?

Most of us get health insurance to cover the doctor’s bills, right?

So why wouldn’t you insure your home? This is the biggest investment you’ll probably ever make. You need to protect it.

There are several types of insurance involved in purchasing a home.

Title insurance: This is paid for, typically, with an up-front fee at the time of closing. A title insurance policy protects the purchasers against any defects in the title (ownership) of the home. This compensates buyers for any damages resulting from undiscovered claims against the home’s ownership. A “lender’s policy” covers the amount of the mortgage. An “owner’s policy” covers that amount as well as the amount of the down payment.

Homeowner’s insurance: This type of policy covers fire, theft, and liability. Lenders require this coverage when you take out a home loan. It not only protects their investment in the home, but it protects your property. Many items can be covered under homeowner’s insurance; wedding rings, office equipment, and furniture for example.

Flood insurance: Generally required in high-risk flood-plane areas, this insurance is issued by the federal government and provides as much as $250,000 in coverage for a single-family home plus $100,000 for contents. Ask your Realtor if your chosen home is in a flood-plain and what choices in flood insurance exist.

Home warranty: Not necessarily an insurance plan in itself, a home warranty protects the purchaser in the event that things start to break in the home. Home warranties bought from third parties by home builders are generally designed to provide several forms of protection: workmanship for the first year, mechanical problems such as plumbing and wiring for the first two years, and structural defects for up to 10 years. Home warranties are typically 1-year service plans bought by the seller. If, within that year, something were to break that was covered under the warranty, the warranty company would step in and take care of it.

Your Realtor can point you in the right direction when it comes to getting information on home insurance. A good insurance broker can access rate quotes from several different companies and put together the best coverage that will meet your needs.

Now that you’ve learned how to protect this sizable investment, you’re ready to close on it! Come back next time and we’ll talk about getting your keys and moving on in!

12/19/09 – 2,414

50 minutes of cardio in the form of shoveling snow!

Food Journal – No

Good morning Mintdom,

It is 11:28 on Sunday morning and I wanted to get this started before I go out to shovel. I had a low step count yesterday, but I added cardio because I yesterday we got almost 2 feet of snow and I shoveled my driveway to try and keep up with it a little. I figure by the time I could get out.. I did not want to shovel the whole thing at once! There is a huge mound at the end of my driveway. Another good reason to get strong is to be able to shovel snow.

About 20 Inches on my Patio Table

OK… it is afternoon… I have shoveled, cooked, ate lunch (leftover spaghetti and salad), talked with my daughter and worked on my farm. Now I am listening to Christmas music and getting ready to put up some decorations. I do not know about the rest of you, but I REALLY like this snow thing. I am not getting steps in BUT I am burning a lot of calories! Lol

Just Think of ALL the Calories I Burned!

I had help with my driveway at the end. My neighbors – two that I just met – helped dig out the last of it where the plow blocked my driveway. It was the hardest part because it had not been touched. <patting herself on the back> I have to say though… that I am proud of myself for shoveling all the black top. Just think of all those calories burned!!! I can feel it already though!

“The aging process has you firmly in its grasp if you never get the urge to throw a snowball.” – Dough Larson

:::::: running out and throwing a snowball at my house:::::: I do not want to be accused of being old (shut up Bruce) lolol. You can look at snow as you look at life. You can look at it as an inconvenience, troublesome, an interruption, hard work, and difficult OR you can look at it as beautiful, wonderful, pure, a way to burn calories, a way to make new friends and lots of fun! It is a choice. I choose the latter.

AffirMINTion: I love snow and all the opportunities it brings!

Make it a GREAT day, IF you choose to.

Life is good!

Last week my friend Sean and I ditched Chicago and headed south. Our first stop was in Louisville, KY, where we spent a few days with my closest friend in the world, Susanah. Susanah (or Snoozanah, as I sometimes call her) and I have been best friends since we were little girls. Through puberty, high school, college, grad school, and now our late 20’s (agh!), we’ve been there to support and affirm one another. That support and affirmation was often related to our clothing choices; there was no shortage of, “Ooh, I love that shirt!” or “You look amazing in that dress!” Our chemistry teacher, Mr. Thomas, once made fun of us for being so impressed with and complimentary to one another.

Our mutual admiration society has never been stronger than it is these days. In addition to catching up, playing music, and talking our heads off late into the night, we took some time to play in our clothes on this trip and say, “Man, you look hot!” to each other about a bazillion times.

Following is our little photo shoot from the first day we spent wandering around Louisville. We took these photos on the banks of the Ohio River and at some steps next to an art cooperative. (Other photo shoots to come!) Checking out Louisville with sartoriography as my lens was really fun and gave me a significant appreciation for what an interesting and aesthetically appealing city it is.

Thanks to Sean for taking some of the photos of me. And thanks to Susanah for almost two decades of “Whoa, you look awesome!” What woman doesn’t need a friend like that?

To search for a new LCD TV to buy, but we want to be sure that you spend your hard-earned money for

To search for a new LCD TV to buy, but we want to be sure that you spend your hard-earned money for a series that in fact exactly what they want and need? Now think of this as a simple step by step to ensure a perfectly matched LCD TV for you. If you are looking for a new television for your living room, a portable for your bedroom or even a number to connect to your favorite game console, this guide will help you make the right choice.

1) The size of the screendecisive!

Determine the correct screen size for your needs is an important decision that just made the beginning. Until now, LCD TVs are more often in smaller, usually no larger than 27 inches, but with the great leap forward in display technology, this is not the case. A larger screen does not necessarily mean a deterioration in picture quality, but it is important that the size of the screen to the size of the room you want to match. For example, a40-inch LCD screen in a small bedroom would not just once, and take part in a lot of space, but that would mean the user to sit so close to the screen the images that seem unclear and difficult to observe . To get the best results from your investment, remember what your parents say, the habit of sitting too close to the TV. His mother was probably concerned about your health, but in this case, think of your viewing pleasure. For optimal viewingExperience, you must obtain the correct distance between the image area and the screen of television. So a sensible choice when deciding on screen size you want and watch the size of the room.

2) But what about the tuner?

The current flat panel displays have a tuner for standard transmission and reception of analog TV via cable and also a transmission of HDTV. But some did not come with a tuner at all. These are rare, but now it is always worthConsideration that has the potential purchase of your tuner. Many devices also have built-in tuner for digital TV via cable. Although such tuners have a standard for the management of encrypted premium channels (eg, do not support HBO), many sets, so you know exactly what you need. If you want this feature, make sure you buy the set has a CableCard slot.

3) I need HDMI? Yes you do!

One can say that there are some good deals for the sets in circulation, nothave an HDMI input. You can also have a persistent seller tells you that is not a requirement for you, but do not listen. If possible, you should certainly have an LCD TV has an HDMI input. This way, the new TV is compatible with HDTV sources such as HD digital receiver, satellite HD and Blu-ray and HD-DVD. High definition is the right way and all the major manufacturers, including these features in their new models.

4) The remote is the bestFriend!

It 'very useful and very important to know on the remote before you splash your cash. A good remote can be your best friend, but a bad remote your worst enemy can just as well. Check out the most important functions, such as the layout, the quality and the feeling of size. Make sure that the keys are large enough to be easily and conveniently. Make sure that the text or characters that are printed on the remote to read and make sure that the size you need. There is no sense, aextremely small, isolated, if it is difficult to find the keys!

5) Take the proof.

Like most of us, you'll probably hate pushy salespeople, and for the demonstration in the field to jump. Do not! They want the features you tend to use most, such as setting the timer or program leader with the option to show the DVD player or the built-in tuner. They are not just a demo first hand the work of your LCD TV, but you will also see howdifficult or easy to use the property.

In order to have, to our 5 easy steps to buying the perfect LCD TV your needs, your home and your pocket! Memory, each of the points mentioned above, when navigating into new areas and you are sure of a design you like to update you can find it over the years.
Sounds like a crazy title for a blog post, but “Knowing” is what I believe to be the strongest and m

Sounds like a crazy title for a blog post, but “Knowing” is what I believe to be the strongest and most powerful part of a success mindset. When you have carefully researched and thought about pursuing a major goal and you have considered all of the positives and negatives, you have thought about the path you will need to travel and you weighed the effort versus the results and then set the goal you “Know”.

You know that the goal that you are going to accomplish is right for you and you are capable of achieving that goal. This knowing is the main component of a success mindset that will take you to the finish line. Many people set goals, but few accomplish their goals. Most give up within days and some throw in the towel within hours.

A Success Mindset Knows

When you have set the goal and started your way down the path to your destination of success you know that you will come across barriers and obstacles, but you also know that a success mindset has the power to move you around or past those obstacles and to break through those barriers. You know that you will achieve your goal regardless of the challenges and obstacles.

You know that you have the success mentality that is required to see you past any temporary defeat and distractions, and the only option you have is success and the accomplishment of your goal.

Knowing More Than Believing of A Success Mindset

Believing has been the word used is the setting and achieving of goals, but knowing goes beyond believing. The knowing of a success mindset is a step above believing. To many people believing is something of a blind faith, it seems to say that it is possible and that you can do it, but it somehow requires unseen elements before it can be achieved. In the a mindset of success believing is important, that is no secret, but it better applies to some of the steps that will bring to your destination of success.

A Success Mindset Achieves Success

Knowing that you will achieve your goal is a fact, it is a part of a success mindset that understands that there will be bumps in the road and that there will be times that you may be in doubt, but that is part of the journey to the success you have chosen. Knowing that it might not be easy is part of your mindset of success. However, you “know” that you will achieve your goal and be successful.

Know your goal, know your journey and know that you will achieve. Know that your success mindset will bring you to your destination of success, because you “Know” you will succeed.

There’s an old Hebrew proverb that says: “Using a dull axe requires great strength, so

There’s an old Hebrew proverb that says: “Using a dull axe requires great strength, so sharpen the blade. That’s the value of wisdom; it helps you succeed.”

One of the tools of your business are your systems. Systems are structural procedures and standards. Their objective is to guide your actions when it comes to routine tasks and similar recurring situations.

Are your business systems dull? Here’s a few ways to tell if you need to sharpen your systems for optimal success in 2010:

You don’t have any of your systems written down. If you don’t have anything written down, two things are going to happen. First, anyone who works with you besides yourself isn’t going to know how you want things to get done. Inevitably, everyone gets frustrated. Second, your business can only grow as much as you can keep everything in your head at one time. This effectively reduces your business to what you, and only you, can accomplish.

You’re haphazard at accomplishing routine tasks. Have a newsletter? Send it out on the same day every month (or whatever you’ve promised your contacts). Without fail. Keep your own books? Write all of your transactions down at the end of the day or the week. Without fail. Need to follow up with potential clients? Set a daily, attainable goal for yourself. And meet it. Without fail.

You find yourself spending frustrating amounts of time “putting out fires”. There will always be daily problems to solve when you’re a leader. But getting behind on the work of growing your business because you’re wrapped up in breakdowns indicates survival mode. There’s no way that you can accommodate growth beyond your current state if you aren’t able to peacefully live with what you’ve already built.

So, how do you sharpen the axe of your systems? Here’s a few ideas:

Write out a narrative for your systems. Take notes along the way as you accomplish routine tasks. Explain how you get things done; include the who, what, when, where, and why. Write it out as if you’re a complete stranger and you’re explaining it for the first time. As your business grows, this will serve as a template that you and others can refer to as a standard while doing business.

Plan ahead for routine tasks, and write down ideas along the way. If you need that newsletter to get out on the 1st, without fail, then you’re going to have to do some planning. When does the final draft need to be comfortably done? Rather than waiting until the last minute, write articles and other content along the way as they come to mind. Let yourself believe that this is also important work, because it ensures your future business growth. If you’re going to follow up with clients first thing in the morning, then spend a little time doing research or preparatory work the night before. Often, we don’t allow ourselves to pull away from the work that demands our attention today in order to do work that will be needed tomorrow. But the further ahead you can plan and begin to work on your goals, the more certain you’ll be of accomplishing them. Without fail.

Leverage human capital to clear some space for doing the work. Set up a free intern who can accomplish the routine and mundane things that are taking your time. Find someone whose interests are suited to getting all the stuff done you’ve been putting off. I promise you, anything you don’t know how to do, there’s a college student out there studying that exact field. They need experience – and if you’re specific enough in your requirements, chances are likely that they can get the job done just as well as a professional.

Set long-term goals and create steps for accomplishing them. This is the best way to get yourself out of survival mode and into the fresh air of growthful, visionary thinking. What do you want to have accomplished in 5 years? In 1 year? In 6 months? This time next month? Think about it in terms of accomplishments. That leads you to make tangible goals focused on getting things done. What you want to have done in 5 years will tell you what you need to have done by this time next month. Work backwards from a distant objective, and set intermittent goals by thinking of them as step-by-step plans to reaching your distant target.

And you’ll get there. That’s the beauty of wisdom. It works, no matter what age you find yourself in.

12:04 A.M.

Thursday, Home.

Christmas break is almost here and I’m glad. I’m so tired of school that I’ve been skipping out on homework and notes. I don’t want my grades to suffer, but I don’t want to do the work either. I just want to go home, and if anyone wants to see me than they can just make an effort to do so.

I think one of the main reasons for my sudden apathy is the lack of sleep. I’m back in that mode when I hate it, but the problem is that I don’t like to feel tired either. Ah, I just want to be awake. Why rest, why dream when you can do something more meaningful? For instance, make whatever good dreams you might receive come true. Isn’t that more important than rest? Yes. So if I could, I’d never sleep. But if I could, I’d never die either.

There’s so much to think about and yet no words to give them. I’ve forgotten the point that I wanted to make here, it had something to do with my exterior and interior. Here’s a line that I came up with to bring it across:

“…Isolation is my brother, and you can’t detach yourself from family. You can try, and accomplish it physically, but emotionally they will always be there…”

I thought of this because no matter how much I care for someone I always feel isolated. Why? I’ll tell you later. .

Changing the subject…

Today, or rather, yesterday (December 16), was a decent one. That is, if you can get past the obsession that is caused by ignorance. My friend is really upsetting me lately, but she’s so full of herself that she can’t take the hint. What is it with girls and boys? Girls forget all about their friends once they get a boyfriend. It’s like suddenly your number two or not even a number. It’s annoying, highly annoying, and I’m getting sick of it. I don’t think I’ve ever known a girl who’s remembered her friends over her boyfriend. Is this bad that I say this? I think not. Love is love, no matter what form. So by taking up your so called “love” you go and destroy the other. Real cool. Real flippin’ cool…

And as blunt as I try to be I can’t tell these girls to get over themselves. Especially this particular one. I want to tell her to shut up and get over it, because honestly she set herself up for failure. Maybe if she realized this she would stop talking about her “love” and remember that her so called “best friend” is there. Why yes… I’d like to go to the movies.

…finally you remember me. After you broke up! Glad I’m the first step. You only need me when you’re down or on your way down. But it’s OK, because I know that this isn’t a friendship that will last for a long time.

I don’t care.

And that suddenly reminded me of the point I wanted to make… but now I don’t feel like it. Maybe later?

Brother isolation.
Somehow that’s comforting,
but terrifying at the same time…

P.S.
Sorry I haven’t written in a few days. I don’t know why I haven’t but I just haven’t.

P.P.S. - Passing thought.
I think love is beautiful, all three sides of it. Even though I only know two of the three sides.

Three sides, three words,
I love you.

12:34 A.M.

Welcome to the seventh in my series of 10 blog posts. Stick with me for all 10 steps, and you’

Welcome to the seventh in my series of 10 blog posts. Stick with me for all 10 steps, and you’ll be armed with all of the information you need to get out there and purchase a home.

Step 7: Make an Offer

So you’ve found your dream home and you’ve found a way to pay for it. Now what? Do you walk up to the seller with a check, tell him to wrap it up, and leave with your bright, shiny new house? Unfortunately, no, it’s not that easy. There is a process to follow. A good Realtor can guide you through it and make sure you understand what you’re doing.

Real estate contracts have a good deal of legalese involved with them. In the state of Tennessee, the standard real estate contract is 9 pages long. Not only does it name the price to be paid, but it outlines the terms out the deal. It provides deadlines for financing and inspections as well as contingencies that allow the buyer to back out of the deal if certain conditions are met (for example, the house is about to fall down.)

How much should I offer? Well, that depends on a myriad of factors. What is the condition of the house? What are similar homes in that neighborhood selling for? What is the seller’s situation. How much can you afford? The list goes on. That’s why it’s important to have a Realtor. He or she can counsel you on the market statistics, find out about the seller’s situation, and consult with you to develop the best strategy for getting you the most home for the least money.

To make an offer, you simply go out and find the house you want and then draw up the contract with your Realtor. They should go through it with you step by step and make sure you understand EVERYTHING. This is a very important document. You have to understand that by submitting the offer, you are legally binding yourself to purchase that property should the seller accept your offer. Along with the offer, you would typically send a check for a somewhat significant amount of money to show your willingness to purchase the home. This check will be applied to the purchase of the home. If you were unwilling to carry out the terms outline in it, you would be in default; meaning you’d probably lose that earnest money and you may even be sued!

The contract also sets up timelines for when things have to be accomplished such as loan applications and inspections. The closing date will also be specified in the contract. You’ve got to be on top of these deadlines, because failure to meet them will again result in default. We don’t want you losing your money and the house! Don’t fret, however, because a good Realtor won’t let that happen.

The next important step in this series involves you protecting your investment. Stay tuned for Step 8:Get Insurance.

Before you start preparing for NTSE, you must have a good idea about the pattern of exam and syllabus that comes in NTSE. You must know about the subjects covered in each test; number of questions asked, time provided for tests, qualifying marks for next level etc. All these questions are answered in the previous article Click Here to find.

There are always questions going on in your mind about how you should prepare for NTSE. You are always looking for recommended books, study material and practice tests.

Although there is no set syllabus for NTSE, the questions are based on the level of Class 7th and 8th. A student in class 8th, appearing for NTSE, must brush up his knowledge on Science, Social Science and Mathematics. It has been found that the questions asked in NTSE are more or less based on NCERT books. There are a few websites like www.TCYonline.com that provide study material for NTSE preparation. Free Mock NTSE and Topic Wise Tests are available on the website. A student can also check his national ranking from TCY Analytics.

Food Journal – No

Good morning Mintdom,

I had a GREAT step day yesterday! I had a hard time keeping up with myself, hence the lack of a Food Journal. I think I need to start over with the food journal and go back to just writing down on paper what I eat and not worry about points or calories. Maybe that way, I will get into the habit. I will try that today along with my 30 minutes of intentional exercise.

“If you’re going through hell, keep going.” –Winston Churchill

While I am not going through hell in any way, shape, or form, (unless you count passing up Christmas treats as hell LOL) I am a bit frustrated with my lack of results. I like this quote because no matter what, I just need to keep trying. I need to stick with the basics while looking for new options. This quote reminded me of a Rodney Atkins song. Click on the link to listen to it. I am doing my first 10 minutes to this song.

Warning: This type of song sticks in your head; you might end up singing it all day! LOL!!

In my last blog entry, I wrote about how I felt that much of project management is instinctive. Toda

In my last blog entry, I wrote about how I felt that much of project management is instinctive. Today I wanted to touch on the structured and less instinctive side of project management. In today’s competitive market place, every organization needs an edge. Following a disciplined approach to project management will help provide that edge. The PMBOKtm Guide provides certain knowledge areas that project managers can follow and I have listed them below.

Initiate

Is there a problem, opportunity, or challenge for the organization?

Do a feasibility study to gain worth of the project, or ROI.

When validated, have top management in the organization sign off on the project – this is the Charter, which formalizes the project and contains a rough draft of the project scope. In addition, the Charter should contain:

i. Purpose, constraints, assumptions

ii. Goals & Objectives

iii. The organizational structure & culture

iv. Organizational assets to be utilized

v. The statement of work

Select a Project Manager – someone known for his/her leadership and communication skills, rather than technical skills. Though, having both helps.

Identify stakeholders with a rough idea of their roles.

Planning

Obtain alignment and buy in on deliverables of the project from as many of the stakeholders as possible.

Define project requirements, constraints, and assumptions.

Identify project team with their roles and responsibilities.

Refine the scope statement.

Create the Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) using the scope management plan.

Create the WBS Dictionary, with specifics on: resources, schedule, cost, etc.

Create the activities list from the WBS work package.

Create an activities schedule via a Project Network Diagram (PND).

Create an estimate of the project resources.

Create a project schedule.

Refine and complete the PND with time estimates for each activity.

Create quality management plan – both, QC & QA.

Create communication management plan.

Create risk management plan.

i. Identify risk

ii. Perform qualitative & quantitative analysis

iii. Risk response plan

Create procurement plan

Create change management plan.

Obtain management approval and conduct a kick off meeting.

Execution.

Execute tasks and activities defined in the project plan.

Map results of those activities to a QA program.

Continually develop the project team.

Disperse project information – progress, changes, additions, etc.

Manage resources.

Improve team’s performance.

Monitor & Control

Measure project’s performance to plan.

Manage integrated change control to meet deliverables.

Provide scope verification.

Assert control over schedule, cost, quality, and risk.

Develop performance reports for each control activity.

Close

Obtain final acceptance from customers.

Obtain financial, legal, and administrative closure.

Release project resources.

Perform and document lessons learned.

Distribute final project report.

Archive project records.

Measure customer satisfaction.

Note that not every project will necessarily incorporate all these steps, but if a project manager is working on a large project (high budget, many resources, over many months), then its preferable to employ as many of these steps as possible to ensure better control and monitoring of the project’s final deliverables.
