There’s something I dread when I watch comedies, and it’s even more prevalent in certain black comedies where they are played seriously, dead-pan. I like to term it “Sympathetic Viewer Awkwardness”, which happens both when the character feels awkward, but much more commonly, when we feel awkward for the character.

Take for instance the American version of The Office, starring Steve Carell as Michael Scott, the boss at a small office where they sell paper. Michael will not miss an opportunity to be rude, racist, sexist, and offensive. His staff obviously pays him no mind, and don’t take him seriously. I do remember the scene where he asked every person in the office to talk as if they were someone from another “group”, and he drew the “Indian” card (India, not Native American), and then Kelly, the Indian worker, had walked in and had slapped him, since she thought he were mocking her.

The thing is, watching The Office is almost a physically painful experience for me, as I can’t help but go, “Oh gawd, he didn’t just do that, did he? He did!” and of course the show actually plays and gives social commentary, by showing you these ridiculously offensive things, and having a character who truly means well, he just really doesn’t know any better. If you watch the show with people who think Michael’s behaviour is legitimate, BTW, know that you are not in Kansas anymore ;)

In American Pie 2 there’s a scene where Jim takes a special ed kid’s trumpet (I think he was autistic, but it’s been nearly a decade since I’ve last watched the movie), and walks towards Michelle (Alyson Hannigan’s character) in a public show, trumpeting, with a complete lack of ability on the trumpet. The thing is, the scene went on and on, with him sounding so bad, and looking so stupid, that I literally half-covered my eyes while it all went on.

Likewise, in last week’s episode of The Big Bang Theory, where Howard first proposes to Bernadette in the middle of the Cheese Factory, and then goes and performs a number on stage there. I watched it on my own, so I actually stopped the video for a bit.

So what is this “Sympathetic Viewer Awkwardness”? It’s when the characters are acting so outrageously bad, that you feel ashamed, you feel ashamed for them, you feel the shame you would have felt in their place, you feel the shame you’d have felt if you were in public with them and related to them. You feel awkward, because it’s something you can’t stomach, and you care for the characters, and you feel the pain, the shame, of their actions, even as far removed as only seeing them happen on TV.

It makes watching comedies somewhat painful, but I brave it. It may show that I identify too strongly with characters, but who knows.

P.S. I’m sorry last week had no updates, I actually meant to write an entry several times, but something always came up.

Congrats, Jim and Pam. And congrats to NBC’s The Office for pulling off a hallmark sentimental episo

Congrats, Jim and Pam.

And congrats to NBC’s The Office for pulling off a hallmark sentimental episode without losing a sliver of edginess or those trademark awkward moments.

The show, an Americanized version of a British series of the same name, is in the midst of its 6th season. The series has evolved, and characters have come and gone since its inception; but the heart of this primetime sitcom remains. Dry, witty and awesomely uncomfortable, the mockumentary style show has risen from cult classic to international smash hit.

And perhaps at the height of the show’s popularity, the marriage of two of the main characters, Jim and Pam, was the perfect excuse to pull out all the stops for an hour-long event. This potential ratings monster strikes a chord with longtime sentimental fans – while minding the low-brow comedy quota of males ages 18-34.

Some may fear an uncharacteristically emotional episode as Pam and Jim open by asking their co-workers to make certain ‘adjustments’ due to Pam’s pregnancy. However, Dwight’s refusal to eat his hard-boiled egg away from his desk leads to an office-wide puke rally, assuring viewers that success has not diminished the show’s willingness to be downright juvenile.

While the primary characters are typically showcased, this platform presents an opportunity to let many of the auxiliary characters offer their own pieces to the story. The trip from Scranton (where most of the characters work and live) to the wedding in Niagara is presented beautifully. The viewer travels from car to car seeing everything from a heartfelt conversation between the bride and groom, to the ridiculously immature scheming of Michael Scott and Dwight Schrute – and everything in between.

A majority of the episode takes place outside the customary setting of the Scranton branch of Dunder Mifflin. However, this cast of characters can make any situation awkward – regardless of location. Never is this more evident than during Michael’s wonderfully inappropriate toast – before it is mercifully terminated by Jim. And just as you start to think you may be watching a real dramatic series, reality hits you where it counts, and hilarity ensues.

But this ‘documentation’ of a genuine romance has its share of truly emotional moments. Not since Monica and Chandler in Friends (also an NBC hit) has the union of two fictional characters seemed so important. As out of place as this romance is amidst an outrageous array of personalities, the writers present a believable climax to a love story six years in the making.

Barely-believable fringe characters, outrageously awkward situations and delightfully witty dialogue have made The Office one of the most unique and successful “spin-offs” in television history. While childish toilet humor and lines like “That’s what she said” have inspired much of its success, a connection to show’s characters is a primary reason for viewers to tune-in on a weekly basis. The writers took both sides into account when making this episode. The balance between simple sarcastic humor and an authentic attachment to the characters has gotten the show to where it is – and suggests that this wildly successful series has no plans of slowing down anytime soon.

1. “Date Night” is a comedy featuring Tina Fey (“30 Rock”) and Steve Carell

1. “Date Night” is a comedy featuring Tina Fey (“30 Rock”) and Steve Carell (“The Office”). They try to revive their marriage by going out on a date. Hilarity ensues after they are mistaken for another married couple who owe people money. If, like me, the comedic veterans aren’t enough to convince you to watch the movie, “Date Night” also stars rapper Common, Mila Kunis (“That ‘7os Show”), Mark Wahlberg (“Four Brothers”) and James Franco (“Pineapple Express”).

2. “Did You Hear About the Morgans?” also centers on a marriage on the rocks and a married couple on the run. This time around, though, Hugh Grant (“Notting Hill”) and Sarah Jessica Parker (“Sex and City”) are placed in the witness protection program after seeing a murder. I’ve seen this trailer in theaters several times and every time, someone reacts to the last part of the trailer. Indeed, the laughs start once they relocate to Wyoming …

3. “Kick Ass” follows newcomer Aaron Johnson as he decides to become a superhero even though he has no powers. The tone of the film is similar to the humor in several Owen Wilson movies, such as “The Darjeeling Limited.” Christopher Mintz-Plasse, of “Superbad” fame, also stars. Johnson can also be seen in the John Lennon-film, “Nowhere Boy.” Its trailer is over here.

4. Acclaimed actor James McAvoy can next be seen in “The Last Station,” which focuses on the life of famed author Leo Tolstoy (Christopher Plummer). The trailer doesn’t reveal much else, but the film does have a 7.3 star rating on IMDb.com. The film’s early release is supposedly a ploy to secure Plummer an Oscar nomination in next year’s weak Best Actor race. McAvoy’s real-life wife, Anne Marie Duff, as well as Oscar favorites Helen Mirren and Paul Giamatti co-star.

5. Focus Features is set to release “Babies,” a documentary which chronicles one year in the lives of different newborns around the world, namely Tokyo, San Francisco, Mongolia and Namibia.

Edward Norton, Adam Sandler, Ben Stiller, Robert Pattinson, Vanessa Hudgens, “Toy Story 3,” romantic comedies (Amy Adams! Nicholas Sparks!), potential Oscar nominees (George Clooney! Emily Blunt!) and more after the jump.

6. Hollywood takes another stab at “Beauty and the Beast” with the adaptation of Alex Flinn’s novel, “Beastly.” The teaser trailer is so abrupt that I’m not excited to see it in theaters. Relative unknown Alex Pettyfer and Vanessa Hudgens (“High School Musical”) star.

7. “Season of the Witch” reteams Nicolas Cage with “Gone in 60 Seconds” director, Dominic Sena. This heart-pounding action movie takes us with a band of knights who are tasked with moving a powerful witch to a monastery. Ron Perlman from “Hellboy” co-stars.

8. Amanda Seyfried (“Mamma Mia”) sure knows how to pick movies — at least, chick flicks that I want to see. First, there was Nicholas Sparks’s “Dear John.” Now, there’s “Letters to Juliet.” Seyfried stars as a girl who’s engaged to Gael Garcia Bernal (“Science of Sleep”) but goes on an adventure with Christopher Egan (“Eragon”) and Vanessa Redgrave after she finds Redgrave’s letter to a long lost love.

IMDb.com states that Hugh Dancy was originally cast in Bernal’s role but dropped out, which is a shame. Anyone who’s seen him in “The Jane Austen Book Club” knows that Dancy would have been perfect in this movie albeit in Egan’s role. Oh, well. Cue Taylor Swift’s “Love Story.”

9. Noah Baumbach (“The Squid and the Whale”) once again gifts us with his zing-damn-oh snap (!) dialogue in “Greenberg.” Ben Stiller tries his hand at drama as a man in a mid-life crisis. Jennifer Jason Leigh (“Single White Female”) and Rhys Ifans (to be seen in “Harry Potter 7″) round out the cast.

10. “Crazy Heart” is another film with an earlier-than-scheduled release date. Again, the movie studio is trying to nab its star, Jeff Bridges, a Best Actor nod. Bridges (“Iron Man”) stars as a country music star who’s down on his luck until his path crosses with a journalist (Maggie Gyllenhaal).

11. According to IMDb.com, “Remember Me” is up by 658 percent in popularity this week. The most probable reason? Robert Pattinson (“Twilight”) is the star. He is joined by Pierce Brosnan (“James Bond”), Chris Cooper (“The Kingdom”) and Emilie de Ravin (“Lost”).

12. In “Leaves of Grass,” Edward Norton plays twin brothers who plot to kill their small town’s drug lord. The supporting cast includes Susan Sarandon (“Stepmom”) and Keri Russell (“August Rush”).

13. “Extraordinary Measures” is based on the true story of John and Aileen Crowley who race to find a cure for their dying child. Brendan Fraser (“The Mummy”), Russell (“Felicity”) and Harrison Ford (“Indiana Jones”) star.

14. “In Ireland, women can propose to men on the 29th of February.” This is the premise of “Leap Year,” in which Amy Adams (“Enchanted”) takes it upon herself to propose to her longtime boyfriend. Fate intervenes when she lands in Wales instead and runs into Matthew Goode (“Chasing Liberty”).

15. In “Grown Ups,” five childhood friends reunite after 30 years. The movie’s cast is a who’s who of comedy, namely David Spade (“The Benchwarmers”), Chris Rock (“Down to Earth”), Adam Sandler (“Spanglish”), Kevin James (“Hitch”), Rob Schneider (“Hot Chick”), Maya Rudolph (“Away We Go”), Salma Hayek (“Frida”) and Maria Bello (“Coyote Ugly”).

16. After failing to impress the girl of his dreams, Michael Cera (“Superbad”) decides to rebel in the comedy, “Youth in Revolt.” Justin Long (“Accepted”) and Zach Galifianakis (“The Hangover”) also star in the movie. Trailer no.1 and trailer no. 2 follow:

17. Soon there won’t be another Sparks’s novel to film, and the world as we know it will come to an end. “The Last Song” is Hollywood’s latest try at the author’s romantic novels. Miley Cyrus (“Hannah Montana”) stars as a rebellious teenager who, along with her younger brother, is sent to spend the summer with her estranged dad. Cyrus, also a musical prodigy, falls in love and makes amends with her father.

I guess that means two things. 1) We can look forward to Cyrus-filled soundtrack. 2) Supposedly, the studio thought Mandy Moore in two Sparks’s adaptations would have been too much. Nonetheless, Greg Kinnear (“Little Miss Sunshine”) and Kelly Preston (“Jerry Maguire”) lend the movie some credibility.

18. Maybe you’ve heard of James Cameron’s (“Titanic”) latest venture, “Avatar.” An adventure in another world and another time pits human soldiers against an entirely new species. Sam Worthington (“Terminator: Salvation”), Sigourney Weaver (“Alien”), Zoe Saldana (“Star Trek”) and Michelle Rodriguez (“Girl Fight”) star.

19. It’s just a teaser trailer, but “Clash of the Titans” looks pretty amazing. Whoever created the score is some kind of genius. Liam Neeson (Batman Begins”), Ralph Fiennes (“Harry Potter”) and Worthington are all part of the remake.

20. Catch the “Toy Story 3″ teaser and full trailers below:

21. Emily Blunt is “The Young Victoria.” From the looks of the trailer, Blunt (“The Devil Wears Prada”) will give another powerhouse performance as Queen Victoria. She is paired with Rupert Friend (“Pride and Prejudice”) as her Prince Albert. The ensemble cast includes Paul Bettany (“The Da Vinci Code”) and Jim Broadbent (“The Chronicles of Narnia”).

22. Clooney may have cinched another Oscar nomination with his performance in “Up in the Air.” In fact, director Jason Reitman (“Juno”), actresses Anna Kendrick (“Twilight”) and Vera Farmiga (“The Departed”) all have Oscar buzz surrounding them. Clooney is the guy that companies hire to travel all over the globe and fire people for them.

The film was originally meant to be a satire like Reitman’s “Thank You for Not Smoking,” but the recession called for a revamping of the movie. The first trailer below tells you more about the story, but the second trailer is by far the better one. Fasten your seatbelts …

Personally, I’m looking forward to “Up in the Air,” “The Young Victoria,” “Leap Year” and “Letters to Juliet” although I’d probably watch some, such as “Avatar” and “Did You Hear About the Morgans?” if my friends want to see them. What about you? Sound off in the comments!

Okay, so all this mishigas about Miley Cyrus coming into Pop Burger and a worker there not knowing w

Okay, so all this mishigas about Miley Cyrus coming into Pop Burger and a worker there not knowing who she was has gone way too far! it is so ridiculous. Pop Burger has been bombarded from the media wanting to know what happened that day and why the Pop Burger employee didnt recognize Miley. Also, this story has been exaggerated! The story Perez Hilton and other blogs/gossip sites tell is not very accurate. I know what really happened because I work at Pop Burger!

It was a Saturday when Miley and a friend came into Pop Burger in Midtown and order some food. My co-worker who took her order, asked her name to put on the order and Miley was surprised she didnt recognize her and felt offended I assume. Now, according to the media, my co-worker told Miley: “That’s nice for you. Here is your order. Have a good day.” That is a complete LIE! I don’t know why everybody is making such a big deal over NOTHING. My co-worker simply doesn’t care enough about Miley Cyrus to recognize her. Who does anyway? At Pop Burger, we have had much bigger celebrities come in, and one time I even asked Steve Carell his name for the order and he didn’t seem offended. It’s not that I didn’t recognize him, but I just did not remember his name at that exact moment, I guess I was just excited that I was taking Steve Carell’s order.

Today, I answered the phone and they said they were calling from a radio show from freaking Australia. I was asked if we wanted to apologize for us not knowing who Miley Cyrus was, and they also asked me if Miley tipped, etc. I of course told them that there is no reason for anyone to apologize to Miley, and that she did NOT tip. So there you go.

I know understand Celebrities when they say that the media makes up so many lies. It’s ridiculous, but at the end of the day, Pop Burger has gotten so much publicity. This story has been on Perezhilton.com, The Post, Entertainment Tonight, USWeekly, some radio show in Australia apparently, and others.

Pop Burger has celebrity guests because it’s a hot spot in New York City, and also the food is delicious! Celebrities I have seen more recently are: Cedric the Entertainer, Tony Hawk, Steve Carell, and Nina Garcia. All very nice people! I actually have blogged about a couple of them here in my blog about their visits at Pop Burger.

Oh, and my friendly co-worker who took Miley’s order, is available for interviews!

“Murder”

November 12th, 2009

The best thing about The Office is that its silliest episodes can sometimes be its most effective. An episode like “Cafe Disco” last season was the perfect way to break through the tension of the Michael Scott Paper Company period, devolving into a dance party that helped to bring everyone back together albeit through a less than serious structure. While the show can go off the rails if things become too silly, there is something very honest about situations where the silliness is the result of a human response to a crisis, or to a period of tension. Michael Scott is not the only person in the world who doesn’t like tense situations, although he may be the only one who decides to turn his office into a dance party or, as we see in “Murder,” the scene of a vicious murder.

What makes the episode work is that it continues a couple of ongoing character trends (Jim slowly turning into Michael, Andy’s interest in Erin) in an episode that otherwise devolves into the office’s crazier characters overacting their way through a murder mystery in a box while the rest of the characters contemplate some major financial restructuring. It’s a good introduction to what seems like the next major arc for the series, and I think it’s an effective piece of television comedy in the process.

I want to start off by acknowledging that anybody not charmed by Ed Helms in this episode is simply immune to charm. Andy in a relationship with Angela was ultimately a mistake because she is insufferable and he is earnest, to the point where the relationship was destructive to a character that I genuinely like (Dwight and Angela worked because Dwight suffering has always felt more logical, and the two “deserved” each other to some degree). But now that the show is sweeter on Andy, albeit not afraid to make him creepy (See: touching Pam’s stomach), it makes more sense for him to go after someone like Erin in a way that is sort of allowing the show to pretend like we saw the first days of Jim and Pam’s flirtations, except with both characters being a bit more off kilter. I also like that the episode does give us both sides of the relationship, as we see Andy’s anxiety for most of the episode before revealing that we could have just as easily seen Erin’s anxiety throughout. Ellie Kemper broke my heart in the scene where she tells us she thought it was a real date, and that’s stunning for an episode that had characters talking in terrible southern accents for most of its run time.

Similarly, despite the overall zaniness, I thought that the Jim and Michael side of this story hit home pretty well. While this isn’t quite “Tube City,” it is an example of Michael going for the fun over the practical, although Jim once again sees that there is some logic to his argument. He argues that it was a good day for there to be two managers, and I think the episode only worked because of it. Part of what frustrates Jim about Michael is how selfish some of his ideas are, and there was a moment here where (when defending the murder mystery) Michael became overly emotional and more or less admitted that it is more he than the office who needs this. It’s why he falls further into the delusion when David Wallace does eventually call (although, to Michael’s credit, he did call him in the first place), and it’s why Jim eventually withholds the information regarding the company’s insolvency. He knows that the office wouldn’t be able to take that sort of news, and that the game (for all of its silliness) might be the only way to get through this day. Some have argued that this storyline is the show preparing for Steve Carell’s exit from the series, letting Jim learn from Michael’s successes and failures, and while I don’t think Carell will leave the show so soon (his movie career hasn’t suffered due to being busy on the show, it’s suffered due to bad movies) I do think that it’s really getting the most out of the dual-manager system.

Otherwise, I thought this one was a lot of fun if not a lot of substance. I’ve done these murder mysteries before, and it is only really fun when everyone gets involved, so seeing montages like Dwight accusing everyone before eventually deciding it’s Phyllis (which is right) because she is who he is most medium suspects is just plain funny. I also liked seeing how Pam, who Jenna Fischer did a great job turning into a cranky opponent of Michael in the past few episodes, transitioned back into a supportive role, playing along before anyone else and then quite wonderfully becoming part of the double agent gun fight in the episode’s coda. I thought the episode did a great job of breaking down the bigger pieces of news with humour, like Oscar being forced to use a terrible southern belle accent to try to explain cash flow problems – it never seemed like it was reducing the importance of those emails and the reality of Dunder Mifflin’s financial scenario, but it also never got bogged down by them either.

As for those problems, we’ll see where they go from there: the show has not been avoiding the recession, as branches have been closed and jobs have been lost, but for the entire company to be in this position is something that raises a lot more questions. We know that Scranton as a branch has been performing well, but having two managers seems frivolous and this certainly does place Michael’s job (as a potentially unnecessary bureaucracy) in jeopardy. This was a good way to ease into the storyline with a bit of humour, so I’m pleased to wait and see what the show has to offer from here on out.

Cultural Observations

In an ideal world, Dwight would have had some emotional component in this one, because Rainn Wilson was pretty great throughout: I particularly enjoyed the cold open, which is a very simple joke (Dwight attacking Dwight) that was just played really well.

I am enjoying the fact that Ryan’s weird fashion choices has become an unspoken joke for the show and all, but isn’t it about time we bumped him from the credits? I don’t dislike B.J. Novak or anything, but it’s getting obnoxious.

I thought that Creed’s late arrival, and his quick exit when he thinks he was really under suspicion of murder, was almost too rote a Creed joke: I knew how it would go as soon as he drew up, and not necessarily in a good way.

Oh Tina Fey, how I love her character. Likely she’s going to receive even more backlash for playing that same character again, but that’s her shtick. I’m really looking forward to this movie. It’ll be like Thursday night on NBC, except I’ll be paying money. Honestly though, this movie does look very funny. These two are hilarious and I look forward to watching them play off each other. It looks like they have no chemistry, but I think that’s going to make everything a lot more fun.

And look at the rest of the cast. (BTW, I’ve put the actors and actresses that I like in the tags section, that way I don’t have to mention them every time.)
