Here is the new trailer for the Percy Jackson film. It is based on a series of kids books by Rick Riordan. My son loves them and I’ve read the first one. It is a good kids book, but does follow the Harry Potter template to some extent. It is also a tad predictable, but that is probably down to age and having read many other books.

However, there are more monsters, Gods and smiting in the Percy Jackson books. Kids dig that. I suppose you could also compare it to a modern day Clash of the Titans.

This new trailer gives you a better idea of what the story is about, plus it shows some of the creatures including Uma Thurman as Medusa (apparantly iPhones have superceded shiny shields!). The trailer also shows Pierce Brosnan as Chiron, Rosario Dawson as Persephone and Logan Lerman as Percy. However, the film also features Kevin McKidd, Sean Bean, Steve Coogan, Joe Pantoliano and Catherine Keener so there are plenty of talented actors involved.

20th Century Fox has released this new international trailer for the Chris Columbus directed fantasy adventure, Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief.

The movie is set in the 21st century but sees the gods and monsters of Greek mythology come to life, emerging from the pages of Percy Jackson’s school books. Percy then discovers that he is the demigod son of the Greek god, Poseidon, and embarks on a journey across modern-day America with his friends Annabeth, also a demigod, and Grover, a satyr, to save his mother, return Zeus’ stolen lightning bolt, and prevent a war between the gods.

The movie stars Logan Lerman, Brandon T. Jackson, Alexandra Daddario, Sean Bean, Pierce Brosnan, Steve Coogan, Rosario Dawson, Catherine Keener, Kevin McKidd, Joe Pantoliano, Uma Thurman and Ray Winstone, who all add their weight on the acting front. Quite the heady cast there you have to admit. Chris Columbus is good with children’s movie having directed the first two Home Alone and Harry Potter movies.

The trailer looks good, and as a fan of Greek (well really all) mythology I’ll be watching when the movie is released February 12th, 2010.

I am very unsure about this movie.  When I first watched the teaser I had a lot of hope.  It looked like a Harry Potter knock-off with Greek mythological characters instead of witches and wizards.  Sounds good, right?  Then I read the book.

Whew, the book is truly awful.  Granted it wasn’t written for adults, but technically neither was Harry Potter.  Honestly though, this book is terrible no matter how young you are.  I now have no intention of reading more of the books.

After I read the book I watched the teaser again and discovered that despite the terrible book the movie might still hold some promise.  Then they released this trailer.  Now I’m back on the ban wagon.  As long as the director and the screen-writers really change the story then this could be a good movie.  So this isn’t a full endorsement, I am not behind this movie, but I will say that it looks significantly better than the book.

Watched a nice movie, lies and alibis, starring  Rebecca Romijn,  Steve Coogan, Selma Blair, Sam Elliott, James Brolin and James Marsden. Quite a good thriller and a comedy , I should say.

Owen Wilson has decided to go from acting opposite a dog in Marley & Me to actually being a dog. He has joined the live-action/CG movie Marmaduke, and will voice the rascally Great Dane in Fox’s adaptation of the long-running comic strip. I put my head in my hands in despair. This does not bode well.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the story follows a family named the Winslows who move from Kansas to Orange County with their dog Marmaduke, a slobbery pooch who creates chaos wherever he goes.

In adapting the strip created in 1954 by Brad Anderson and Phil Leeming, the script by Tim Rasmussen and Vince Di Meglio sees Marmaduke navigate a volatile Mutts vs. Pedigrees turf war, woo the purebred of his dreams and overcome a fall from grace.

Judy Greer, Lee Pace and William H. Macy play the humans, while Fergie, Emma Stone, George Lopez, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Steve Coogan, Damon Wayans, Marlon Wayans supply the voices.

Whoa. Hold up. The Wayans brothers are in it so my misgivings were misplaced. This is bound to be comedy gold! –disengage sarcasm

Tom Dey is directing, and John Davis is producing the family comedy, which has a June 2010 release date.

Wedding Crashers star Owen Wilson has been cast to voice the cartoon strip dog Marmaduke for a feature length film. The film will be about The Winslows who move Kansas to Orange County with their Great Dane Marmaduke who causes chaos everywhere he goes.

Brincadeirinha, mas depois do que eu vi a minha idéia era essa. O filme tem tudo pra ser fantástico, elenco, dinheiro, marketing viral, trailers, história…em resumo tudo. E mesmo assim consegue não ser um grande clássico como prometia.

Não vou chegar a dizer que o filme é ruim, porque ele não é. Ele tem seus defeitos mas não é ruim, só que com o material que veio antes do filme e com este elenco vc espera um poquinho mais e acho que eu fui ao cinema esperando demais por este filme, qnd vi me decepcionei.

O filme tem seus momentos e consegue ser engraçado em algumas partes “I´m a lead farmer motherfucker!!!”, “I don´t read the script, the script reads me.”, Tom careca e gordo, Matthew McConaughey como agente, os trailers do começo e mais algumas coisinhas fazem valer a pena.

Mas acho q o filme fica muito forçado as vezes, (o Sr. Black tbm) claro que com o público jovem de hoje em dia é só colocar sangue, explosão e piadas de peido que faz sucesso mas na minha opinião o filme poderia ter sido muito melhor e até ter se tornado um clássico.

Não achei ele ruim, só fiquei decepcionado que com esse nível de elenco e dinheiro certas pessoas não tiveram a competência de fazer um filme nota 10. Hellboy 2 foi mais engraçado, bem mais!!!

I know Wind in the Willows like the back of my hand from watching the TV show as a child, and later watching the Monty Python version with Steve Coogan as Mole. I wasn’t sure if I had ever read the book as a child, but as I was reading it, it became clear that I hadn’t. I find this quite disappointing, as I loved the stories as a child, and I always knew they were from a book, but I never read it.
 
The book is set out where each chapter unfolds a new tale. Some chapters are apart from the main story, but all create a lovely image of the animals’ riverbank. Maybe one or two parts of the stories bored me a little, but overall I enjoyed reading it.  The TV show and film obviously helped the characters come alive as I was reading it, but even if they hadn’t, the different personalities of each of the animals jump out at you. The techniques used by the author to tell the tale are powerful. You feel as annoyed at Toad as Ratty is, you feel the homesickness that Mole feels, and you feel the lasting friendship between the four as strong as they do.
 
It’s a lovely little children’s book, with a TV tie in and movie that only help to accentuate your enjoyment, not hinder it.

This is the Smithsonian! This is the big leagues!

I reviewed the first Night of the Museum and I liked the movie very much. A kid friendly movie teaches about semblances of history in a clever way. We fast-forward to 2009 with the release of Night of the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian, the magic of the first film is there, but you have to dig to find it. That’s not a good sign. I’m glad I went to the cheap theater to see this movie.

After his stint as the night watchmen of the Museum of Natural History, Larry Daley (Ben Stiller) is inexplicably the CEO of his own company, Daley Devices. He left the inhabitants of the museum behind to invent the glow in the dark flashlight.

He goes back to the museum – no reason why – to see that the place is closed for renovations. Most of the exhibit pieces are in boxes en route to the Smithsonian federal archive. Dr. McPhee (Ricky Gervais) tells Larry that the people are not coming to the museum. They want to have new attractions. Larry wants to find a way to have the museum open again.

En route to the Smithsonian, the capuchin monkey, Dexter steals the Table of Ahkmenrah to their new home in the basement. Larry turns into 007 to break into the restricted area. He awakens the inhabitants of the museum like General Custer (Bill Hader) and Amelia Earheart (Amy Adams).

Amelia becomes Larry cohort to help stop Ahkmenrah’s (Rami Malek) older brother, Kahmunrah (Hank Azaria) from resurrect the undead army to take over the world with Ivan the Terrible (Christopher Guest), Napoleon Bonaparte (Alain Chabat) and Al Capone (Jon Bernthal) on his side.

I was still swept up with the fantastical moments of the movie. Bill Hader, Amy Adams and Mizuo Peck who plays Sacajawea were fantastic in the movie. They were the only enjoyable parts to the movie.

Many elements bothered me, especially the accent of Kahumunrah, the chase scenes in the paintings did nothing for me, and the whole thing with the villains was awful. It can’t say too much without spoiling the movie.

Judgment: A nice movie, but the first movie is much better.

Así es como muchos se han atrevido a bautizar a la serie de novelas fantásticas dirigidas al público juvenil y escritas por Rick Riordan que tienen por título “Percy Jackson y los dioses del Olimpo”. La serie parece constar de cinco libros cuyos subtítulos son “The lightning thief”, “The sea of monsters”, “The Titan’s curse”, “The battle of the Labyrunth” y “The last olympian”.

Todo ello viene a colación por el tráiler que ha salido para promocionar la primera de las películas que en español llevará como título: “Percy Jackson y los dioses del Olimpo: El ladrón del rayo”. No verá la luz hasta febrero de 2010 pero mucho se está hablando de ella ya que cuenta entre su reparto con grandes estrellas del celuloide como Pierce Brosnan, Uma Thurman, Sean Bean, Kevin McKidd, Catherine Keener, Rosario Dawson, Steve Coogan, Brandon T. Jackson o Logan Lerman. Además la cinta está dirigida por Chris Columbus que recordareis por llevar al final la adaptación de “Harry Potter y la piedra filosofal” y “Harry Potter y la cámara secreta”.

Pero como sinopsis oficial decir que esta adaptación se basada en la mitología griega, y exactamente en los dioses del Olimpo. La trama de esta primera película gira en torno a un chico que descubre ser el hijo del rey Poseidón, y que a partir de ese hallazgo tendrá grandes misiones que hacer como rescatar a su padre o recuperar el rayo de Zeus. Una trama no demasiado original pero si interesante, que veremos cómo han plasmado en el cine.

No he tenido la oportunidad de leerme los libros, pero me ha sorprendido gratamente enterarme de esta nueva franquicia de novelas. Como amante de la mitología y del género fantástico creo que han dado en el claro cómo hacerme llegar una buena historia. No sé si será la sucesora de Harry Potter, algo bastante difícil de conseguir, pero se ha rodeando de grandes lo cual no asegura totalmente el éxito de la cinta. Tendremos que esperar a verla, pero yo le auguraría un enorme éxito.
