Tonight the Tuskers started off a little shaky, but proved once again that they are the best team in

Tonight the Tuskers started off a little shaky, but proved once again that they are the best team in the UFL by far with a dominant performance against the California Redwoods. A full recap is coming this weekend, but here are my notes from tonight’s game. Stats should be up by Saturday morning/Late Friday night depending on when I get back from my high school game assignment.

Doug Gabriel, Brian Stamper, and others return to Orlando

Former UCF star Doug Gabriel faced his former UFL team tonight. When asked if he had anything to prove to his old team, Gabriel said, “I don’t play to prove nothing. I just play m I’m just gonna go out there and play.” Gabriel also spoke about the Tuskers’ decision to release him just days before the season’s first game: “It’s a business. Everybody’s got to make decisions, you just have to accept them.” Gabriel had just one reception for 15 yards and two drops.

Doug Gabriel was not the only Redwood to enjoy a homecoming tonight. Former Lake Highland Prep standout T Brian Stamper joined former UCF Knights LG Steve Edwards, DE Paul Carrington, and C Mike Mabry as Redwoods returning to their old stomping grounds.

California offensive coordinator Mike Kruczek, former UCF head coach, probably has something to do with the invasion of ex-Knights.

Tuskers’ Injury News

Chas Gessner left the game in the first quarter with a shoulder injury. He landed awkwardly on his only reception of the night. TE Ryan Neufeld picked up a foot injury and left the game in the third quarter. C Enoka Lucas went down halfway through the fourth quarter with a leg injury, but returned to the game. TE Keith Heinrich picked up a mild concussion in the fourth quarter and was pulled as a precaution.

After the game, Coach Haslett admitted he was worried about Gessner’s injury. If the injury is as bad as Haslett’s appearance made it seem, Gessner might be done for the remainder of the season. Official word is expected in the next few days.

Quick Hits

Taye Biddle recorded his second straight 100 yard receiving game. He is the only receiver in UFL to reach the 100 yard mark this season.

Michael Pittman’s rushing touchdown in the second quarter was his first of the season and just the second rushing touchdown of the season for the Tuskers.

Matt Bryant missed a 46 yard field goal in the second quarter, his second miss of the season. Bryant finished 2 for 3 with a long of 33 yards.

The Redwoods changed quarterbacks late in the second quarter. Shane Boyd, the Redwoods’ week 1 starter, replaced Mike McMahon.

Ocoee High School’s marching band performed both during the game and at halftime.

For the second straight game, the Tuskers’ defense shut out the opposition for three quarters.

Official attendance for the game was 12,021. 17,015 tickets were distributed, a return rate of 70.6 percent.

Marcus Maxwell, the receiver who replaced Doug Gabriel on the Tuskers roster, caught 4 passes for 64 yards and a touchdown. Maxwell’s 36 yard touchdown catch set a new team record for the longest scoring play, breaking Taye Biddle’s previous record from week 1 by one yard.

After the game, coach Haslett was asked about the change in punt returners from Jayson Foster to Willie Andrews. Haslett based the decision on Andrews’ ability to hit the hole right away. Foster “dances too much” for Haslett’s taste, but marked Foster as a project for next season.

Photography: A Very Short Introduction
ISBN: 978-0-19-280164-7
Oxford University Press, Oxford.

Aprils Fools, and it’s hard to remember a nice weather day since the first day of spring. A storm March 26-27 left about 10 inches of wet snow here, with a water content of about 1 inch.

April Fools elk on Bear Basin Ranch.

A small but wicked storm Monday morning brought little moisture but the accompanying high wind whipped up a vicious ground blizzard. Sometime during this our little calf was caught out in the open and when I found her covered in windblown snow I thought she was dead. As I was walking away I saw a twitch and realized she actually was still alive.

I moved the calf to the barn on a sled, then rounded up the mother cow and put her in the paddock with her. Since Monday the calf has been under a heat lamp and I’ve been feeding it milk and milk replacement with an esophogeal tube and bag. Also, injections of vitamins A-D, B and C, and a drug called Nuflor. Three days later the calf is still unable to stand and nurse. Will she survive? I haven’t the slightest idea, but am surprised she has made it this long considering she was all but dead when I found her.

Word came yesterday that Neal Hart has passed away at the age of 84. Neal, the father of fellow pack-burro racer Steve Hart, has for years headed up the Ham radio team that keeps track of runners and their burros on the courses at the Leadville, Fairplay and Buena Vista races. His face was always a welcome and reassuring sight when I would see him on Mosquito Pass along with his faded-orange International Scout with the antennae for his radio equipment. I can still hear him — and it could be in a lightning storm, fog, blowing snow or hail, on a hot sunny day, or through a hypoxic haze. I didn’t matter whether I was winning or off the back. He would ask: “You need anything, Hal?” Neal always struck me as a kind and gentle man. I was very said to hear of his passing and know he will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Here’s the good news: Steve Edwards and I are planning a donkey and mule training clinic here in Westcliffe in September. The bad news: The clinic will limited to only 12 participants and their animals, though spectators will be welcome.

Steve is a renowned longears trainer and also has developed his own line of saddles and tack. He’s been featured on the Rural Heritage Hour on RFD TV and also teaches classes at Central Arizona College. Stay tuned for more details or contact me for more info or to reserve a space.

Apples were the only commodity not to drop in the ANZ international commodity price index last month.

The ANZ’s index of international commodity prices last month recorded its broadest fall in prices since the series started more than 20 years ago.

Every commodity, except apples, recorded a fall in December, ANZ economist Steve Edwards said today.

. . . The ANZ commodity price index recorded a 7.4 percent fall in the price of the basket in December, the fifth consecutive monthly drop in the series. The index is now 27 percent below its peak last July.

Pelt prices recorded the largest drop in December, slumping 62 percent from November to a new record low, Mr Edwards said.

Aluminium prices fell 20 percent to a five-year low, while wool and dairy prices both fell more than 12 percent.

Dairy prices were now at the level they were two years ago, before the start of the much heralded surge 18 months ago.

Wool prices had dropped for six successive months and were now only 2 percent above the lowest level recorded by the series since 1986, Mr Edwards said.

Log prices were down 4.4 percent, wood pulp prices down 3.7 percent and sawn timber prices down 2.2 percent.

Seafood and lamb prices both eased 2.4 percent, while venison and beef prices each dropped 1.4 percent.

In New Zealand dollar terms the index fell 6.1 percent last month, but is just 8.1 percent down on its peak of four months ago, and is now back to its level of a year ago.

The ANZ Commodities Price Index fell 7.2% in November, contributing to a 21% fall in four months.

Prices for dairy products fell 12% and have almost halved from their record levels a year ago. Prices for pelts tumbled 41%, the biggest decline among products tracked in the index. Beef, wool, lumber and aluminium all fell more than 10%. Seafood prices dropped for the first time in 18 months, sliding 0.6%. Lamb rose 4.3% and kiwifruit gained 0.3%.

Producers were cushioned from the slide in commodity prices by the weakening New Zealand dollar and the ANZ New Zealand Dollar Commodity Price Index was down only 1.8% in the latest month.

“Although the currency softened further in the month, it failed to match the drop in value of the commodities that we monitor,” ANZ economist Steve Edwards said in a statement. “It is clear that a weaker currency is acting as a buffer to falling commodity prices.”

Prices in yesterday’s on-line auction by Fonterra continued to slide with an average price of $4203.50 ($US2223) a tonne, 14% lower than last month’s auction and a fall of 49% since July.

Fonterra commercial director of GlobalTrade Guy Roper said the economic crisis had resulted in a significant drop in the demand for dairy commodities and a continued decline in prices had been expected.

“There will continue to be downward pressure on prices, until either the supply of product declines, or buyers have confidence that the global economic situation will improve,” Roper said.

Fonterra has been criticised for its auction which some feel is leading the market down. The Bull Pen disucsses that here.

However, the news isn’t all bad. Stock & Land expects agricultural commodities to rebound next year.

After the dust settles from the sell off across commodities triggered by the global financial crisis, agricultural commodities will benefit from a secure demand outlook and tight supplies to outperform metals and oil in 2009.
Regardless of the gloomy macroeconomic outlook people still need to eat; therefore agricultural commodities will be more resilient during the economic downturn.

“Demand for agricultural commodities tends to be less elastic, less responsive to economic factors, more responsive to population,” said Lawrence Eagles, a commodities analyst at J.P.
Over the next 20 years, New Zealand’s food and fibre producing capability will become increasingly important. Globally, rising population and economic growth is expected to increase demand for agricultural and forestry products. At the same time land and resources, such as freshwater, available for food and fibre production worldwide is likely to decline.

Despite this favourable long-term outlook for New Zealand’s primary production sectors, our industries, environment and broader society face a complex set of challenges to reap future opportunities. These challenges are exacerbated by the current global financial crisis that continues to unfold with uncertain impacts and duration.

Added to that is the growing threat of drought.

The contrast between irrigated and dryland in North Otago increases by the day, showing how badly we need rain and most of the east coast of both islands is similarly desperate for rain.

Commodity prices are at an 18 month low after a record fall of 7.4% last month.

The ANZ Commodity Price Index had its largest decline last month since it was launched in 1986, and was down nearly 11 per cent on a year earlier.

Nine of the 13 commodities recorded lower world prices in October.

Beef had the largest fall, down 17.7 per cent from September, followed by skins (16.2 per cent), aluminium (down 16 per cent) and wool (down 12.6 per cent).

Dairy prices had a smaller decline – down 9.9 per cent – but dominated the index.

The fall in dairy prices reflected softer commodity prices in general as investors lost confidence amid world market and economic turmoil.

Also depressing dairy prices was increased production from “fringe” dairy exporting nations, such as the United States, which were starting to increase production, said ANZ economist Steve Edwards.

Note the breast collar goes with the saddle but the britchin' is not Steve's design." width="240" height="214" />
Redbo in a Steve Edwards saddle.

A favorite old rancher once told me: “It’s better to get where you’re going on a slow horse than to go to the hospital on a fast horse.” Frankly, I won’t ride anything with ears that short.

When I first started riding my donkeys it was purely bareback. Back then I didn’t really ride often enough to make buying a saddle worthwhile. Over time, however, I became more interested in my donks as riding animals.

Thus began my great saddle search. First was an old McClellan infantry saddle that I found in the corner of a local saddle shop and had jury-rigged to make it easier and quicker to saddle my animals. In many ways, this was one of the best choices I made. It was light and fit the donkeys well, but it was hard as a rock and not very comfortable for me.

I went through a series of other saddles, all of which I bought, rode for a while, and then sold when I found them to be less than ideal. These included an Australian saddle, a treeless saddle, and a synthetic Western horse saddle.

My most recent saddle has been a Steve Edwards Trail Rider Lite, and this saddle has by far been the best. Steve designed this saddle around mule bars that he also developed. I like the way it fits my animals and also the way it fits me. It’s light at just 18 pounds. The breast collar rigging is unique and does not fall down around the donkey’s chest. I’m sure Steve’s Britchin’ is nice too but I’m still saving my pennies to completely outfit my rig.

A visit to one of the north’s biggest multicultural festivals

Yesterday we paid a visit to Music in the sun for music, food and drinks as the sun set over Don Valley.

Who did we see there? I’d heard Steve Lamacq mention Hiem a few times before but never watched them live. They appeared in the main arena and were good, quite electronic but more melodic and poppy than I was expecting. This is Electricity from 2004:

And following them was Steve Edwards, who I didn’t realise wrote and provided vocals for Bob Sinclar’s 2006 hit World, hold on (children of the sky):

Bob Sinclar also released Love generation, which Steve Edwards also performed live on Saturday.

There were several other arenas with other performers and DJs playing, as well as graffiti artists, food, drink, retail stalls and fairground rides.

The festival continues today from 1pm. If you do go down, also don’t miss the tasty African/Caribbean food from Broomhill’s UK Mama.
