Apple spot interno – EasyPay

If you haven’t noticed, the past week or so has been filled with… well, nothing. Not sur

If you haven’t noticed, the past week or so has been filled with… well, nothing. Not surprised? Technically, due to our crazy activeness in writing posts, you might have seen this coming. So. I have a more valid excuse this week, at least it’s a little less vague as “I was busy.” And way better than a disappointingly honest “I was just too lazy to give a cat’s whisker.” Although the last two are usually true, this week Jehovah has decided to at least give me an alibi for all of this blog’s millions of viewers.

My terribly horrible (no, I mean it was truly terribly horrible) reason is this: the internet. Or rather, airport. Or that little black box with the blinking green lights that’s plugged into the computer. I don’t really know the difference, and one day I’m going to ask Steve Jobs exactly why those little white boxes are called airports. It doesn’t really make much sense to me. All I know is that all of those things have decided to quit, or go on strike. Either that or they’re going through puberty as moody adolescents who throw fits and have mood-swings. If you didn’t understand my analogy, I mean that my internet sucks. When it works it works for an hour or less and only connects to one computer. In fact, it’s a miracle that I’m able to even publish this, since this is really an old post that I’ll be saving (and then publishing) when my internet connects for more than five minutes.

Have you ever gone camping? And not your lame excuse kind of camping where you pitch a tent in your backyard (or neighbor’s yard, if you want an adventure), but I mean in the (sort of) untouched wilderness of Utah, or Montana, or um… the park down the street. But anyway, the point is that things, things that normally don’t matter begin to become a hassle. Like washing your hands for example, brushing your teeth, avoiding bear wastes, or producing wastes. All of these things are hard to do whilst in the wilderness (might or might not apply to neighbor’s backyard). When you finally decide to take the long trek to the outhouse at night, everyone jumps up to go with you, you all need to take care of unfinished business. Right?

Well, the same goes for bad internet. When you haven’t used it in weeks and your email is piling up, or you haven’t harvested your crops on FarmVille and they’re all wilted, every chance you get to go do those things–you’ll take it. Which pretty much explains why my family takes a laptop with us wherever we go. If we’re at a coffee shop with free wi-fi: Get out the laptop! Cruising through residential areas: Get out the laptop! We’ve become first-class internet pirates. Although we don’t wear pirate hats or have parrots/monkeys on our shoulders, we are real deal. Taking over (not really) your internet for as long as we can. So beware, until I get my internet fixed, I might be parked outside your home, using your internet that you paid for with your own money (if you don’t have a password, that is) or rolling down your street at five miles per hour, looking for more internets to plunder. As a consolation, you should be honored.

Unless you’ve recently arrived in 2009 on a time machine, you know that smoking isn’t good for you. Did you know, however, that smoking isn’t good for your computer, either? It’s true, at least according to Apple. Two readers in different parts of the country claim that their Applecare warranties were voided due to second hand smoke. Both readers appealed their cases up to the office of God Steve Jobs himself. Both lost.

Frankly, I’m with Apple on this one. I used to repair computers in an industrial environment and the machines off the factory floor were nothing compared to the smokers machines I have seen. You computer has a fan in it to ventilate the heat. This means that it sucks in the air around it and blows that air over the delicate electronics inside. With smokers, this coats everything with smoke tar. Opening one of these computers is like putting your face in an ashtray and blowing.

Gotta love that Steve Jobs. He never was one to hold back, and even now, when he’s the CEO of the Universe (or something like that), he won’t be found spouting corporate speak.

CrunchGear tells the story of a small software development company called The Little App Factory. It made an app for the Mac called iPodRip, one of those tools for transferring music from an iPod to a computer. A law firm representing Apple sent The Little App Factory a letter, informing the company it had violated some of Apple’s trademarks, and instructed it to stop using the “iPod” bit in the app’s name.

iPodRip has been around for nearly seven years and CrunchGear’s Daniel Brusilovsky says it has been downloaded more than five million times. You’d think Apple’s legal sniffer hounds, Baker & McKenzie, might have acted a tad sooner…

Anyway, iPodRip developer and The Little App Factory CEO John Devor felt this was all rather unfair, so he wrote directly to El Jobso himself. Here’s a little excerpt from his impassioned plea for special treatment sanity (edited by me for brevity, but you can read the whole thing here);

Dear Mr. Jobs,

I doubt you’re aware but we recently received a letter from a law firm working on Apple’s behalf instructing us that we had violated several of Apple’s trademarks in our application iPodRip and asking us to cease using the name and Apple trademarks in our icons.

It is quite obvious that we mean Apple no harm with the use of the name iPodRip, or of the inclusion of trademarked items in our icons… …we are quite aware that Apple support and store staff have recommended our software on numerous occasions as far back as 2004 so we have felt that we were doing something right!

With this in mind, we are in desperate need of some assistance and we beseech you to help us to protect our product and our shareware company, I myself dropped out of school recently to pursue a path in the Mac software industry, and you yourself have been a consistent inspiration for me.

If there is anything at all you can do with regards to this matter, we would be most grateful.

Best,
John Devor

Poor fellow. Obviously he has poured his heart and soul into his company, and he has worked hard this last half-decade building a strong brand and large customer base. He wants to protect his investment, and why not? Apple has, it seems, been aware of the product, to some degree, for an awfully long time, so why slap him with a C&D letter now?

So Steve Jobs gets the email and thinks about this, right? He considers the years of service this guy and his company have provided for iTunes users around the world. He considers carefully the late-in-the-game complaint from Baker & McKenzie. He feels a swell of pride at the obvious passion of those in the Mac development community who so loyally support his products and strive to make the Mac ecosystem a bigger, brighter and more worthwhile place to be. Right?

Of course not. He’s Steve Jobs, people! This is his reply:

Change your apps name. Not that big of a deal.

Steve

Sent from my iPhone

I nearly fell off my chair in laughter when I saw that. I’m not sure I agree with him that’s it’s “not that big of a deal” (after all, this company has invested many years in their brand and built a considerable customer base) but I admire Steve’s no-nonsense attitude. He says exactly what’s on his mind, no PR-spin, and sends it straight from his iPhone, typos-and-all.

The Little App Factory acquiesced (what else could it do?) and renamed the app iRip. It also changed the app’s icon. Perhaps this whole affair was a thorn in the side, but I don’t feel too sorry for them, the tech press is giving them a lot of attention right now, and that’s gotta be good for business, right?

The New York Times is reporting that Apple CEO Steve Jobs himself has filed a patent for an app that would force handheld device users to view an advertisement without interruption. I like where Apple`s head is but what`s really got me going is AdMob.

Earlier this week, Google’s AdMob released the first interactive video advertising product for iPhones. Think of the usability of “AdWords” but with rich media on an iPhone.

With the snail’s pace that companies adopt new media ad tools, there is a tremendous opportunity to gain some serious market share with bargain-priced campaigns.

The sheer thought of the potential of these mobile ad tools has me more excited than the time that I snuck into the senior girls’ locker room in the eighth grade.

TUAW (The Unofficial Apple Weblog) has a wonderful story today about an eBay auction for an original Apple I computer, which starts out at $50,000. And what do you get for your winning bid? TUAW explains:

“A non-working Apple I motherboard, the original shipping box (with the return address being the home of Steve Jobs’ parents), and the original manual, complete with schematics on how to take the motherboard and build a workable computer out of it.

“The original full-page advertisement for Apple was included with each Apple I. This features the original Apple ‘Isaac Newton’ logo that was designed by the third founder of Apple, Ronald Wayne. Wayne also wrote the Apple I manual. Finally, you’ll get a photograph of every other owner of this computer. The existing owner has a picture of himself, the computer, and Steve Wozniak that he’s including.”

By April of 1976, Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak co-founded Apple Computer. The Apple I, their first product, was the first single-circuit board computer. It had a video interface, 8K of RAM and a keyboard. Its processor, the 6502 designed by Rockwell, cost a mere $25.

The computer, originally mounted on plywood with components visible, was first unveiled at a meeting of the now-famous Homebrew Computer Club which was based in Palo Alto, CA. A local computer dealer (The Byte Show) ordered 100 units, provided Wozniak and Jobs agreed to assemble the kits for customers. In all, 200 were built and sold for $666.66 each.

This is an extraordinary specimen of the Apple I - widely acknowledged to be the first hobby/home computer ever built. And the important archive of ephemera included in the package makes it practically unique. TUAW’s writeup is accompanied by several thumbnails of documents packaged together with the computer (including the cover of the manual, above).

However, there is one caveat: if you happen to be the successful bidder, you are asked to travel to Roseville, California to pick it up due to the irreplaceable nature of the Apple I. So what are you waiting for?! The holidays are right around the corner!

While I often complain about being technologically challenged, I also consider myself and others like me Computer Pioneers.
I went from a Commodore 64 in 1982 to an Amiga, then a Macintosh, (one of several), to my current PC.
The Commodore, (Wisdom of the day- who would ever need more than 64 megabytes?) worked like a typewriter, except you didn’t have a carriage return and the words parsed all over the place. You couldn’t always see the beginning of your sentence, or the end of your sentence when it jumped as you were typing. Disconcerting. This beauty cost me about $1,000 plus classes to learn how to use it.

To print on my C Itoh printer, I had to program the page like this:

SP1:pp66:pg55:lm15:re70:vpt< (manually <> (return) eleven times.

For a different program you had to reset the printer turning on and off various dip switches. Instructions: Bend over the machine to read from left to right, with cord to the right, hold a flashlight and use a fingernail or small screwdriver to set the switches.

The formula read like this:

SW1 8,7,2-closed. 1,3,4,5,6 open.
SW2 2,4,7-closed. 1,3,5,6,8 open.
(Change #8 for programs that double space to #6 on switch 2.

You had to know braille to figure out what was off and on. The flashlight, if you could hold it, didn’t help much.

To boot up my word processing program I had to type in a load formula, no auto boot.
I guess it isn’t such a big deal when I think about today’s long singular lines, no caps, passwords, some numbers and signs, but, at the time, it was daunting and complicated and didn’t make intuitive sense. Nothing popped up automatically in your address line. You didn’t even have an address line. If you pressed the wrong button you could easily lose your work. Now, at least, you get a window that asks if you want to destroy, or delete work. Yes, they were quite primitive, those first computers.

We spent the money, helped iron out the bugs, kept buying the next generation up until they could be mass produced inexpensively, so everyone could own a computer. We fought with those machines and cried over tossing them for the next best thing. We were the pioneers.

What the heck, learning truly is the best entertainment. I’m surprised I got from there to here.
I’m grateful for my computer. I don’t do anything fancy on it except manipulate pictures, which I love. Its way better than the old typewriter. Thank you Bill Gates and Steve Jobs and half that generation for teaching an old dolly new tricks.

Will zurück in die Freiheit.

Man will fast alles selbst machen.

Steve Jobs’ next big thing is being retooled, Asian supply-chain sources report

Artist's rendition.
Live by the rumor, die by the rumor. Or at least go on life support.

The Apple (AAPL) tablet computer that all Silicon Valley has taken as a given — but no one outside of Cupertino seems to have seen — won’t be arriving early next year, as widely rumored, and may not appear until the second half of 2010.

This according to a report Thursday in DigiTimes, a Taipei-based daily newspaper that covers — with uneven results — every hiccup in the Taiwanese and greater Chinese electronics industry. At one point, MacRumors, which trades in Apple gossip itself, stopped citing the paper without heavy disclaimers about its track record (see here.)

Still, the report includes pricing and component details that, if true, could cause Apple’s competitors to rethink their own product plans. Among other things, DigiTimes reports that Apple is gearing up to make two models, one with a 10.6 inch LCD screen, another with a far more expensive 9.7-inch organic LED (OLED) panel.

Based on the cost of components, an OLED tablet might sell for as much as $1,200-1,500, according to DigiTimes, although the price point could be reduced if subsidized by, say, AT&T (T) or Verizon (VZ). DigiTimes‘ sources expect the 10.6-inch model to priced in the $800-1,000 range.

You can read the full report here. Take it all with a grain of salt.

UPDATE: Piper Jaffray’s Gene Munster, one of several analysts who had predicted an early 2010 launch, issued his take on the DigiTimes report in a quick note to clients Thursday morning:

“Bottom line. At this point we cannot confirm or deny the validity
of this report, but believe the exact timing is irrelevant given
Street models do not currently reflect the tablet, expectations
for actual units in 2010 are low, and investors focus is more on
whether the tablet is real and less on timing.

“For purposes of sensitivity, assuming the tablet comes out on
September 1, we believe Apple would sell around 650,000 units at a
$600 ASP in CY10 and would equate to an increase of about 1% to
revenue.”

Apple shares closed at $200.51, down 5.45 points (2.65%) for the day.

Let’s jump in the wayback machine and take a look at Steve Jobs, master salesman, first teasin

Let’s jump in the wayback machine and take a look at Steve Jobs, master salesman, first teasing a fall 1983 audience with the first showing of the now famous “1984″ Mac ad, then bringing a January 1984 audience to its feet with the unveiling of the Macintosh.

Now sure, he doesn’t have to work very hard to make the sale. His audiences are both favorable Apple crowds. They want to cheer. They already see Jobs as a hero. Of course, living up to such high expectations can be a challenge in itself.

But we see here two examples of stunning visuals that resonated worldwide. The “1984″ ad appeared once on television — once – and has been talked about ever since. Notice that the ad doesn’t really have a lick of logos; it’s all pathos. It uses the word computer once. It doesn’t mention IBM. It doesn’t need to. Jobs sets up the industry history and the challenge before his company; he then fires a visual ICBM into the cultural metaphorosphere to declare his intent to fight and win.

The Mac unveiling is a very different kind of visual aid speech. Jobs does much less talking in this clip than I expect you to do in class for your visual aid speech. However, in his context, his stepping aside to let the product speak for itself is brilliant salesmanship. He doesn’t have to use his words to persuade the audience; he just sets his machine center stage and turns it on, a move that by itself takes guts (just ask Bill Gates).

The Mac demo looks laughably cheesy just 25 years later; you probably get better graphics on your cell phone. But recall: the only font most people had ever seen on a computer was something like Terminal. The only voice people had heard from a computer was the WOPR in Wargames. In 1984, the Macintosh was amazing.

Odds are you won’t come up with a visual aid for your Speech 101 performance that will bring 3000 people to their feet and change personal computing forever (but don’t let me stop you from trying!). But when you’re preparing your speeches, when you’re getting ready to persuade an audience, think like Steve Jobs. Look for a visual that will grab your listeners’ attention, make them say, “Wow!” and fix you and your message in their minds for a very long time.

Well, I’m not exactly an Apple fanboy (yet) but I can imagine a lot of people being pissed off over this report by the New York Times: Apple Wouldn’t Risk Its Cool Over a Gimmick, Would It?. It all concerns a patent application filed by Apple to control the freezing or the un-freezing of an operating system based on the response over an advertisement. From the patent filed with the US Patent and Trademark Office:

1. A computer-implemented method for operating a device, the method comprising:disabling a function of an operating system in a device;presenting an advertisement in the device while the function is disabled; andenabling the function in response to the advertisement ending.

Interesting? I could infer that:

1. Apple or the developer could reserve the right to display ads against a product or service.

2.These ads cannot be skipped a.k.a. Tivo-style

3. And this is the key point. Based on the response to the advertisement by the user, the product or service could be launched or frozen from use.

Well, LOL ! I can’t imagine Apple would really try one of these on its customers. It’s one thing to push your ability to control your user’s experience. This is just crossing the line ! So what could be the other reasons?

Prevent anyone else from patenting such an absurd concept. Apple and Steve Jobs then become the knight in shining armor.

Let the developer decide if he wants to use it. If he does, then Apple takes a higher revenue share.

Apple gets selective over which products it has the right to use this technology on. Given, it’s harsh stand on Google products, this could be a way of pushing back.

Maybe, delivery of free content or an extended period of use if you purchase something through an ad. Basically, buy this product and you could get the demo version for another 45 days or get the complete version free !

All theories or maybe something like “Watch ads for 30 days and get this software free !”

Or demo for 30 days after that, you have to watch ads and answer Q’s to use the software. Else you could just buy it.

Man, really if this is launched, it’s going to create one more point of battle between Apple and the hackers who constantly subvert Apple’s software.
