TERRELL OWENS: I’m always appreciative of every gift. You know, we can get caught up in the superficial part of it, but it’s the thought that counts.

LAILA ALI: I receive a lot of bad gifts. I can’t even think of one that’s the one.

MELODY THORNTON: My gifts have gotten really bad over the years. Like, the more successful I get, my family is, like, “I just didn’t get you anything.” And it’s, like, “Why is that?” You know what I mean? Why? What is that? But, I haven’t ever really gotten a super bad gift.

AUDRINA PARTRIDGE: The worst gift, oh my gosh. MTV, last Christmas, gave me a boyfriend pillow with an arm like this [hangs H.E.R. arm up] because they said, since I can’t keep a boyfriend, that would be my boyfriend to cuddle with forever. And I was, like, “Really? Thanks. That’s cool.” It was kind of embarrassing.

TOO SHORT: That I’ve ever received? Probably when they send you that little summons . . . a guy knocks on your door and says, “Is your name Todd?” and they hand you a lawsuit. That’s the worst thing I’ve ever received.

Disclaimer: I know, I know. It’s waaaay too easy to pick on people, and opinions, like the ones I’m about to rip on. But… this one touched a nerve.

I’m not sure what “morning shows” are like in other areas, but here in the Twin Cities, they tend to be comprised of a group of DJs, headed by a 30- or 40-something dude, with two or three 20-something dudes to laugh and “yeah” at the 30- or 40-year-old’s diberately offensive jokes, and a token 20-something chick, to get repeatedly interrupted by the dudes, and apparently satisfy a quota of some kind. They spend 4 of the wee morning hours bantering about absolutely nothing of any relevance and spouting off opinions about any number of things that they aren’t qualified to accurately analyze.

One of the morning shows I am referring to is the Dave Ryan Show at KDWB (the local Top 40 station). There’s Dave, the main dude who’s been hosting the show for like, a century; and Lena, the latest in revolving 20-something, quota-fulfilling chicks who appears to be second in command or something, as I tend to hear her “yeah, like, I think that [totally bigoted nonsense opinion, related in some way or another to pop culture and news headlines]” almost as often as I hear Dave say, “Seriously? I know way better than these other people because I know better than they do.”

Then there’s Steve-O and Crisco, whose main purposes seem to be chiming in every so often as the (still terrible and wildly offensive) Voice of Reason when Dave or Lena says something completely over the top. Oh, and their incessant paid advertisements about how they used to be fat, but as a result of spending lots of money on a manufactured diet product, now they’re not!! So you should buy it.

Anyway.

So, I work in an office setting, where we’re able to have radios at low volume or use headphones, as long as we can still hear the dreaded phone ring, so I take advantage of this and have gotten what I listen to, and when, down to a science. My favorite thing to listen to while at work is talk radio. I start by listening to the Dave Ryan show when I get in at 8, and usually switch to NPR once the boring shows end, between 9 and 10. The thing is, I understand that when they say their usual offensive crap, it’s mostly exaggerated and mostly for ratings. I get that it’s entertainment and not a news and serious commentary show. I expect that most people are reasonable and not hateful. I can ignore it well enough and just pay attention to the parts that are entertaining to me. But man, sometimes someone just goes over the top, and sounds way too genuine for comfort.

This morning, Dave was discussing Chris Brown’s recent profanity-laced Twitter updates about how Wal-Mart was supposedly blacklisting him because they didn’t have his new album in stock.* Chris Brown apparently went nuts about it, all over the internet, complete with all kinds of swear words and a plethora of other garbage for one to roll their eyes about.

Today, it was discovered that Wal-Mart does, in fact, carry the album; they were simply sold out of them at the time that Chris Brown visited their particular location.

Right, he’s an idiot. Forgettable recording artist gets mad because he assumes that the reason that people don’t want to buy his terrible CD is because he beat up his girlfriend at the time, Rihanna. Turns out, while he should have been right, he wasn’t, and so now he looks stupid.

Dave Ryan then begins to discuss Chris Brown’s dumbassery, and then further elaborates about how he feels that women’s rights groups haven’t adequately — or ever — addressed the issue of Chris Brown assaulting Rihanna, and then surmises that this could possibly be because all we feminists think Chris Brown is just so cute. What’s wrong with these women? A high-profile guy beats up his high-profile girlfriend, it’s all over the news, and these feminists have nothing to say about it! Must be because they think he’s hot!! Also, Dave Ryan is ashamed that we aren’t outside of Wal-Mart, calling for nationwide boycotts.

No, Dave Ryan, you fucking moron. You’re wrong. And you clearly pay absolutely no attention whatsoever to women’s rights activists or any feminist community. Know how I know this?

Here, Dave Ryan, let me Google that for you.

Or, we could be a little easier on you. Maybe the words “feminist” and “response” are too much for you to handle. Hell, we don’t even have to type a complete phrase in order to find scores of relevant hits about feminist and women’s rights activists responses to Chris Brown beating Rhiann.

If you go to the hugely popular feminist blog Feministing, and type “Chris Brown” into their search bar, the first page alone has 24 relevant hits.

Also, Dave Ryan, have you ever heard of that little organization called NOW? You know, the National Organization for Women, that one organization that likes to talk about silly lady stuff like gender equality and misogyny? How about the president of NOW, Terry O’Neill, whose been vocal and up-front about her history as a survivor of domestic violence? Have you heard of her? I assume you may have heard of NOW, considering the fact that you care so much about women who are victims of domestic abuse. And how much of a supporter you are of women’s rights. Interesting, how, if you Google “NOW president,” the fourth hit is “NOW president Terri O’Neill on Chris Brown.”

Wasn’t that exactly what it was you were claiming didn’t exist? Because I’m pretty sure that the president of the nation’s leading women’s right’s organization made a public statement about Chris Brown.

Also, Dave Ryan? NOW has a lot more to be concerned about than celebrities with entitlement issues. Like equal access to abortion, and other serious women’s rights issues all over the news right now. Picketing local Sam Goodys? Not at the top of the priority list. But if you’re so concerned, we’d be happy to cheer you on as you start a movement about something that you’re so clearly passionate about.

So, Dave Ryan, and Lena Svenson, and your deliberately oblivious cohorts, could you please at least attempt to know what the fuck you’re talking about before you spout off a bunch of inaccurate nonsense all over the airwaves? Women who don’t give a fuck about what Chris Brown looks like will be grateful.

Sony is in the process of inking deals to bring back the “Zombieland” team for a second installment, but this time the bloody comedy is poised to unspool in 3D. And Paramount has greenlit a third “Jackass,” which will also be shot in 3D.

Steve and I had our 2nd anniversary last month, so you get to look at our wedding pictures again.

I min ungdom upptäckte jag Nordiska Samfundet mot Plågsamma Djurförsök, numera Djurens Rätt. Jag lärde mig att griskultingar kastrerades utan bedövning, att hönor sitter instängda i burar motsvarande ett A4-arks yta, samsandes sisådär 10-15 stycken om detta utrymme. Att kor, grisar, får och hästar transporteras utan mat, vatten och vila kors och tvärs över hela Europa och slaktas på löpande band av underbetalda, outbildade slaktare. Att kaniner, råttor, hundar och katter hålls i laboratorier där kemiska preparat testas på dem under tortyrliknande former. Att minkar, kaniner, hundar, katter, chinchillor, med flera, hålls i småsmå burar för sin päls och att de avlivas medelst gas eller elektriska stötar från pinnar uppkörda i deras anal.

Det var 18 år sedan insikterna om ovanstående fick mig att ta ställning mot industriellt massutnyttjande av djur. Jag slutade äta kött, köpa diskmedel och smink testat på djur, och vägrar att bära päls. Ibland torskar jag på sminkfronten och får så inihelvete dåligt samvete och skäms något förbannat över detta. Oftast brukar jag inte predika mina val för andra, jag brukar heller inte fördöma andras (brist på) val, om inte de börjat. Till exempel genom att kommentera min matlåda på jobbet (vegetarisk mat är fortfarande väldigt spännande för många).

Därför blir jag så orimligt förbannad när personer i min närhet är så urbota korkade att de har mage att uttala sig om att päls är “ekologiskt dessutom och miljövänligt såklart”. Därför har jag så svårt att hålla tyst när insiktslösa uppfattningar om att päls är okej “så länge djuret inte finns och inte mår dåligt” uttrycks på fullaste allvar. Nej det är väl klart som fan att det inte mår dåligt NU, men har du ens reflekterat över vad vägen fram till pälsen i reklamen inneburit i djurets lidande och miljöpåverkan genom otaliga garvningsprocesser? Snälla, läs på innan du säger något mer.

VERDICT:
7/10 Hematomas

Being that it was produced by the man of the hour and since I remember an episode of the show where he antiqued someone in broad daylight, I’m gonna go ahead and enter this one into Spike Jonze week.

Jackass is about a group of guys with alarmingly high pain thresholds that make idiots of themselves in public places and hurt themselves for our enjoyment.

And it is totally sweet.

I’m sure the humor here isn’t for everyone and it might not appeal to an older/more refined crowd, but if you’re like me and your memories of TV in High School boiled down to you and your friends crapping yourselves in the school cafeteria from laughing so hard over last night’s episode of Jackass and Chappelle’s Show, then yeah, you’ll like Jackass: The Movie.

The formula is simple: it’s funny when other people get hurt, not to the point where they get put in a coma or anything, but more like when someone gets hit in the balls by a football. See, that sentence just made me laugh, and I bet it made you laugh, too. Everyone appreciates a good nut shot, or at least I think everyone does.

So if you haven’t already gathered, Jackass: The Movie is really just like watching the show for an hour and a half, only they can curse now and no longer have the TV censors to stop them from filming someone getting a toy car put up their hoo-ha. But that’s cool, I’ve watched Jackass marathons for longer than that and the next time a repeat comes on to break up the God-awful shit they have on MTV nowadays, there’s no doubt in my mind that I’ll be dropping whatever I’m doing so that I can laugh my ass off for the next half-hour.

And, yes, it gets pretty damn gross, but the show was gross, too. No surprises there.

There’s no acting, there’s no script, there’s nothing really to judge this movie on other than whether it’s funny or not, which it is. But that’s one of the reasons I like Jackass; anyone could have made that show, anyone could have made this movie, and these guys are the ones that finally just did it and capitalized on it. It’s like the R-rated version of America’s Funniest Home Videos, and that’s a pretty freakin’ sweet pitch for a show if you ask me.

Even if you catch this movie on TV, it’s still really funny. It’s also better than the sequel and I dig that some of the best skits aren’t even gross in the least. Jackass: The Movie won’t convert you if laughing at the expense of others isn’t exactly your cup of urine, but for the rest of us who can’t help but laugh a little before asking someone if they’re okay, you’re gonna have a good time with this one.

Confronted with shoe walls awash in vulcanized soles and increasingly minimalist silhouettes I can’t help but wonder if we’re seeing the skate shoe business, known to some as the last and final bastion of early-00’s profitability for the industry, on the verge of commoditizing itself like what happened with hard-goods. Despite noble efforts from PJ Ladd and TK to goose footwear pricepoints – a bold move in the shadow of a global recession monster – the market seems to dictate that kids basically want $50 Vans, or close approximations thereof, heel bruises and short life spans be damned.

Of course sooner or later tastes will change and tongues will puff up once more, but you have to wonder if technological innovations like the space-age materials currently being pushed by Gravis dude above, or Sole Tech’s shoe lab, or DC’s continued efforts to promote its Super Suede material, are doomed to become the shoe version of carbon fiber decks and air-core wheels. Concaves and dimensions come and go but the skateboard deck hasn’t changed much in the last 18 years, even though the hammer era saw kids of all weight classes snapping boards faster than ever. Who’s to say that the current generation, who don’t remember the armoured tanks we used to push around in, don’t see shoes the same way now?

Now this isn’t my usual sepia-toned spiel about how we all need to go back to the good old days and skate only painted curbs so I don’t feel so horribly insecure. Paying nearly twice as much for shoes that were harder to skate in and only marginally more comfy is a bargain only a fool or a well-paid masochist like TV’s Steve-O would entertain. But I kind of wonder if the shoe companies aren’t painting themselves into a corner here, profit-wise. Meanwhile you’ve got deck conglomerates pushing and shoving to get into the footwear business, and with companies like DC white-labeling the Lynx to shops or whoever, what’s it even mean to be a skate shoe company anymore? It’s like they’re tiptoeing toward blank deck territory, which recently obliterated professional skateboarding forevermore.

But even though there’s so many skate shoe companies now all basically pushing the same product relatively cheaply, nobody really wants anything else right? So how is this different than boards? Most kids don’t give a shit if they snap a board in two weeks versus a month, cuz that’s how boards are. Or, kids don’t care enough to light a sales fire under those Almost disc-decks. The Arto shoe purportedly lasts six weeks longer than a comparable shoe*, but are kids that now buy six pairs of shoes per year going to flock to Gravis so they only have to buy shoes four times per year? People used to a regular turnover maybe don’t want their shoes to last longer, like how you want a fresh board every so often and aren’t trying to ride the same deck for 12 months.

Shit, I don’t run a shoe company, maybe the simple-shoe revolution of the 00’s is all part of their master plan to move more shoes faster. It just seems like it could wind up biting them in the ass, the way all the deck manufacturers are hustling to diversify into clothes and whatnot. Consider: with next to nothing in the way of construction advancement (slicks aside) deck prices have stayed roughly the same for almost 20 years, or at least seriously lagged the inflation rate. (Ye olde inflation calculator puts a $55 board in 1992 at $75 in 2008 dollars.) Skateboard economy, heal thyself…

The dust in this house is older than me.

Will lives in a house in Arlington. It is his mother’ house, but she rarely stays here, and it serves as a hostel for a few of us. This place doesn’t feel like His Mother’s House (granted, his mother isn’t a Mother and Will, the rest of us, call her by her first name, Tina). The walls, cracks in the floor, kitchen counters, bookshelves are dirty. Covered in dust. Sticky. Inviting.

We mostly sleep in the living room. There are two couches, and now the blowup mattress that I brought. Scotty, the thirty-year-old black tenant (he’s a rapper) can often be heard cackling at something on the cartoon network in the room next to us.

All of us here are artistic. There are at least three film makers, multiple musicians, two painters, all of us write. We sleep until two in the afternoon, some of us, wake up and play piano or write, putter around the house, maybe shower, and then the other have come home from their part-time jobs, or those who live elsewhere have finished the-summertime-obligation-of-dinner-with-the-parents and congregate to work on our film project, or drink beer, or sit, crowded in the living room and subconsciously realize that we are, indeed, family. Cliqued. Yes. But we are.

V° POSTO – Robert Downey jr.

Arrestato nel 1996 per guida in stato di ebbrezza, per possesso di eroina, crack e cocaina, oltre che per detenzione illecita di una pistola 357 Magnum con cui stava  spensieratamente sparando all’impazzata credendo di essere a Napoli in pieni festeggiamenti di  Capodanno. Nel 2000 è stato nuovamente fermato per possesso di cocaina e anfetamine.

IV° POSTO – Edward Furlong

La carriera:  John Connor in “Terminator 2 – Il giorno del Giudizio”.  A fianco di Meryl Streep e Liam Neeson in “Prima e Dopo” (1996);  “American History X”(1998). Verrà anche scritturato da Steve Buscemi per “Animal Factory” con Willem Dafoe (2000), nonché dal pessimo Pupi Avati nel pessimo “I Cavalieri che Fecero L’impresa” (2001).

La carriera criminale: arrestato nel 2001 per incidente e guida senza patente, due volte a distanza di quattro ore. e nel 2004 nel tentativo di liberare delle aragoste da una drogheria.

III° POSTO – Marilyn Manson

Arrestato in Florida nel 1994 con l’accusa di “Violazione del codice di intrattenimento” per essersi esibito nudo durante un concerto e nel 2001, dopo un concerto a Detroit, in seguito a una denuncia per molestie sessuali. Girano voci inoltre di una indagine della polizia USA per istigazione al cucciolicidio; Manson avrebbe infatti lanciato al pubblico di un suo concerto cuccioli vivi di husky dicendo “il concerto non inizia finché non  uccidete questi piccoli bastardi”.

II° POSTO – Steve O,

Arrestato nel 2002 a Los Angeles per aggressione e atti osceni in luogo pubblico, nel 2003 in Svezia per possesso di sostanze stupefacenti e per aver urinato su un pacchetto di patatine in Pennsylvania. Nel 2008 viene nuovamente arrestato per possesso di cocaina.

I° POSTO – Christian Slater

Nel 1989 l’attore è stato arrestato per la prima volta per resistenza a pubblico ufficiale e guida pericolosa, Christian, presumibilmente ubriaco, aveva distrutto una cabina telefonica con la sua macchina. E’ stato poi arrestato nel 1994 per avere tentato di portare su un aereo una pistola calibro 9 dicendo “questa può sempre servire!”. nel  1997 quando sotto effetto di alcool, cocaina ed eroina, il “bad boy” di Hollywood aggredisce la sua fidanzata Michelle Jonas e poi si scaglia urlando “siete solo chiacchere e distintivo” contro i poliziotti e nel 2005 a New York con l’accusa di molestie; Slater avrebbe infatti palpato una donna 70enne in un marciapiede di Manhattan a New York.
