Oh to be a poet… I love poets. I always have. I’m pretty sure it all started with Dr. Se

Oh to be a poet… I love poets. I always have. I’m pretty sure it all started with Dr. Seuss, who made books and language fun for me. Although I still adore Dr. Seuss, my tastes have evolved from the days I would beg my Daddy to please please please read me Green Eggs and Ham just one more time. In my budding adolescence I recall discovering Edgar Allen Poe. His beautiful Annabell Lee, his raven, and his ever creepy tell-tale heart had me thinking that he was the coolest most clever writer ever! Even then I had a thing for the dark, shadow side of humanity. In high school, I came to appreciate Shakespeare’s stories of love, betrayal and life lessons though comedy and tragedy, which I can say mirror my own experiences in love and life. In college there was the whole coffee house scene complete with complaint rock and emo spoken word performances describing harrowing anguish and the ever calamitous state of our world as only youth from the 90′s could tell it. I found validation, solace, and amusement in Jim Morrison, Oscar Wilde, Maya Angelou, ee cummings, T.S. Elliot, John Keats, Pablo Neruda, Rumi and others. But not all poets are from a time long before my own. Tupac, Notorious B.I.G., Steven Patrick Morrissey, Jill Scott, Tori Amos, and Prince are a few more of my favorite word magicians. Profound, prolific, thought provoking and inspiring… This is why I love poets. They use words to translate love, pain, loss, joy, apathy and every sentiment really. They mix language and emotion and string together sentences that can deeply touch the human spirit. Poets help us understand life the way only art can. To be a poet is to be able to experience life, and then write about it so that the rest of us can feel it.

This week I was given a poem written by Naomi Shihab Nye. I drank in this poem with a writer’s thrist. Its been with me since I read it a few days ago. I feel compelled to share it here. If I were a poet, I’d wish to write like Nye. I hope you enjoy it as much as I expect you will. Oh, and to all the poets out there, thank you for writing.

So Much Happiness by Naomi Shihab Nye

It is difficult to know what to do with so much happiness.

With Sadness there is something to rub against, a wound to tend with lotion and cloth.

When the world falls in around you, you have pieces to pick up, something to hold in your hands, like ticket stubs or change.

But happiness floats.

It doesn’t need you to hold it down.

It doesn’t need anything.

Happiness lands on the roof of the next house, singing, and disappears when it wants to.

You are happy either way.

Even the fact that you once lived in a peaceful tree house, and now live over a quarry of voice and dust, cannot make you unhappy.

Everything has a life of its own.

It too could wake up filled with possibilities of coffee cake and ripe peaches, and love even the floor which needs to be swept, the soiled linens and scratched records…

Since there is no place large enough to contain so much happiness, you shrug, you raise your hands, and it flows out of you, into everything you touch.

You are not responsible.

You take no credit,

as the night sky takes no credit for the moon, but continues to hold it,

and to share it, and in that way, be known.

19 September 2011 Good evening you wonderful loves of my life. Has it only been a day since we last

19 September 2011

Good evening you wonderful loves of my life.

Has it only been a day since we last spoke? Or since I last spoke at you? Who knows?

I promise to punctuate tonight’s posts with the songs shuffling through my music player. It’ll be just like you’re here with me.

“Yes, I am blind.” -Morrissey

Mr. Steven Patrick Morrissey may be blind, but at least he never spoke like a swashbuckler. (As far as I know.)

Some of my astutest (most astute?) readers may be aware today is a day commemorating the verbalizing of vagrants del mar. Yes, today is talk like a pirate day.

“By the end of the evening I was saying no doubt.” -The Cribs

No doubt I cannot stand this day. Someone actually spoke at me as if they were a pirate today. If you are thinking this is a good idea, let me remind you why it is never a good idea to celebrate talk like a pirate day aloud.

You are not a pirate (my apologies to our pirate readers, especially Capt. Edward Trenchmouth)

I am not a pirate (my apologies to myself if I am, in fact, a pirate)

Get your booty out of my face

I am currently listening to “Luzerne” by The Trolleyvox, which is an album I reviewed when I was a reviewer at SLUG Magazine in Salt Lake City, UT. (The curious reader can even see an example of one of my reviews here. I will neither defend nor deride my insufferable, hyperbolic prose. If this review whets your whistle just search the site for “Joey P. Richards” and find some more.) However, the song on repeat-peat-peat-peat in my brain all day is “Love You Like a Love Song” by Selena Gomez & The Scene.

In summation, I hate talk like a pirate day (so much so I refuse to write it properly), love Selena Gomez and am “holding out for that teenage feeling.” (Neko Case)

Morrissey Year: 1988 Artist: Morrissey Hit Songs: The More You Ignored Me, The Closer I Get, Heaven

Year: 1988
Artist: Morrissey
Hit Songs: The More You Ignored Me, The Closer I Get, Heaven Knows I’m Miserable Now,
Every day is like Sunday, Panic, This Charming Man, How Soon is Now.
Album: Viva Hate

One of the artist in my bucket list I want to see perform live is Steven Patrick Morrissey (born 22 May 1959). He is the lyricist and vocalist of the alternative rock band The Smiths, an English group formed in Manchester in 1982. Following the demise of the Smiths in 1998 he released the Viva Hate album that includes the track Suedehead and this single charted higher than any of the singles released by his former band, reaching number five in the UK Singles Chart, and remains one of Morrissey’s most well-known songs.

If you came across the movie The Craft (1996) or heard theme song of the television series Charmed then you have stumbled upon his work (How Soon is Now), better yet, If you are not hiding under a rock in 1994 you cannot miss “The More You Ignore Me, the Closer I Get” played in the airwaves. But Morrissey was big when I was growing up, bigger than that of a movie soundtrack that you cannot help but be drawn to his record releases. His distinct voice and those mundane lyrics that you could not possibly fathomed in your whole life can add value to the refrain of his hits but it actually made sense when he sings it, made me think that this once depressed teenager had it all figured out.

A big fan of James Dean he wrote the book, James Dean Is Not Dead when he was 21 and the video clip for this Morrissey single features the singer walking in the streets of Fairmount, Indiana, the boyhood city of James Dean. In the video are also featured the school where James Dean studied and the Park Cemetery where the actor is currently buried.

As per Johnny Marr, former The Smiths member and Morrissey song writing partner “So much has been made of that first meeting with Morrissey, but I suppose that looking back at it, it must have been the attraction of opposites. Like, he is a very tidy person and very organised and that was a bit of a shock to me, plus I had never seen so many books in the one room. I had certainly never met anyone like him and it still intrigues me why he was interested in JM (James Dean).” (Melody Maker, 1985)

Suedeheads were a subculture that grew out from the original 1960s skinhead movement. The lyrics of the Morrissey song are unrelated to that topic. Although sharing many similarities to 1960s skinheads, suedeheads grew their hair longer and dressed in a more formal manner. Although working class, like the skinheads who preceded them, some suedeheads worked in white collar jobs. The female equivalent of a suedehead was a sort.

“Age shouldn’t affect you. It’s just like the size of your shoes – they don’t determine how you live your life! You’re either marvellous or you’re boring, regardless of your age.” – Morrissey

I want to talk about Morrissey. I get sudden bursts on inspiration to listen to Morrissey, and then

I want to talk about Morrissey. I get sudden bursts on inspiration to listen to Morrissey, and then find it takes me atleast a fortnight to move on to anything else. When his new album was released earlier this year, it took me two months to listen to anything else. I’m not even a die-hard Moz fan, though I think I may becoming one. I came to him late, admittedly, I even came to The Smiths late. Largely because I wasn’t around when they were, but most Smiths fans atleast discover them in the throws of puberty, not so much with me. Unfortunately, in my early teens I relied on either escapism or the completely unsubtle, certainly avoiding all things poetic. Moz didn’t really come into the equation untill I was about 16. Since then every few months I’ve had some kind of urge to blast him out and hide away in my room, or go for long walks in the dark with my headphones in. It’s a pathetic kind of self indulgence, but atleast that way I’m not inflicting the strange moods that usually accompany these occassions on anyone else. But everytime I listen to him, particularly if I watch him as well, the strength of feeling is as much as it was the first time I saw William, It Was Really Nothing on Top Of The Pops 2.

Yet I still don’t know why. I’m still not quite sure what it is that makes Morrissey so special. There’s definitely something, I just can’t put my finger on it. I get goosebumps whenever I see footage of grown men reaching out to hold his hand, or charging the stage for a fleeting hug. I can think of nothing else that can reduce even the apparently hardest of men to gibbering wrecks of emotion. It’s sort of beautiful.

I have a few semi theories about what it is that’s so appealling about Mozza, none of which are complete or all inclusive, admittedly. Firstly, Morrissey is often heard to say that he never “performs”, often to much scorn from whoever provoked the comment in the first place. But I really do think that’s true. Watching him, it’s not really a performance, I don’t think he’d ever let himself ‘perform’ as such. It just isn’t in his nature.

Connecting to that, I think he’s painfully honest, which I like. He has a sense of humour found in a lot of northeners, particularly Mancunian men. It’s dry and slightly cruel, and a lot of people don’t get it straight away, but that means that when you do, it’s that bit more appealling.

One of the most obvious reasons that he’s so endearing, is that his music has always been incredibly emotional and atleast apparently personal. To hear that from his quirky, nerdy looking self in his Smiths days, or from his relatively typical (if considerably more handsome than most) older self now, are both so different to the type of musician you’d normally hear such heartfelt howls from. As well as that, he’s pretty outspoken, and will undoubtedly make his feelings known to you. Whether you agree with his beliefs or not, the fact that he holds them so strongly and will fight for them, that’s so rare from anyone in the public eye these days that it’s hard not to feel warmed.

When I heard that Morrissey had collapsed on stage in Swindon on Saturday night I was terrified. I was immediately thinking that I hadn’t had enough time with him, despite the fact that his music will live on long after him, and also that I’ve still not had the chance to see him live, one of my goals for the next few years. Thankfully, he seems to be on the road to recovery. The world is not ready to live without him just yet, it seems.

To spore wyróżnienie ze strony Mozza. Okazuje się, że pamiętne słowa Warsaw, Warsaw you are really something, wypowiedziane przez Morriseya podczas lipcowego koncertu, nie okazały się obietnicą bez pokrycia.
The devoted legion of fans of his solo work and his former band, The Smiths, will wish many happy returns to a man famed for his sardonic lyrics.

Born in Davyhulme and raised in Hulme and Stretford, Steven Patrick Morrissey has always remained close to his roots despite having found worldwide stardom.

He formed The Smiths with guitarist Johnny Marr in 1982 and garnered massive critical acclaim with songs such as This Charming Man, William It Was Really Nothing and How Soon Is Now?

Their 1985 album, The Queen Is Dead, also spawned one of the most famous record covers – the inside sleeve featuring the band in pose outside Salford Lads Club.

Other Greater Manchester references in their musical output were the song Suffer Little Children, written in memory of the Moors murders on Saddleworth Moor, and their final album, Strangeways, Here We Come, named after what is now officially known as HMP Manchester.

The Smiths split in the summer of 1987 much to the anguish of their dedicated fanbase but Morrissey’s solo career quickly blossomed just six months later with the release of the album Viva Hate.

Eight albums followed including this year’s release Years Of Refusal.

His private life, although notoriously closely guarded, has provided plenty of newsprint with his outspoken views on many subjects including the Royal Family and politicians.
